Biodigested coffee processing wastewater (CPW) presents a high organic load and does not meet the limits imposed by legislation (namely in Brazil) for discharge into water bodies. Anaerobic digestion generally cannot provide a satisfactory organic matter reduction in CPW as a significant fraction of recalcitrant compounds still persists in the treated effluent. So, this study aims to find alternative ways to remove refractory organic compounds from this wastewater in order to improve the biodegradability and reduce the toxicity, which will allow its recirculation back into the anaerobic digester. Three treatment approaches (Fenton’s oxidation - Approach 1, Coagulation/flocculation (C/F) - Approach 2, and the combination of C/F with Fenton’s process - Approach 3) were selected to be applied to the biodigested CPW in order to achieve that objective.The application of the Fenton process under the optimal operating conditions (initial pH = 5.0; T = 55 °C, [Fe³⁺] = 1.8 g L⁻¹ and [H₂O₂] = 9.0 g L⁻¹) increased the biodegradability (the BOD₅:COD ratio raised from 0.34 ± 0.02 in biodigested CPW to 0.44 ± 0.01 after treatment) and eliminated the toxicity (0.0% of Vibrio fischeri inhibition) along with moderate removals of organic matter (51.3%, 55.7% and 39.7% for total organic carbon – TOC, chemical oxygen demand – COD and biochemical oxygen demand - BOD₅, respectively). The implementation of a coagulation/flocculation process upstream from Fenton’s oxidation, under the best operating conditions (pH 10–11 and [Fe³⁺] = 250 mg L⁻¹), also allowed to slightly increase the biodegradability (from 0.34 to 0.47) and reduce the toxicity, whereas providing a higher removal of organic matter (TOC = 76.2%, COD = 76.5 and BOD₅ = 66.3% for both processes together). Approach 1 and Approach 3 showed to be the best ones, implying similar operating costs (∼74 R$ m⁻³/∼17 € m⁻³) and constitute an attractive option for managing biodigested CPW.

This study developed a process of genetically engineered bacteria Rhodococcus erythropolis expressing Nirs and AMO combined with membrane bioreactor (MBR), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane (pRho-NA-MNR) for advanced treatment of landfill leachate. Results demonstrated that pRho-NA-MNR presented higher removal rate of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), ammonia nitrogen (N–NH₄), total nitrogen (TN) and total organic carbon (TOC) than activated sludge (AS-MNR) system. Administration of pRho-NA increased nitrification by converting N–NH₄ to nitrite (N–NO₂) and Nitrate (N–NO₃), and promoting denitrification by converting N–NO₂ to nitrogen (N₂) in the landfill leachate treatment, promoted the pH control, increased sludge activity and effluent yield, shortened phase length adaptation under alternating aerobic-anoxic conditions. pRho-NA increased the nitration and denitrifying rate in the aerobic and anaerobic stage in the system by increasing Cyt cd1 and Cyt c expression in the activated sludge. Nitrogen removal by nitrification and denitrification was positively correlated to the concentration of Nirs and AMO expression. Treatment with pRho-NA promoted pollutant removal efficiency of membrane bioreactor, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membrane processes in landfill leachate. In conclusion, data suggest that pRho-NA-MNR facilitates the formation of granular sludge and enhances comparable removal of nitrogen and organic compounds, indicating the practice of this process should be considered in landfill leachate treatment system.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play important roles in water purification but are also important source of aerosols. However, the relationship between aerosol characteristics and wastewater treatment process remains poorly understood. In this study, aerosols were collected over a 24-month period from a WWTP using a modified anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process. The aerated tank (AerT) was characterized by the highest respiratory fraction (RF) concentrations (861–1525 CFU/m³) and proportions (50.76%–65.96%) of aerosol particles. Fourteen core potential pathogens and 15 toxic metal(loid)s were identified in aerosols. Mycobacterium was the genus that aerosolized most easily in fine grid, pre-anoxic tank, and AerT. High wastewater treatment efficiency may increase the emission of RF and core potential pathogens. The median size of activated sludge, richness of core potential pathogens in wastewater, and total suspended particulates were the most influential factors directly related to the RF proportions, core community of potential pathogens, and composition of toxic metal(loid)s in WWTP aerosols, respectively. Relative humidity, temperature, input and removal of biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, and mixed liquor suspended solids could also directly or indirectly affect the aerosol characteristics. This study enhances the mechanistic understanding of linking aerosol characteristics to treatment processes and has important implications for targeted manipulation.

