Developing low-cost and high-performance biosorbent for water purification continues drawing more and more attention. In this study, cellulose-chitosan composite hydrogels were fabricated via a co-dissolution and regeneration process using a molten salt hydrate (a 60 wt% aqueous solution of LiBr) as a solvent. The addition of chitosan not only introduced functionality for metal adsorption but also increased the specific surface area and improved the mechanical strength of the composite hydrogel, compared to pure cellulose hydrogel. Batch adsorption experiments indicated that the composite hydrogel with 37% cellulose and 63% chitosan exhibited an adsorption capacity of 94.3 mg/g (1.49 mmol/g) toward Cu²⁺ at 23 °C, pH 5, and initial metal concentration of 1500 mg/L, which was 10 times greater than the adsorption capacity of pure cellulose hydrogel. Competitive adsorption from a mixed metals solution revealed that the cellulose-chitosan composite hydrogel exhibited selective adsorption of the metals in the order of Cu²⁺ > Zn²⁺ > Co²⁺. This study successfully demonstrated an innovative method to fabricate biosorbents from abundant and renewable natural polymers (cellulose and chitosan) for removing metal ions from water.

Aquatic plant biomass like Iris pseudacorus can be used as electron donor to improve denitrification performance in subsurface constructed wetlands. However, the phenomenon that the nitrogen removal rate declined in the terminal stage restricted the utilization of litters. In terms of this problem, this study investigated the performance of the used biomass through alkali treatment on nitrogen removal and analyzed the effect of alkali treatment on the component and structure of biomass and microbial community. The results showed that the alkali-treated biomass could further enhance the nitrogen removal by nearly 15% compared with used ones. The significant damage of cell walls and compact fibers containing cellulose and lignin through alkali treatment mainly resulted in the improvement of carbon release and nitrogen removal. With the addition of alkali-treated biomass, the richness index of microbes was higher compared with other biomass materials. Furthermore, the abundance of denitrification related genera increased and the abundance of genera for nitrification was maintained. Based on these finds, a mode of a more efficient Iris pseudacorus self-consumed subsurface flow constructed wetlands was designed. In this mode, the effluent total nitrogen could be stabilized below 5 mg L⁻¹ for nine months and the weight of litters could be further cut down by 75%. These findings would contribute to efficient utilization of plant biomass for nitrogen removal enhancement and final residue reduction in the wetlands.

The availability of organic matters in vast quantities from the agricultural/industrial practices has long been a significant environmental challenge. These wastes have created global issues in increasing the levels of BOD or COD in water as well as in soil or air segments. Such wastes can be converted into bioenergy using a specific conversion platform in conjunction with the appropriate utilization of the methods such as anaerobic digestion, secondary waste treatment, or efficient hydrolytic breakdown as these can promote bioenergy production to mitigate the environmental issues. By the proper utilization of waste organics and by adopting innovative approaches, one can develop bioenergy processes to meet the energy needs of the society. Waste organic matters from plant origins or other agro-sources, biopolymers, or complex organic matters (cellulose, hemicelluloses, non-consumable starches or proteins) can be used as cheap raw carbon resources to produce biofuels or biogases to fulfill the ever increasing energy demands. Attempts have been made for bioenergy production by biosynthesizing, methanol, n-butanol, ethanol, algal biodiesel, and biohydrogen using different types of organic matters via biotechnological/chemical routes to meet the world’s energy need by producing least amount of toxic gases (reduction up to 20–70% in concentration) in order to promote sustainable green environmental growth. This review emphasizes on the nature of available wastes, different strategies for its breakdown or hydrolysis, efficient microbial systems. Some representative examples of biomasses source that are used for bioenergy production by providing critical information are discussed. Furthermore, bioenergy production from the plant-based organic matters and environmental issues are also discussed. Advanced biofuels from the organic matters are discussed with efficient microbial and chemical processes for the promotion of biofuel production from the utilization of plant biomasses.

Root cell wall (RCW) modification is a widespread important defense strategy of plant to cope with trace metals. However, mechanisms underlying its remolding in cadmium (Cd) accumulation are still lacking in hyperaccumulators. In this study, changes of RCW structures and components between nonhyperaccumulating ecotype (NHE) and hyperaccumulating ecotype (HE) of Sedum alfredii were investigated simultaneously. Under 25 μM Cd treatment, RCW thickness of NHE is nearly 2 folds than that of HE and the thickened cell wall of NHE was enriched in low-methylated pectin, leading to more Cd trapped in roots tightly. In the opposite, large amounts of high-methylated pectin were assembled around RCW of HE with Cd supply, in this way, HE S. alfredii decreased its root fixation of Cd and enhanced Cd migration into xylem. TEM and AFM results further confirmed that thickened cell wall was caused by the increased amounts of cellulose and lignin while root tip lignification was resulted from variations of sinapyl (S) and guaiacyl (G) monomers. Overall, thickened cell wall and methylated pectin have synchronicity in spatial location of roots, and their coordination contributed to Cd accumulation in S. alfredii.

