This study developed a process of genetically engineered bacteria Rhodococcus erythropolis expressing Nirs and AMO combined with membrane bioreactor (MBR), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane (pRho-NA-MNR) for advanced treatment of landfill leachate. Results demonstrated that pRho-NA-MNR presented higher removal rate of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), ammonia nitrogen (N–NH₄), total nitrogen (TN) and total organic carbon (TOC) than activated sludge (AS-MNR) system. Administration of pRho-NA increased nitrification by converting N–NH₄ to nitrite (N–NO₂) and Nitrate (N–NO₃), and promoting denitrification by converting N–NO₂ to nitrogen (N₂) in the landfill leachate treatment, promoted the pH control, increased sludge activity and effluent yield, shortened phase length adaptation under alternating aerobic-anoxic conditions. pRho-NA increased the nitration and denitrifying rate in the aerobic and anaerobic stage in the system by increasing Cyt cd1 and Cyt c expression in the activated sludge. Nitrogen removal by nitrification and denitrification was positively correlated to the concentration of Nirs and AMO expression. Treatment with pRho-NA promoted pollutant removal efficiency of membrane bioreactor, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membrane processes in landfill leachate. In conclusion, data suggest that pRho-NA-MNR facilitates the formation of granular sludge and enhances comparable removal of nitrogen and organic compounds, indicating the practice of this process should be considered in landfill leachate treatment system.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play important roles in water purification but are also important source of aerosols. However, the relationship between aerosol characteristics and wastewater treatment process remains poorly understood. In this study, aerosols were collected over a 24-month period from a WWTP using a modified anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process. The aerated tank (AerT) was characterized by the highest respiratory fraction (RF) concentrations (861–1525 CFU/m³) and proportions (50.76%–65.96%) of aerosol particles. Fourteen core potential pathogens and 15 toxic metal(loid)s were identified in aerosols. Mycobacterium was the genus that aerosolized most easily in fine grid, pre-anoxic tank, and AerT. High wastewater treatment efficiency may increase the emission of RF and core potential pathogens. The median size of activated sludge, richness of core potential pathogens in wastewater, and total suspended particulates were the most influential factors directly related to the RF proportions, core community of potential pathogens, and composition of toxic metal(loid)s in WWTP aerosols, respectively. Relative humidity, temperature, input and removal of biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, and mixed liquor suspended solids could also directly or indirectly affect the aerosol characteristics. This study enhances the mechanistic understanding of linking aerosol characteristics to treatment processes and has important implications for targeted manipulation.

Microbial communities in activated sludge (AS) have a significant influence on the functions and stability of aeration tanks in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The microbial community structure is affected by various factors, among which operational parameters outcompeted as the key factors in shaping its structure. However, as an important operational parameter of aeration tank, the mechanisms by which sludge retention time (SRT) affect community properties remain unclear. In this study, 144 AS samples from aeration tanks of 48 full-scale WWTPs operating under different SRT conditions were examined via high-throughput Illumina-MiSeq sequencing technology. The results indicated that SRT significantly affected the diversity, composition, assembly, and co-occurrence patterns of the microbial community in aeration tanks. Moreover, our results provided clear evidence that the microbial communities in aeration tanks operating under SRT of 10–20 days have the highest biodiversity, the lowest stochastic processes influence, the more stable molecular ecological network structure, the lowest risks of filamentous sludge bulking and enhanced nitrogen removal potential. The microbial communities could be more stable and resilient to disturbance when aeration tanks were operated under this SRT condition. The findings of this study provided a reference for the optimization of aeration tanks from an of microbial community perspective.

