Tropospheric ozone is a dangerous atmospheric pollutant for forest ecosystems when it penetrates stomata. Thresholds for ozone-risk assessment are based on accumulated stomatal ozone fluxes such as the Phytotoxic Ozone Dose (POD). In order to identify the effect of ozone on a Holm oak forest in central Italy, four flux-based ozone impact response functions were implemented and tested in a multi-layer canopy model AIRTREE and evaluated against Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) obtained from observations of Eddy Covariance fluxes of CO₂. To evaluate if a clear phytotoxic threshold exists and if it changes during the year, six different detoxifying thresholds ranging between 0 and 5 nmol O₃ m⁻² s⁻¹ were tested.The use of species-specific rather than more general response functions based on plant functional types (PFT) increased model accuracy (RMSE reduced by up to 8.5%). In the case of linear response functions, a threshold of 1 nmol m⁻² s⁻² produced the best results for simulations of the whole year, although the tolerance to ozone changed seasonally, with higher tolerance (5 nmol m⁻² s⁻¹ or no ozone impact) for Winter and Spring and lower thresholds in Summer and Fall (0–1 nmol m⁻² s⁻¹). A “dynamic threshold” obtained by extracting the best daily threshold values from a range of different simulations helped reduce model overestimation of GPP by 213 g C m⁻² y⁻¹ and reduce RMSE up to 7.7%. Finally, a nonlinear ozone correction based on manipulative experiments produced the best results when no detoxifying threshold was applied (0 nmol O₃ m⁻² s⁻¹), suggesting that nonlinear functions fully account for ozone detoxification. The evidence of seasonal changes in ozone tolerance points to the need for seasonal thresholds to predict ozone damage and highlights the importance of performing more species-specific manipulative experiments to derive response functions for a broad range of plant species.

Commuters are exposed to a variety of physicochemical and microbiological pollutants that can lead to adverse health effects. This study aims to evaluate the indoor air quality (IAQ) in cars, buses and trains in Lisbon, to estimate inhaled doses while commuting and to evaluate the impacts of cleaning and ventilation on the IAQ. Particulate matter with diameter lower than 1, 2.5 and 10 μm (PM₁, PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀), black carbon (BC), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO₂) volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde (CH₂O) and total airborne bacteria and fungi were measured and bacterial isolates were identified. Results showed that the type of ventilation is the main factor affecting the IAQ in vehicle cabins. Under the fan off condition, the concentration of BC was lower, but the concentration of gases such as CO₂, CO and VOC tended to accumulate rapidly. When the ventilation was used, the coarse particles were filtered originating the decrease of indoor concentrations. Commuters travelling in trains received the lowest dose for all chemical pollutants, except VOC, mainly because railways are further away from the direct vehicular emissions. Commuters travelling in cars without ventilation received the highest inhaled dose for almost all pollutants despite having the lowest travel duration. Airborne microbiota was highly affected by the occupancy of the vehicles and therefore, the fungi and bacterial loads were higher in trains and buses. Most of the isolated species were human associated bacteria and some of the most abundant species have been linked to respiratory tract infections.

Since an invention of synthetic fibers (textiles), our life quality has been improved. However, the cumulative production and disposal of them have perceived as significant since they are not biodegradable and hard to be upcycled/recycled. From washing textiles, microplastics are released into the environment, which are regarded as emerging contaminants. As a means for source reduction of microplastics, this study proposed a rapid disposal platform for waste textiles (WTs), converting them into value-added products. To this end, catalytic pyrolysis of WT was studied. To offer more environmentally sound process, CO₂ was used as a raw material for WT pyrolysis. Thermal cracking of WT led to the production of syngas and CH₄ under the CO₂ environment. CO₂ resulted in additional CO production via gas phase reaction with volatile compounds evolved from pyrolysis of WT. To expedite the reaction kinetics for syngas formation, catalytic pyrolysis was done over Co-based catalyst. Comparing to non-catalytic pyrolysis, CO₂-assisted catalytic pyrolysis had 3- and 8-times higher production of H₂ and CO, respectively. This process also suppressed catalyst deactivation, converting more than 80 wt% of WT into syngas and CH₄. The more generation of CO from the use of CO₂ as a raw material offers an effective means to minimize the formations of harmful chemical species, such as benzene derivatives and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Forest and agricultural land use affects the concentration and composition of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in streams and rivers. To elucidate the impacts of forest and agricultural land use on stream DOC during storm events, we investigated DOC concentration ([DOC]), optical properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM), and Δ¹⁴C-DOC in both forest- and agriculture-dominated headwater streams in South Korea in the summer of 2012. One forested and five agricultural streams were investigated. During storms, the peak [DOC] of forest stream increased to 5.8 mg L⁻¹, approximately two times larger than that of the most agricultural stream (3.2 mg L⁻¹), demonstrating the weaker storm responses of the [DOC] of agricultural streams to hydrological change. Five PARAFAC components were identified, including three terrestrial humic-like substances (C1, C2, C3), one microbial humic substance (C4), and one microbial protein-like substances (C5). The mean (C4+C5)/(C1+C2+C3) of all storm events at the most agricultural stream was 1.5 times larger than that of the most forested stream, suggesting that more protein-like DOM is exported from agricultural watersheds. Whereas a forest stream was primarily composed of terrestrially derived and ¹⁴C-enriched modern DOC, the ¹⁴C-age of the most agricultural stream was up to ∼1000 years old. The results suggest that agricultural practices could decrease the old organic carbon pools from soils. However, how quickly the aged DOC can be degraded to CO₂ in streams is unknown, warranting future investigation on lability of the aged DOC and their effects on CO₂ evasion from rivers and estuaries downstream.

