The increasing demand for clean water resources for human consumption, is raising concerning about the sustainable worldwide provisioning. In Mexico, rivers near to high-density urbanizations are subject to irrational exploitation where polluted water is a risk for human health. Therefore, the aims of this study are to analyze water quality parameters and bacterial community dynamics to understand the relation between them, in the Apatlaco river, which presents a clear environmental perturbance. Parameters such as total coliforms, chemical oxygen demand, harness, ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, dissolved oxygen, total phosphorus, total dissolved solids, and temperature were analyzed in 17 sampling points along the river. The high pollution level was registered in the sampling point 10 with 480 mg/L chemical oxygen demand, 7 mg/L nitrite, 34 mg/L nitrate, 2 mg/L dissolved oxygen, and 299 mg/L of total dissolved solids. From these sites, we selected four samples for DNA extraction and performed a metagenomic analysis using a whole metagenome shotgun approach, to compare the microbial communities between polluted and non-polluted sites. In general, Proteobacteria was the most representative phylum in all sites. However, the clean water reference point was enriched with microorganism from the Limnohabitans genus, a planktonic bacterium widespread in freshwater ecosystems. Nevertheless, in the polluted sampled sites, we found a high abundance of potential opportunistic pathogen genera such as Acinetobacter, Arcobacter, and Myroides, among others. This suggests that in addition to water contamination, an imminent human health risk due to pathogenic bacteria can potentially affect a population of ∼1.6 million people dwelling nearby. These results will contribute to the knowledge regarding anthropogenic pollution on the microbial population dynamic and how they affect human health and life quality.

To better understand the mechanism of PM₂.₅ explosive growth (EG), we conducted concurrent measurements of gaseous pollutants, PM₂.₅ and its chemical composition (inorganic ions, organic carbon, and element carbon) with a time resolution of 1 h in Shanghai in late autumn and winter from 2014 to 2017. In this study, the EG events, which are defined as the net increase in the mass concentration of PM₂.₅ by more than 100 μg m⁻³ within hours, are separately discussed for 3, 6, or 9 h. The number of EG events decreased from 19 cases in 2014 to 6 cases in 2017 and the corresponding PM₂.₅ concentration on average decreased from 183.6 μg m⁻³ to 128.8 μg m⁻³. Both regional transport and stagnant weather (windspeed < 2.0 m s⁻¹) could lead to EG events. The potential source contribution function (PSCF) shows that the major high-pollution region is in East China (including Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong, and Anhui Province) and the North China Plain. The contribution of stagnant conditions to EG episode hours of 55% (198 h, 156.9 μg m⁻³) is higher than that of regional transport (45%, 230 h, 163.0 μg m⁻³). To study the impact of local emission, chemical characteristics and driving factors of EG were discussed under stagnant conditions. The major components contributing to PM₂.₅ are NO₃⁻ (17.9%), organics (14.1%), SO₄²⁻ (13.1%), and NH₄⁺ (13.1%). The driving factors of EG events are the secondary aerosol formation of sulfate and nitrate and primary emissions (vehicle emissions, fireworks, and biomass burning), but the secondary transformation contributes more to EG events. The formation of sulfate and nitrate is dominated by gas-phase oxidation and heterogeneous reactions, which are enhanced by a high relative humidity. The current study helps to understand the chemical mechanism of haze and provides a scientific basis for air pollution control in Shanghai.

