Lanthanum (La) modified bentonite (LMB) is one of the available mitigating agents used for the reduction of the phosphorus (P) recycling in eutrophic lakes. The potential toxicity of the La from LMB to aquatic organisms is a matter of concern. In this study the accumulation of La was investigated in the macrophyte Elodea nuttallii, in chironomid larvae and in several fish species during periods up to five years following in situ LMB applications. The application of LMB increased the La concentration of exposed plants and animals. During the first growing season following LMB applications, the La content of E. nuttallii increased 78 fold (3.98–310.68 μg La. g−1 DW) to 127 fold (2.46–311.44 μg La. g−1). During the second growing season following application, the La content decreased but was still raised compared to plants that had not been exposed. The La content of chironomids was doubled in the two years following LMB application, although the increase was not significant. Raised La concentrations in fish liver, bone, muscle and skin were observed two and five years following to LMB application. Liver tissues showed the highest La increase, ranging from 6 fold (0.046–0.285 μg La. g−1 DW) to ∼20 fold (0.080–1.886 μg La. g−1, and 0.122–2.109 μg La. g−1) two years following application and from 6 fold (0.046–0.262 μg La. g−1) to 13 fold (0.013–0.167 μg La. g−1) after five years in pelagic and littoral fish. The La content of the liver from Anguilla anguilla (eel) had increased 94 fold (0.034–3.176 μg La. g−1) two years and 133 fold (0.034–4.538 μg La. g−1) five years following LMB application. No acute and chronic effects of La accumulation were observed and human health risks are considered negligible. We advocate the long-term study of effects of La accumulation following future LMB applications.

Clay minerals are the most popular adsorbents/amendments for immobilizing heavy metals in contaminated soils, but the dissolved organic matter (DOM) in soil environment would potentially affect the adsorption/immobilization capacity of clay minerals for heavy metals. In this study, the effects of DOM derived from chicken manure (CM) on the adsorption of cadmium (Cd2+) on two clay minerals, bentonite and zeolite, were investigated. The equilibrium data for Cd2+ sorption in the absence or presence of CM-DOM could be well-fitted to the Langmuir equation (R2 > 0.97). The presence of CM-DOM in the aqueous solution was found to greatly reduce the adsorption capacity of both minerals for Cd2+, in particular zeolite, and the percentage decreases for Cd2+ sorption increased with increasing concentrations of Cd2+ as well as CM-DOM in aqueous solutions. The adsorption of CM-DOM on zeolite was greater than that on bentonite in the absence of Cd2+, however, a sharp increase was observed for CM-DOM sorption on bentonite with increasing Cd2+ concentrations but little change for that on zeolite, which can be attributed to the different ternary structures on mineral surface. The CM-DOM modified clay minerals were utilized to investigate the effect of mineral-adsorbed CM-DOM on Cd2+ sorption. The adsorbed form was found to inhibit Cd2+ sorption, and further calculation suggested it primarily responsible for the overall decrease in Cd2+ sorption on clay minerals in the presence of CM-DOM in aqueous solutions. An investigation for the mineral surface morphology suggested that the mineral-adsorbed CM-DOM decreased Cd2+ sorption on bentonite mainly through barrier effect, while in the case of zeolite, it was the combination of active sites occupation and barrier effect. These results can serve as a guide for evaluating the performance of clay minerals in immobilizing heavy metals when animal manure is present in contaminated soils.

Riverine transport to the marine environment is an important pathway for microplastic. However, information on fate and transport of nano- and microplastic in freshwater systems is lacking. Here we present scenario studies on the fate and transport of nano-to millimetre sized spherical particles like microbeads (100 nm–10 mm) with a state of the art spatiotemporally resolved hydrological model. The model accounts for advective transport, homo- and heteroaggregation, sedimentation-resuspension, polymer degradation, presence of biofilm and burial. Literature data were used to parameterize the model and additionally the attachment efficiency for heteroaggregation was determined experimentally. The attachment efficiency ranged from 0.004 to 0.2 for 70 nm and 1050 nm polystyrene particles aggregating with kaolin or bentonite clays in natural freshwater. Modeled effects of polymer density (1–1.5 kg/L) and biofilm formation were not large, due to the fact that variations in polymer density are largely overwhelmed by excess mass of suspended solids that form heteroaggregates with microplastic. Particle size had a dramatic effect on the modeled fate and retention of microplastic and on the positioning of the accumulation hot spots in the sediment along the river. Remarkably, retention was lowest (18–25%) for intermediate sized particles of about 5 μm, which implies that the smaller submicron particles as well as larger micro- and millimetre sized plastic are preferentially retained. Our results suggest that river hydrodynamics affect microplastic size distributions with profound implications for emissions to marine systems.

