Pollution of surface water by nitrates has reached such an extent that the accepted levels for drinking water are often exceeded. The local decision makers need the means to assist them inimproving of the aeras affected by nitrate pollution so that they can make the appropriate decisions to restore water quality. We have shown that when it is linked to various regional data bases on the environment and standard Geographical Information System software is used to handle them, the Overall Balance method may be considered as an aid to decision-making in order to evaluate diffuse pollution and simulate agro-environmental measures. By using of this method it has already been possible to identify areas where, according to regional regulations, there is excess of slurry. It is used regionally to define watersheds where projects or demonstrations would be threatened.