China has been faced with severe haze pollution, which is hazardous to human health. Among the air pollutants, PM2.5 (particles with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm) is the most dangerous because of its toxicity and impact on human health and ecosystems. However, there has been limited research on PM2.5 particle toxicity. In the present study, we collected daily PM2.5 samples from January 1 to March 31, 2018 and selected samples to extract water-soluble species, including SO42−, NO3−, WSOC, and NH4+. These samples represented clean, good, slight, moderate, and heavy pollution days. After extraction using an ultrasonic method, PM2.5 solutions were obtained. We used Chlorella as the test algae and studied the content of chlorophyll a, as well as the variation in fluorescence when they were placed into the PM2.5 extraction solution, and their submicroscopic structure was analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that when the air quality was relatively clean and good (PM2.5 concentration ≤ 75 μg m−3), the PM2.5 extraction solutions had no inhibiting effects on Chlorella, whereas when the air quality was polluted (PM2.5 concentration > 75 μg m−3) and heavily polluted (PM2.5 concentration > 150 μg m−3), with increasing PM2.5 concentrations and exposure time, the chlorophyll a content in Chlorella decreased. Moreover, the maximum photochemical quantum yield (Fv/Fm) of Chlorella obviously decreased, indicating chlorophyll inhibition during polluted days with increasing PM2.5 concentrations. The effects on the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were also obvious, leading to an increase of energy dissipated per unit reaction center (DIo/RC), suggesting that Chlorella could survive when exposed to PM2.5 solutions, whereas the physiological activities were significantly inhibited. The TEM analysis showed that there were few effects on Chlorella cell microstructure during clean days, whereas plasmolysis occurred during light- and medium-polluted days. With increasing pollution levels, plasmolysis became more and more apparent, until the organelles inside the cells were thoroughly destroyed and most of the parts could not be recognized.

Biochar application to fertilized paddy soils has been recommended as an effective countermeasure to mitigate methane (CH₄) emissions, but its mechanism and effective duration has not yet been adequately elucidated. A laboratory incubation experiment was performed to gain insight into the combined effects of fresh and six-year aged biochar on potential methane oxidation (PMO) in paddy soils with ammonium or nitrate-amendment. Results showed that both ammonium and nitrate were essential for CH₄ oxidation though high ammonium (4 mM) inhibited PMO as compared to low ammonium (1 mM and 2 mM), and that nitrate was better in promoting PMO than ammonium. Moreover, ammonium-amendment promoted type I pmoA, and nitrate-amendment enhanced type II pmoA abundance. Both fresh and aged biochar increased PMO as well as nitrification by enhancing the total, type I and type II methanotrophs as compared to the control. Increased soil PMO with mineral N input in both six-year aged biochar and fresh biochar amendment, indicating that biochar mitigated CH₄ by promoting PMO for prolonged period in fertilized paddy soils.

Nitrogen (N) deposition has rapidly increased and is influencing forest ecosystem processes and functions on a global scale. Understanding process-specific N transformations, i.e., gross N transformations, in forest soils in response to N deposition is of great significance to gain mechanistic insights on the linkages between global N deposition and N availability or loss in forest soils. In this paper, we review factors controlling N mineralization, nitrification and N immobilization, particularly in relation to N deposition, discuss the limitations of net N transformation studies, and synthesize the literature on the effect of N deposition on gross N transformations in forest ecosystems. We found that more than 97% of published papers evaluating the effect of N deposition (including N addition experiments that simulate N deposition) on soil N cycle determined net rates of mineralization and nitrification, showing that N deposition significantly increased those rates by 24.9 and 153.9%, respectively. However, studies on net N transformation do not provide a mechanistic understanding of the effect of N deposition on N cycling. To date, a small number of studies (<20 published papers) have directly quantified the effect of N deposition on gross N transformation rates, limiting our understanding of the response of soil N cycling to N deposition. The responses to N deposition of specific N transformation processes such as autotrophic nitrification, heterotrophic nitrification, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium, N mineralization, and N immobilization are poorly studied. Future research needs to use more holistic approaches to study the impact of N deposition on gross N transformation rates, N loss and retention, and their microbial-driven mechanisms to provide a better understanding of the processes involved in N transformations, and to understand the differential responses between forest and other ecosystems.

