Incubation and pot experiments using poplar (Populus nigra L. cv. Wolterson) were performed in order to evaluate the questionable efficiency of EDDS-enhanced phytoextraction of Cu from contaminated soils. Despite the promising conditions of the experiment (low contamination of soils with a single metal with a high affinity for EDDS, metal tolerant poplar species capable of producing high biomass yields, root colonization by mycorrhizal fungi), the phytoextraction efficiency was not sufficient. The EDDS concentrations used in this study (3 and 6 mmol kg-1) enhanced the mobility (up to a 100-fold increase) and plant uptake of Cu (up to a 65-fold increase). However, despite EDDS degradation and the competition of Fe and Al for the chelant, Cu leaching cannot be omitted during the process. Due to the low efficiency, further research should be focused on other environment-friendly methods of soil remediation.

Long term trend analysis of bulk precipitation, throughfall and soil solution elemental fluxes from 12 years monitoring at 10 ICP Level II forest sites in the UK reveal coherent national chemical trends indicating recovery from sulphur deposition and acidification. Soil solution pH increased and sulphate and aluminium decreased at most sites. Trends in nitrogen were variable and dependant on its form. Dissolved organic nitrogen increased in bulk precipitation, throughfall and soil solution at most sites. Nitrate in soil solution declined at sites receiving high nitrogen deposition. Increase in soil dissolved organic carbon was detected - a response to pollution recovery, changes in soil temperature and/or increased microbial activity. An increase of sodium and chloride was evident - a possible result of more frequent storm events at exposed sites. The intensive and integrated nature of monitoring enables the relationships between climate/pollutant exposure and chemical/biological response in forestry to be explored.

Rumex crispus was grown under wet and dry conditions in two-chamber columns such that the roots were confined to one chamber by a 21 μm nylon mesh, thus creating a soil–root interface ('rhizoplane'). Element concentrations at 3 mm intervals below the ‘rhizoplane’ were measured. The hypothesis was that metals accumulate near plant roots more under wetland than dryland conditions. Patterns in element distribution were different between the treatments. Under dryland conditions Al, Ba, Cu, Cr, Fe, K, La, Mg, Na, Sr, V, Y and Zn accumulated in soil closest to the roots, above the ‘rhizoplane’ only. Under wetland conditions Al, Fe, Cr, K, V and Zn accumulated above as well as 3 mm below the ‘rhizoplane’ whereas La, Sr and Y accumulated 3 mm below the 'rhizoplane' only. Plants on average produced 1.5 times more biomass and element uptake was 2.5 times greater under wetland compared to dryland conditions.

Water treatment residuals (WTRs) are produced by the treatment of potable water with coagulating agents. Beneficial recycling in agriculture is hampered by the fact that WTRs contain potentially toxic contaminants (e.g. copper and aluminium) and they bind phosphorus strongly. These issues were investigated using a plant bioassay (Lactuca sativa), chemical extractions and an isotopic dilution technique. Two WTRs were applied to an acidic and a neutral pH soil at six rates. Reductions in plant growth in amended soils were due to WTR-induced P deficiency, rather than Al or Cu toxicity. The release of potentially toxic Al from WTRs was found to be mitigated by their alkaline nature and pH buffering capacity. However, acidification of WTRs was shown to release more soluble Al than soil naturally high in Al. Copper availability was relatively low in all treatments. However, the lability of WTR-Cu increased when the WTR was applied to the soil.