Biofuel production via pyrolysis has received increasing interest as a promising solution for utilization of now wasted food residue. In this study, the fast pyrolysis of mixed food waste (MFW) was performed in a bubbling fluidized-bed reactor. This was done under different operating conditions (reaction temperatures and carrier gas flow rate) that influence product distribution and bio-oil composition. The highest liquid yield (49.05 wt%) was observed at a pyrolysis temperature of 475 °C. It was also found that the quality of pyrolysis bio-oils (POs) could be improved using catalysts. The catalytic fast pyrolysis of MFW was studied to upgrade the pyrolysis vapor, using dolomite, red mud, and HZSM-5. The higher heating values (HHVs) of the catalytic pyrolysis bio-oils (CPOs) ranged between 30.47 and 35.69 MJ/kg, which are higher than the HHVs of non-catalytic pyrolysis bio-oils (27.69–31.58 MJ/kg). The major components of the bio-oils were fatty acids, N-containing compounds, and derivatives of phenol. The selectivity for bio-oil components varied depending on the catalysts. In the presence of the catalysts, the oxygen was removed from oxygenates via moisture, CO₂, and CO. The CPOs contained aliphatic hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic compounds (such as naphthalene), pyridine derivatives, and light oxygenates (cyclic alkenes and ketones).

This research determines the intertemporal relationships caused by the coal, oil, and natural gas consumption in the carbon dioxide emission by the G7 countries from 1965 to 2018. Auto-regressive and Distributed Lags models and Bound test were used to detect cointegration and understand the dynamic effect. Due to structural breaks occurred in the variables, two dummy variables for the periods of breaks, 1978 and 1990 were incorporated respectively. Positive causality was identified, in the sense that the consumption of fossil fuels provides an increase in carbon dioxide emissions. Short-term elasticities indicate that an increase of 1 percentage point in the consumption of oil, coal, and natural gas will cause, respectively, an increase of 0.4823%, 0.3140%, and 0.1717% in carbon dioxide emissions. In the long run, the increase of 1 percentage point in the consumption of oil, coal, and natural gas will cause, respectively, an increase of 0.4924%, 0.2692%, and 0.1829% in carbon dioxide emissions. The error correction model (ECM = −0.4739) indicates that 47.39% of a shock in the carbon dioxide emissions variable is resolved in one year and after 2 years, carbon dioxide emissions return to long term equilibrium.

Biochar is often applied to paddy soils as a soil improver, as it retains nutrients and increases C sequestration; as such, it is a tool in the move towards C-neutral agriculture. Nitrogen (N) fertilizers have been excessively applied to rice paddies, particularly in small farms in China, because N is the major limiting factor for rice production. In paddy soils, dynamic changes in iron (Fe) continuously affect soil emissions of methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂); however, the links between Fe dynamics and greenhouse gas emissions, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and rice yields following application of biochar remain unclear. The aims of this study were to examine the effects of two rates of nitrogen (N)-enriched biochar (4 and 8 t ha⁻¹ y⁻¹) on paddy soil C emissions and storage, rice yields, and Fe dynamics in subtropical early and late rice growing seasons. Field application of N-enriched biochar at 4 and 8 t ha⁻¹ increased C emissions in early and late rice, whereas application at 4 t ha⁻¹ significantly increased rice yields. The results of a culture experiment and a field experiment showed that the application of N-enriched biochar increased soil Fe²⁺concentration. There were positive correlations between Fe²⁺concentrations and soil CO₂, CH₄, and total C emissions, and with soil DOC concentrations. On the other way around, these correlations were negative for soil Fe³⁺concentrations. In the soil culture experiment, under the exclusion of plant growth, N-enriched biochar reduced cumulative soil emissions of CH₄ and CO₂. We conclude that moderate inputs of N-rich biochar (4 t ha⁻¹) increase rice crop yield and biomass, and soil DOC concentrations, while moderating soil cumulative C emissions, in part, by the impacts of biochar on soil Fe dynamics. We suggest that water management strategies, such as dry-wet cycles, should be employed in rice cultivation to increase Fe²⁺ oxidation for the inhibition of soil CH₄ and CO₂ production. Overall, we showed that application of 4 t ha⁻¹ of N-enriched biochar may represent a potential tool to improve sustainable food production and security, while minimizing negative environmental impacts.

