Soil contamination is perhaps the most hazardous issue all over the world; these emerging pollutants ought to be treated to confirm the safety of our living environment. Fast industrialization and anthropogenic exercises have resulted in different ecological contamination and caused serious dangerous health effects to humans and animals. Agro wastes are exceptionally directed because of their high biodegradability. Effluents from the agro-industry are a possibly high environmental risk that requires suitable, low-cost, and extensive treatment. Soil treatment using a bioremediation method is considered an eco-accommodating and reasonable strategy for removing toxic pollutants from agricultural fields. The present review was led to survey bioremediation treatability of agro soil by microbes, decide functional consequences for microbial performance and assess potential systems to diminish over potentials. The presence of hazardous pollutants in agricultural soil and sources, and toxic health effects on humans has been addressed in this review. The present review emphasizes an outline of bioremediation for the effective removal of toxic contaminants in the agro field. In addition, factors influencing recent advancements in the bioremediation process have been discussed. The review further highlights the roles and mechanisms of micro-organisms in the bioremediation of agricultural fields.

Wastewater has become one of the most important and least expensive water for the agriculture sector, as well as an alternative to the overexploitation of water resources. However, inappropriate treatment before its reuse can result in a negative impact on the environment, such as the presence of pathogens. This poses an increased risk for environmental safety, which can subsequently lead to an increased risk for human health. Among all the emerging wastewater pathogens, bacteria of the genus Helicobacter are some of the most disturbing ones, since they are directly related to gastric illness and hepatobiliary and gastric cancer. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the presence of potentially pathogenic Helicobacter spp. in treated wastewater intended for irrigation. We used a next generation sequencing approach, based on Illumina sequencing in combination with culture and other molecular techniques (qPCR, FISH and DVC-FISH), to analyze 16 wastewater samples, with and without an enrichment step. By culture, one of the direct samples was positive for H. pylori. FISH and DVC-FISH techniques allowed for detecting viable Helicobacter spp., including H. pylori, in seven out of eight samples of wastewater from the tertiary effluents, while qPCR analysis yielded only three positive results. When wastewater microbiome was analyzed, Helicobacter genus was detected in 7 samples. The different molecular techniques used in the present study provided evidence, for the first time, of the presence of species belonging to the genus Helicobacter such as H. pylori, H. hepaticus, H. pullorum and H. suis in wastewater samples, even after disinfection treatment.

Worldwide the use of pesticides has increased, especially in the industry and agriculture sector even though they contain highly toxic substances. The use of pesticides has various negative effects on the aquatic ecosystem and organisms within these ecosystems. The paper aimed to assess the effects of increased concentrations of malaria vector control insecticides (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and Deltamethrin (DTM)) on the freshwater diatom community structure using a microcosm approach as well as determine whether a mixture (DDT 1:1 Deltamethrin) exposure will have a greater influence on the diatom community when compared to single exposures of these insecticides. Diatoms were exposed to a high and low concentration (based on LC50 data for freshwater Xenopus laevis from the USEPA Ecotox database) of DDT, DTM and a mixture in lentic microcosms over a total period of 28 days. Results indicated that irrespective of exposure concentrations, DDT, DTM and a mixture had negative effects on the diatom community including functionality and vitality as these insecticides induced changes to their chloroplasts. There was an increased percentage dead cells for all exposures compared to the control, with the insecticides having a phototoxic effect on the diatom community. Exposure to the selected insecticides caused a significant decrease in some diatom metrics indicating the negative effects these insecticides have on the diatom metrics. Therefore, diatoms may prove to be useful as bio-indicators in ecotoxicology studies when assessing the effects of any insecticide exposures.