Applying an integrated approach using the Comet, micronucleus (MN), and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) assays, occurrence of erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities (ENAs) and the liver activity of antioxidants enzymes (catalase and glutathione-S-transferase (GST)) was carried out to evaluate the effects of acute (6, 24, and 96 h) and subchronic (15 days) exposures to aluminum on fish Prochilodus lineatus. The Comet assay showed that fish erythrocytes exhibited significantly higher DNA damage after 6 and 96 h of Al exposure. MN frequencies were very low and did not increase significantly after Al exposures, while ENAs frequency increased significantly after all exposure periods. RAPD profiles obtained with DNA from fish fins collected before the toxicity tests were compared to the profiles with DNA from gills and liver of the same fish sampled after Al exposures. Alterations in RAPD profiles, including appearance and disappearance of bands, after 6 h, 24 h, and 15 days of Al exposure were detected. Fish exposed to Al for 6 and 24 h also showed significant increases in GST and catalase activities. These results indicated that Al exposure was genotoxic to P. lineatus, inducing DNA damage in peripheral erythrocytes. The induction of antioxidant enzymes might be an indication that Al causes oxidative damage to DNA, while the very low frequency of MN suggests that Al does not produce clastogenic or aneugenic effects. Genotoxic effects after 15 days of Al exposure was revealed only by RAPD, showing that this assay represents a sensitive method to detect genotoxic damage, occasionally not detected by other genotoxic tests used in toxicological genetics studies.

Background, aim and scope The paper presents concentrations of trace elements in blood of homebred animals (cows and sheep) from Southern Serbia (Bujanovac) and the contents of natural and anthropogenic radionuclides and some heavy metals in feed. The region of Southern Serbia was exposed to contamination by depleted uranium ammunition during NATO attacks in 1999 and therefore, is of great concern to environmental pollution and human and animal health. Materials and methods Conventional instrumental and epithermal neutron activation analyses are used to measure trace elements in cow and sheep blood samples collected randomly at six locations in the region of Bujanovac (village of Borovac) in the spring of 2005. Samples of feed (grass and crops: corn, wheat and oats), collected on the same locations (households), are analysed for the contents of radionuclides on an HPGe detector (Ortec, relative efficiency 23%) by standard gamma spectrometry. The content of Hg, Pb and Cd in feed is determined by standard atomic absorption spectrometry on the VarianSpectra220/ThermoSolar GFS97 spectrometer. Results Concentrations of 29 elements (Na, Al (P), Cl, K, Sc, Cr, Mn, Ni, Fe, Co, Zn, Se, As, Br, Sr, Rb, Sb, In, I, Ba, Cs, La, Nd, Eu, Sm, Tb, Hf, Ta and Th) are determined in blood of the examined animals. In feeds, natural ⁴⁰K is found in all of the samples, cosmogenic ⁷Be and fission product ¹³⁷Cs are detected only in the grass samples, while heavy metals Hg, Cd and Pb are found in the range of 0.01-0.02, 0.84-1.15 and 0.74-7.34 mg/kg, respectively. Calculated soil-to-blood transfer factors are in a wide range of 8·10⁻⁶ to 64, as a result of varying significance of the elements in animal metabolism and feeding habits. Discussion The results of trace elements' concentrations in animal blood are in good agreement with available data for K, Ni, Zn, Se and Rb. Higher Br concentrations in animal blood are most probably caused by large biomass burning events during blood sampling. Very low concentration of Fe in cows and sheep confirms the results of previous biochemical studies on animal anaemia in the region. High concentration of As correlates with geochemical peculiarities of the Balkans and is also likely influenced by the use of pesticides in the agricultural production. For some of the elements (La, Nd, Eu, Sm, Tb, Sb, Hf, Ta, Th, In, Ba, Sr, Sc and Cs), there are few or no literature data. Therefore, some of the presented data are significant not only for the country and the region, but on a wider scale. Activities of natural radionuclides in feeds are within the average values reported for the region, while the activities of ²¹⁰Pb and ²³⁵/²³⁸U are below the limit of detection. This is in accordance with previous investigations showing no widespread contamination by depleted uranium in the area. Contents of Hg and Pb in feeds are below the nationally permissible levels, unlike the content of Cd which exceeds it, probably caused by the use of phosphate fertilisers and fossil fuel combustion in the area. Conclusions In general, the concentrations of trace elements in blood of homebred cows and sheep are in good agreement with reference materials, available literature data and the results of previous studies in the area. The exceptions are Fe, As and Br. The contents of natural and anthropogenic radionuclides in feeds are within the expected levels, and there are no signs of contamination by depleted uranium or other fission products. Apart from Cd, there are no signs of pollution by heavy metals in feeds. The highly sensitive method of instrumental neutron activation analysis provides data on the concentration of some elements in animal blood not previously reported for the region and elsewhere. Recommendations and perspectives The presented study is a part of the long term ongoing project on the health risk assessment on animals and humans in the region. The collected data is intended to provide a base for the animal and human risk assessment as well as an estimate of the general pollution status of the environment in the region. Since some of the investigated elements are classified as important trace elements for livestock, the results could also be used to balance and improve the animal diet and thus, improve the growth and reproduction rate.

