Microplastics (MP), the debris that collectively refers to plastic fragments and particles of <5 mm in size within marine environments, has been the subject of interest within the past decade. Evidence of its occurrence and abundance, has been recorded in this communication after examining gastrointestinal specimens of eight commercially available fish species common to the Arabian (Persian) Gulf acquired locally from the State of Kuwait. The species studied belonged to different trophic levels, and the specimens were subjected to Micro Raman and Micro Fourier Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) in Attenuated Reflective Mode (ATR) to determine the presence and type of polymer of the MP. The detected MP set a president for the first time in the examined fish species within the State of Kuwait, which are of immense commercial importance. Various particles were detected, and three MP particles (fragments) were detected within the guts of Acanthopagrus latus, Eleutheronemaa tetradactylum and Lutjanus quinquelineatus. Based on the nature and behaviour of these particular fish types which prefer to stay in muddy waters and sheltered lagoons, it is suspected that common primary sources of MP (i.e. waste fragmentation) have led to passive/active intake (e.g. detritus ingestion) of these particles (fragments) by these species of fish in Kuwait.

Bilateral asymmetry is presumed to reveal the developmental variability of the fish in polluted aquatic environments. In these habitats, high-level asymmetry develops, and these fish expend more energy to balance their growth than fish that are not under an impact. A total of 210 specimens of Acanthopagrus bifasciatus, A. latus and Sparidentex hasta were collected from the marine waters of Iraq in the northwest part of the Arabian Gulf. The asymmetry was calculated for the sagittal otolith characters of length and width. Otolith width has lower asymmetry than otolith length for the three sparid fish species investigated. An increase in the value of fluctuating asymmetry with fish length was observed. This could be a pertinent indicator of pollution in the habitat.

Saccular otolith mass asymmetry is examined in three sparid fish species, Acanthopagrus bifasciatus, A. arabicus, and Sparidentex hasta collected from Khor Abdullah at the North Persian Gulf. This characteristic was computed as the disparity between the weight of the right and left otoliths divided by mean otolith weight in the three sparid species investigated. According to the previous cases obtained on another symmetrical fish species, the absolute value of x in these species does not determine by fish length and otolith growth ratio, while the absolute rate of otolith weight disparity is boosted with the fish length. The estimate of x was between -0.2 and +0.2. Otolith mass asymmetry can show some growth disorder of fish owing to environmental influence.

Black bream (Acanthopagrus butcheri) were collected from an artificial inlet, Claisebrook Cove, Western Australia. Claisebrook Cove is adjacent to an historic contaminated site that was remediated during the 1990s. It was later identified as a priority area due to elevated levels of sediment contaminants including Zn, Cu, and Pb. Black bream were collected from this cove in 2005 and 2012 and their otoliths were analysed by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry of the most recent growth zone. Levels of Zn and Mn, which are metabolically regulated, did not correlate with sediment contamination. However, reduction in sediment Cu levels over time coincided with reduced Cu otolith levels from 2005 to 2012. Results indicate that the elemental composition of the marginal edge of Black bream otoliths can identify bioavailable contaminants in an urban estuary and, with monitoring, can be utilized to establish long-term trends.

The aquatic biota of the Arabian Gulf deals with exposure to chronic oil pollution, several constituents of which cause induction of Cytochrome P450 1A that serves as a biomarker of AhR ligand exposure. In this study, fluorescent aromatic compounds (FACs) in bile and 7-ethoxyresorufin-o-deethylase (EROD) catalytic activity were determined as a measure of exposure biomarkers in two fish species, yellow fin seabream (Acanthopagrus latus) and tonguesole (Cynoglossus arel) captured from Kuwait Bay and outside the Bay area. FACs in fish bile determined by using fixed-wavelength fluorescence (FF) showed high fluorescence ratios between FF290/335 and FF380/430 indicating predominant exposure to low molecular weight, naphthalene-rich petroleum products (375±91.0pgml−1). Exposures to benzo(a)pyrene-type high-molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) originating from burnt fuel were also present in appreciable concentration in the bile. The ratio of petrogenic to pyrogenic hydrocarbon was twofold higher in winter compared to summer months in both species. Seasonal effect on EROD was significant in tonguesole in Auha site (P<0.05); whereas seabream resisted seasonal change. Tonguesole is considered to be a suitable bioindicator of oil pollution in Kuwait Bay area.

