Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is a flammable, corrosive and lethal gas even at low concentrations (ppm levels). Hence, the capture and removal of H₂S from various emitting sources (such as oil and gas processing facilities, natural emissions, sewage treatment plants, landfills and other industrial plants) is necessary to prevent and mitigate its adverse effects on human (causing respiratory failure and asphyxiation), environment (creating highly flammable and explosive environment), and facilities (resulting in corrosion of industrial equipment and pipelines). In this review, the state-of-the-art technologies for H₂S capture and removal are reviewed and discussed. In particular, the recent technologies for H₂S removal such as membrane, adsorption, absorption and membrane contactor are extensively reviewed. To date, adsorption using metal oxide-based sorbents is by far the most established technology in commercial scale for the fine removal of H₂S, while solvent absorption is also industrially matured for bulk removal of CO₂ and H₂S simultaneously. In addition, the strengths, limitations, technological gaps and way forward for each technology are also outlined. Furthermore, the comparison of established carbon capture technologies in simultaneous and selective removal of H₂S–CO₂ is also comprehensively discussed and presented. It was found that the existing carbon capture technologies are not adequate for the selective removal of H₂S from CO₂ due to their similar characteristics, and thus extensive research is still needed in this area.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the adsorption capacity of alkylated modified porous biochar prepared by esterification and etherification (PSAC-2) for low concentrate volatile organic compounds (VOCs, toluene and ethyl acetate) in high humidity environment by experiments and theoretical calculations. Results showed that PSAC-2 has a large specific surface area and weak surface polarity, at 80% relative humidity, its capacities for toluene and ethyl acetate adsorption could be maintained at 92% and 87% of the initial capacities (169.9 mg/g and 96.77 mg/g). The adsorption behaviors of toluene, ethyl acetate, and water vapor were studied by adsorption isotherms, and isosteric heat was obtained. The desorption activation energy was obtained by temperature programmed desorption experiment. The outcomes manifested that the PSAC-2 can achieve strong adsorption performance for weakly polar molecules. Through density functional theory (DFT) simulations, owing to the interaction of hydrogen bonds, oxygen-containing groups became a significant factor influencing the adsorption of VOCs in humid environments. These results could provide an important reference for VOCs control in a high humidity environment.

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were oxidized using a mixture of H₂SO₄ and HNO₃, and the oxidized MWCNTS were decorated with magnetite (Fe₃O₄). Finally, poly-N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-butyl acrylate (P-NIPAM) was added to obtain P-NIPAM/Fe/MWCNT nanocomposites. The nanosorbents were characterized by various techniques, including X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis. The P-NIPAM/Fe/MWCNT nanocomposites exhibited increased surface hydrophobicity. Owing to their higher adsorption capacity, their kerosene removal efficiency was 95%; by contrast, the as-prepared, oxidized, and magnetite-decorated MWCNTs had removal efficiencies of 45%, 55%, and 68%, respectively. The P-NIPAM/Fe/MWCNT nanocomposites exhibited a sorbent capacity of 8.1 g/g for kerosene removal from water. The highest kerosene removal efficiency from water was obtained at a process time of 45 min, sorbent dose of 0.005 g, solution temperature of 40 °C, and pH 3.5. The P-NIPAM/Fe/MWCNTs showed excellent stability after four cycles of kerosene removal from water followed by regeneration. The reason may be the increase in the positive charge of the polymer at pH 3.5 and the increased adsorption affinity of the adsorbent toward the kerosene contaminant. The pseudo second-order model was found to be the most suitable model for studying the kinetics of the adsorption reaction.

Soil fumigation continues to play an important role in soil disinfection, but tools to significantly reduce emissions while providing environmental benefits (e.g., biochar) are lacking. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of biochar products on fumigant 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D) and chloropicrin (CP) emissions, their distribution and persistence in soil, nematode control, and potential toxicity to plants in a field trial. Treatments included three biochar products [two derived from almond shells (ASB) at either 550 or 900 °C pyrolysis temperature and one from coconut shells (CSB) at 550 °C] at 30 and 60 t ha⁻¹, a surface covering with a low permeability film (TIF), and no surface covering (control). A mixture of 1,3-D (∼65%) and CP (∼35%) was injected to ∼60 cm soil depth at a combined rate of 640 kg ha⁻¹. All biochar treatments significantly reduced emissions by 38–100% compared to the control. The ASB (900 °C) at both rates reduced emissions as effectively as the TIF (by 99–100%). Both fumigant emission reduction and residue in surface soil were positively correlated with biochar's adsorption capacity while cucumber germination rate and dry biomass were negatively correlated with residual fumigant concentrations in surface soil. This research demonstrated the potential and benefits of using biochar produced from local orchard feedstocks to control fumigant emissions. Additional research is needed to maximize the benefits of biochar on fumigant emission reductions without impacting plant growth.

