The larvae of congeneric gastropods showed differential responses to the combined effects of ocean acidification, temperature and salinity

The tolerance and physiological responses of the larvae of two congeneric gastropods, the intertidal Nassarius festivus and subtidal Nassarius conoidalis, to the combined effects of ocean acidification (pCO2 at 380, 950, 1250ppm), temperature (15, 30°C) and salinity (10, 30psu) were compared. Results of three-way ANOVA on cumulative mortality after 72-h exposure showed significant interactive effects in which mortality increased with pCO2 and temperature, but reduced at higher salinity for both species, with higher mortality being obtained for N. conoidalis. Similarly, respiration rate of the larvae increased with temperature and pCO2 level for both species, with a larger percentage increase for N. conoidalis. Larval swimming speed increased with temperature and salinity for both species whereas higher pCO2 reduced swimming speed in N. conoidalis but not N. festivus. The present findings indicated that subtidal congeneric species are more sensitive than their intertidal counterparts to the combined effects of these stressors.

The influence of structure on degradation of five halogenated phenols (XPs) by UV/H₂O₂process was investigated. The combined influence of type or number of substituents and UV/H₂O₂process parameters (pH and [H₂O₂]) on the degradation kinetics of 2-fluorophenol (2-FP), 2-chlorophenol (2-CP), 2-bromophenol (2-BP), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) was studied using modified miscellaneous 3³full factorial design and response surface modeling (RSM). Studied XPs obey first-order degradation kinetics within the investigated range of process parameters. Determined degradation rate constants (kₒbₛ) were correlated with process and structural parameters by the quadratic polynomial models. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) demonstrated RSM models’ accuracy and showed that, in addition to pH and [H₂O₂], model terms related with the pollutant structure are highly influential. kₒbₛof mono-XPs follow the decreasing order 2-FP, 2-CP, and 2-BP, while CPs follow the decreasing order 2-CP, 2,4-DCP, and 2,4,6-TCP. Biodegradability (biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)₅/chemical oxygen demand (COD)) and toxicity (TU) were evaluated prior to the treatment and at the reference time intervals. The observed differences are correlated with the structural characteristics of studied XPs.

In agricultural areas, pesticides can enter receiving waterbodies by means of agricultural runoff and pollute these systems. Constructed wetlands are capable of removing several pollutants including pesticides. Unfortunately, few studies are from South America, and therefore, information is urgently needed on pesticide mitigation in agricultural runoff by native plants. To this aim, an experimental setup of polypropylene tubs was used, which were planted with two types of native plants (Nymphaea amazonum and Eleocharis mutata). Mesocosms were exposed to low (10 μg/l) and high (30 μg/l) target concentrations of lambda-cyhalothrin, while for imidacloprid, a low (60 μg/l), high (180 μg/l), and an extra high (1,000 μg/l) dose, were applied using batch experiments of 2 weeks each. Removal efficiencies for lambda-cyhalothrin from the water phase showed 100 % removal at 72 h for both low and high target concentrations for N. amazonum mesocosms, while for E. mutata mesocosms, a 100 % removal was observed at 48 h for mesocosms exposed to low target concentrations and for high target concentrations at 72 h. For imidacloprid, a 100 % removal was observed for E. mutata and 86 % for N. amazonum mesocosms exposed to low target concentrations (60 μg/l) at 216 h. For the highest dose (1,000 μg/l), the removal efficiency was on average 72 % at 216 h for both types of mesocosms. Statistical two-way ANOVA analysis (α = 0.05) showed that the removal of lambda-cyhalothrin was independent of the dose applied and the plant type, while for imidacloprid, removal was dependent on the dose applied and independent of the plant type. After the experimental period, analyses of the plants and sediment showed that 48.5 % of the applied amount of lambda-cyhalothrin was detected in the sediment and 0.4 % in plant material (shoots and leaves), while the amount in roots was below the limit of detection for N. amazonum mesocosms. For E. mutata mesocosms, 44.6 % of lambda-cyhalothrin was detected in sediment and 0.5 % in roots. For N. amazonum mesocosms, 78.9 % of the applied amount of imidacloprid was retained in plants (plant material and roots) and 17.31 % in sediment, while for E. mutata mesocosms only 0.5 % of imidacloprid was detected in plant material and roots. In this experiment, the DT₅₀of lambda-cyhalothrin in the water phase of both types of mesocosms was on average 1 day, while for imidacloprid, this was calculated to be around 1–10 days. The results obtained provide necessary information for the construction of a field scale wetland capable of efficient removal of pesticides in agricultural runoff.