The social and ecological influence of Neonicotinoids (NEOs) usage in agriculture sector is progressively higher. There are seven NEOs insecticides widely used for the insects control. Among the NEOs, thiacloprid (THD) was extensively used for insect control during crop cultivation. This study targets to analyse the contamination levels of NEOs in agricultural soil and identify photo-biodegradation of THD degradation using pure isolates and mixed consortium. The photo degradation (PD), biodegradation (BD) and photo-biodegradation (PBD) of THD were compared. The corn field agricultural soils were polluted by four NEOs, among them THD had greater contamination level (surface soil: 3901.2 ± 0.04 μg/g) and (sub-surface soil: 3988.6 ± 0.05 μg/g). Three soil free enriched bacterial strains following Bacillus atrophaeus (PB-2), Priestia megaterium (PB-3) (formerly known as Bacillus megaterium), and Peribacillus simplex (PB-4) (formerly known as Bacillus simplex) were identified by microbiological and molecular 16s rRNA gene sequencing. The PD, BD and PBD of THD were conducted and degradation rate was detected by instrument UPLC-MS-MS. The PBD process with blue-LEDs showed better THD degradation efficiency than PD and BD, where the specific THD degradation rate was 85 ± 0.2%, 87 ± 0.5%, and 89 ± 0.3%, respectively for PB-2, PB-3 and PB-4. Then, the photo-biodegradation performance is greater at 150, 175, 200 rpm, pH 7.0–9.0, and temperature 30–35 °C. After the PBD system deliver four intermediate metabolites, the THD degradation process maybe through nitro reduction, hydroxylation and oxidative cleavage pathway.

Global increase in demand for food supply has resulted in surplus generation of wastes. What was once considered wastes, has now become a resource. Studies were carried out on the conversion of biowastes into wealth using methods such as extraction, incineration and microbial intervention. Agro-industry biowastes are promising sources of carbon for microbial fermentation to be transformed into value-added products. In the era of circular economy, the goal is to establish an economic system which aims to eliminate waste and ensure continual use of resources in a close-loop cycle. Biowaste collection is technically and economically practicable, hence it serves as a renewable carbon feedstock. Biowastes are commonly biotransformed into value-added materials such as bioethanol, bioplastics, biofuels, biohydrogen, biobutanol and biogas. This review reveals the recent developments on microbial transformation of biowastes into biotechnologically important products. This approach addresses measures taken globally to valorize waste to achieve low carbon economy. The sustainable use of these renewable resources is a positive approach towards waste management and promoting circular economy.

Particulate matter (PM) is an air pollutant which poses a considerable risk to human health. The agricultural sector is responsible of the 15% of the total anthropogenic emissions of PM₁₀ (PM fraction with aerodynamic diameter below 10 μm) and soil preparation activities have been recognized as one of the main drivers of this contribution. The emission factors (EF) proposed by European environmental agency (EEA) for tilling operations are based on very few studies, none of which has been made in Italy. Moreover, few studies have considered the influence of operative parameters on PM₁₀ emissions during tilling. The aim of this work was to assess PM₁₀ emission and dispersion during rotary harrowing and to understand how operative parameters, such as forward speed and implement choice may affect PM release. A further objective was to assess the near field dispersion of PM₁₀ to address exposure risks. Emission factors (EFs) were determined during two different trials (T1 and T2). During T1, the effect of tractor speeds (0.6, 1.1 and 1.7 m s⁻¹) on PM₁₀ emissions was investigated, while in T2 a comparative essay was made to study the influence of levelling bar height on emissions. The average ground level downwind concentrations of PM₁₀ during harrowing operation was estimated through dispersion modelling. The observed PM₁₀ EFs for rotary harrowing were 8.9 ± 2.0 mg m⁻² and 9.5 ± 2.5 mg m⁻² on T1 and T2, respectively. The heavy metal content of soil-generated PM₁₀ was also assessed. In the generated PM, the elemental concentrations were higher than ones in soil. As, Cd and Ni concentration levels, determined in PM₁₀ near to the tractor path, were also high, being several times higher than the annual average regulatory threshold levels in ambient air, as defined by the European regulation.

Agricultural soils are a leading source of atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and are major contributors to global climate change. Carbon dioxide (CO2) makes up 20% of the total GHG emitted from agricultural soil. Therefore, an evaluation of CO2 emissions from agricultural soil is necessary in order to make mitigation strategies for environmental efficiency and economic planning possible. However, quantification of CO2 emissions through experimental methods is constrained due to the large time and labour requirements for analysis. Therefore, a modelling approach is needed to achieve this objective. In this paper, the DeNitrification-DeComposition (DNDC), a process-based model, was modified to predict CO2 emissions for Canada from regional conditions. The modified DNDC model was applied at three experimental sites in the province of Saskatchewan. The results indicate that the simulations of the modified DNDC model are in good agreement with observations. The agricultural management of fertilization and irrigation were evaluated using scenario analysis. The simulated total annual CO2 flux changed on average by ±13% and ±1% following a ±50% variance of the total amount of N applied by fertilising and the total amount of water through irrigation applications, respectively. Therefore, careful management of irrigation and applications of fertiliser can help to reduce CO2 emissions from the agricultural sector.