Long-term effects of environmental factors on phytoplankton community in Deep Bay, Hong Kong, were investigated from 1994 to 2016. Phytoplankton community experienced three important shifts: small flagellates and Chroomonas spp. dominated from 1994 to 2006. Heavy blooms of diatoms Skeletonema costatum and Thalassiosira spp. occurred and became the dominant species between 2007 and 2009. Phytoplankton community was dominated by small flagellates and Chroomonas spp. from 2010 to 2015, and their abundance was much higher than earlier periods. Abundance of Chroomonas spp. decreased sharply in 2016, and Thalassiosira spp. became the dominant species. Phytoplankton community changed from consisting mainly of small flagellates and Chroomonas spp. to more diatoms, changing from ~90% to ~45% for other species abundance and from <10% to ~55% for diatoms. Nitrite, 5-day biochemical oxygen demand, salinity, suspended solids and turbidity were more influential on phytoplankton variation (23.65% explained by all the variables).

Nepal’s efforts to reduce manufacturing-related water pollution have faltered because they rely on traditional methods and regulation. We employed an environmentally extended input–output model to establish direct and indirect relations between water pollution and production in 19 Nepalese manufacturing sectors. We identify which are chief emitters of biochemical oxygen demand and total suspended solids. We categorize three sectors as pollution abatement industries (heavy polluters that portend relatively low clean-up costs) and three as pollution prevention industries (polluters responsible for accelerating pollution by inducing the release of pollutants from other linked sectors). We then draw upon statistical analysis to recommend appropriate pollution-reducing incentives or penalties for both categories. We find that incentives to meet discharge standards are effective for pollution abatement industries and that penalties (e.g., polluter pay) are effective in pollution prevention industries because they underpin Nepal’s economy. If these policies do not succeed as desired, emission control policies are warranted.

In leather industries, raw hides/skins are always preserved before being processed into leather. Salting method of preservation is the general and age old popular practice of preservation used in these industries. The main drawbacks of this method are the generation of huge amounts of pollution load, in terms of total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended salts (TSS), and chlorides; and ecological damage which occurs as a result of these waste effluents being discharged into the ground. Therefore, finding cheaper and eco-friendly methods of preservation has become a major necessity for these industries. In this manuscript, we have used ethanolic extract of Aegle marmelos for preservation which totally eliminates salt. The efficacy of this method was assessed by evaluating parameters such as microbial count, nitrogen content, and collagen content of the skin samples, and biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), TDS, and TSS of the waste effluents collected during processing of leather. It was found that this method showed a remarkable reduction in pollution loads like BOD (46%), COD (3-fold), TDS (many folds), and increased values of collagen content. Thus, we could conclude that preservation using A. marmelos was found to be more effective and eco-friendly.

The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration is one of the most water-scarce regions in China, because of the frequent human activities. Water scarcity and pollution have weakened the service functions of water ecosystems and hindered the regional economic development. As the “lifeline” of the economic development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the water quality of Beiyun River has been widely concerned. River water quality assessment is one of the most important aspects to enhance water resources management plans. Water quality index (WQI), as one of the most frequently used evaluation tools, was used to comprehensively analyze the water quality in the Beiyun River. Between January 2017 and October 2018, we collected samples from 16 typical sampling sites along the main rivers of the watershed, covering four seasons. Seventeen water quality parameters, including temperature, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD₅), ammonia nitrogen (NH₃-N), total phosphorus (TP), oil, volatile phenol (VP), fluoride, sulfide, surfactant, lead (Pb), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and arsenic (As), were used to calculate WQI. The average WQI values of Beiyun River in winter, spring, summer, and autumn were 88.15, 71.70, 78.92, and 90.12, respectively, explaining the water quality was “good” generally. There were significant differences in the spatial distribution of WQI values from Beiyun River, and water quality of upstream and downstream was better than that of midstream. In addition, correlation analysis was applied to explore the correlation between land use types and water quality. Water quality was significant negatively correlated with agriculture land and rural residential land, and a positive relationship between urban land and water quality. Generally, we believe that people’s related activities on different land use are major elements impacting the water quality. Water environment improvement ought to increase the wastewater collection rate and sewage treatment capacity in rural areas, especially in the midstream of the Beiyun River. Graphical abstract

