Undisturbed outdoor lysimeters containing arable loamy sand soil were used to examine the influence of either heavy rain events (high frequency of high rain intensity), steady rain (continuous rainfall of low rain intensity), and natural rainfall on the transport and retention of surfactant-stabilized silver nanoparticles (AgNP). In addition, the AgNP–soil associations within the Ap horizon were analyzed by means of particle-size fractionation, asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation coupled with UV/Vis-detection and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (AF4-UV/Vis-ICP-MS), and transmission electron microscopy coupled to an energy-dispersive X-ray (TEM-EDX) analyzer. The results showed that AgNP breakthrough for all rain events was less than 0.1% of the total AgNP mass applied, highlighting that nearly all AgNP were retained in the soil. Heavy rain treatment and natural rainfall revealed enhanced AgNP transport within the Ap horizon, which was attributed to the high pore water flow velocities and to the mobilization of AgNP–soil colloid associations. Particle-size fractionation of the soil revealed that AgNP were present in each size fraction and therefore indicated strong associations between AgNP and soil. In particular, water-dispersible colloids (WDC) in the size range of 0.45–0.1 μm were found to exhibit high potential for AgNP attachment. The AF4-UV/Vis-ICP-MS and TEM-EDX analyses of the WDC fraction confirmed that AgNP were persistent in soil and associated to soil colloids (mainly composed of Al, Fe, Si, and organic matter). These results confirm the particularly important role of soil colloids in the retention and remobilization of AgNP in soil. Furthermore, AF4-UV/Vis-ICP-MS results indicated the presence of single, homo-aggregated, and small AgNP probably due to dissolution.

The influence of nitrogen (N) deposition on forest ecosystems largely depend on the N status. Developing threshold and practical indicators for N saturation in subtropical forests, with extremely high N deposition, would both enhance forest management and the assessments of global N balance and carbon (C) sequestration. Here, we quantified the N mass balance and assessed current N status at a number of subtropical forest sites in South China, using both N content, C/N ratio, and 15N natural abundance (δ15N) as potential indicators of N saturation. Among the studied sites, N deposition ranged from 13.8 to 113 kg N ha−1 yr−1 in throughfall, and was dominated by ammonium (NH4+). The threshold for N leaching in subtropical forest was first found to be 26–36 kg N ha−1 yr−1, which was 160% higher than in temperate forest (based on prescribed minimum). This indicates that critical parameter inputs in global models of the impact of N deposition are in need of revision, based on specific ecosystem characteristics. We found a critical C/N ratio of 20 for the O/A horizon as indicator of N saturation. Foliar N content and δ15N were positively correlated with N deposition and were well suited to indicate regional N status. The δ15N enrichment factor (Ɛfoli/So2, δ15Nfoliage - δ15NSoil2) was between −10‰ and −1‰, and had similar trend to those obtained from other regions with increasing N deposition. These suggest that the enrichment factor could be used to investigate the influence of N deposition in forest ecosystems, regardless of spatial heterogeneity in δ15N of N input, soil N availability and geomorphology.

The aim of the study was to determine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content in different forest humus types. The investigation was carried out in Chrzanów Forest District in southern Poland. Twenty research plots with different humus types (mor and mull) were selected. The samples for analysis were taken after litter horizons removing from a depth of 0–10 cm (from the Of- and Oh-horizon total or A-horizon). pH, organic carbon and total nitrogen content, base cations, acidity, and heavy metal content were determined. In the natural moisture state, the activity of dehydrogenase was determined. The study included the determination of PAH content. The conducted research confirms strong contamination of study soil by PAHs and heavy metals. Our experiment provided evidence that different forest humus types accumulate different PAH amounts. The highest content of PAHs and heavy metals was recorded in mor humus type. The content of PAHs in forest humus horizon depends on the content and quality of soil organic matter. Weaker degradation of hydrocarbons is associated with lower biological activity of soils. The mull humus type showed lower content of PAHs and at the same time the highest biological activity confirmed by high dehydrogenase activity.
