In order to investigate the impacts of dam-related water impoundment on the spatial-temporal variations and transport of anthropogenic organic pollutants, 15 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in water samples from the Shuikou Reservoir (SKR) of the Minjiang River. The SKR was formed after the construction of the Shuikou Dam, which is the largest hydropower station in Southeast China. The water samples were collected from the backwater zone of the SKR, in both the wet and dry seasons, corresponding to the drainage and impoundment periods of water flow, respectively. The concentrations of the dissolved PAHs in surface water from the wet season (average of 161 ± 97 ng L⁻¹) were significantly higher (ANOVA, p < 0.01) than those from the dry season (average of 43 ± 21 ng L⁻¹). PAH concentrations in the SKR decreased from upstream (industrialized cities) to downstream (rural towns or counties), indicating high PAH loads caused by intensive urbanization effects. The high proportions of 3-ring PAHs in the wet season were from local sources via surface runoff; while the elevated proportions of 4- to 6- ring PAHs in the dry season reflected atmospheric deposition emerged of these PAHs and/or volatilization of 3-ring PAHs enhanced. Molecular diagnostic ratios of PAH isomers in multimedium and principal component analysis indicated that PAH presence in the SKR was mainly attributed to pyrogenic origin. The isomeric ratios of fluoranthene to fluoranthene plus pyrene in the wet season were homogeneous, implying that there were continuous new inputs along the riverine runoff. However, these ratios showed spatial downward trend in the dry season, indicating continued degradation of PAHs occurred along the transport path during the impoundment period. The input and output fluxes of PAHs in the SKR were 5330 kg yr⁻¹ and 2991 kg yr⁻¹, revealing that the reservoir retained contaminants after impoundment of the hydropower dam.

In the last decade many studies have described the ingestion of plastic in marine animals. While most studies were dedicated to understanding the pre-ingestion processes involving decision-making foraging choices based on visual and olfactory cues of animals, our knowledge in the post-ingestion consequences remains limited. Here we proposed a theoretical complementary view of post-ingestion consequences, attempting to connect plastic ingestion with plastic-induced satiety. We analyzed data of plastic ingestion and dietary information of 223 immature green turtles (Chelonia mydas) from tropical Brazilian reefs in order to understand the impacts of plastic ingestion on foraging behavior. Generalized linear mixing models and permutational analysis of variance suggested that plastic accumulations in esophagus, stomach and intestine differed in their impact on green turtle’s food intake. At the initial stages of plastic ingestion, where the plastic still in the stomach, an increase in food intake was observed. The accumulation of plastic in the gastrointestinal tract can reduce food intake likely leading to plastic-induced satiety. Our results also suggest that higher amounts of plastics in the gastrointestinal tract may led to underweight and emaciated turtles. We hope that adopting and refining our proposed framework will help to clarify the post-ingestion consequences of plastic ingestion in wildlife.

Doping of nitrogen and sulfur on biochar (NS-B) was investigated by a novel and improved method for diethyl phthalate (DEP) removal. The preparation parameters including pyrolysis temperature and size of peanut shell biochar as well as thiourea/biochar mass ratio were selected as independent variables at three levels by applying the Box-Behnken design. The ANOVA results indicated that thiourea/biochar mass ratio exhibited the most significant effect. The comprehensive effects of the three factors on DEP removal efficiency were further elaborated, combining with the characterization results of the obtained NS-B materials. The formation of the pyridinic N and oxidized S groups examined by XPS was responsible for enhancing the DEP removal efficiency. The adsorption kinetic model fitting illustrated that large micropores and numerous adsorption sites improved the adsorption capacity of NS-B. According to the adsorption isotherm model fitting, NS-B (temperature 375 °C, size 300 mesh and thiourea/biochar mass ratio 0.1) possessed much higher maximum adsorption capacity for DEP (14.34 mg g⁻¹) than biochar (6.57 mg g⁻¹). NS-B exhibited excellent reusability towards DEP removal after five times recycling. Moreover, NS-B also had the potential in peroxydisulfate activation. These findings provide new insights into the environmental implications of NS-B.

