Distribution pattern of persistent organic pollutants in aquatic ecosystem at the Rosetta Nile branch estuary into the Mediterranean Sea, North of Delta, Egypt

The objective of this study was to evaluate the distribution pattern of persistent organic pollutants in water, sediment and aquatic biota represented by Oreochromis niloticus and Donax trunculus at the Rosetta Nile branch estuary. α-HCH, p,p′-DDE and polychlorinated biphenyls were the predominant compounds detected at ranges of 0.54–4.90 ng/l water, 0.75–2.41 ng/g, d. wt. sediment and 2.19–28.11 ng/g, fresh wt. biota. β and γ-HCHs, endosulfan compounds, heptachlor and heptachlor epoxide were at low detection frequencies. Totally, the organochlorine pollutants were at high levels and abundances in Donax spp. than in Tilapia spp. followed by sediment and water. These levels were ranged between lower and higher than those found by the other studies established in Egypt, and well below its tolerable residue levels in fish. A correlation was found for the quantified pollutants between water, sediment and biota. This is clearly reflecting the bioaccumulation properties of these compounds.

Microplastics (MPs) are generated from plastic and have negative impact to our environment due to high level of fragmentation. They can be originated from various sources in different forms such as fragment, fiber, foam and so on. For detection of MPs, many techniques have been developed with different functions such as microscopic observation, density separation, Raman and FTIR analysis. Besides, due to ingestion of MPs by wide range of marine species, research on the effect of this pollution on biota as well as human is vital. Therefore, we comprehensively reviewed the occurrence and distribution of MPs pollution in both marine and freshwater environments, including rivers, lakes and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). For future studies, we propose the development of new techniques for sampling MPs in aquatic environments and biota and recommend more research regarding MPs release by WWTPs.
Show more [+] Less [-]Assessment on marine litter ingested by fish in the Adriatic and NE Ionian Sea macro-region (Mediterranean)

This study presents data on the marine litter occurrence in the stomachs of fish species living in different marine habitats for the Adriatic and NE Ionian Sea macro-region. “Macro-litter” was examined in 614 specimens belonging to 11 species, while micro-litter in 230 specimens belonging to 7 species. The study highlights for the first time the presence of litter in the stomachs of the fish species Citharus linguatula. The occurrence of “macro-litter” in the guts of fish was <3% in both the NE Ionian and N Adriatic but reached 26% in the S Adriatic Sea. Micro-litter occurrence was 40 for the NE Ionian and increased to 87% in the N Adriatic (Slovenian Sea). The ingested “macro” and micro-litter differed among the areas. The marine habitat was found to affect the “macro”-litter ingestion but not the micro-litter.