The study aimed to investigate the biodegradation of contaminated soil with biodiesel, diesel, and petroleum by autochthonous soil microorganisms and also enriched with Bacillus subtilis by means of colorimetric method. The phytotoxicity was evaluated in recently contaminated soil and after 240 days to ensure the decrease of toxicity. The biodegradation assessment was carried out with redox 2,6-dichlorophenol indophenol (DCPIP) indicator and by the extraction of the contaminant in the soil with hexane. The amount of contaminant extracted from recently contaminated soil was compared to the amount found on the buried samples for 240 days. The phytotoxicity rates were evaluated by the use of Lactuca sativa seeds. Values of root and hypocotyl elongation were subjected to analysis of variance using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results revealed that the autochthonous microorganisms were active on recently contaminated soil with biodiesel, because all biodiesel was biodegraded. Hence, only 0.001 g of biodiesel was extracted, and the phytotoxicity decreased after 240 days. On the other hand, the contaminated soil with diesel and petroleum was little active in 2,6-DCPIP test, and consequently, there was a large contaminant amount in soil after 240 days. Furthermore, petroleum and diesel were phytotoxic after biodegradation. The complex composition of the petroleum and diesel requires interactions of the microbial community able to biodegrade hydrocarbons and also metabolites from biodegradation. The naturally present microorganisms in the soil were capable of degrading the pollutant as much as the samples enriched with B. subtilis. The 2,6-DCPIP test is a simple and inexpensive methodology to analyze the potential biodegradation of all microorganisms of the soil and if the inoculation of the biodegrading microorganisms it will be necessary. Therefore, it would be helpful in bioremediation strategies.

The growth behavior of canary grass (Phalaris canariensis L) when cultivated in presence of farming fuels is reported in this work. P. canariensis L. is relevant in several countries. It is an emergent plant for phytoremediation and biofuel activities. The following variables: root length, stem length, total plant weight, green tissue weight (tiller, leaf), and total chlorophyll and chlorophyll a/b ratio, were monitored during the growth in presence of commercial fuels (premium grade, regular grade, diesel, and kerosene) at different concentrations. We applied a comprehensive statistical analysis to understand the results: Univariate analysis, factorial analysis of variance, and subsequent Tukey test were applied to the variables to assess the significance of the differences found. The normality of these variables was analyzed with the Shapiro Wilk test. All parameters were affected by all type and concentrations of fuels and its interaction. This is one of the first reported cases which describe the growth parameters responses from canary grass when cultivated in presence of an essentially constant concentration of farming fuels.

Interspecific comparison in metals and PAHs profile in three lichen species, Flavoparmelia caperata, Phaeophyscia hispidula and Pyxine sorediata, were studied in different altitudinal gradients of the Western Himalayas. The species collected from 14 sites, enroute from Dehradun to Morinda (243 Km) including the trekking route 42 Km from Taluka to Morinda having an altitudinal gradient between 850–3,750 m, were analysed for their metals and PAHs. The species showed similar metal as well as PAHs profile under similar altitudinal gradients in the sequence of F. caperata > P. hispidula > P. sorediata. The difference in pollutant concentrations within each lichen species may be related to intrinsic attributes of the species, such as thallus morphology and the presence of lichen substances which are responsible for the sensitivity and accumulation potential of a particular species. Novelty of the present study lies on the fact that all the species show a similar efficiency of reflecting the environmental condition of the area, albeit the coefficient values of individual species for individual pollutant obtained by three-factor ANOVA revealed that the bioaccumulation affinity of F. caperata is significantly higher than P. hispidula and P. sorediata. For individual metals, F. caperata has a higher affinity for Al, Cr, Fe, Pb and Zn while P. hispidula has a significant positive affinity for Fe and Pb. PCA analysis of sites with respect to pollutant revealed the segregation of sites based on source and distance. Combining the bioaccumulation potential parameters along with geostatistical (GIS) techniques establishes that F. caperata species is a better accumulator of metals and PAHs in comparison to P. hispidula and P. sorediata in the temperate regions of the Himalaya.

