The increasing use of silver (Ag) nanoparticles [containing either elemental Ag (Ag-NPs) or AgCl (AgCl-NPs)] in commercial products such as textiles will most likely result in these materials reaching wastewater treatment plants. Previous studies indicate that a conversion of Ag-NPs to Ag2S is to be expected during wastewater transport/treatment. However, the influence of surface functionality, the nature of the core structure and the effect of post-processing on Ag speciation in sewage sludge/biosolids has not been investigated. This study aims at closing these knowledge gaps using bench scale anaerobic digesters spiked with Ag nitrate, three different types of Ag-NPs, and AgCl-NPs at environmentally realistic concentrations. The results indicate that neither surface functionality nor the different compositions of the NP prevented the formation of Ag2S. Silver sulfides, unlike the sulfides of other metals present in sewage sludge, were stable over a six month period simulating composting/stockpiling.

A pilot-scale anaerobic bioreactor with high levels of microbial sulfate reduction, known to be capable of removing cationic metals from a metal- and acid-contaminated waste stream, was utilized to determine if the system would be effective in removing metals in the form of oxyanions such as arsenate and chromate. The system removed 90 % to >99 % of the arsenic and between 86 % and 94 % of the chromium from a waste stream containing 5 mg/L of each. Cadmium, copper, iron, lead, and zinc also were removed. An equilibrium geochemistry computer modeling code, MINTEQAK, modified from MINTEQA2, was used for the chemical modeling of processes in the bioreactor. Experimental evidence on the chemical and biological reduction of arsenic and chromium and fluorescent diffraction analysis of precipitates support the following hypotheses: the primary removal process for chromium was the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by sulfides, followed by precipitation of chromium hydroxide [Cr(OH) 3(s)]; removal of arsenic was by direct microbial enzymatic reduction of As(V) to As(III) followed by precipitation of arsenic sulfides (As 2S3 or AsS). Experimental evidence and modeling with MINTEQAK confirmed that 90 % to 95 % of the removal of arsenic and chromium occurred in the first quarter volume of the bioreactor. Additional removal of arsenic and chromium occurred in the remaining volume of the bioreactor. The use of a sulfate reduction-based anaerobic treatment system was effective for metal-laden wastewater with elevated concentrations of arsenic and chromium. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

Anaerobic digestion is one of the most effective means for the stabilisation of sludge. However, it has a very slow rate-limiting hydrolysis phase which is attributed to the low biodegradability of cell walls and the presence of extracellular biopolymers. This study aims at investigating the effect of ultrasonic, microwave and combined microwave–ultrasonic treatment on biogas production, solids removal and dewaterability of anaerobically digested sludge. A comparison was made between the three pretreatment techniques conducting the digestion tests under similar conditions on the same synthetic sludge sample inoculated by digested sewage sludge. The experimental results depict that the combined microwave–ultrasonic treatment (2,450-MHz, 800-W and 3-min microwave treatment followed by 0.4-W/ml and 10-min ultrasonication) resulted in better digester performance than ultrasonic or microwave treatment. Mesophilic digestion of combined microwave–ultrasonic-pretreated sludge produced a significantly higher amount of methane (147 ml) after a sludge retention time of 17 days, whereas the ultrasonic- and microwave-treated sludge samples produced 30 and 16 ml of methane, respectively. The combined microwave–ultrasonic treatment resulted in total solids reduction of 56.8 % and volatile solid removal of 66.8 %. Furthermore, this combined treatment improved dewaterability of the digested sludge by reducing the capillary suction time (CST) down to 92 s, as compared to CST of 331 s for microwave-treated and 285 s for ultrasonically treated digested sludge samples. Optimisation tests were also carried out to determine the best combination.

Nitrate addition stimulated sulfide oxidation by increasing the activity of nitrate-reducing sulfide-oxidizing bacteria (NR-SOB), decreasing the concentration of dissolved H2S in the water phase and, consequently, its release to the atmosphere of a pilot-scale anaerobic bioreactor. The effect of four different concentrations of nitrate (0.12, 0.24, 0.50, and 1.00 mM) was investigated for a period of 3 days in relation to sulfide concentration in two bioreactors set up at Guadalete wastewater treatment plant (Jerez de la Frontera, Spain). Physicochemical variables were measured in water and air, and the activity of bacteria implicated in the sulfur and nitrogen cycles was analyzed in the biofilms and in the water phase of the bioreactors. Biofilms were a net source of sulfide for the water and gas phases (7.22±5.3 μmol S-1) in the absence of nitrate dosing. Addition of nitrate resulted in a quick (within 3 h) decrease of sulfide both in the water and atmospheric phases. Sulfide elimination efficiency in the water phase increased with nitrate concentrations following the Michaelis-Menten kinetics (Ks=0.63 mM NO3-). The end of nitrate addition resulted in a recovery or increase of initial net sulfide production in about 3 h. Addition of nitrate increased the activity of NR-SOB and decreased the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria. Results confirmed the role of NR-SOB on hydrogen sulfide consumption coupled with nitrate reduction and sulfate recycling, revealing Sulfurimonas denitrificans and Paracoccus denitrificans as NR-SOB of great importance in this process. © Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2013.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emission in wastewater treatment plants of the pulp-and-paper industry was estimated by using a dynamic mathematical model. Significant variations were shown in the magnitude of GHG generation in response to variations in operating parameters, demonstrating the limited capacity of steady-state models in predicting the time-dependent emissions of these harmful gases. The examined treatment systems used aerobic, anaerobic, and hybrid—anaerobic/aerobic—biological processes along with chemical coagulation/flocculation, anaerobic digester, nitrification and denitrification processes, and biogas recovery. The pertinent operating parameters included the influent substrate concentration, influent flow rate, and temperature. Although the average predictions by the dynamic model were only 10 % different from those of steady-state model during 140 days of operation of the examined systems, the daily variations of GHG emissions were different up to ±30, ±19, and ±17 % in the aerobic, anaerobic, and hybrid systems, respectively. The variations of process variables caused fluctuations in energy generation from biogas recovery by ±16, ±17, and ±14 % in the three examined systems, respectively. The lowest variations were observed in the hybrid system, showing the stability of this particular process design.
