Membrane concentrated landfill leachate (MCLL) contains large amounts of recalcitrant organic matter that cause potential hazards to the environment. Knowledge on the compositional variation of MCLL during treatment is important for a better understanding on the degradation pathway of organic pollutants. In this work, the structural change of MCLL during Fenton oxidation process was examined using spectroscopic techniques. The removal rates of COD, TOC and UV254 reached 78.9 ± 1.3%, 70.2 ± 1.4% and 90.64 ± 1.6%, respectively, under the optimal condition (i.e., dosage of H2O2 = 9.0 mL/200 mL, H2O2/Fe(II) molar ratio = 3.0, pH = 3.0, time = 40 min). Spectral analyses suggested that aromatic/CC structure and CO bonds in MCLL can be successfully destroyed by Fenton oxidation, resulting in a decrease in molecular weight. One fulvic-like and one humic-like components were identified in MCLL, both of which can be removed by Fenton treatment. In addition, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopic analyses suggested the oxidative changes of MCLL structure in the order of fulvic-like component/unsaturated conjugated bond > aromatic structure > humic-like component. The results may provide a new insight to the understanding on the structure variation of MCLL during treatment, which is beneficial for the design of cost-effective treatment strategies.

ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) have been detected in various wastewater treatment plants. It is widely assumed that size has a crucial effect on the NPs toxicity. Concerns have been raised over probable size-dependent toxicity of ZnO NPs to activated sludge, which could eventually affect the treatment efficiencies of wastewater treatment facilities. The size-dependent influences of ZnO NPs on performance, microbial activities, and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from activated sludge were examined in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) in present study. Three different sizes (15, 50, and 90 nm) and five concentrations (2, 5, 10, 30, and 60 mg L⁻¹) were trialled. The inhibitions on COD and nitrogen removal were determined by the particle size, and smaller ZnO NPs (15 nm) showed higher inhibition effect than those of 50 and 90 nm, whereas the ZnO NPs with size of 50 nm showed maximum inhibition effect on phosphorus removal among three sizes of ZnO NPs. After exposure to different sized ZnO NPs, microbial enzymatic activities and removal rates of activated sludge represented the same trend, consistent with the nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency. In addition, apparent size- and concentration-dependent effects on EPS contents and components were also observed. Compared with the absence of ZnO NPs, 60 mg L⁻¹ ZnO NPs with sizes of 15, 50, and 90 nm increased the EPS contents from 92.5, 92.4, and 92.0 mg g⁻¹ VSS to 277.5, 196.8, and 178.2 mg g⁻¹ VSS (p < 0.05), respectively. The protein and polysaccharide contents increased with the decreasing particle sizes and increasing ZnO NPs concentrations, and the content of protein was always higher than that of polysaccharide.

The Sürgü Stream, located in the Euphrates River basin of Turkey, is used for drinking water source, agricultural irrigation and rainbow trout production. Therefore, water quality of the stream is of great importance. In this study, multivariate statistical techniques (MSTs) and water quality index (WQI) were applied to assess water quality of the stream affected by multiple stressors such as untreated domestic sewage, effluents from fish farms, agricultural runoff and streambank erosion. For this, 16 water quality parameters at five sites along the stream were monitored monthly during one year. Most of parameters showed significant spatial variations, indicating the influence of anthropogenic activities. All parameters except TN (total nitrogen) showed significant seasonal differences due to high seasonality in WT (water temperature) and water flow. The spatial variations in the WQI were significant (p < 0.05) and the mean WQI values ranged from 87.6 to 95.3, indicating “good” to “excellent” water quality in the stream. Cluster analysis classified five sites into three groups, that is, clean region, low polluted region and very clean region. Stepwise temporal discriminant analysis (DA) identified that pH, WT, Cl⁻, SO₄²⁻, COD (chemical oxygen demand), TSS (total suspended solids) and Ca²⁺ are the parameters responsible for variations between seasons, and stepwise spatial DA identified that DO (dissolved oxygen), EC (electrical conductivity), NH₄–N, TN (total nitrogen) and TSS are the parameters responsible for variations between the regions. Principal component analysis/factor analysis revealed that the parameters responsible for water quality variations were mainly associated with suspended solids (both natural and anthropogenic), soluble salts (natural) and nutrients and organic matter (anthropogenic).

Plant-derived materials as environmentally friendly biosorbents to remove heavy metals from wastewater have been extensively studied. However, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) increase caused by the plant-derived biosorbent has not been considered previously. In this study, water hyacinth was used as biosorbent to remove Cd(II) from wastewater. About 66% of Cd(II) was removed by the biosorbent with a maximum biosorption capacity (qₘₐₓ) of 21.6 mg g⁻¹. However, the COD of the filtrate increased from 0 to 292 mg L⁻¹ during this process. Subsequently, endophytes, microalgae and the microalgae-endophyte symbiotic system (MESS) were assessed for the simultaneous Cd(II) and COD removal. Among these three systems, the MESS achieved the best performance. After 3 d of inoculation, the extent of total Cd(II) removal increased to 99.2% while COD decreased to 77 mg L⁻¹. This study provides a new insight into the application of a plant-derived biosorbent in combination with microalgae and endophytes for the effective treatment of heavy metal-bearing wastewater.