The bioaerosols present in indoor air play a major role in the transmission of infectious diseases to humans, therefore concern about their exposure is increased recently. In this regard, the present investigation described the preparation of lemongrass essential oil (LGEO) loaded chitosan and cellulose nanofibers composites (CH/CNF) for controlling the indoor air bioaerosol. The evaluation of the inhibitory effect of the composite system on culturable bacteria of the indoor air was done at different sites (air volume from 30 m³ to 80 m³) and in different size fractions of aerosol (<0.25 μm–2.5 μm). The composite system had high encapsulation efficiency (88–91%) and citrals content. A significant reduction in culturable bacteria of aerosol (from 6.23 log CFUm⁻³ to 2.33 log CFUm⁻³) was observed in presence of cellulose nanofibers and chitosan composites. The bacterial strains such as Staphylococcus sp., Bacillus cereus, Bacillus pseudomycoides sp., Pseudomonas otitidis, and Pseudomonas sp. Cf0-3 in bioaerosols were inhibited dominantly due to the diffusion of aroma molecules in indoor air. The results indicate that the interaction of diffused aroma molecule from the composite system with bacterial strains enhanced the production of ROS, resulting in loss of membrane integrity of bacterial cells. Among different size fractions of aerosol, the composite system was more effective in finer size fractions (<0.25 μm) of aerosol due to the interaction of smaller aroma compounds with bacterial cells. The study revealed that LGEO loaded chitosan and cellulose nanofibers composites could be a good option for controlling the culturable bacteria even in small-sized respirable bioaerosol.

We investigated the roles of rootstocks in Cu accumulation and tolerance in Malus plants by grafting ‘Hanfu’ (HF) scions onto M. baccata (Mb) and M. prunifolia (Mp) rootstocks, which have different Cu tolerances. The grafts were exposed to basal or excess Cu for 20 d. Excess Cu-treated HF/Mb had less biomass, and pronounced root architecture deformation and leaf ultrastructure damage than excess Cu-challenged HF/Mp. Root Cu concentrations and bio-concentration factor (BCF) were higher in HF/Mp than HF/Mb, whereas HF/Mb had higher stem and leaf Cu concentrations than HF/Mp. Excess Cu lowered root and aerial tissue BCF and translocation factor (Tf) in all plants; however, Tf was markedly higher in HF/Mb than in HF/Mp. The subcellular distribution of Cu in the roots and leaves indicated that excess Cu treatments increased Cu fixation in the root cell walls, which decreased Cu mobility. Compared to HF/Mb, HF/Mp sequestered more Cu in its root cell walls and less Cu in leaf plastids, nuclei, and mitochondria. Moreover, HF/Mp roots and leaves had higher concentrations of water-insoluble Cu compounds than HF/Mb, which reduced Cu mobility and toxicity. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that the carboxyl, hydroxyl and acylamino groups of the cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin and proteins were the main Cu binding sites in the root cell walls. Excess Cu-induced superoxide anion and malondialdehyde were 28.6% and 5.1% lower, but soluble phenolics, ascorbate and glutathione were 10.5%, 41.9% and 17.7% higher in HF/Mp than HF/Mb leaves. Compared with HF/Mb, certain genes involved in Cu transport were downregulated, while other genes involved in detoxification were upregulated in HF/Mp roots and leaves. Our results show that Mp inhibited Cu translocation and mitigated Cu toxicity in Malus scions by regulating Cu mobility, antioxidant defense mechanisms, and transcription of key genes involved in Cu translocation and detoxification.

Plastics are globally distributed in oceans and can pose a threat to the environment and organisms. In this study, plastic pollution in surface water and sediments of the Bohai Sea was assessed based on plastic abundance, distribution and characteristics (shape, polymer, size and color). Water and sediment samples were collected across the sea using a plankton net (330 μm) and a grab sampler, respectively. The following conclusions were reached. 1) In surface water, large plastics were less abundant (0.14 items/m³) and showed less diverse characteristics than microplastics (0.79 items/m³) but did not significantly differ in spatial distribution. 2) Microplastics in water were more abundant (1.95 items/m³) with more diverse characteristics in Liaodong Bay than in other regions of the sea (0.26–0.59 items/m³). Plastic waste from highly concentrated agricultural, industrial and fishery activities could make large contributions to microplastics in Liaodong Bay. Additionally, low hydrodynamics and long distance to Bohai Strait are unfavorable for diffusion of particles, facilitating the retention of microplastics and increasing the abundance in this bay. 3) Microplastics in sediments were smaller in terms of dominant sizes (<0.5 mm) with less diverse characteristics than particles in water (0.5–1.5 mm). Specifically, fragments, foams and lines dominated among the microplastics in water, whereas fibers and fragments were dominant particles in sediments; alkyd resin, polyethylene, polystyrene and polypropylene (PP) predominated among the particles in water, but rayon, cellulose and PP were dominant particles in sediments. 4) Neither abundance nor size of microplastics in the two media was proportionally correlated and showed low similarity indexes of polymer (0.16), shape (0.29) or color (0.38). This could be related to mismatch in spatiotemporal distributions and variations in the characteristics, fate and behavior of microplastics in the two media. The findings provide knowledge for tracing the sources of plastics in the Bohai Sea.

