Industrial dye effluents, which are a major wastage component that enter the natural environment, pose a significant health risk to human and aquatic life. Therefore, the effective removal of dye effluents is a major concern. Against this backdrop, in this study, a low-cost, earth-abundant, and ecofriendly ɤ-Fe₂O₃–PPy nanocomposite was prepared employing the conventional hydrothermal method. The morphology, functional groups, and elemental composition of ɤ-Fe₂O₃–PPy were characterized by XRD, SEM, XPS, and FTIR studies. Under optimized conditions, the prepared novel ɤ-Fe₂O₃–PPy nanocomposite showed a high methylene blue (MB) adsorption capacity of 464 mg/g, which is significantly higher than that of existing adsorbents such as CNTs and polymer-modified CNTs. The adsorption parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage, and ionic strength were optimized to enhance the MB adsorption capacity. The adsorption results revealed that MB is adsorbed onto the adsorbent surface via electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and chemical binding interactions. In terms of practical application, the adsorbent’s adsorption–desorption ability in conjunction with magnetic separation was investigated; the prepared ɤ-Fe₂O₃–PPy nanocomposite exhibited excellent adsorption and desorption efficiencies over more than seven adsorption–desorption cycles.

Excess fluoride concentration in drinking water is a global issue, as this has an adverse effect on human health. Several adsorbents have been synthesized from natural raw material to remove fluoride from water. Reported adsorbents have some problems with the leaching of metal ions, fewer adsorption sites, and low adsorption capacity. Therefore, to address this, an effective biomaterial derived from the Luffa cylindrica (LC), containing many active sites, was integrated with a nano form of cerium oxide to form a robust, biocompatible, highly porous, and reusable LC–Ce adsorbent. This synthesized biosorbent offers better interaction between the active sites of LC–Ce and fluoride, resulting in higher adsorption capacity. Several factors, influence the adsorption process, were studied by a central composite design (CCD) model of statistical analysis. Langmuir’s and Freundlich’s models well describe the adsorption and kinetics governed by the pseudo–second–order model. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity was found to be 212 and 52.63 mg/g for LC–Ce and LC, respectively determined by the Langmuir model. Detailed XPS and FTIR analyses revealed the underlying mechanism of fluoride adsorption via ion-exchange, electrostatic interaction, H–bonding, and ion-pair formation. All the results indicate that LC–Ce could serve as a suitable adsorbent for efficient fluoride removal (80–85%).

Porous carbon, which can be functionalized, is considered as a potential carbon material. Herein, two-dimensional (2D) nitrogen-doped magnetic Fe₃C/C (NMC) was prepared by a simple carbonization method using potassium humate (HA-K) as raw material. Remarkably, two templates, g-C₃N₄ and KCl, were formed in situ during the carbonization process, which provide the necessary conditions for the formation of 2D NMC. The NMC was comprehensively studied by different characterization methods. The results show that NMC has a large surface area and mesoporous structure. The prepared NMC-0.50 was used to test the removal performance of Cr(VI). The effects of pH value, coexisting ions and time on Cr(VI) removal performance were investigated, and the adsorption kinetics, isotherm and thermodynamics were studied. The results showed that the adsorption isotherm model of NMC-50 accorded with the Langmuir model, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 423.73 mg g⁻¹. The reaction mechanism of Cr(VI) is adsorption and redox reaction. In addition, NMC-0.50 exhibit high selectivity, separability and regeneration performance. A convenient means for the synthesis of NMC was designed in this work, and demonstrate that NMC has practical value as an adsorbent.

The increased occurrence of Mercury (Hg II) contaminant has caused environmental and health concerns worldwide. Removal of Hg(II) from water is of significant interest, in particular if these can be coupled in a manner of detection. Here, a novel activated carbon (AC) adsorbent and a fast detection device to form a closed-cycle strategy was developed. The synthesis of conjugates of streptavidin-biotinylated DNA probes modified gold nanoparticle was used with lateral flow biosensors for Hg(II) detection. A quantification was completed via a self-developed smartphone app and its limit of detection was 2.53 nM. Moreover, AC was activated with a new activating agent of diammonium hydrogen phosphate. The adsorbent was characterized and determined to have an amorphous microporous structure with a high surface area (1076.5 m² g⁻¹) and demonstrated excellent removal efficiency (99.99%) and adsorption capacity (∼100 mg g⁻¹) for Hg(II). The kinetics of the pseudo-second-order model and the mechanisms of electrostatic adsorption, ion exchange, and complex reactions are provided. The proposed closed-cycle strategy can be useful for early, fast, and mobile detection of Hg (II) pollution, followed by its effective removal during water treatment.

