Heavy metals that enter marine environment and remain in the water as well as the sediments are accumulated by aquatic organisms, thus becoming highly good indicators to monitor metal accumulation in the long run. Metals are potentially harmful to humans and most organisms at varied levels of exposure and absorption. Northern East Mediterranean Sea is a crucial region as it is an area, shared by numerous aquatic species with pollutant factors such as heavy marine traffic, transportation ports, industry plants, iron and steel works, oil pipeline installation, and other small factories. While the previous part of this review (Review of heavy metal accumulation on aquatic environment in Northern East Mediterranean Sea part I: some essential metals) evaluated the data from previous studies concerning toxic effects of selected essential metals on seawater, sediment, and different tissues of aquatic animals, collected from different areas in Northern East Mediterrenean Sea since the 1990s, the present part intends to evaluate the data from previous studies on toxic effects of selected non-essential metals. For this purpose, 94 articles and 6 theses have been examined and a good deal of information has been gathered to open a forward-looking view of the studied area’s pollution. Althought there has not been any harmonization, when comparing heavy metals investigations in the bay, all studies have shown that consumption of aquatic species from the region causes no problem to human health.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic ushered in a new era that led to the adjustments of diverse ecosystems. The pandemic restructured the global socio-economic events which prompted several adaptation measures as a response mechanism to cushion the negative impact of the disease pandemic. Critical health safety actions were imperative to curtail the spread of the disease such as wearing personal protective equipment (PPEs), masks, goggles, and using sanitizers for disinfection purposes. The daily demands for the products by individuals and medical personnel heightened their production and consumption, leading to a corresponding increase of COVID-19 wastes in the environment following indiscriminate waste disposal and poor waste management. The persistent occurrence of COVID-19 wastes aggravated microplastics (MPs) contamination in the aquatic ecosystem following the breakdown of PPEs-based plastics via oxidation, fragmentation, and photo-degradation actions. These MPs are transported in the aquatic environment via surface runoff and wind action, apart from discrete sources. MPs' presence in the aquatic systems is not without repercussions. Ingestion of MPs by aquatic organisms can cause several diseases (e.g., poor growth, oxidative distress, neurotoxicity, developmental toxicity, reproductive toxicity, immunotoxicity, and organ toxicity). Humans are at high risk of MPs uptake. Apart from aerial and soil contamination sources, consumption of aquatic food products is a critical pathway of MPs into the human body. MP toxicities in humans include liver disorder, respiratory failure, infertility, hormonal imbalance, diarrhea, developmental disorder, and mortality. Measures to alleviate the effect of COVID-19 waste litters include effective waste management plans and the adoption of technologies to extract cum degrade MPs from the aquatic and terrestrial environment.

Contamination of urban surface waters by herbicides is an increasing concern; however, sources of contamination are poorly understood, hindering the development of mitigation and regulatory strategies. Impervious surfaces, such as concrete in driveways and paths are considered an important facilitator for herbicide runoff to urban surface waters following applications by residential homeowners. This study assessed the transferability of a herbicide from concrete pavers treated with an off-the-shelf product, containing simazine as the active herbicide, marketed for residential homeowner application to impervious surfaces. Commercially available pavers were treated according to label directions and the effects of exposure time prior to irrigation, repeated irrigations, and dry time between irrigations on transferability of simazine to runoff were assessed. Simazine transferability was greatest when receiving an initial irrigation 1 h after application, with concentrations in runoff reduced by half when exposure times prior to the first irrigation were >2 days. Concentrations remained stable for repeated irrigations up to 320 days and exposures to outdoor conditions of 180 days prior to a first irrigation. Dry time between irrigations significantly influenced simazine transfer to runoff. Dry periods of 140 days resulted in approximately a 4-times increase in simazine transferability to runoff. These results suggest that herbicides used by homeowners, or any other users, on impervious surfaces are available to contaminate runoff for prolonged time periods following application at concentrations that may pose risks to aquatic life and for reuse of harvested runoff on parks and gardens. Regulators should consider the potential of hard surfaces to act as reservoirs for herbicides when developing policies and labelling products.

Several studies highlighted the ubiquitous presence of ibuprofen and aluminum in the aquatic environment around the world and demonstrated their potential to induce embryotoxic and teratogenic defects on aquatic species individually. Although studies that evaluate developmental alterations induced by mixtures of these pollutants are scarce; and, since environmental contamination presented in the form of a mixture of toxicants with different chemical properties and toxicity mechanisms capable of generating interactions; the objective of this study was to evaluate the developmental defects, teratogenic alterations, and oxidative stress induced by individual forms and the mixture of ibuprofen (IBU) and aluminum (Al) on zebrafish embryos. Oocytes exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of IBU (0.1–20 μg L-1) and Al (0.01–8 mg L-1) and one binary mixture. The LC50 and EC50 were obtained to calculate the teratogenic index (TI). The IBU LC50, EC50, and TI were 8.06 μg L-1, 2.85 μg L-1 and 2.82. In contrast, Al LC50 was 5.0 mg L-1with an EC50 of 3.58 mg L-1 and TI of 1.39. The main alterations observed for individual compounds were hatching alterations, head malformation, skeletal deformities, hypopigmentation, pericardial edema, and heart rate impairment. The mixture also showed significant delays to embryonic development. Moreover, oxidative stress biomarkers of cellular oxidation and antioxidant defenses at 72 and 96 hpf significantly increased. Results show that environmentally relevant concentrations of ibuprofen (IBU), aluminum (Al), and their mixture promote a series of developmental defects, teratogenic effects, and oxidative disruption on D. rerio embryos, and the interaction of both substances altered the response. In conclusion, morphological and biochemical tests are suitable tools for assessing the health risk of aquatic wildlife by exposure to individual and mixed pollutants in freshwater bodies.