This study aimed to evaluate the impacts of morphological-controlled ZnO nanoarchitectures on aerobic microbial communities during real wastewater treatment in an aerobic-photocatalytic system. Results showed that the antibacterial properties of ZnO nanoarchitectures were significantly more overwhelming than their photocatalytic properties. The inhibition of microbial activities in activated sludge by ZnO nanoarchitectures entailed an adverse effect on wastewater treatment efficiency. Subsequently, the 16S sequencing analysis were conducted to examine the impacts of ZnO nanoarchitectures on aerobic microbial communities, and found the significantly lower microbial diversity and species richness in activated sludge treated with 1D-ZnO nanorods as compared to other ZnO nanoarchitectures. Additionally, 1D-ZnO nanorods reduced the highest proportion of Proteobacteria phylum in activated sludge due to its higher proportion of active polar surfaces that facilitates Zn²⁺ ions dissolution. Pearson correlation coefficients showed that the experimental data obtained from COD removal efficiency and bacterial log reduction were statistically significant (p-value < 0.05), and presented a positive correlation with the concentration of Zn²⁺ ions. Finally, a non-parametric analysis of Friedman test and post-hoc analysis confirmed that the concentration of Zn²⁺ ions being released from ZnO nanoarchitectures is the main contributing factor for both the reduction in COD removal efficiency and bacterial log reduction.

The Keban Dam Reservoir, located on the Euphrates River, is the second largest reservoir of Turkey. Water quality of this reservoir is of great importance because it is widely used for recreation, aquaculture production, fishing, and irrigation. In this study, discriminant analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), factor analysis (FA) and cluster analysis (CA) were conducted to evaluate the seasonal and spatial variations in surface water quality of the reservoir. Also, total phosphorus (TP) content in sediments, water type and trophic status of the reservoir were determined. For this, 19 water quality variables and TP in sediments were monitored seasonally at 11 sampling stations on the reservoir during one year. Hierarchical CA classified 11 stations into three groups, i.e., upstream (moderate polluted), midstream (low polluted) and downstream (clean) regions. PCA/FA allowed to group the variables responsible for variations in water quality, which are mainly related to mineral dissolution (natural), organic matter and nutrients (anthropogenic), and physical parameters (natural). Discriminant analysis (DA) gave better results for both data reduction and spatio-temporal analysis. Stepwise temporal DA identified eight variables: water temperature (WT), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrate nitrogen (NO₃–N), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), potassium (K⁺), magnesium (Mg²⁺), and calcium (Ca²⁺), which are the most significant variables responsible for temporal variations in water quality of the reservoir, while stepwise spatial DA identified three variables: K⁺, chloride (Cl⁻), and sulphate (SO₄⁻²), which are the most significant variables responsible for spatial variations. According to Ontario sediment-quality guidelines, sediments of the reservoir can be considered as unpolluted in terms of mean TP content. The water type of the reservoir was calcium-bicarbonate. According to trophic state index values based on TP and Chl-a, upstream region (moderate polluted) of the reservoir was in the eutrophic status, whereas other regions were in the mesotrophic status.

Groundwater pollution early warning has been regarded as an effective tool for regional groundwater pollution prevention, especially in China. In this study, the systemic model was established to assess the groundwater pollution early warning by integrating the present situation of groundwater quality (Q), groundwater quality trend (T) and groundwater pollution risk (R). The model integrated spatial and temporal variation of groundwater quality, and combined the state and process of the groundwater pollution. Q, T and R were assessed by the methods of fuzzy comprehensive assessment, Spearman or nonparametric Mann-Kendall trend test, and overlay index, respectively. Taking the Luoyang City as an example, the groundwater pollution early warning mapping was generated, and verified by corresponding the groundwater quality classes and the early warning degrees. The results showed that the groundwater was dominated by the levels of no warning and light warning, which accounted for 77% of the study area. The serious and tremendous warning areas were affected by the worse trend and relatively bad/bad present situations of groundwater quality with the typical contaminants of total hardness, nitrate, Hg and COD. In summary, the present situation of groundwater quality was the most important factor of groundwater pollution early warning mapping in the study area. The worse trend of groundwater quality played equally a key role in the local regions, as well as the high pollution risk, which was mainly affected by the pollution source loading. Targeted measures for groundwater pollution prevention were proposed in the corresponding degrees of groundwater pollution early warning. The QTR model was proved to be effective for assessing the regional groundwater pollution early warning. The accuracy of the model could be improved if there is further data acquisition of groundwater quality in longer time series and in larger number, and further investigation of pollution sources.The QTR model is proposed and proved to be effective for assessing regional groundwater pollution early warning.