Cadmium (Cd)-polluted soils were collected from wasteland, farmland, and slopeland surrounding a lead–zinc mine in Yunnan Province, Southwest China. Maize plants (the host) were inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in a dual-compartment cultivation system that included mycorrhizal and hyphal compartments as part of an AMF inoculation treatment and root and soil compartments as part of a the non-inoculation treatment. The effects of AMF on maize biomass and Cd uptake, soil aggregate composition, and Cd concentration in the interflow within two soil layers (0–20 and 20–40 cm) as well as the Cd leaching from these three Cd-polluted soils under simulated heavy rainfall (40 and 80 mm/h) were investigated. The results demonstrated that AMF led to increased maize biomass and Cd uptake. There were greater contents of total glomalin-related soil protein (T-GRSP) and >2.0 mm aggregates and lower Cd concentrations in the interflow and lower dissolved Cd leaching in the mycorrhizal and hyphal compartments than in the soil compartment. A two-way analysis of variance revealed that AMF significantly increased the contents of T-GRSP and >2.0 mm aggregates and reduced both Cd concentrations in the interflow and dissolved Cd leaching. Moreover, AMF interacted extensively with the roots and affected soil aggregate composition and Cd concentrations in the interflow. Under 40 mm/h of rainfall, the contents of T-GRSP and >2.0 mm aggregates were significantly negatively correlated with both Cd concentrations in the interflow and dissolved Cd leaching. In addition, the Cd concentrations in the interflow were significantly positively correlated with the amount of dissolved Cd leaching. Therefore, both AMF-reduced Cd concentrations in the interflow and Cd leaching from Cd-polluted soils were closely related to increased T-GRSP contents and macroaggregate proportion in the soils.

The role of exposure time on wetland sediment-bound phosphorus (P) biogeochemical behavior is studied in Lake Poyang after the operation of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD). The multiple P compounds primarily include orth–P (88.3%), mono–P (8.9%), DNA–P (2.1%), and pyro–P (0.8%) in the exposed sediments. A significant decreasing trend of orth–P occurred after the operation of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD), with the mean concentration decreasing from 175.9 to 142.5 mg kg⁻¹ from 2007 to 2012 (ANOVA: P < 0.05), whereas the temporal change in biogenic P showed great variability. The plant distribution pattern and the increase in plant biomass due to decreased water levels might be the reason that caused variations in the P species. Furthermore, the content of orth–P, mono–P, DNA–P, and pyro–P showed increasing trends as sediment exposure time increased. However, the enzyme hydrolysis rate of DNA–P decreased with exposure time and may cause the bioavailability of biogenic P to decrease. Despite the fact that the bioavailability of biogenic P might decline in the short term, the favorable environmental conditions for P release in sediment rewetting processes, together with the increase in orth–P and biogenic P due to extended exposure time, indicate that these large additions of P would enter the overlying water and cause water quality decline once the sediment is submerged underwater during the next wet season. An environmental process analysis showed that the increased exposure time induced sediment environmental conditions changes that played an important role in the biogeochemical cycle of P and may be an important way of P replenishment in Lake Poyang. The results of this study help provide a better understanding of the role of sediment drying/wetting cycles in nutrient biogeochemical behavior and fates in wetland ecosystems.

The current study was conducted to (1) examine seasonal and spatial distribution of heavy metals and metalloid in sediment from the Saigon River and (2) apportion and quantify their pollution sources. Ninety-six sediment samples were taken in the rainy and dry season on 13 sampling sites, distributed over the lower reaches of the River, to analyze for exchangeable concentration of 11 heavy metals and metalloid (Al, B, Cd, Co, Fe, In, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, and Zn), pH, EC, organic carbon content, and particle-size distribution. Generally, the concentration of 11 elements was ranked in the order Mn > Al > Fe > Zn > Sr > In > B > Ni > Co > Pb > Cd. Hierarchical cluster analysis grouped 13 sampling sites into two parts based on the similar concentration of the 11 elements. Three-way analysis of variance showed that the total exchangeable concentration of 11 elements was significantly higher in the rainy season than in the dry season and in the upper part than in the lower part of the river. Principal component analysis/factor analysis and correlation analysis revealed that three pollution sources (PS) may contribute to enriching the 11 examined elements in the sediment. These sources included (PS1) from catchment through water erosion over natural areas, explaining 83%, (PS2) mixed sources from catchment through water erosion over agricultural fields and inside Ho Chi Minh City, accounting for 6%, and (PS3) mixed sources from lowland areas, explaining 7.8% of the total variance of the elements. In brief, the sediment concentration of 11 metals and metalloid varied with season and space and three major pollution sources from river catchment, inside Ho Chi Minh City, and lowland contributively enriched the elements in the sediment of the River.