Plastic pollution is emerging as a potential threat to the marine environment. In the current study, we selected seagrass meadows, known to efficiently trap organic and inorganic particles, to investigate the concentrations and dynamics of microplastics in their soil. We assessed microplastic contamination and accumulation in ²¹⁰Pb dated soil cores collected in Posidonia oceanica meadows at three locations along the Spanish Mediterranean coast, with two sites located in the Almería region (Agua Amarga and Roquetas) and one at Cabrera Island (Santa Maria). Almería is known for its intense agricultural industry with 30 000 ha of plastic-covered greenhouses, while the Cabrera Island is situated far from urban areas. Microplastics were extracted using enzymatic digestion and density separation. The particles were characterized by visual identification and with Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and related to soil age-depth chronologies. Our findings showed that the microplastic contamination and accumulation was negligible until the mid-1970s, after which plastic particles increased dramatically, with the highest concentrations of microplastic particles (MPP) found in the recent (since 2012) surface soil of Agua Amarga (3819 MPP kg⁻¹), followed by the top-most layers of the soil of the meadows in Roquetas (2173 kg⁻¹) and Santa Maria (68–362 kg⁻¹). The highest accumulation rate was seen in the Roquetas site (8832 MPP m⁻² yr⁻¹). The increase in microplastics in the seagrass soil was associated to land-use change following the intensification of the agricultural industry in the area, with a clear relationship between the development of the greenhouse industry in Almería and the concentration of microplastics in the historical soil record. This study shows a direct linkage between intense anthropogenic activity, an extensive use of plastics and high plastic contamination in coastal marine ecosystems such as seagrass meadows. We highlight the need of proper waste management to protect the coastal environment from continuous pollution.

Microplastics (MPs) as emerging persistent pollutants have been a growing global concern. Although MPs are extensively studied in aquatic systems, their presence and fate in agricultural systems are not fully understood. In the agricultural soils, major causes of MPs pollution include application of biosolids and compost, wastewater irrigation, mulching film, polymer-based fertilizers and pesticides, and atmospheric deposition. The fate and dispersion of MPs in the soil environment are mainly associated with the soil characteristics, cultivation practices, and diversity of soil biota. Although there is emerging pollution of MPs in the soil environment, no standardized detection and quantification techniques are available. This study comprehensively reviews the sources, fate, and dispersion of MPs in the soil environment, discusses the interactions and effects of MPs on soil biota, and highlights the recent advancements in detection and quantification methods of MPs. The prospects for future research include biomagnification potency, cytotoxic effects on human/animals, nonlinear behavior in the soil environment, standardized analytical methods, best management practices, and global policies in the agricultural industry for the sake of sustainable development.

Size-segregated ambient particles down to particles smaller than 0.1 μm (PM₀.₁) were collected during the year 2014–2015 using cascade air samplers with a PM₀.₁ stage, at two cities in Thailand, Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Their characteristics and seasonal behavior were evaluated based on the thermal/optical reflectance (IMPROVE_TOR) method. Diagnostic indices for their emission sources and the black carbon (BC) concentration were assessed using an aethalometer and related to the monthly emission inventory (EI) of particle-bound BC and organic carbon (OC) in order to investigate the contribution of agricultural activities and forest fires as well as agro-industries in Thailand. Monthly provincial EIs were evaluated based on the number of agricultural crops produced corresponding to field residue burning and the use of residues as fuel in agro-industries, and also on the number of hot spots from satellite images corresponding to the areas burned by forest fires. The ratio of char-EC/soot-EC describing the relative influence of biomass combustion to diesel emission was found to be in agreement with the EI of BC from biomass burning in the size range <1 μm. This was especially true for PM₀.₁, which usually tends to be indicative of diesel exhaust particles, and was shown to be very sensitive to the EI of biomass burning. In Chiang Mai, the northern part of Thailand, the forest fires located upwind of the monitoring site were found to be the largest contributor while the carbon behavior at the site in Bangkok was better accounted for by the EI of provinces in central Thailand including Bangkok and its surrounding provinces, where the burning of crop residues and the cultivation of sugarcane for sugar production are significant factors. This suggests that the influence of transportation of polluted air masses is important on a multi-provincial scale (100–200 km) in Thailand.