The co-precipitation method was used to synthesize nano-magnetic adsorbent MnFe₂O₄ (nMFO), characterized through XRD, SEM, EDS, and BET techniques. The synthesized nMFO was used for hexavalent and trivalent chromium ions elimination from the aqueous phase. The optimum pH for the adsorption of Cr (VI) and Cr (III) was determined as 2 and 5, respectively. The chromium ions adsorption behavior was well interpreted through the pseudo-second order kinetics model. Furthermore, isotherm studies were conducted, and the obtained results indicated that Langmuir isotherm model could well justify the chromium ions adsorption process. Quick removal (less than 10 min) of both chromium ions and high removal efficiency were occurred using nMFO. The utmost adsorption capacity of trivalent and hexavalent chromium ions were determined as 39.6 and 34.84 mg g⁻¹, respectively. Thermodynamic studies on chromium adsorption revealed positive value for ΔH and negative value for ΔG, representing that chromium ions adsorption was an endothermic and spontaneous process. The multilinearity in the graphs of chromium ions adsorption was observed using intra-particle diffusion model. In this regard, the external mass transfer of chromium ions on synthesized nanoparticles was the important and controlling step in the adsorption process.

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene isomers (BTEX) are known to affect environmental air and health quality. In this study, the levels of BTEX compounds were determined in indoor air environments during the winter generated by several different heaters: diesel pot-bellied heater with chimney (DH); electric heater (EH); unfluted gas heater (GH); kerosene heater (KH); and wood pot-bellied heater with chimney (WH). The samples were collected using a diffusion passive adsorbent (activated charcoal) and then analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results showed that the heaters differ in the quantity of BTEX released during operation. The KH was the most polluted heater based on BTEX measurement, followed by DH. The ∑BTEX for heaters were observed as follows: KH (290 μg m⁻³); DH (120 μg m⁻³); GH (84 μg m⁻³); WH (31 μg m⁻³); EH (16 μg m⁻³). Toluene was the predominant compound in all air samples. In KH and DH, the toluene to benzene ratios (T/B) were higher than 4 due to fuel evaporation, while GH had a T/B ratio of 3.9, indicating that the combustion of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) was the main source. Moreover, a risk assessment was performed to evaluate where the cancer risks (CR) for benzene and ethylbenzene exceeded the critical values (10⁻⁶). KH was found to be the most harmful heater for residents, followed by DH and GH. For non-carcinogenic compounds, hazard quotients (HQ) were found to be less than one and thus unlikely to cause health problems.

Marine oil spill often causes contamination of drinking water sources in coastal areas. As the use of oil dispersants has become one of the main practices in remediation of oil spill, the effect of oil dispersants on the treatment effectiveness remains unexplored. Specifically, little is known on the removal of dispersed oil from contaminated water using conventional adsorbents. This study investigated sorption behavior of three prototype activated charcoals (ACs) of different particle sizes (4–12, 12–20 and 100 mesh) for removal of dispersed oil hydrocarbons, and effects of two model oil dispersants (Corexit EC9500A and Corexit EC9527A). The oil content was measured as n-alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs). Characterization results showed that the smallest AC (PAC100) offered the highest BET surface area of 889 m2/g and pore volume of 0.95 cm3/g (pHPZC = 6.1). Sorption kinetic data revealed that all three ACs can efficiently adsorb Corexit EC9500A and oil dispersed by the two dispersants (DWAO-I and DWAO-II), and the adsorption capacity followed the trend: PAC100 > GAC12 × 20 > GAC4 × 12. Sorption isotherms confirmed PAC100 showed the highest adsorption capacity for dispersed oil in DWAO-I with a Freundlich KF value of 10.90 mg/g∙(L/mg)1/n (n = 1.38). Furthermore, the presence of Corexit EC9500A showed two contrasting effects on the oil sorption, i.e., adsolubilization and solubilization depending on the dispersant concentration. Increasing solution pH from 6.0 to 9.0 and salinity from 2 to 8 wt% showed only modest effect on the sorption. The results are useful for effective treatment of dispersed oil in contaminated water and for understanding roles of oil dispersants.