The performance, microbial community and enzymatic activity of sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were investigated under 75-day exposure of different Cu(II) concentrations. Cu(II) at 0–5 mg/L had no distinct impact on the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and nitrogen removal, oxygen-uptake rate (OUR), nitrification and denitrification rate, and microbial enzymatic activity. The inhibitory effects of Cu(II) at 10 and 30 mg/L on the nitrogen removal rate, OUR, and microbial enzymatic activity of SBR increased with an increment in operation time due to the Cu(II) biotoxicity and the accumulation of Cu(II) in activated sludge. The changes of microbial reactive oxygen species production, lactate dehydrogenase release, catalase activity and superoxide dismutase activity demonstrated that Cu(II) at 10 and 30 mg/L broke the equilibrium between the oxidation and antioxidation processes in microbial cells and also damaged the cytomembrance integrity, which could affect the COD and nitrogen removal performance and change normal microbial cell morphology. The Cu(II) in the influent could be removed by the microbial absorption and accumulated in the activated sludge under long-term exposure. The microbial community displayed some distinct changes from 0 to 30 mg/L Cu(II). In contrast with 0 mg/L Cu(II), Nitrosomonas, Nitrospira and some denitrifying bacteria obviously decreased in relative abundance under long-term exposure of 10 and 30 mg/L Cu(II).

Microplastics and nanoplastics in aquatic systems have become a global concern because of their persistence and adverse consequences to ecosystems and potentially human health. Though wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are considered a potential source of microplastics in the environment, the role of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of activated sludge on the fate of nanoplastics is not clear. In this study, the role of EPS in the influence of polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) on the endogenous respiration of activated sludge was investigated for the first time. The results showed that the acute inhibition of activated sludge by PS-NPs was enhanced with increasing PS-NPs concentration. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results indicate that the functional groups involved in the interactions between PS-NPs and EPS were carbonyl and amide groups and the side chains of lipids or amino acids. Furthermore, the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy results show that the protein secondary structures in EPS were changed by PS-NPs and lead to the bioflocculation of activated sludge, which provides a better understanding on the fate of nanoplastics in WWTPs.

Atmospheric ammonia (NH3), a common alkaline gas found in air, plays a significant role in atmospheric chemistry, such as in the formation of secondary particles. However, large uncertainties remain in the estimation of ammonia emissions from nonagricultural sources, such as wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In this study, the ammonia emission factors from a large WWTP utilizing three typical biological treatment techniques to process wastewater in South China were calculated using the US EPA's WATER9 model with three years of raw sewage measurements and information about the facility. The individual emission factors calculated were 0.15 ± 0.03, 0.24 ± 0.05, 0.29 ± 0.06, and 0.25 ± 0.05 g NH3 m−3 sewage for the adsorption-biodegradation activated sludge treatment process, the UNITANK process (an upgrade of the sequencing batch reactor activated sludge treatment process), and two slightly different anaerobic-anoxic-oxic treatment processes, respectively. The overall emission factor of the WWTP was 0.24 ± 0.06 g NH3m−3 sewage. The pH of the wastewater influent is likely an important factor affecting ammonia emissions, because higher emission factors existed at higher pH values. Based on the ammonia emission factor generated in this study, sewage treatment accounted for approximately 4% of the ammonia emissions for the urban area of South China's Pearl River Delta (PRD) in 2006, which is much less than the value of 34% estimated in previous studies. To reduce the large uncertainty in the estimation of ammonia emissions in China, more field measurements are required.

Due to concerns regarding the release of pharmaceuticals into the environment and the understudied impact of stereochemistry of pharmaceuticals on their fate and biological potency, we focussed in this paper on stereoselective transformation pathways of selected chiral pharmaceuticals (16 pairs) at both microcosm (receiving waters and activated sludge wastewater treatment simulating microcosms) and macrocosm (wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) utilising activated sludge technology and receiving waters) scales in order to test the hypothesis that biodegradation of chiral drugs is stereoselective. Our monitoring programme of a full scale activated sludge WWTP and receiving environment revealed that several chiral drugs, those being marketed mostly as racemates, are present in wastewater and receiving waters enriched with one enantiomeric form (e.g. fluoxetine, mirtazapine, salbutamol, MDMA). This is most likely due to biological metabolic processes occurring in humans and other organisms. Both activated sludge and receiving waters simulating microcosms confirmed our hypothesis that chiral drugs are subject to stereoselective microbial degradation. It led, in this research, to preferential degradation of S-(+)-enantiomers of amphetamines, R-(+)-enantiomers of beta-blockers and S-(+)-enantiomers of antidepressants. In the case of three parent compound – metabolite pairs (venlafaxine – desmethylvenlafaxine, citalopram – desmethylcitalopram and MDMA - MDA), while parent compounds showed higher resistance to both microbial metabolism and photodegradation, their desmethyl metabolites showed much higher degradation rate both in terms of stereoselective metabolic and non-stereoselective photochemical processes. It is also worth noting that metabolites tend to be, as expected, enriched with enantiomers of opposite configuration to their parent compounds, which might have significant toxicological consequences when evaluating the metabolic residues of chiral pollutants.