Release of phosphorus (P) from sediment to overlying water has to be dealt with to address algal blooms in eutrophic lakes. In this study, the sediment from the Lake Taihu was amended with lanthanum modified zeolite (LMZ) to reduce P release under different pH, temperature and anaerobic conditions. LMZ performed well, to decreasing P concentration in Lake Taihu water in the presence of sediment. The EPC₀ value, the critical P concentration at which there was neither P adsorption nor P release, was lowered by adding LMZ, suggesting that amendment with LMZ could diminish the risk of P release from the sediment. From the Langmuir isotherm model, the adsorption capacity of phosphate by LMZ was estimated to be 64.1 mgP/g. The LMZ-amended sediment had a higher content of stable P forms (HCl-P and Res-P) and a lower content of P forms with a high (NH₄Cl-P and BD-P) or medium-high (NaOH-P and Org-P) risk of release, when compared with the original sediment. The fractionation simulates conditions which release potentially mobile P which can then be simply re-bound to LMZ. At high pH (>9.0), anaerobic condition or high temperature promoted the liberation of P from sediment. However, P release could be greatly inhibited by LMZ. In addition, although Mn²⁺ and NH₄⁺ ions were released from sediment under the anaerobic condition, the release could also be hindered by adding LMZ. LMZ is a promising P inactivation agent to manage eutrophication in the sediment of Lake Taihu.

The conversion of natural saltmarshes to shrimp aquaculture ponds can potentially influence the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients in coastal wetlands, but its impact on the dynamics of sediment dissimilatory nitrate (NO3−) reduction remains poorly understood. In this study, three sediment NO3− reduction processes including denitrification (DNF), anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX), and dissimilatory NO3− reduction to ammonium (DNRA) were examined simultaneously in a natural saltmarsh and two shrimp culture ponds (5- and 18-year-old) in July and November, using nitrogen (N) isotope-tracing experiments. Our results showed that sediment potential DNF, ANAMMOX and DNRA rates were generally higher in the shrimp culture ponds than the natural saltmarsh in the two seasons. The rates of all three processes generally increased with the age of shrimp ponds, with the magnitude of increase being less pronounced for DNF and ANAMMOX than DNRA. The contribution of DNRA to total NO3− reduction increased significantly following saltmarsh conversion to shrimp ponds, suggesting that DNRA became an increasingly important biogeochemical process under shrimp culture. DNRA competed with DNF and limited reactive N loss to some extent after natural saltmarshes converted to shrimp culture ponds. The results of redundancy analysis revealed that the availability of substrates and sulfides in sediments, rather than the bacteria gene abundance, were the most important factor influencing the NO3− reduction processes. Overall, our findings highlighted that shrimp-aquaculture reclamation may aggravate nitrogen loading in coastal wetlands by promoting the production of bioavailable ammonium.

China continues to suffer from severe acid deposition, despite the government implying a series of policies to control air pollution. In this study, rainwater samples were collected from 2011 to 2016 in Sichuan province to measure the pH values and the concentrations of nine inorganic ions (SO₄²⁻, NO₃⁻, NH₄⁺, Cl⁻, Na⁺, Ca²⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, and F⁻), and then to investigate their spatiotemporal variations. Besides, the dominant sources for the acidic ions in the precipitation were also revealed by statistical model. The results showed that the rainwater continued to be highly acidic, and the Volume-Weighted Mean (VWM) pH value was calculated to be 5.18 during 2011 and 2016. NH₄⁺, Ca²⁺, NO₃⁻, and SO₄²⁻ were the dominant water-soluble inorganic ions, accounting for 79.2% of the total ions on average. The remarkable decrease in NO₃⁻ and SO₄²⁻ concentrations (from 75.9 to 54.3 μeq L⁻¹ and from 285 to 145 μeq L⁻¹, respectively) resulted in an increase in the pH value of rainwater from 5.24 in 2011 to 5.70 in 2016. The concentrations of SO₄²⁻, NO₃⁻, F⁻, Na⁺, and K⁺ showed remarkably seasonal variation, with the highest value observed in winter, followed by spring and autumn, and the lowest value observed in summer. High VWM concentration of these ions in winter were mainly due to adverse meteorological conditions (e.g., rare rainfall, lower planetary boundary height, and stagnant air) and intensive anthropogenic emissions. SO₄²⁻, NO₃⁻, and F⁻ ions peaked in the southeastern Sichuan province, which is a typical industrial region. NH₄⁺ concentrations decreased from 268 μeq L⁻¹ in the east to 10.4 μeq L⁻¹ in the western Sichuan province, which could be related to the development of agriculture in the eastern Sichuan province. Ca²⁺ peaked in southeastern Sichuan province due to intensive construction activities and severe stone desertification. On the basis of Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) analysis, four sources of inorganic ions in rainwater were identified, including anthropogenic source, crust, biomass burning, and aging sea salt aerosol. Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) was used to find the spatial correlations between the socio-economic factors and ions in the rainwater. At the regional scale, the influence of fertilizer consumption and Gross Agricultural Production (GAP) on NH₄⁺ increased from east to west; moreover the influence of Gross Industrial Production (GIP) on SO₄²⁻ and NO₃⁻ also increased.

