Demonstrating trend reversal of groundwater quality in relation to time of recharge determined by 3H/3He

Recent EU legislation is directed to reverse the upward trends in the concentrations of agricultural pollutants in groundwater. However, uncertainty of the groundwater travel time towards the screens of the groundwater quality monitoring networks complicates the demonstration of trend reversal. We investigated whether trend reversal can be demonstrated by relating concentrations of pollutants in groundwater to the time of recharge, instead of the time of sampling. To do so, we used the travel time to monitoring screens in sandy agricultural areas in the Netherlands, determined by 3H/3He groundwater dating. We observed that concentrations of conservative pollutants increased in groundwater recharged before 1985 and decreased after 1990. Thereby, we demonstrated trend reversal of groundwater quality. From this research we concluded that 3H/3He dating can be used to facilitate (re)interpretation of existing groundwater quality data. The presented approach is widely applicable in areas with unconsolidated granular aquifers and large agricultural pressures on groundwater resources. Groundwater age dating reveals trends and trend reversal in groundwater quality.

The beneficial uptake of nutrients by wetland plants is countered to some extent by nutrient release back into the aquatic environment due to vegetative die-back. This current study examined whether Leersia oryzoides, a common wetland plant, exhibits luxury uptake of nutrients from simulated farm runoff. The study also tested whether with subsequent decomposition, these nutrients are released back into the water column. When exposed to elevated (>2 mg/L N and P) runoff, L. oryzoides assimilated significantly higher concentrations of nitrogen (p < 0.001) and phosphorus (p < 0.001) in above-ground biomass as compared to non-enriched treatments (<0.05 mg/L N and P). Subsequently, senescence of enriched above-ground biomass yielded significantly higher concentrations of phosphorus (2.19 ± 0.84 mg P/L). Using L. oryzoides as our model, this study demonstrates nitrogen and phosphorus sequestration during the growing season and release of phosphorus in the winter. Phytoremediation is potentially effective for managing excessive selenium (Se) in drainage sediment residing in the San Luis Drain in central California. This 2-year field study examined the feasibility of amending drainage sediment (containing 4.78 mg Se g 1) with methionine and casein to enhance volatilization without or with vegetation of Sporobolus airoides. Results show that without organic amendments, rates of Se volatilization were less than 25 mgm 2 d 1 in all plots. After amending the sediment with 71.4 mg methionine kg 1 soil, Se volatilization rates were 434 107 mgm 2 d 1 in vegetated plots and 289 117 mgm 2 d 1 in irrigated bare plots.With the amendment of 572 mg casein kg 1 soil, rates increased to 346 103 mgm 2 d 1 in irrigated bare plots and to 114 55 mgm 2 d 1 in vegetated plots. Both methionine and casein promoted biological remediation of Se via volatilization most effectively during the warmest months.

The aim of the present study was the influence of various methods of long-term soil utilisation on the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in selected silty soils. Four soils were selected for the present studies, i.e.: Eutric Fluvisol originating from silty formations, Haplic Phaeozem developed from loess, Haplic Luvisol (non-uniform) developed from silt, Haplic Luvisol developed from loess. Five study sites were chosen, i.e.: apple orchards, hop gardens, fields, grasslands and natural woodland ecosystems. Samples were collected from the depth of 0-10 cm. In the samples the content of 16 PAHs was determined by means of the HPLC-UV method. The total PAHs content was at a low level. Depending on the soil and object type, the total PAHs content ranged from 72.5 to 764.0 μg·kg-¹. The pollutant level determined together with composition of individual PAHs suggested a limited anthropogenic influence relating mainly to pyrolytic processes. The total PAH content as well as the content of individual PAHs depended on agricultural land use and management. It has been shown that PAH level was influenced by environmental conditions specific for a given type of land use. In the soils in which organic carbon content differed only slightly among locations, a higher influence of the soil utilisation method on the content of individual PAHs was observed.