Background, aims, and scope Heavy metal contaminants in environment, especially in drinking water, are always of great concern due to their health impact. Due to the use of heavy metals as catalysts during plastic syntheses, particularly antimony, human exposure to metal release from plastic bottles has been a serious concern in recent years. The aim and scope of this study were to assess metal contaminations leaching out from a series of recycling plastic bottles upon treatments. Methodology In this study, leaching concentrations of 16 metal elements were determined in 21 different types of plastic bottles from five commercial brands, which were made of recycling materials ranging from no. 1 to no. 7. Several sets of experiments were conducted to study the factors that could potentially affect the metal elements leaching from plastic bottles, which include cooling with frozen water, heating with boiling water, microwave, incubating with low-pH water, outdoor sunlight irradiation, and in-car storage. Results Heating and microwave can lead to a noticeable increase of antimony leaching relative to the controls in bottle samples A to G, and some even reached to a higher level than the maximum contamination level (MCL) of the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) regulations. Incubation with low-pH water, outdoor sunlight irradiation, and in-car storage had no significant effect on antimony leaching relative to controls in bottle samples A to G, and the levels of antimony leaching detected were below 6 ppb which is the MCL of USEPA regulations. Cooling had almost no effect on antimony leaching based on our results. For the other interested 15 metal elements (Al, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, As, Se, Mo, Ag, Cd, Ba, Tl, Pb), no significant leaching was detected or the level was far below the MCL of USEPA regulations in all bottle samples in this study. In addition, washing procedure did contribute to the antimony leaching concentration for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. The difference of antimony leaching concentration between washing procedure involved and no washing procedure involved (AC) was larger than zero for samples A to G. This interesting result showed that higher antimony concentration was detected in experiments with no washing procedures compared with those experiments with washing procedures. Our study results indicate that partial antimony leaching from PET bottles comes from contaminations on the surface of plastic during manufacturing process, while major antimony leaching comes from conditional changes. Conclusion The results revealed that heating and microwaving enhance antimony leaching significantly in PET plastic bottles. Plastic bottle manufacturers should consider the contaminations during manufacturing process and washing bottles before first use was strongly recommended to remove those contaminants.

Concept and purpose Virtually all water treatment facilities worldwide generate an enormous amount of water treatment residual (WTR) solids for which environmentally friendly end-use options are continually being sought as opposed to their landfilling. Aluminium-based WTR (Al-WTR) can offer huge benefits particularly for phosphorus (P) removal and biofilm attachment when used as media in engineered wetlands. However, potential environmental risks that may arise from the leaching out of its constituents must be properly evaluated before such reuse can be assured. This paper presents results of an assessment carried out to monitor and examine the leachability and leaching patterns of the constituents of an Al-WTR used as media in laboratory-scale engineered wetland systems. Main features, materials and methods Al-WTR was used as media in four different configurations of laboratory-scale engineered wetland systems treating agricultural wastewater. Selected metal levels were determined in the Al-WTR prior to being used while levels of total and dissolved concentration for the metals were monitored in the influent and effluent samples. The increase or decrease of these metals in the used Al-WTR and their potential for leaching were determined. Leached metal levels in the effluents were compared with relevant environmental quality standards to ascertain if they pose considerable risks. Results Aluminium, arsenic, iron, lead and manganese were leached into the treated effluent, but aluminium exhibited the least leaching potential relative to its initial content in the fresh Al-WTR. Levels of P increased from 0.13 mg-P/g (fresh Al-WTR) to 33.9-40.6 mg-P/g (used Al-WTR). Dissolved levels of lead and arsenic (except on one instance) were below the prescribed limits for discharge. However, total and dissolved levels of aluminium were in most cases above the prescribed limits for discharge, especially at the beginning of the experiments. Conclusions, recommendations and perspectives Overall, the study indicates that leaching is observed when Al-WTR is beneficially reused for enhanced P removal in engineered wetlands. In particular, levels of aluminium in the treated effluent beyond the prescribed limits of 0.2 mg/l were observed. However, since the results obtained indicate that aluminium leached is mostly associated with solids, a post-treatment unit which can further reduce the level of aluminium in the treated effluent by filtering out the solids could serve to mitigate this. In addition, plants used in such wetland systems can uptake metals and this can also be a potential solution to ameliorating such metal releases. Periodic monitoring is thus advised. Notwithstanding, the use of Al-WTR as a media in engineered wetlands can serve to greatly enhance the removal of P from wastewaters and also serve as support material for biofilm attachment.