Imidacloprid (IMI) is widely used in agriculture, and is toxic to non-target aquatic species. Quercetin (Que) is a flavonoid abundant in fruits and vegetables that exhibits anti-oxidant activity. In the present study, we treated grass carp hepatocytes (L8824) with 0.1 μM Que and/or 1 mM IMI for 24 h to explore the effect of Que on IMI-induced mitochondrial apoptosis. We found that IMI exposure enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, inhibiting the activities of SOD, CAT and T-AOC, exacerbating the accumulation of MDA, aggravating the expression of mitochondrial apoptosis pathway (Cyt-C, BAX, Caspase9 and Caspase3) related genes and decreased the expression of anti-apoptosis gene B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2). In addition, Que and IMI co-treatment significantly restored the activity of anti-oxidant enzymes, downregulated ROS level and apoptosis rate, thereby alleviating the depletion of mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) and the expression of cytochrome c (Cyt-C), Bcl-2-associated X (BAX), and cysteinyl aspartate specific proteinases (Caspase9 and 3), increasing the Bcl-2 level. Furthermore, we elucidated that Que could inhibit the expression of phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN), thus activating phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/AKT) pathway to attenuate IMI-induced apoptosis. Molecular docking provides assertive evidence for the interaction between Que ligand and PTEN receptor. Consequently, these results indicate that Que effectively antagonizes IMI-induced mitochondrial apoptosis in grass carp hepatocytes via regulating the PTEN/PI3K/AKT pathway.

Organic chemical pollutants associated with microplastic (MP) may represent an alternative exposure route for these chemicals to marine biota. However, the bioavailability of MP-sorbed organic pollutants under conditions where co-exposure occurs from the same compounds dissolved in the water phase has rarely been studied experimentally, especially where pollutant concentrations in the two phases are well characterized. Importantly, higher concentrations of organic pollutants on ingested MP may be less bioavailable to aquatic organisms than the same chemicals present in dissolved form in the surrounding water. In the current study, the sorption kinetics of two model polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; fluoranthene and phenanthrene) to MP particles in natural seawater at 10 and 20 °C were studied and the bioavailability of MP-sorbed PAHs to marine copepods investigated. Polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS) microbeads with mean diameters ranging from 10 to 200 μm were used to identify the role of MP polymer type and size on sorption mechanisms. Additionally, temperature dependence of sorption was investigated. Results indicated that adsorption dominated at lower temperatures and for smaller MP (10 μm), while absorption was the prevailing process for larger MP (100 μm). Monolayer sorption dominated at lower PAH concentrations, while multilayer sorption dominated at higher concentrations. PE particles representing ingestible (10 μm) and non-ingestible (100 μm) MP for the marine copepod species Acartia tonsa and Calanus finmarchicus were used to investigate the availability and toxicity of MP-sorbed PAHs. Studies were conducted under co-exposure conditions where the PAHs were also present in the dissolved phase (Cfᵣₑₑ), thereby representing more environmentally relevant exposure scenarios. Cfᵣₑₑ reduction through MP sorption was reflected in a corresponding reduction of lethality and bioaccumulation, with no difference observed between ingestible and non-ingestible MP. This indicates that only free dissolved PAHs are significantly bioavailable to copepods under co-exposure conditions with MP-sorbed PAHs.

Thifluzamide is widely used in treatment of rice diseases and has potential toxicity on aquatic organism. Although previous studies have focused on the toxic effect of thifluzamide in zebrafish, no consistent conclusions have been reached. To help to elucidate the toxic mechanism, qualities of liver and mitochondria were evaluated. The global changes in the transcriptome of zebrafish after exposure to thifluzamide were measured. Based on this, the expression and activities of chitinase and succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) were further assayed. And the targeted site of thifluzamide in zebrafish was confirmed by dock study and co-exposure study. Here we report that developmental inhibition was observed along with presence of liver and mitochondrial damage. The expression of SDHa-d and genes related to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) replicate and mitochondrial complexes were significantly altered. And, as the top differentially expressed genes, the expression of chia.1-6 did show apparent changes, but differences of chitinase activity between exposure groups and the controls did not reach significance. In line with that, dock study showed that the binding potentials of thifluzamide toward zebrafish chitinase and SDH exhibited in the following order: SDH> chitinase. And sdhb-sdhc-sdhd (Qp site) showed the highest binding activity toward thifluzamide. The joint exposure (thifluzamide + Q10) significantly improved the survival of zebrafish compared with single thifluzamide exposure. These results indicate that SDH, especially Qp-site, may be the target of thifluzamide in zebrafish and inhibition of SDH activity may be at least in partial responsible for the toxicity of thifluzamide in zebrafish. In addition, the antagonistic effect of Q10 on thifluzamide toxicity in zebrafish suggests that Q10 may be a useful adjunct to detoxification.