Exposure to suboptimal ambient temperature during pregnancy has been reported as a potential teratogen of fetal development. However, limited animal evidence is available regarding the impact of extreme temperatures on maternal pregnancy and the subsequent adverse pregnancy outcomes. Our objective in this study is to investigate the relationship between temperature and maternal stress during pregnancy in mice. This study used the Naval Medical Research Institute (NMRI) mice during the second and third pregnant weeks with the gestational day (GD) (GD 6.5–14.5 and GD 14.5–17.5). Mice were exposed to suboptimal ambient temperature (1 °C, 5 °C, 10 °C, 15 °C, 40 °C, 42 °C, 44 °C, 46 °C, and 48 °C for the experimental group and 23 °C for the control group) 1 h per day, 7 days a weekin each trimester. Measurements of placental development (placental weight [PW] and placental diameter [PD]) and fetal growth (fetal weight [FW] and crown-to-rump length [CRL]) between experimental and control groups were compared using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Data on the occurrence of preterm birth (PTB) and abnormalities were also collected. The results showed that exposure to both cold and heat stress in the second and third weeks of pregnancy caused significant decreases in measurements of placental development (PW and PD) and fetal growth (FW and CRL). For all temperature exposures, 15 °C was identified as the optimal temperature in the development of the embryo. Most PTB occurrences were observed in high-temperature stress groups, with the highest PTB number seen in the exposure group at 48 °C, whereas PTB occurred only at 1 °C among cold stress groups. In the selected exposure experiments, an approximate U-shaped relation was observed between temperature and number of abnormality occurrence. The highest percentage of these anomalies occurred at temperatures of 1 °C and 48 °C, while no abnormalities were observed at 15 °C and in the control group. Our findings strengthened the evidence that exposure to suboptimal ambient temperatures may trigger adverse pregnancy outcomes and worsen embryo and fetal development in mice.

Fenton process was successfully applied to degrade three reactive dyes, blue 19 (RB19), red 195 (RR195), and yellow 145 (RY145), a mixture of dyes and a real textile effluent. A 2³ full factorial design coupled with a response surface methodology (RSM) was conducted to evaluate the effects of H₂O₂, Fe²⁺, and dye concentration on the Fenton reaction measured by absorbance reduction (AR) as response. Considering the analysis of variance (ANOVA), the statistical models could be used to describe experimental results and to predict the process behavior. The results obtained by RSM indicated that the optimum conditions for Fenton were [H₂O₂] = 50 mg L⁻¹, [Fe²⁺] = 0.5 mmol L⁻¹, and dye concentration = 0.075 g L⁻¹, obtaining up to 90% of AR. From kinetic study, the absorbance reduction for RY145 followed a second-order model, while RB19 and RR195 followed a first-order model. The mixture of dyes and the real textile effluent obtained lower AR, 56% and 22%, respectively. The phytotoxicity tests indicate that the Fenton reactions were very effective to reduce the toxicity of almost all contaminated solutions; however, for more complex solution (mixture of dyes and real effluents), a longer reactional time is necessary. Therefore, the results pointed that the Fenton reaction is very efficient in solution discoloration.

Disadvantages associated with chemical coagulants and goal of sustainable development have shifted the focus to natural plant-based coagulants. Raw and defatted soybean (Glycine max L.) seed powder, as innovative and eco-friendly coagulant, was appraised in detail for turbid water treatment and compared with alum in this study. Design of experiments was conducted by employing response surface method which lacks in past studies pertaining to plant-based coagulants. Experiments were conducted with lab prepared turbid water with initial turbidity of 200 NTU and wide range of pH (2–10) and dose (20–100 mg/L). Results revealed that raw and defatted soybean gave residual turbidities of 4 and 3 NTU at optimum conditions which were comparable to alum. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) identified that pH was more significant parameter as compared with dose for soybean and alum, while interaction of pH and dose was most significant in case of defatted soybean. Characterization of the coagulants and flocs, by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope (SEM), revealed that postulated mechanism of coagulation for plant-based coagulants is adsorption and charge neutralization. Cost of treating 1000 m³ of water by raw and defatted soybean is lower (US$12 and US$3.9 respectively) compared with alum (US$31.2).

Disposal of industrial effluents (especially the textile industry) into the drains without prior treatment is a common practice that affects aquatic life and pollutes the soil and groundwater quality. Textile effluents contain organic and inorganic pollutants in terms of high pH, suspended and dissolved solids, chemical oxygen demand, heavy metals, and many other contaminants. Therefore, it is obligatory to dispose off wastewater according to environmental standards. The present study is planned to determine textile wastewater characteristics and recommend efficient and economical treatment options. Wastewater samples from three different industries were collected and analyzed. Nine different treatments using different dosages of alum, activated carbon, and their mixture were used to investigate treatment performance. Analysis of variance and correlation was used to optimize the results. A highly significant correlation was found among the treatments ranging from 92 to 100% for observed parameters. pH, chemical oxygen demand, and total suspended solids were removed significantly. A combination of alum and activated carbon found to be the most efficient treatment. Based on the highly significant results among different parameters, a combined wastewater treatment plant is recommended for a cluster of industrial units.