Background, aim and scope The production of alumina involves its extraction from bauxite ore using sodium hydroxide under high temperature and pressure. This process yields a large amount of residue wastes, which are difficult to revegetate due to their inherent hostile properties—high alkalinity and sodicity, poor water retention and low nutrient availability. Although phosphorus (P) is a key element limiting successful ecosystem restoration, little information is available on the availability and dynamics of P in rehabilitated bauxite-processing residue sand (BRS). The major aim of this experiment was to quantify P availability and behaviour as affected by pH, source of BRS and di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) application rate. Materials and methods This incubation experiment was undertaken using three sources of BRS, three DAP application rates (low, without addition of DAP; medium, 15.07 mg P and 13.63 mg N of DAP per jar, 100 g BRS; and high, 30.15 mg P and 27.26 mg N per jar, 100 g BRS), and four BRS pH treatments (4, 7, 9 and 11 (original)). The moisture content was adjusted to 55% water holding capacity and each BRS sample was incubated at 25°C for a period of 119 days. After this period, Colwell P and 0.1 M H₂SO₄ extractable P in BRS were determined. In addition, P sequential fractionation was carried out and the concentration of P in each pool was measured. Results and discussion A significant proportion (37% recovered in Colwell P and 48% in 0.1 M H₂SO₄ extraction) of P added as DAP in BRS are available for plant use. The pH did not significantly affect 0.1 M H₂SO₄ extractable P, while concentrations of Colwell P in the higher initial pH treatments (pH 7, 9 and 11) were greater than in the pH 4 treatments. The labile fractions (sum of NH₄Cl (AP), bicarbonate and first sodium hydroxide extractable P (N(I)P)) consisted of 58-64% and 70-72% of total P in the medium and high DAP rate treatments, respectively. This indicates that most P added as DAP remained labile or moderately labile in BRS, either in solution, or in adsorbed forms on the surface of more crystalline P compounds, sesquioxides and carbonate, or associated with amorphous and some crystalline Al and Fe hydrous oxides. In addition, differences in the hydrochloric acid extractable P and the residual-P fractions among the treatments with and without DAP addition were relative small comparing with other P pools (e.g., NaOH extractable P pools), further indicating the limited capacity of BRS for fixing P added in Ca-P and other most recalcitrant forms. Conclusions P availability in the original BRS without addition of DAP was very low, mostly in recalcitrant form. It has been clearly demonstrated that significant proportions of P added as DAP could remain labile or moderately labile for plant use during the rehabilitation of bauxite-processing residue disposal areas. There was limited capacity of BRS for fixing P in more recalcitrant forms (e.g., Ca-P and residual-P). Concentrations of most P pools in BRS increased with the DAP application rate. The impact of the pH treatment on P availability varied with the type of P pools and the DAP rate. Recommendation and perspectives It is recommended that the development of appropriate techniques for more accurate estimation of P availability in BRS and the quantification of the potential leaching loss of P in BRS are needed for the accurate understanding of P availability and dynamics in BRS. In addition, application of organic matters (e.g., biosolids and biochar, etc.) to BRS may be considered for improving P availability and buffering capacity.