Lowland heath is an internationally important habitat type that has greatly declined in abundance throughout Western Europe. In recent years this has led to a growing interest in the restoration of heathland on agricultural land. This generally requires the use of chemical treatments to return soil chemical conditions to those appropriate for the support of heathland ecosystems. However, the potential for negative impacts on the environment due to the potential of these treatments to increase the availability of trace metals via raised soil acidity requires investigation. A large-scale field study investigated the effect of two chemical treatments used in heathland restoration, elemental sulphur and ferrous sulphate, on soil acidity and whether it is possible to predict the effect of the treatments on availability of two potentially toxic cations (Al and Cd) in the soil along with their subsequent accumulation in the shoots of the grass Agrostis capillaris. Results showed that both treatments decreased soil pH, but that only elemental sulphur produced a pH similar to heathland soil. The availability of Al, measured by extraction with 1 M ammonium nitrate, could not be predicted by soil pH, depth in the soil and total Al concentration in the soil. By contrast, availability of Cd could be predicted from these three variables. Concentrations of both Al and Cd in the shoots of A. capillaris showed no significant relationship with the extractable concentration in the soil. Results are discussed in light of the possible environmental impacts of the chemical restoration techniques.

The sources of copper topsoil variability in agricultural have been evaluated in the northeastern region of the Iberian Peninsula (Spain) using 624 soil samples collected in a standard 8 x 8 km grid. Analyses of variance combined with geostatistical methods have been used to map the spatial variability and to evaluate the relative contribution of natural and anthropic copper sources in topsoils. The use of the residual values derived from the interpolation method have led to the identification of local anomalies in the copper content in relation to agricultural practices carried out on the land. Copper concentrations were relatively low (17.33 ± 14.97 mg/kg) in areas with a high pH level (>8.2) and low organic matter (<1%). In general, the spatial distribution of copper showed a good relationship with the surface evidence of the lithologic units at a regional scale. At a smaller scale, concentration values also indicated the anthropogenic influence related to specific agricultural practices in relation to land use and cultivation methods. The highest mean concentrations were found in vineyards and olive fields. These were partly due to inputs from inorganic fertilisers, mainly copper sulphate, and also to the application of liquid and soil manure.

Nitrogen (N) budget was estimated with dissolved inorganic N (DIN) and dissolved organic N (DON) in a forested mountainous watershed in Tsukui, Kanagawa Prefecture, about 50 km west of Tokyo in Central Japan. The forest vegetation in the watershed was dominant by Konara oak (Quercus serrata) and Korean hornbeam (Carpinus tschonoskii), and Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica). Nitrate (NO₃ -) concentration in the watershed streamwater was averagely high (98.0 ±± 19 (±± SD, n = 36) μmol L-¹) during 2001-2003. There was no seasonal and annual changes in the stream NO- ₃ concentration even though the highest N uptake rate presumably occurred during the spring of plant growing season, a fact indicating that N availability was in excess of biotic demands. The DON deposition rates (DON input rates) in open area and forest area were estimated as one of the main N sources, accounting for about 32% of total dissolved N (TDN). It was estimated that a part of the DON input rate contributed to the excessive stream NO- ₃ output rate under the condition of the rapid mineralization and nitrification rates, which annual DON deposition rates were positively correlated with the stream NO₃ - output rates. The DON retention rate in the DON budget had a potential capacity, which contributed to the excessive stream NO- ₃ output rate without other N contributions (e.g. forest floor N or soil N).
Show more [+] Less [-]Using Sterols to Detect Pig Slurry Contribution to Soil Organic Matter

Samples of pig slurry, as well as dairy and poultry manures collected in Brittany (western France) were analysed to test the ability of sterol profiles to provide a fingerprint of pig slurry contribution to soil organic matter. The data show that the 5β-stanol, known as coprostanol, is the most abundant sterol present in pig slurry, whereas this compound occurs only in minor amounts in both poultry and dairy manures. Moreover, systematic variations of (campesterol + sitosterol)/cholesterol (i.e., C₂₈₊₂₉/C₂₇) and (coprostanol + epi-coprostanol)/cholesterol (i.e., 5β/C₂₇) ratios allow to discriminate clearly pig slurry from poultry and dairy manures. The robustness of the pig slurry “sterol fingerprint” was tested by analysing the sterol profiles of soil samples from an experimental field that had received a massive pig slurry input between 10 to 14 years ago. The results indicate that the specific sterol profile of pig slurry is conservative once the slurry has been incorporated into the soil. In particular, the diagnostic 5β/C₂₇ ratio proves to be constant with time in soils having received pig slurry application, even 10 years after the end of the application. The “sterol fingerprint” of pig slurry is thus sufficiently distinctive from dairy and poultry manures, and also sufficiently time-resistant, to be of diagnostic value in determining whether a soil sample was once contaminated by pig slurry.