Characteristics and transformation of organic phosphorus in water are vital to biogeochemical cycling of phosphorus and support of blooms of phytoplankton and cyanobacteria. Using solution ³¹P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), combined with field surveys and lab analyses, composition and structural characteristics of dissolved phosphorus (DP), particulate phosphorus (PP) and organic P in algae were studied in two eutrophic lakes in China, Tai Lake and Chao Lake. Factors influencing migration and transformation of these constituents in lake ecosystems were also investigated. A method was developed to extract, flocculate and concentrate DP and PP from lake water samples. Results showed that orthophosphate (Ortho-P) constituted 32.4%–81.3% of DP and 43.7%–54.9% of PP, respectively; while monoester phosphorus (Mono-P) was 13.2%–54.0% of DP and 32.9%–43.7% of PP, respectively. Phosphorus in algae was mostly organic P, especially Mono-P, which was ≥50% of TP. Environmental factors and water quality parameters such as temperature (T), electrical conductivity (EC), pH, secchi depth (SD), dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (CODcᵣ), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), affected the absolute and relative concentrations of various P components in the two lakes. Increased temperature promoted bioavailable P (Ortho-P and Mono-P) release to the lake waters. The results can provide an important theoretical basis for the mutual conversion process of organic P components between various media in the lake water environment.

The occurrence of microplastics was investigated in water, sediment and fish from the Fengshan River system. All collected samples contained microplastics with 334–1058 items/m³ in the water samples, 508-3987 items/kg dry weight in the sediment samples and 14–94 items/fish in the fish samples. The spatial distribution of microplastics in water and sediments was attributed to anthropogenic discharges, flow dynamics, tidal exchanges and microplastic density. This was evidenced by significant correlations of microplastics with the river pollution index (RPI), chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solid (SS), flow velocity and the presence of different polymer types of microplastics in water and sediment. Microplastic abundance in fish was correlated to SS, pH and conductivity, indicating that these water quality variables might affect bioavailability of microplastics to fish. Concentrations of microplastics/cm length of demersal fish at a higher trophic level (Leiognathus equulus and Pomadasys argenteus) were higher than those of a benthopelagic fish (Oreochromis niloticus niloticus). The significant relationships observed suggest that collected fish might prefer to ingest long fibrous microplastics from sediments and large fragmented microplastics from water. The high levels of 3- and 4-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), particularly fluoranthene and pyrene, in fish muscle revealed that the collected fish species might have a high ability to accumulate these PAHs from food and the environment. Significant relationships between some PAHs in fish and microplastic abundances in water/sediments/fish suggested that these PAHs might be accumulated by fish from contaminated microplastics. This study provides unique information on the factors influencing the spatial distribution of microplastics and the role of microplastics on the accumulation of PAHs by fish.

Biodigested coffee processing wastewater (CPW) presents a high organic load and does not meet the limits imposed by legislation (namely in Brazil) for discharge into water bodies. Anaerobic digestion generally cannot provide a satisfactory organic matter reduction in CPW as a significant fraction of recalcitrant compounds still persists in the treated effluent. So, this study aims to find alternative ways to remove refractory organic compounds from this wastewater in order to improve the biodegradability and reduce the toxicity, which will allow its recirculation back into the anaerobic digester. Three treatment approaches (Fenton’s oxidation - Approach 1, Coagulation/flocculation (C/F) - Approach 2, and the combination of C/F with Fenton’s process - Approach 3) were selected to be applied to the biodigested CPW in order to achieve that objective.The application of the Fenton process under the optimal operating conditions (initial pH = 5.0; T = 55 °C, [Fe³⁺] = 1.8 g L⁻¹ and [H₂O₂] = 9.0 g L⁻¹) increased the biodegradability (the BOD₅:COD ratio raised from 0.34 ± 0.02 in biodigested CPW to 0.44 ± 0.01 after treatment) and eliminated the toxicity (0.0% of Vibrio fischeri inhibition) along with moderate removals of organic matter (51.3%, 55.7% and 39.7% for total organic carbon – TOC, chemical oxygen demand – COD and biochemical oxygen demand - BOD₅, respectively). The implementation of a coagulation/flocculation process upstream from Fenton’s oxidation, under the best operating conditions (pH 10–11 and [Fe³⁺] = 250 mg L⁻¹), also allowed to slightly increase the biodegradability (from 0.34 to 0.47) and reduce the toxicity, whereas providing a higher removal of organic matter (TOC = 76.2%, COD = 76.5 and BOD₅ = 66.3% for both processes together). Approach 1 and Approach 3 showed to be the best ones, implying similar operating costs (∼74 R$ m⁻³/∼17 € m⁻³) and constitute an attractive option for managing biodigested CPW.