Rapid development of Bohai and Yellow Sea Economic Rim has led to the concern of emerging contamination of marine environments. This study investigated the spatial distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in Bohai and Yellow Sea areas. A large scale sampling from Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea and the major cities along the coastline from the mouth of Yalu River to the Yangtze River was performed. The spatial distribution of target ARGs based on the absolute abundances was in the trend of river water ≈ coastal water > the Bohai Sea > the Yellow Sea, inshore > offshore and inner bay > bay mouth. The total absolute abundances of selected ARGs in the coastal waters (1.23 × 10⁴–3.94 × 10⁵ copies/mL) were about 1–4 orders of magnitude higher than those in the sea (21.1–8.00 × 10³ copies/mL). The abundances of ARGs fluctuated greatly in the Yellow Sea and the coastal areas. Sulfonamide resistance genes hold the highest abundances in the Bohai and Yellow Sea (up to 2.13 × 10³ copies/mL of sul1 and 6.23 × 10³ copies/mL of sul2), followed by tetracycline and quinolone resistance genes, while qnrA hold the highest abundances in coastal areas (up to 3.66 × 10⁵ copies/mL). The distribution coefficients of target genes between sediments and corresponding water samples were more than 1.0 in the majority of different aquatic systems. According to the principle component analysis and redundancy analysis, water samples collected from the sea clustered together while those from the coastal zone and rivers were separated. Ammonium and nitrate played important roles in the distribution and variation of ARGs. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the potential multi-antibiotics resistant bacteria were detected with higher abundances in the Yellow Sea than in the Bohai Sea. These observations provided a comprehensive new insight into the pollution status of ARGs in the Bohai and Yellow Sea areas.

Changzhou, an industrial city in the Yangtze River Delta, has been experiencing serious haze pollution, particularly in winter. However, studies pertaining to the haze in Changzhou are very limited, which makes it difficult to understand the characteristics and formation of winter haze in this area, and develop effective control measures. In this study, we carried out continuous online observation of particulate matter, chemical components, and meteorology in Changzhou in February 2017. Our results showed that haze pollution occurred frequently in Changzhou winter and exhibited two patterns: dry haze with low relative humidity (RH) and wet haze with high RH. Water-soluble inorganic ions (SO₄²⁻, NO₃⁻, and NH₄⁺) accounted for ∼52.2% of the PM₂.₅ mass, of which sulfate was dominant in wet haze periods while nitrate was dominant in other periods. With the deterioration of haze pollution, the proportion of nitrate in PM₂.₅ increased, while sulfate proportion increased under wet haze and decreased under dry haze. Dry haze and wet haze appeared under slow north wind and south wind, respectively, and strong north wind or sea breeze scavenged pollution. We found that formation of nitrate occurred rapidly in daytime with high concentrations of odd oxygen (Oₓ = O₃ + NO₂), whereas formation of sulfate occurred rapidly during nighttime with high RH, indicating that photochemistry and heterogeneous reaction were the major formation mechanisms for nitrate and sulfate, respectively. Through the cluster analysis of 36-h backward trajectories, five sources of air masses from three directions were identified. High PM₂.₅ concentrations (84.1 μg m⁻³ on average) usually occurred under the influence of two clusters (46%) from the northwest, indicating that regional transport from northern China aggravated the winter haze pollution in Changzhou. Emission reduction, particularly the mobile sources, and regional joint prevention and control can help to mitigate the winter haze in Changzhou.
