COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THREE METHODS OF TONSILLECTOMY IN DOGS Full text
2007
MJ Eesa
Eleven dogs were used in this study. The animals were divided into three groups: group one, in which the tonsil glands were ligated and then resected by scalpel; group two, the tonsils resected by electrocautery; group three; the tonsils were excised by electrocautery with help of an laparoscope. The clinical findings, after two days of operation, at the excision sites appeared redness in color and slight swelling. These signs disappeared at 4-6 postoperative days in group one, while in second and third groups, it extend for 5 - 7 days. Healing of surgical sites occurred 10-12 days after operation in the first group, while in second and third groups, healing occurred in 11-14 days, respectively. The modified use of a rigid laparoscopic toll in the third group for tonsillectomy, was found to be easy for application of the method and given good results.

The aim of this study was to determine the interaction between the Newcastle disease and Infectious bursal disease vaccines commonly used in the field to control these two important viral diseases. Haemagglutination inhibition (HI) test was employed to measure the antibody titers in chicks sera to ND.IBD vaccine was showed to have adverse effect on the ND vaccine were as the reverse was not true. The results obtained also revealed that better antibody response against ND vaccine was detected when ND vaccine was administered before IBD vaccine. The deleterious effect of IBD vaccine on antibody levels against ND vaccine was low when IBD vaccine was administered at 14 days of age as compared to 7 days of chicken age. No great variation in the antibody titers when chicks were administered ND vaccine containing LaSota or Hitchner B1strain of the virus were observed, although slight better antibody responses were noted for LaSota over HitchnerB1 strain. Vaccination of chicks with ND vaccine of LaSota strain at 7 days followed by vaccination with IBD vaccine at 14 days yielded better antibody titers than Hitchner B1.

The research include the study of the effect of lead in the form of lead nitrate on some hematological parameters (Hb concentration, total WBC count , differential WBC count) and liver enzymes, glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT) or (ALT) and glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) or (AST) levels during the acute and chronic exposure in experimental mice , the research performed by feeding the mice to two different concentration of lead nitrate 50 ppm/kg and 100 ppm/kg for two exposure periods the acute (10days) and chronic (20 days) . the results showed that the lead in 50 ppm/kg con. in chronic period showed much less decrease in hemoglobin concentration, neutrophils percentage ( 6.9 g/100ml , 12.25% respectively) than in the acute period (9 g/100ml , 18.5% respectively) and an increase in total WBCs count, basophils, eosinophils and lymphocytes percentage (5.01×103,2.25% , 4% and 65.25% respectively) much than in the acute period( 3.11×103 , 0.75% , 0.75% , 63.25% respectively) , AST level increase significantly in the acute period of 100 ppm/kg exposure where as ALT level increase significantly in the acute period of 50 ppm/kg exposure , we also found that females were more hematologically affected with lead compared with males while the AST and ALT levels were high in males than females for both periods .

The importance of milk for the growth and health of a newborn offspring is well known. Milk contains immunoglobulin G (Ig G), Ig A, lactoperoxidase, lactoferin, cytokines, and growth factors. Osteopontin, one of the multifunctional proteins, is secreted by macrophages, T cell, and epithelial cells. Although osteopontin production in bovine milk have been documented, the precise expression levels in bovine milk have not been clarified. The aim of this study was to observe the expression of osteopontin, in bovine milk during the lactation period or bovine mammary glands.

Streptococcus spp. comprising Streptococcus (S.) uberis and S. dysgalactiae strains is major cause of bovine mastitis from particularly well-managed or low somatic cell count herds that have successfully controlled contagious pathogens. In this study, antimicrobial susceptibility and genetic characteristics of S. uberis isolated from clinical or subclinical mastitis milk at 2003 were investigated. Eighty seven isolates of Streptococcus spp. were identified by the conventional biochemical methods. The antimicrobial susceptibility by disk diffusion method was determined for 46 S. uberis, 11 S. bovis, 10 S. oralis, 6 S. uberis and 14 other Streptococcus spp., Overall, the tested strains were susceptible to tetracycline (11.5%), amikacin (14.9%), streptomycin (16.1%), neomycin (26.4%), kanamycin (35.6%), gentamicin (65.2%), oxacillin (70.1%), ampicillin (75.9%), chloramphenicol (78.2%), and cephalothin (97.7%).

A case of multicentric high grade T cell lymphoma is reported in a 5-year-old male Maltese dog with generalized lymphadenopathy. The dog showed depression, anorexia, blindness, jaundice, arrhythmia, and hematuria for 8 months. Complete blood count and chemistry profile revealed anemia and increased alanine transferase, alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin, and total cholesterol. Grossly, most of lymph nodes, spleen, and liver were enlarged and neoplastic masses were occupied in these tissues. Histologically, massive accumulation of small noncleaved neoplastic lymphocytes with high mitotic figures was observed in all lymph nodes and spleen.

The aim of this study was to compare the reaction of the cardiovascular system, and the anesthetic effect among 3 experimental groups, epidural administration of medetomidine as a single agent, the combination of buprenorphine and medetomidine, and the combination of fentanyl and medetomidine. Twenty one dogs were anesthetized with isoflurane and allowed to breathe spontaneously. Epidural, arterial, and venous catheters were inserted. The tip of epidural catheter was positioned at the level of the space between the sixth and seventh lumbar vertebra.

A 3-month-old male Maltese dog was presented with generalized trembling, ataxia, and seizure. The patient had traumatic injury on history takings. Physical examination revealed dome shaped cranium with open fontanelle, nasal hemorrhage, and blepharoedema with hemorrhage on the left side. On serum biochemical profiles, creatine phosphokinase was severely elevated. There was no remarkable finding on radiography. Ultrasound images of brain were obtained via a persistence bregmatic fontanelle, and bilaterally dilated lateral ventricles with a hyperechoic mass on the left temporal lobe were detected.

In 3 dogs with gallbladder mucocele, rupture of gallbladder was diagnosed and treated. Although the diagnosis of gallbladder is challenging due to non-specific clinical signs and physical examination findings, mucoceles are ultrasonographically characterized by the appearance of the stellate of finely striated bile patterns and differ from biliary sludge by the absence of gravity dependent bile movement. In this case, gallbladder rupture caused by mucocele can be diagnosed based on not only above characteristics but secondary lesion such as ascites around gallbladder and swollen hyperechoic mesentery.