The potential of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to act as sources of poly and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), volatile methyl siloxanes (VMSs) and organic UV-filters to the atmosphere was investigated. Target compounds included: PFASs (fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs), perfluorooctane sulfonamides/sulfonamidoethanols (FOSAs/FOSEs), perfluroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs) and perfluroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs)), cyclic VMSs (D3 to D6), linear VMSs (L3 to L5) and eight UV-filters. Emissions to air were assessed at eight WWTPs using paired sorbent-impregnated polyurethane foam passive air samplers, deployed during summer 2013 and winter 2014. Samplers were deployed on-site above the active tank and off-site as a reference. Several types of WWTPs were investigated: secondary activated sludge in urban areas (UR-AS), secondary extended aeration in towns (TW-EA) and facultative lagoons in rural areas (RU-LG). The concentrations of target compounds in air were ∼1.7–35 times higher on-site compared to the corresponding off-site location. Highest concentrations in air were observed at UR-AS sites while the lowest were at RU-LG. Higher air concentrations (∼2–9 times) were observed on-site during summer compared to winter, possibly reflecting enhanced volatilization due to higher wastewater temperatures or differences in influent wastewater concentrations. A significant positive correlation was obtained between concentrations in air and WWTP characteristics (influent flow rate and population in the catchment of the WWTP); whereas a weak negative correlation was obtained with hydraulic retention time. Emissions to air were estimated using a simplified dispersion model. Highest emissions to air were seen at the UR-AS locations. Emissions to air (g/year/tank) were highest for VMSs (5000–112,000) followed by UV-filters (16–2000) then ΣPFASs (10–110).

Microbial transformation of polyfluoroalkyl phosphate esters (PAPs) into perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) has recently been confirmed to occur in activated sludge and soil. However, there lacks quantitative information about the half-lives of the PAPs and their significance as the precursors to PFCAs. In the present study, the biotransformation of 6:2 and 8:2 diPAP in aerobic soil was investigated in semi-dynamics reactors using improved sample preparation methods. To develop an efficient extraction method for PAPs, six different extraction solvents were compared, and the phenomenon of solvent-enhanced hydrolysis was investigated. It was found that adding acetic acid could enhance the recoveries of the diPAPs and inhibit undesirable hydrolysis during solvent extraction of soil. However 6:2 and 8:2 monoPAPs, which are the first breakdown products from diPAPs, were found to be unstable in the six solvents tested and quickly hydrolyzed to form fluorotelomer alcohols. Therefore reliable measurement of the monoPAPs from a live soil was not achievable. The apparent DT50 values of 6:2 diPAP and 8:2 diPAP biotransformation were estimated to be 12 and > 1000 days, respectively, using a double first-order in parallel model. At the end of incubation of day 112, the major degradation products of 6:2 diPAP were 5:3 fluorotelomer carboxylic acid (5:3 acid, 9.3% by mole), perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA, 6.4%) and perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA, 6.0%). The primary product of 8:2 diPAP was perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA, 2.1%). The approximately linear relationship between the half-lives of eleven polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs, including 6:2 and 8:2 diPAPs) that biotransform in aerobic soils and their molecular weights suggested that the molecular weight is a good indicator of the general stability of low-molecular-weight PFAS-based compounds in aerobic soils.

Great efforts have been made in China to retrofit and upgrade the existing municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) for enhanced removal of organic substrates and in particular nutrients. However, the removal of trace recalcitrant or hazardous organic chemicals, e.g. steroid estrogens, one group of typical endocrine disrupting chemicals, has long been overlooked. The extensive investigations on estrogen removal rates in global and Chinese WWTPs and the estrogen biodegradation kinetics results in batch laboratory experiments are reviewed in this study. The effects of estrogen initial concentration and nitrifying activated sludge are highlighted. Challenges existing in current estrogen studies are pointed out, which are relevant for researches on fate and behavior of similar down-the-drain chemicals in both Chinese and global WWTPs.