The contamination of drinking water with arsenic has been a problem in a lot of countries around the world because of its toxicological and carcinogenic effects on human health. Porous materials modified with Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄ NPs) represent convenient removers for that contaminant. A co-precipitation method of Fe(III) and Fe(II) in alkaline media was applied to obtain Fe₃O₄ NPs. In a first stage, single nanoparticles were synthesized and stabilized with carboxylic acids. A characterization with attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirms a magnetite-type structure. Moreover, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and calculations from XRD data using Scherrer’s equation indicate an average particle size of 13 nm and an average crystallite size of 10 nm, both independent of the stabilizer used. Then, the co-precipitation method studied was applied to modify kaolin, bentonite, diatomite, and silica and thus prepare magnetic composites having support-magnetite weight ratios of 2:1. Among them, silica-modified material presented the best hydraulic characteristics, an important aspect for large-scale applications such as removal under gravity. This composite has the capacity to remove up to 80 and 70% for initial concentrations of 25 and 50 μg/L, respectively, representing a convenient remover for processes developed in subsequent stages or in continuous flow.

Solidification is a very effective way to alleviate heavy metal impacts to the environment. In this paper, an improved method was adopted herein for the solidification/stabilization (S/S) of sediments with cement-based additives and low content of cement in S/S materials. Sediments in Xiangjiang River, containing high concentrations of Cu, Cd, and Pb, were solidified/stabilized by binders of cement, fly ash, and bentonite. Admixtures such as sodium lignosulfonate, sodium lauryl sulfate, and triethanolamine were used to improve the bonding properties of S/S, which had never been investigated before. Results demonstrated that the addition of concrete admixtures had significant effects on the S/S of sediments. Sequential extraction method indicates that the concentrations of heavy metals changed significantly after solidification and were more stable over time, with the exception of Pb. In addition, SEM images indicated that the main hydrated product was ettringite. Large quantities of calcium silicate hydrates (CSH) formed and filled the solidified sediment in 60 days. The results provide further insights into the transformation of heavy metals during S/S.

The decline of cadmium pollution in fish farms is needed by any adequate method. The present study was designed to explore the effect of dietary cadmium contamination and its amelioration by using dietary clay, probiotic (Bactocell®), vitamin C, and vitamin E supplementation in Nile tilapia fish diet on growth rate, feed efficiency, blood components, and cadmium residues. Fish were separated into 15 groups, each group of fish was stocked into three aquaria and each contains 20 fishes. The fish of the first five groups were fed the basal diet, the second five groups were fed the basal diet contaminated with 25 mg cadmium/kg, and the third five groups were fed the same diet contaminated with 50 mg cadmium/kg. Within each dietary cadmium level, the first group was fed the diet without any supplementation, the second was fed the diet supplemented with natural clay (bentonite) at level 3%, the third group was fed the diet supplemented with 1 g Bactocell®/kg, the fourth group was fed the diet supplemented 50 mg vitamin E/kg, and the fifth group was fed the diet supplemented with 100 mg vitamin C/kg. Live body weight, daily body weight gain, and feed intake of Nile tilapia decreased significantly (P < 0.001) with increasing dietary cadmium level, while feed conversion was impaired. Fish group fed on diets contaminated with 50 mg cadmium/kg recorded the lowest live body weight and weight gain. Serum total protein and albumin concentration significantly (P < 0.001) decreased, while serum creatinine, AST, and ALT significantly (P < 0.001) increased with increasing cadmium level in fish diets. Blood hemoglobin and total erythrocyte (RBCs) significantly (P < 0.001 or 0.05) decreased with cadmium contamination in fish diets, while leukocytes were insignificantly affected. Body cadmium residues increased significantly (P < 0.001) by increasing cadmium level in fish diets. Live body weight, daily body weight gain, and feed intake of Nile tilapia increased significantly (P < 0.001) with feed additive supplementation in diets, also while feed conversion improved. Fish group fed on diets supplemented with probiotic Bactocell® or natural clay recorded higher body weight and gain rate than the other experimental groups. Serum total protein, blood hemoglobin, and total erythrocyte increased, while urea-N, creatinine, ALT, AST, and leukocytes decreased as affected with the feed additive supplementation. Feed additive supplementation in fish diets significantly (P < 0.001) decreased cadmium residues in fish bodies. Irrespective of dietary cadmium level, feed additive supplementation in fish diet improved the growth rate and decreased the concentrations of serum creatinine and ALT. The obtained results indicated that feed additive supplementation could modify the function of the kidney and liver in fish exposed to the cadmium toxicity.