The exposure risk of metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) to marine organisms and related food safety have attracted increasing attention, but the actual concentrations of these NPs in seawater and marine organisms are unknown. In this work, single particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (spICP-MS) was used to quantify the concentrations and size distributions of NPs in different marine mollusks (oysters, mussels, scallops, clams, and ark shells) from an offshore aquaculture farm. Results showed that Ti, Cu, Zn, and Ag bearing NPs were detected in all the five mollusks with the mean sizes at 65.4–70.9, 72.2–89.6, 97.8–108.3, and 42.9–51.0 nm, respectively. The particle concentrations of Ti, Cu, Zn, and Ag bearing NPs in all mollusks (0.88–3.26 × 10⁷ particles/g fresh weight) were much higher than that in the seawater (0.46–0.79 × 10⁷ particles/mL), suggesting bio-accumulation of NPs. For all the five mollusks, Ag bearing NPs had the highest number-based bioconcentration factors (NBCFs) in all the tested NPs due to the smallest mean size of Ag bearing NPs in seawater (30.5 nm). In addition, the clams exhibited the lowest NBCFs of the four NPs than other mollusks. All four NPs were mainly accumulated in the gill and digestive gland, and could transfer to adductor muscle of all mollusks. Although all the four metals (Ti, Cu, Zn, Ag) in mollusks were safe for human consumption by the estimated daily intake (EDI) analysis, the risk of NPs remaining in the mollusks should be further considered when evaluating the toxicity of metals for human health. The findings could improve our understanding on the distribution and health risk of NPs in marine mollusks under offshore aquaculture.

The Paraná River basin is one of the most important in South America and is affected by human activities that take place on its margins. In particular, the De la Cruz stream flows through an industrial pole and the Arrecifes River goes mainly through agricultural fields. The aim of this study was to evaluate the water quality of the De la Cruz stream (S1) and the Arrecifes River (S2) by means of physicochemical parameters, including metals and pesticides concentrations. Since amphibians are good indicators of environmental quality, bioassays with Rhinella arenarum were carried on. For lethal and sublethal parameters, embryos and larvae were exposed to a dilution gradient of water samples and AMPHITOX Solution (AS) as negative control for 504 h. For the determination of oxidative stress biomarkers (Catalase -CAT-, Glutathione S-Transferase -GST-, Reduced Glutathione -GSH-, and lipid peroxidation -TBARS-), embryos and larvae were exposed to undiluted water samples and AS. For the determination of micronuclei, larvae at hind limb bud stage (S.28) were exposed to undiluted water samples, simultaneously with negative and positive controls (AS and cyclophosphamide 40 mg/L, respectively). Dissolved oxygen was low in both sites and the copper levels exceeded the Argentine limit for the protection of aquatic life. In embryos exposure, water sample from S1 caused lethal effects (504h-LC50 = 49 (28–71.6)%), increased TBARS levels, and GST and CAT activities. In larvae exposure, water sample from this site decreased CAT activity, while the water sample from S2 caused important lethal effects (504h-LC50 = 98.72 (60.60–302.52)%), low GSH levels and increased GST activity. Water samples from both sites induced higher micronuclei frequency than the negative control. This study alerts about the degradation of water quality of the studied sites including lethal and sublethal effects in R. arenarum that can jeopardize the native populations of this species.

Effects of contamination on aquatic organisms have been investigated and employed as biomarkers in environmental quality assessment for years. A commonly referenced aquatic organism, mollusks represent a group of major interest in toxicological studies. Both gastropods and bivalves have external mineral shells that protects their soft tissue from predation and desiccation. These structures are composed of an organic matrix and an inorganic matrix, both of which are affected by environmental changes, including exposure to hazardous chemicals. This literature review evaluates studies that propose mollusk shell alterations as biomarkers of aquatic system quality. The studies included herein show that changes to natural variables such as salinity, temperature, food availability, hydrodynamics, desiccation, predatory pressure, and substrate type may influence the form, structure, and composition of mollusk shells. However, in the spatial and temporal studies performed in coastal waters around the world, shells of organisms sampled from multi-impacted areas were found to differ in the form and composition of both organic and inorganic matrices relative to shells from less contaminated areas. Though these findings are useful, the toxicological studies were often performed in the field and were not able to attribute shell alterations to a specific molecule. It is known that the organic matrix of shells regulates the biomineralization process; proteomic analyses of shells may therefore elucidate how different contaminants affect shell biomineralization. Further research using approaches that allow a clearer distinction between shell alterations caused by natural variations and those caused by anthropogenic influence, as well as studies to identify which molecule is responsible for such alterations or to determine the ecological implications of shell alterations, are needed before any responses can be applied universally.