Storage of greywater is controversial for environmental and health reasons. Artificial greywater was assessed after 2 and 7 days of storage time. Two different greywater pollutant strengths were statistically compared at each storage time. A negative significant (p < 0.05) correlation was evident with increasing storage time for the 5-day biochemical oxygen demand for more than 2 days. However, the concentrations of 5-day biochemical oxygen and chemical oxygen demands reduced significantly at 2 days of storage when compared with freshly prepared greywater. Biodegradability (5-day biochemical oxygen demand/chemical oxygen demand ratio) decreased significantly after storage to between 0.14 and 0.39. The nitrification process was improved significantly with increasing storage time concerning low strength greywater with a significant increase in the removal of ammonia-nitrogen and a non-significant decrease in the removal of nitrate-nitrogen. The correlation was significantly positive between ammonia-nitrogen and 5-day biochemical oxygen demand for stored greywater, while it was significantly negative between total suspended solids and both 5-day biochemical oxygen demand and dissolved oxygen. Significant reductions in colour, total suspended solids and turbidity were correlated positively with storage time. Precipitation of dissolved metals was suspected to occur in storing greywater by binding the inorganic components with the sediment and collide surfaces through adsorption, allowing a significant drop in concentrations of dissolved and undissolved metals with increasing storage time through sedimentation. Synthetic greywater of low mineral pollution had significantly higher removals for almost all concentrations compared with those for high concentrations. More advanced technologies for high trace element removal are required.

The use of roadway deicers, typically made of sand or salt, is essential for achieving safe roadway conditions by reducing ice and snow. Unfortunately, deicers can have detrimental effects on the surrounding infrastructure and environment. Traditional inorganic deicers, such as abrasives and chloride salts, have the most widespread usage, but recent concerns of the negative effects of chlorides on the environment have led to emerging alternative organic deicers. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the effectiveness and impacts of organic deicers including agro-based products, acetates, formates, glycols, and succinates. The benefits and negative impacts on the road, environment, and infrastructure are reviewed, as well as the performance of each deicer for snow and ice control on roadways. The environmental concerns of the organic deicers are discussed, including the largest environmental concern: the increase in biological oxygen demand (BOD) to receiving water bodies. The impact of deicers on metals and infrastructure is presented as it varies considerably for each alternative deicer. Finally, opportunities and challenges to implementing alternative deicers in the field is discussed.

Rapid population growth and urbanization has put a lot of stress on existing water bodies in most developing countries such as the Marriott Lake of Egypt. Three constructed wetland configurations including Typha angustifolia planted with enhanced atmospheric aeration by using perforated pipes networks (CWA), planted without perforated pipe network (CWR), and a control non-planted and without perforated pipes wetland (Control) were used in the study. Changes in physicochemical properties and microbial community over four seasons and hydraulic loading rate (HLR) (50, 100, 200, 300, and 400 L day⁻¹ m⁻¹) were monitored using influent from Marriott Lake in Egypt. Overall, the removal performance followed the sequence CWA>CWR>control. Turbidity removal of 98.4%; biochemical oxygen demand (BOD₅) removal of 83.3%; chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of 95.8%; NH₃-N removal of 99.9%; total nitrogen (TN) removal of 94.7%; NO₃⁻-N and NO₂⁻-N increased; total P (TP) removal of 99.7%, Vibrio sp. of 100%, Escherichia coli 100%; total bacterial count of 92.3%; and anaerobic bacteria reduction of 97.5% were achieved by using CWA. Seasonal variation and variation in HLRs had significant effect on performance. The modified planted CWA system enhances the removal of pollutants and could present a novel route for reducing the cost associated with integrating artificial aeration into wetlands.
