To establish a statistically reliable sampling strategy for serological surveillance of classical swine fever (CSF) in Korea, antibody test data from CSF surveillance conducted during year 2005 were analyzed. The most appropriate sampling method was determined to be stratified multi-stage random sampling strategy, in which the primary sampling unit is a pig farm and the secondary are the pigs by the strata of breeders and finishers in the selected farm. The optimum sample size was 5 to 19 including 1 to 2 breeders according to the number of pigs in the farm.

Pasteurella multocida D:4 producing Pasteurella multocida toxin (PMT) is a causal pathogen in atrophic rhinitis in pigs. To investigate the protective immunity and vaccination effect of recombinant PMT, the gene for PMT was isolated from the infective P. multocida D:4. The 2.3 kb XhoI/PstI fragment (PMT2.3) of PMT gene was expressed in E. coli BL21 (DE3) using the induced expression vector system. The recombinant protein of PMT2.3 having molecular weight of 84 kDa was purified by Ni-affinity column chromatography.

Environmental mastitis has increased particularly in well-managed or low somatic cell count herds that have successfully controlled contagious pathogens. Major pathogens of environmental mastitis are Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Streptococcus uberis. The present study was conducted to investigate the isolation and antibiotic susceptibility of 406 (21.8%) gram-negative bacteria isolated mastitis milk from 1,865 quaters of 241 Korean dairy farms from 2001 to 2004. Prevalence of major gram-negative bacteria isolated from mastitis milk were E. coli (22.7%) and Enterobacter spp. (16.3%) in coliforms and Pseudomoas spp. (10.3%) and Serratia spp. (7.9%) in non-coliforms.

Cutaneous asthenia or dematosparaxis is an uncommon, congenital and inherited connective tissue disease of dog and cat, resembling Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) in man. EDS is characterized by loose, hyperextensible and, fragile skin, it is attributed to mutations in connective tissue gene. These mutations cause defects in type Ⅰ or Ⅲ collagen synthesis and as a result lack of strength or elasticity to skin, joint, ligament and vessels. EDS-affected animals often experience subcutaneous hematomas that have long bleeding times.

The aim of this study was to compare the reaction of the cardiovascular system, and the anesthetic effect among 3 experimental groups, epidural administration of medetomidine as a single agent, the combination of buprenorphine and medetomidine, and the combination of fentanyl and medetomidine. Twenty one dogs were anesthetized with isoflurane and allowed to breathe spontaneously. Epidural, arterial, and venous catheters were inserted. The tip of epidural catheter was positioned at the level of the space between the sixth and seventh lumbar vertebra.

A 3-month-old male Maltese dog was presented with generalized trembling, ataxia, and seizure. The patient had traumatic injury on history takings. Physical examination revealed dome shaped cranium with open fontanelle, nasal hemorrhage, and blepharoedema with hemorrhage on the left side. On serum biochemical profiles, creatine phosphokinase was severely elevated. There was no remarkable finding on radiography. Ultrasound images of brain were obtained via a persistence bregmatic fontanelle, and bilaterally dilated lateral ventricles with a hyperechoic mass on the left temporal lobe were detected.

In 3 dogs with gallbladder mucocele, rupture of gallbladder was diagnosed and treated. Although the diagnosis of gallbladder is challenging due to non-specific clinical signs and physical examination findings, mucoceles are ultrasonographically characterized by the appearance of the stellate of finely striated bile patterns and differ from biliary sludge by the absence of gravity dependent bile movement. In this case, gallbladder rupture caused by mucocele can be diagnosed based on not only above characteristics but secondary lesion such as ascites around gallbladder and swollen hyperechoic mesentery.

A 3 year-old female Afghan hound came to the Veterinary Referral Hospital of the College of Veterinary Medicine, Seoul National University for artificial insemination (AI) with frozen semen. In order to inseminate, semen was frozen in USA 3 years ago. Frozen semen was sent by air from Santiago to Seoul for AI. The stud died 2 years ago, so we could only use a limited amount of frozen semen in that estrus cycle. The number of total motile spermatozoa was 59.4×10∨6 and the total volume was 1.2 ml. The frozen spermatozoa were thawed in 70℃ water for 8 sec, which were then deposited at the bilateral uterine horns by a surgical method.

We investigated the safety, immunogenicity and protectivity of mix-crude outer membrane protein (cOMP) vaccine against salmonellosis in animals. The mix-cOMP vaccine was extracted from Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (ST) and Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE) and Salmonella enterica serovar Braenderup (SB) isolated from pigs. The mix-cOMP vaccine gave significantly higher antibody response than ST-bacterin and ST-cOMP vaccine in guinea pigs. The survival rates of mix-cOMP vaccinated groups showed significantly higher (100%) than those (0-20%) of unvaccinated control group, challenged with 3 species of Salmonella (ST, SE and SB) in mice.

Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) is very important disease in cattle industry with a worldwide distribution. Detection and elimination of persistently infected calves with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) was valuable strategy for BVD eradication because those calves were main source for transmission. We surveyed persistent infection with BVDV by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) using whole blood and skin. Five hundred thirty nine Korean native calves were tested. Four calves (0.7%) were positive for BVDV antigen for both tests.