Plastic mulching and straw incorporation are common agricultural practices in China. Plastic mulching is suspected to be a significant source of microplastics in terrestrial environments. Straw incorporation has many effects on the storage of soil organic carbon (SOC) and greenhouse gas emissions, but these effects have not been studied in the presence of microplastic pollution. In this study, 365-day soil incubation experiments were conducted to assess the effects of maize straw and polyethylene microplastics on SOC fractions and carbon dioxide (CO₂) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions in two different soils (fluvo-aquic and latosol). Against the background of straw incorporation, microplastics reduced the mineralization and decomposition of SOC, resulting in a microbially available SOC content decrease by 18.9%. In addition, microplastics were carbon-rich, but relatively stable and difficult to be used by microorganisms, thus increasing the mineral-associated SOC content by 52.5%. This indicated that microplastics had adverse effects on microbially available SOC and positive effects on mineral-associated SOC. Microplastics also decreased coarse particulate SOC (>250 μm), and increased non-aggregated silt and clay aggregated SOC (<53 μm). Furthermore, microplastics changed microbial community compositions, thereby reducing the CO₂ and N₂O emissions of straw incorporation by 26.5%–33.9% and 35.4%–39.7%, respectively. These results showed that microplastics partially offset the increase of CO₂ and N₂O emissions induced by straw incorporation. Additionally, the inhibitory effect of microplastics on CO₂ emissions in fluvo-aquic soil was lower than that in latosol soil, whereas the inhibitory effect on N₂O emissions had the opposite trend.

Plastic pollution is a global issue posing a threat to marine biota with ecological implications on ecosystem functioning. Micro and nanoplastic impact on phytoplankton autotrophic species (e.g., cell growth inhibition, decrease in chlorophyll a and photosynthetic efficiency and hetero-aggregates formation) have been largely documented. However, the heterogeneity of data makes rather difficult a comparison based on size (i.e. micro vs nano). In addition, knowledge gaps on the ecological impact on phytoplankton assemblage structure and functioning are evident. A new virtual meta-analysis on cause-effect relationships of micro and nanoplastics on phytoplankton species revealed the significant effect posed by polymer type on reducing cell density for tested PVC, PS and PE plastics. Linked with autotrophic phytoplankton role in atmospheric CO₂ fixation, a potential impact of plastics on marine carbon pump is discussed. The understanding of the effects of microplastics and nanoplastics on the phytoplankton functioning is fundamental to raise awareness on the overall impact on the first level of marine food web. Interactions between micro and nanoplastics and phytoplankton assemblages have been quite documented by in vitro examinations; but, further studies considering natural plankton assemblages and/or large mesocosm experiments should be performed to evaluate and try predicting ecological impacts on primary producers.

In this study, a sustainable NH₂-MIL-101(Al) is synthesized and subjected to characterization for cryogenic CO₂ adsorption, isotherms, and thermodynamic study. The morphology revealed a highly porous surface. The XRD showed that NH₂-MIL-101(Al) was crystalline. The NH₂-MIL-101(Al) decomposes at a temperature (>500 °C) indicating excellent thermal stability. The BET investigation revealed the specific surface area of 2530 m²/g and the pore volume of 1.32 cm³/g. The CO₂ adsorption capacity was found to be 9.55 wt% to 2.31 wt% within the investigated temperature range. The isotherms revealed the availability of adsorption sites with favorable adsorption at lower temperatures indicating the thermodynamically controlled process. The thermodynamics showed that the process is non-spontaneous, endothermic, with fewer disorders, chemisorption. Finally, the breakthrough time of NH₂-MIL-101(Al) is 31.25% more than spherical glass beads. The CO₂ captured by the particles was 2.29 kg m⁻³. The CO₂ capture using glass packing was 121% less than NH₂-MIL-101(Al) under similar conditions of temperature and pressure.