Two fish species yellowfin seabream (Acanthopagrus latus) and tonguesole (Cynoglossus arel) were collected from two locations in Kuwait’s territorial waters in non-reproductive periods and used as bio-indicator organism for the assessment of metals in the marine environment. Species variation in fish was observed; seabream contained high metal content and metallothionein in liver and gill tissues compared to tonguesole, especially from Kuwait Bay area. Oxidative injury was registered in the gills of both species, but in tonguesole liver was also involved. Consequently, antioxidant enzyme catalase was elevated in tonguesole enabling bottom dwelling fish to combat oxidative assault. The study provided information about the current status of metals in marine sediment and levels of metals accumulated in representative species along with oxidative damage in exposed tissues and the range of biomarker protein metallothionein and enzymes of antioxidant defence mechanism enhancing our understanding about the biological response to the existing marine environment in Kuwait.

This study investigated the effects of age and length on mercury contamination in four fish species; yellow-eye mullet (Aldrichetta forsteri), black bream (Acanthopagrus butcheri), sand flathead (Platycephalus bassensis) and sea-run brown trout (Salmo trutta) from the Derwent Estuary, Tasmania, Australia, and examined the implications of these findings for public health monitoring. Mean mercury levels exceeded the Food Standards Australia and New Zealand maximum permitted level (0.5 mg kg⁻¹) for all species except yellow-eye mullet. Mean levels in black bream were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than other species and consequently are a particular concern for human health. Regional differences (p < 0.05) in mercury levels in sand flathead were not obviously correlated with metal levels in the sediments. However, age and length significantly (p < 0.05) influenced mercury levels in brown trout and sand flathead, with age being more strongly related to intraspecies differences. In addition, movement and distribution within the estuary and trophic status appeared to be important factors in contribution to interspecific variation. Consequently, a sound understanding of fish life history and biology is important in identifying species which may be susceptible to accumulating mercury and hence pose a potential threat to human health.

Otoliths of black bream (Acanthopagrus butcheri) collected from the Swan River Estuary were analysed by Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to measure concentrations of 14 trace metals. Trace metal concentrations in the otoliths may be related to the environmental exposure history of fish to contamination. The following metal isotopes were investigated: aluminium (²⁷Al), calcium (⁴⁴Ca), manganese (⁵⁵Mn), iron (⁵⁷Fe), copper (⁶⁵Cu), zinc (⁶⁶Zn), strontium (⁸⁸Sr), cadmium (¹¹¹Cd), tin (¹²⁰Sn), barium (¹³⁸Ba), mercury (²⁰²Hg), lead (²⁰⁸Pb) and the metalloids arsenic (⁷⁵As, ⁷⁷As) and selenium (⁸²Se). Significant differences in otolith trace metal composition were found between sampling sites. Lead and ⁵⁷Fe were consistently lower in downstream fish relative to upstream fish, while ⁸⁸Sr varied with the salinity gradient in the urban estuary. Lead and ⁵⁷Fe followed similar patterns within the otoliths, and appeared to provide the best discriminatory power for relating otolith metal concentration to the environmental history of the fish.

The Gippsland Lakes estuary, a Ramsar listed wetland, in Victoria, Australia, is an area of potential concern for metal pollution due to influxes of human population and associated anthropogenic activities. A biomonitoring exercise was undertaken where the concentrations of 9 metals (Cr, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Ag, Cd and Hg) were analysed in the soft tissue of two common sessile invertebrates: the mussel Mytilus edulis and the barnacle Amphibalanus variegatus from 6 locations on two different occasions throughout the Gippsland Lakes estuary. A salinity gradient exists in the Lakes, from seawater at Lakes Entrance in the east, decreasing down to < 10 PSU in the west at Lake Wellington during times of rainfall, which is a major factor governing the growth and distribution of both species. Dissolved metal levels in general were low; however, Cu at most sites exceeded the 90% trigger values, while all Zn concentrations exceeded the lowest 80% trigger values of the ANZECC marine water quality guidelines for environmental health. Elevated levels of Cu and Zn were found particularly in barnacles at some sites with environmental contamination due to leaching from anti fouling paints and sacrificial zinc anodes. Elevated levels of Ag and Cd were found in mussels at the Hollands Landing site, which is immediately adjacent to a boat ramp, and Cd and Ag at this site are suspected to originate from inland anthropogenic sources. Concentrations of As in M. edulis across all 6 sites in both sampling periods had mean wet weight As concentrations exceeding the maximum level stated in the FSANZ guidelines. A. variegatus contained elevated levels of Hg especially at the North Arm site with a maximum of 13.6 μg Hg/g dry wt., while A. variegatus also showed temporal changes in Hg concentrations across sites. The maximum Hg concentration found in Mytilus edulis was 1.49 μg Hg/g dry wt. at the Hollands Landing site. Previous contaminant studies of biota in the Lakes have targeted sampling of singular predatory or migratory species, such as Black Bream (Acanthopagrus butcheri) and the Burrunan dolphin (Tursiops australis). This is the first biomonitoring study conducted on sessile organisms to assess metal contamination in the system.