Tea plant is capable of hyper-accumulating fluoride (F) in leaves, suggesting drinking tea may cause excessive F intake in our body and threaten the health. This study investigated the changes in the structure, composition, and F content in the leaf cell wall of the tea (Camellia sinensis) under different F conditions to demonstrate the role of cell wall in F enrichment in tea plants. The cell wall was shown as the main part for F accumulation (67%–92%), with most of F distributed in the pectin fraction (56%–71%). With increasing F concentration, a significant increase (p < 0.05) was observed in the F content of cell wall and its components, the level of cell wall metal ions (i.e. Cu, Mg, Zn, Al, Ca, Ba, Mn), as well as the content of total cell wall materials, cellulose, and pectin. Meanwhile, the level of Cu, Mg, Zn, pectin, and cellulose was significantly positively correlated with the F content in the leaf cell wall. F addition was shown to increase the fluorescence intensity of LM19 and 2F4 antibody-labeled low-methylesterified homogalacturonans (HGs), while decrease LM20-labeled high-methylesterified HGs, coupled with an increase in the activity and gene expression of pectin methyl esterases (PMEs) in tea leaves. All these results suggest that F addition can increase pectin content and demethylesterification, leading to increased absorption of metal cations and chelation of F in the cell wall through the action of metal ions.

Rumen liquid can effectively degrade lignocellulosic biomass, in which rumen microorganisms play an important role. In this study, transformation of bacterial community structure in rumen liquid anaerobic digestion of rice straw was explored. Results showed that rice straw was efficiently hydrolyzed and acidified, and the degradation efficiency of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin reached 46.2%, 60.4%, and 12.9%, respectively. The concentration of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and total volatile fatty acid (VFA) reached 12.9 and 8.04 g L⁻¹. The high-throughput sequencing results showed that structure of rumen bacterial community significantly changed in anaerobic digestion. The Shannon diversity index showed that rumen bacterial diversity decreased by 32.8% on the 5th day of anaerobic digestion. The relative abundance of Prevotella and Fibrobacter significantly increased, while Ruminococcus significantly decreased at the genus level. The Spearman correlation heatmap showed that pH and VFA were the critical factors affecting the rumen bacterial community structure. The function prediction found that rumen bacteria mainly functioned in carbohydrate transport and metabolism, which might contain a large number of lignocellulose degrading enzyme genes. These studies are conducive to the better application of rumen microorganisms in the degradation of lignocellulosic biomass.

Ammonium molybdophosphate (AMP) exhibits high selectivity towards Cs but it cannot be directly applied in column packing, so it is necessary to prepare AMP–based adsorbents into an available form to improve its practicality. This work provided two AMP immobilized cellulose microspheres (MCC@AMP and MCC-g-AMP) as adsorbents for Cs removal by radiation grafting technique. MCC-g-AMP was prepared by radiation graft polymerization of GMA on microcrystalline cellulose microspheres (MCC) followed by reaction with AMP suspension, and MCC@AMP was synthesized by radiation hybrid grafting of AMP and GMA onto MCC through one step. The different structures and morphologies of two adsorbents were characterized by FTIR and SEM. The adsorption properties of two adsorbents against Cs were investigated and compared in batch and column experiments under different conditions. Both adsorbents were better obeyed pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. MCC-g-AMP presented faster adsorption kinetic and more stable structure, whereas MCC@AMP presented more facile synthesis and higher adsorption capacity. MCC@AMP was pH independent in the range of pH 1–12 but MCC-g-AMP was sensitive to pH for Cs removal. The saturated column adsorption capacities of MCC@AMP and MCC-g-AMP were 5.4 g-Cs/L-ad and 0.75 g-Cs/L-ad in column adsorption experiments at SV 10 h⁻¹. Both adsorbents exhibited very high radiation stability and can maintain an adsorption capacity of >85% even after 1000 kGy γ-irradiation. On the basis, two AMP-loaded adsorbents possessed promising application in removal of Cs from actual contaminated groundwater. These findings provided two efficient adsorbents for treatment of Cs in radioactive waste disposal.