Background, aim, and scope Arthropods, with over a million species described, are ubiquitous throughout different environments. Knowledge of their responses to human impact is crucial for understanding and predicting changes in ecosystem structure and functions. Our aim was to investigate the general patterns and to identify sources of variation in changes of the diversity, abundance and fitness of terrestrial arthropods (including Arachnida, Collembola and Insecta) in habitats affected by point polluters. Main features We found 134 suitable studies which were published between 1965 and 2007. These data came from impact zones of 74 polluters in 20 countries with the largest representation from Russia (28 polluters), Poland (12 polluters) and the USA (six polluters). The database allowed calculation of 448 effect sizes (i.e. relative differences between measurements taken from polluted and control sites) on the effects of various point polluters like non-ferrous industries, aluminium plants, cement, magnezite, fertilising and chemical plants, power plants, iron- and steel-producing factories. We used meta-analysis to search for general effects and to compare between polluter types and arthropod groups, and linear regression to describe the latitudinal gradient and to quantify relationships between pollution and arthropod responses. Results The overall effect of pollution on arthropod diversity did not differ from zero. However, species richness of soil arthropods (both living on the soil surface and within the soil) tended to decrease, and species richness of herbivores to increase, near point polluters. Abundance of terrestrial arthropods near point polluters decreased in general. This decrease resulted from strong adverse effects on soil arthropods, especially on decomposers and predators. Densities of herbivores increased, but a number of research biases that we discovered in published data may have led to overestimation of the latter effect. The dome-shaped density pattern along pollution gradients was discovered only in 5% of data sets. Among herbivores, only free-living defoliators and sap-feeders demonstrated higher densities in polluted sites; the effects of pollution on other guilds were not significant. Near the polluters, conifers suffered higher increase in damage from herbivores than deciduous woody plants and herbs. Overall effect of pollution on arthropod performance was negative; in particular, individuals from polluted sites were generally smaller than individuals from control sites. This negative effect weakened with increase in duration of the pollution impact, hinting evolution of pollution resistance in populations inhabiting polluted sites. Stepwise regression analysis demonstrated that pollution-induced changes in both the density and performance of arthropods depended on climate of the locality. Negative effects on soil fauna increased with increase in annual precipitation; positive effects on herbivore population density increased with increases in both mean July temperature and annual precipitation. Discussion We detected effects of research methodology on the outcome of published studies. Many of them suffer from research bias—the tendency to collect data on organisms or under conditions in which one has an expectation of detecting significant effects. Pseudoreplicated studies (one polluted site contrasted to one control site) frequently reported larger effects than replicated studies (several polluted sites contrasted with several control sites). These methodological flaws especially influenced herbivory studies; we conclude that increase in herbivory in both heavily and moderately polluted habitats is not as frequent as it was earlier suggested. In contrast, the decrease in abundance of predators is likely to be a widespread phenomenon. Thus, our analysis supports the hypothesis that pollution may favour herbivore populations by creating an enemy-free space. Consistent declines in abundance of soil arthropods in impact zones of different polluters suggest that this group can potentially be used in bioindication of pollution-induced changes in terrestrial ecosystems. Conclusions Main effects of pollution on arthropod communities (decreased abundance of decomposers and predators and increased herbivory) may have negative consequences for structure and services of entire ecosystems. Responses of arthropods to pollution depend on both temperature and precipitation in such a way that ecosystem-wide adverse effects are likely to increase under predicted climate change. Recommendations and perspectives Our analysis confirmed that local severe impacts of industrial enterprises on biota are well-suited to reveal the direction and magnitude of the biotic effects of aerial pollution, as well as to explore the sources of variation in responses of organisms and communities. Although we analysed the effects of point polluters, our conclusions can be applied to predict consequences of pollution impacts on regional and even global scales. We argue that possible interactions between pollution and climate should be accounted for in the analyses of global change impacts on biota.