The effectiveness and feasibility of the three biochar materials for remediation of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) contaminated soil were explored in this study. Significant reduction of bioaccessibility and migration risks of both heavy metals have been explained mechanistically by incubation, column experiments and numerical simulation. Langmuir equation fitted As and Pb sorption isotherms better in the control and biochar (BC) amended soils, while Freundlich model was more suitable for iron modified biochar (Fe-BC) and sulfur/iron modified biochar (S/Fe-BC) amended soils, indicating that modified biochar promoted chemical adsorption process for As and Pb. For the three biochar materials, S/Fe-BC showed the best effects on reducing the bioavailability of As and Pb, with a decrease of 40.42%–64.21%. The reduction in bioaccessibility by metal portioning into available and non-available fractions was better for illustrating the mechanisms including adsorption, precipitation/coprecipitation and As(III) oxidation behind S/Fe-BC efficacy. Moreover, S/Fe-BC can effectively inhibit the leaching behavior of As and Pb under acid rain, which increased by 99.89% and 90.18%, respectively, compared with the control. The HYDRUS-1D modeling indicated that S/Fe-BC could continuously treat As (100 mg/L) and Pb (1000 mg/L) contaminated water for 16.22 years and 40.86 years, respectively, and ensure the groundwater quality criteria being met. Based on these insights, we believe that our study will provide meaningful information about the potentials of biochar derived materials for soil heavy metals’ remediation.

We investigated the competitive effects of different fractions of wastewater treatment plant effluent organic matter (EfOM) on adsorption of an organic micro pollutant (OMP), propranolol (PRO), in a fixed bed column packed with magnetic tyre char (MTC). The results showed that the presence of EfOM inhibited PRO adsorption in wastewater leading to decreased PRO adsorption capacity from 5.86 to 2.03 mg/g due to competitive effects and pore blockage by smaller EfOM fractions. Characterization of EfOM using size exclusion chromatography (LC-OCD) showed that the principal factor controlling EfOM adsorption was pore size distribution. Low molecular weight neutrals had the highest adsorption onto MTC while humic substances were the least interfering fraction. Effect of important parameters such as contact time, linear velocity and bed height/diameter ratio on MTC performance was studied in large-lab scale columns. Linear velocity and contact time were found to be effective in increasing adsorption capacity of PRO on MTC and delaying breakthrough time. Increase in linear velocity from 0.64 cm/min to 1.29 cm/min increased mass transfer and dispersion, resulting in considerable rise of adsorbed amount (5.86 mg/g to 22.58 mg/g) and increase in breakthrough time (15.8–62.7 h). Efficiency of non-equilibrium Hydrus model considering dispersion and mass transfer mechanism was demonstrated for real wastewater and scale up purposes. Ball milling for degradation of adsorbed PRO and regeneration of MTC resulted in 79% degradation of PRO was achieved after 5 h milling (550 rpm), while the addition of quartz sand increased the efficiency to 92%.