The emergence of organophosphorus flame retardants and the efficient removal from aquatic environments have aroused increasing concerns. The Urea functionalized Fe₃O₄@LDH (Urea-Fe₃O₄@LDH) was prepared and used to adsorb triphenyl phosphate (tphp) for the first time. The tphp adsorption capacity was up to 589 mg g⁻¹, and the adsorption rate reached 49.9 mg g⁻¹ min⁻¹. Moreover, the influences of various environmental factors (pH, ionic strength and organic matter) on the tphp adsorption on the Urea-Fe₃O₄@LDH were investigated. The initial pH of the solution significantly affected the tphp adsorption, whereas the ionic strength and HA slightly affected the adsorption. The main adsorption mechanism was attributed to electrostatic interaction and π-π interaction. We believe that urea is one of excellent functional groups for the tphp adsorption removal and the materials with urea groups as the adsorbents exhibit good prospects in the future.

Waste date palm-derived biochar (DPBC) was modified with nano-zerovalent iron (BC-ZVI) and silica (BC-SiO₂) through mechanochemical treatments and evaluated for arsenate (As(V)) removal from water. The feedstock and synthesized adsorbents were characterized through proximate, ultimate, and chemical analyses for structural, surface, and mineralogical compositions. BC-ZVI demonstrated the highest surface area and contents of C, N, and H. A pH range of 2–6 was optimum for BC-ZVI (100% removal), 3–6 for DPBC (89% removal), and 4–6 for BC-SiO₂ (18% removal). Co-occurring PO₄³⁻ and SO₄²⁻ ions showed up to 100% reduction, while NO₃⁻ and Cl⁻ ions resulted in up to 26% reduction in As(V) removal. Fitness of the Langmuir, Freundlich and Redlich-Peterson isotherms to As(V) adsorption data suggested that both mono- and multi-layer adsorption processes occurred. BC-ZVI showed superior performance by demonstrating the highest Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity (26.52 mg g⁻¹), followed by DPBC, BC-SiO₂, and commercial activated carbon (AC) (7.33, 5.22, and 3.28 mg g⁻¹, respectively). Blockage of pores with silica particles in BC-SiO₂ resulted in lower As(V) removal than that of DPBC. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model fitted well with the As(V) adsorption data (R² = 0.99), while the Elovich, intraparticle diffusion, and power function models showed a moderate fitness (R² = 0.53–0.93). The dynamics of As(V) adsorption onto the tested adsorbents exhibited the highest adsorption rates for BC-ZVI. As(V) adsorption onto the tested adsorbents was confirmed through post-adsorption FTIR, SEM-EDS, and XRD analyses. Adsorption of As(V) onto DPBC, BC-SiO₂, and AC followed electrostatic interactions, surface complexation, and intraparticle diffusion, whereas, these mechanisms were further abetted by the higher surface area, nano-sized structure, and redox reactions of BC-ZVI.

Current study deals with the surface modification of acid activated carbon (prepared from Pongamia pinnata shells) with Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and its role as an adsorbent in eliminating anionic azo dyes viz. Congo red (CR) and Direct blue 6 (DB) from single and binary adsorptive systems. Binary adsorptive system involved the synergistic and antagonistic influence of one dye over the adsorption of other dye. Physico-chemical alterations due to surfactant modification and post adsorption were studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM), Zeta Potential, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), surface area analysis and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Process parameters influencing efficient adsorption of CR and DB species viz. initial pH of dye solution, adsorbent dosage, incubation temperature and initial concentration of dye species were optimised. Sorbate-sorbent interaction studies for single adsorptive system revealed sorbate’s monolayer formation over adsorbent’s surface and the involvement of chemisorption, as verified by Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second order model, respectively. Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was 555.56 mg/g for CR and 625.00 mg/g for DB. Meanwhile, for binary adsorptive system, competitive Langmuir model verified both CR and DB had antagonistic/competitive effect over each other’s adsorption. Thermodynamic analysis revealed the adsorptive process as exothermic, spontaneous and thermodynamically favourable with an elevated degree of dis-orderedness. Co-existing cations and anions has nominal effect on the adsorption capacity of dyes. Recyclability studies verified a modest efficiency of 62.52% for CR and 50.47% for DB species after the end of 4th adsorption-desorption cycle; thus affirming its recyclability potential. Phytotoxic assay affirmed the effectivity of the adsorbent in adsorbing dye species from aqueous solutions using Vigna mungo seeds as the model.