Anthropogenic activities have increased the concentration of metal species in the environment. The toxicity of silver ions to aquatic and terrestrial organisms has required monitoring by analytical methods, besides actions to promote its control as pollutant. Sorption and desorption processes are directly related to the mobility and availability of metal ions in the environment. In this context, clay minerals can be used for pre-concentration, removal and recovery of silver ions from aqueous solution. Herein, two bentonite clays (BaVC-1 and SWy-2) were characterised and applied to investigate the sorption and desorption of silver ions. Isotherms were fitted to the dual-mode Langmuir-Freundlich model to qualify and quantify sorption sites and evaluate the mobilisation process. The maximum sorption capacity was 743 and 849 meq kg⁻¹ for BaVC-1 and SWy-2, respectively. Hysteresis index (HI) and mobilisation factor (MF) suggest that the desorption of silver ions in BaVC-1 is about four times more conducive compared to that in SWy-2, although both materials have demonstrated a great potential for Ag⁺ pre-concentration from aqueous solutions.

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of supplemental bentonite on performance, blood, and fermentation characteristics in Zandi lambs. In experiment 1, 20 Zandi male lambs (initial BW, 17.5 ± 1.6 kg and 110 ± 5 days old) were randomly assigned into four groups of five animals in each. The experimental treatments were (1) control (no Pb and bentonite), (2) 15 mg/kg DM Pb as Pb acetate and no bentonite, (3) 15 mg/kg DM Pb as Pb acetate and 1.5% bentonite, and (4) 15 mg/kg DM Pb as Pb acetate and 3% bentonite. The dietary treatments had no significant effect on dry matter intake of experimental lambs. Feed required per unit of weight gain was more (P < 0.05) in lead-exposed lambs in group 2 compared to the control and bentonite supplemented groups. Serum glucose, urea nitrogen, cholesterol, HDL, and LDL concentrations was similar among the treatments. In experiment 2, an in vitro gas production technique was used to evaluate the effects of bentonite supplementation on the gas production parameters of lead-polluted diets. The rate and amount of gas production was higher for bentonite supplemented groups (P < 0.01). Asymptotic gas production (b), metabolizable energy, and concentration of short chain fatty acids were lower (P < 0.05) for lead-polluted non-supplemented diet (group 2) as compared to the bentonite supplemented and control groups. It was concluded that bentonite supplementation favorably modified ruminal fermentation pattern and improved feed conversion ratio in growing lead-exposed lambs.

In central Tunisia, many upper Eocene outcrops supply smectitic claystone which are characterized by several analytical techniques (calcimetry, XRD, SediGraph, chemical analysis, surface area, etc.). Beidellite is the main mineral detected by the XRD method. Representative raw samples M1, taken from Henchir Souar (Zaghouan, Tunisia), were acid activated in order to improve their physicochemical properties. This study consists in optimizing the activation conditions with HCl 3 N by varying the following parameters: time (2, 4, and 6 h) and temperature (25, 50, 75, and 90 °C). The characterization by XRD and chemical analysis was carried out on the samples (M1, activated for 2 and 6 h at 75 °C), showing a structural modification of the clay by reduction of intensity reflection 001 order of smectite and dissolution of metal ions (Al³⁺, Fe³⁺, and Mg²⁺) from clay structure. Optimum condition for soybean oil clarification is obtained using a variety of amount raw clays (0.5, 0.75, and 1%). Thus, the best clarification yield is given at 0.75% of clay, showing a capacity of about 55%. Various forms of activated materials were used with a 75% proportion to leach soybean oil. Results were compared with commercial bentonite (Tonsil) having surface area (378 m²/g). The activated sample M1 during 4 h at 75 °C possesses a decolorizing capacity of about 85% greater than the oil treated by Tonsil in laboratory (58%).

In this study, greenhouse pot experiment was carried out to investigate the Cu and Zn mobility and their accumulations in pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.) and Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapachinensis L.) growth in Ca-bentonite-pig manure co-compost (CBC)–soil system during three consecutive planting. Five composts (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10% Ca-bentonite-pig manure co-composts) amended soil with 5% (w/w) application rate and compared to control without any additive. The results showed that the addition of CBC increased the biomass and chlorophyll content of pakchoi, and the maximum overall yield was found in 7.5% CBC treatment (12.89 ± 0.25 g), while when compared with the 0% CBC (15.89 ± 0.52 g) treatment, the Ca-bentonite amendment slightly decreased the Chinese cabbage yield (14.65 ± 0.11–15.41 ± 1.97 g). Additionally, compared to the 0% CBC treatment (11.81 ± 0.57–25.75 ± 0.89 mg/kg), the Ca-bentonite amendments showed a positive effect on restraining the diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid Zn mobilization (4.43 ± 0.41–12.48 ± 2.54 mg/kg) in pakchoi and Chinese cabbage; beside this, no obvious effect was observed on DTPA-Cu. Furthermore, there were great potential impacts for plant-available Zn in Ca-bentonite amended treatments during the consecutive planting, which decreased the content of Zn in plants. DTPA extraction results showed significantly higher Cu and Zn contents in compost–soil mixture, but its availability for grown plant was not confirmed during the consecutive planting, because of the consecutive decrease heavy metals contents in crops. Overall, the Ca-bentonite could be a useful additive for restricting the heavy metal mobility and increase the pakchoi yield.