The current study is the first attempt to prepare nanocomposites of Eleocharis dulcis biochar (EDB) with nano zero-valent Copper (nZVCu/EDB) and magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs/EDB) for batch and column scale sequestration of Congo Red dye (CR) from synthetic and natural water. The adsorbents were characterized with advanced analytical techniques. The impact of EDB, MNPs/EDB and nZVCu/EDB dosage (1–4 g/L), pH (4–10), initial concentration of CR (20–500 mg/L), interaction time (180 min) and material type to remove CR from water was examined at ambient temperature. The CR removal followed sequence of nZVCu/EDB > MNPs/EDB > EDB (84.9–98% > 77–95% > 69.5–93%) at dosage 2 g/L when CR concentration was increased from 20 to 500 mg/L. The MNPs/EDB and nZVCu/EDB showed 10.9% and 20.1% higher CR removal than EDB. The adsorption capacity of nZVCu/EDB, MNPs/EDB and EDB was 212, 193 and 174 mg/g, respectively. Freundlich model proved more suitable for sorption experiments while pseudo 2nd order kinetic model well explained the adsorption kinetics. Fixed bed column scale results revealed excellent retention of CR (99%) even at 500 mg/L till 2 h when packed column was filled with 3.0 g nZVCu/EDB, MNPs/EDB and EDB. These results revealed that nanocomposites with biochar can be applied efficiently for the decontamination of CR contaminated water.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂ NPs) easily combine with other pollutants such as heavy metals because of their excellent physiochemical properties. However, how such an interaction may affect the binding behavior of metals onto biofilms remains largely unclear. This study, examined the effects of TiO₂ NPs on Cd²⁺ accumulation and toxicity for natural periphytic biofilms were examined. The adsorption kinetics showed that adding 0.1 and 1 mg/L TiO₂–NPs increased the Cd²⁺ adsorption of biofilms at equilibrium by 23.5% and 35.8%, respectively. However, adding 10 mg/L TiO₂ NPs increased the Cd²⁺ adsorption of biofilms at equilibrium by only 1.9%. The adsorption isotherms indicate that the presence of TiO₂ NPs considerably increased the Cd²⁺ adsorption capacity of the biofilms; however, this effect became less prominent at high TiO₂ NP concentrations. The optimum pH for Cd²⁺ adsorption increased with increasing Cd²⁺ and TiO₂ NP contents. At low concentrations, the coexistence of Cd²⁺ and TiO₂ NPs may facilitate their respective accumulation by stimulating the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances and enhancing the microbial activity of the biofilm. The presence of TiO₂ NPs increases the surface binding energy between Cd²⁺ and functional groups such as carboxyl groups, enhancing the Cd²⁺ accumulation on the biofilm.

Increasing rates of commercialization and industrialization have led to the comprehensive evaluation of toxic effects of microplastics on crop plants. However, research on the impact of functionalized polystyrene nanoplastics on the toxicity of heavy metals remains limited. This study investigated the effects of polystyrene, carboxy-modified polystyrene, and amino-modified polystyrene on lead (Pb) toxicity in dandelion seedlings. The results showed that carboxy -modified polystyrene with a negative charge absorbed more Pb²⁺ than polystyrene and amino-modified polystyrene, and their maximum adsorption amounts were 5.328, 0.247, and 0.153 μg g⁻¹, respectively. The hydroponic experiment demonstrated that single amino-modified polystyrene was more toxic to dandelion seedlings than polystyrene and carboxy-modified polystyrene. The presence of Pb²⁺ was found to increase antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase and catalase) and non-antioxidant enzymes (glutathione and ascorbic acid) activities in response to excessive reactive oxygen species in dandelion leaves and roots treated with polystyrene and carboxy-modified polystyrene, while it did not change much when amino-modified polystyrene was added. Interestingly, compared with single Pb²⁺, the addition of amino-modified polystyrene with positive charges induced an obvious decrease in the above parameters; however, they declined slightly in the treatments with polystyrene and carboxy-modified polystyrene despite a stronger adsorption capacity for Pb²⁺. Similarly, the bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, polyphenols, and polysaccharides in dandelion, showed a scavenging effect on O₂⁻ and H₂O₂, thereby inhibiting the accumulation and reducing medicinal properties. This study found that the effects of microplastics on the uptake, distribution, and toxicity of heavy metals depended on the nanoparticle surface charge.

In recent years, pollution of antibiotics and heavy metal has often been reported in organic wastes. Saprophytic insects have been recorded as biological control agents in organic waste management. During organic waste conversion, the intestinal bacteria of the saprophytic insects play an important role in digestion, physiology, immunity and prevention of pathogen colonization. Black soldier fly (BSF) Hermetia illucens has been widely used as saprophytic insects and showed tolerance to sulfonamides (SAs) and cadmium (Cd). Diversity and changes in gut microbiota of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) were evaluated through 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing, and a decrease in diversity of gut microbiota along with an increase in SAs stress was recorded. Major members identified were Actinomycetaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, and Enterococcaceae. And fourteen multi-resistance Klebsiella pneumoniae strains were isolated. Two strains BSFL7-B-5 (from middle midgut of 7-day BSFL) and BSFL11-C-1 (from posterior midgut of 11-day BSFL) were found to be low-toxic and multi-resistance. The adsorption rate of SAs in 5 mg/kg solutions by these two strains reached 65.2% and 61.6%, respectively. Adsorption rate of Cd in 20 mg/L solutions was 77.2% for BSFL7-B-5. The strain BSFL11-C-1 showed higher than 70% adsorption rates of Cd in 20, 30 and 40 mg/L solutions. This study revealed that the presence of multi-resistance bacterial strains in the gut of BSFL helped the larvae against SAs or Cd stress. After determining how and where they are used, selected BSFL gut bacterial strains might be utilized in managing SAs or Cd contamination at suitable concentrations in the future.