Seventeen organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were investigated in the water and sediments from a waterbird-inhabited lake (Yangchaihu Lake) to evaluate their current pollution levels and potential risks. The concentrations of total OCPs in water and sediments were 10.12–59.75 ng/l and 4.25–27.35 ng/g dry weight, respectively. Hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) were the most abundant OCPs, while HCB and cyclodiene pesticides were detected with low levels. Levels of ∑OCPs (sum of 17 OCPs) at sites highly influenced by waterbirds were significantly higher than the sites with no significant waterbird populations (one-way ANOVA, P < 0.05), suggesting that bird activities were one reason for concentration distribution of these pollutants. Compositional and source analyses of OCPs in water and sediments indicated that there might be fresh introduction of lindane and heptachlor. The partitions of most OCPs were not in equilibrium between water and sediments. The results of an ecological risk assessment showed that residue levels of DDTs in the studied area might pose adverse effects on ecosystems.

In this paper, degradation of a mixture of three azo dyes was studied by the photo-assisted electrochemical process using an O₂-diffusion cathode containing carbon nanotubes and boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode. The concentration of three textile dyes (C.I. Acid Orange 8 (AO8), C.I. Acid Orange 10 (AO10), and C.I. Acid Orange 12 (AO12)) was determined simultaneously despite the severe overlap of their spectra. For this purpose, partial least square (PLS), as a multivariate calibration method, was utilized based on recording UV–Vis spectra during the decolorization process. Moreover, the central composite design was used for the modeling of photo-assisted electrochemical decolorization of the aqueous solutions containing three dyes. The investigated parameters were the initial concentration of three dyes, applied current and reaction time. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that the obtained regression models match the experimental results well with R (Khataee et al. 2010, Clean-Soil Air Water 38 (1):96–103, 2010) of 0.972, 0.971, and 0.957 for AO8, AO10, and AO12, respectively. Three-dimensional surface and contour plots were applied to describe the relation between experimental conditions and the observed response. The results of TOC analysis confirmed good ability of proposed photo-assisted electrochemical process for degradation and mineralization of textile industry wastewater.

Blood levels of the elements Cu, Zn, Se, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb have been determined in 62 Nigerian women who were occupationally exposed to vehicular pollution. Mercury was determined using a direct mercury analyzer, while all the other elements were determined by an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer system. The mean values for all the toxic elements were all within the recommended desirable/tolerable limits, except for Se (0.44 μg/mL, compared with <0.2 μg/mL recommended by the WHO). More than 98 % of the subjects had blood selenium levels higher than this recommended limit. For As, Hg, and Pb, the corresponding figures of subjects with blood levels above the recommended limits were 4, 8, and 19.3 %, respectively. When the subjects were grouped according to their body mass indexes as normal, underweight, overweight, and obese, analysis of variance shows that mean blood levels of Cu, As, and, to some extent Hg were significantly different in the four nutritional status groups. Blood Hg level correlates significantly with blood As in all the groups, except in obese subjects. Also, a significant correlation between age and blood Hg was observed only in normal subjects and between age and blood Pb only in obese subjects. These results suggest that nutritional status could influence both elemental levels and the interactions between trace elements in the blood of female subjects. Nutrition is therefore a factor to consider in efforts to modify human susceptibility to toxic elements.

High amounts of humic substances (HS) are commonly found in natural acidic waterways and have been suggested to offer some protection against low pH. This study investigated the ability of HS to decrease respiratory stress in eastern rainbowfish (Melanotaenia splendida splendida) exposed to decreases in pH (range of 7–3.5) in soft and hard water. Repeated measures ANOVA revealed a significant difference in respiration (time taken for ten operculum movements) between pH and HS treatments, with a significant interaction between pH and HS present in 5/6 trials. Respiratory stress was shown to increase with increasing acidity, but significantly decreased in treatments with HS (10 and 20 mg/L) compared to those without. The fish exposed to pH treatments without HS also displayed increased hyperactivity, larger operculum movements and increased mucous production. Increased morbidity was shown in HS treatments at pH 3.5 (soft water) and at pH 4 (hard water) compared to treatment without HS. This indicates that HS is helpful in ameliorating the effects of decreased pH on respiration at sublethal pH levels; however, as pH decreases further, it seems that HS increases the toxicity (morbidity) of the low pH.
