Multivariate statistical techniques are efficient ways to display complex relationships among many objects. An attempt was made to study the data of trace elements in groundwater using multivariate statistical techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA), Q-mode factor analysis and cluster analysis. The original matrix consisted of 17 trace elements estimated from 55 groundwater samples colleted in 27 wells located in a coastal area in Shenzhen, China. PCA results show that trace elements of V, Cr, As, Mo, W, and U with greatest positive loadings typically occur as soluble oxyanions in oxidizing waters, while Mn and Co with greatest negative loadings are generally more soluble within oxygen depleted groundwater. Cluster analyses demonstrate that most groundwater samples collected from the same well in the study area during summer and winter still fall into the same group. This study also demonstrates the usefulness of multivariate statistical analysis in hydrochemical studies. Multivariate statistical analysis was used to investigate relationships among trace elements and factors controlling trace element distribution in groundwater.

Residence time-dependent distribution patterns of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) among different soil organic matter fractions of three Chinese soils were investigated. Soil organic matter (SOM) was fractionated into fulvic acid (FA), humic acid (HA), bound-humic acid (BHA), lipid, and insoluble residue (IR) fractions using methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) method. Results revealed that as the residence time prolonged, the amounts of HCB and DDT in the FA, HA and BHA fractions decreased, while those in the lipid and IR fractions increased. One- and two-compartment first order, and one- and two-parameter pore-diffusion kinetic models were used to describe the mobility of HCB and DDT from the FA, HA and BHA fractions. The results suggest that excellent agreements were achieved between the experimental data and fits to the two-compartment first order kinetic model (R2 > 0.97). The transfer rates of HCB and DDT followed the order FA > HA > BHA. HCB and DDT tend to transfer from FA, HA and BHA fractions to lipid and IR fractions with increasing residence time.

During the cation exchange membrane (CEM) enhanced electrokinetic (EK) soil remediation, the nearer to the anode, the higher are the H+ concentrations and the redox potentials. As both low pH and high redox potential are helpful to speedup Cd electro-migration, soils near the anode can be quickly remedied. Usually EK process is operated with one fixed anode (FA). A novel CEM enhanced EK method with approaching anodes (AAs) is proposed to accelerate electro-migration effect. Several mesh Ti/Ru anodes were inserted as AAs in the treated soil. They were switched in turn from the anode towards the cathode. Thus high H+ ions concentrations and high redox potentials quickly migrate to the cathode. Consequently, soil remediation is accelerated and nearly 44% of energy and 40% of time can be saved. The mechanism of Cd electro-migration behavior in soils during CEM enhanced EK is described as the elution in an electrokinetically driven chromatogram. During electrokinetic remediation, the nearer to the anode, the higher are the Cd removal velocities. A novel method with approaching anodes is proposed to accelerate remediation effect.

The effect of lead on the sorption of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) on soil and peat was investigated using a batch equilibration method. Lead markedly diminished the sorption of 2,4,6-TCP, and 2,4,6-TCP had little effect on lead sorption. Peat was a more effective adsorbent for 2,4,6-TCP than soil. The desorption hysteresis of 2,4,6-TCP verified the presence of high-energy sorption sites. Mechanisms of lead suppression effect on the 2,4,6-TCP sorption included the following: Firstly, lead accelerated the aggregation of colloids, the aggregates covered the surface in part and shrunk the pore sizes of the adsorbents, hence decreased the sorption of 2,4,6-TCP. Secondly, X-ray absorption and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy study suggested that lead competed with 2,4,6-TCP for carboxylic, phenolic and Si-OH groups of organic matter and clay minerals. Such competition was partly responsible for the overall suppression effect of lead on the sorption of 2,4,6-TCP. Lead diminished the sorption of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol onto soil and peat.

Phytoremediation is an in situ, cost-effective potential strategy for cleanup of sites contaminated with trace metals. Selection of plant materials is an important factor for successful field phytoremediation. A field experiment was carried out to evaluate the phytoextraction abilities of six high biomass plants (Vertiveria zizanioides, Dianthus chinensis, Rumex K-1 (Rumex upatientia x R. timschmicus), Rumex crispus, and two populations of Rumex acetosa) in comparison to metal hyperaccumulators (Viola baoshanensis, Sedum alfredii). The paddy fields used in the experiment were contaminated with Pb, Zn, and Cd. Our results indicated that V. baoshanensis accumulated 28 mg kg-¹ Cd and S. alfredii accumulated 6,279 mg kg-¹ Zn (dry weight) in shoots, with bioconcentration factors up to 4.8 and 6.3, respectively. The resulting total extractions of V. baoshanensis and S. alfredii were 0.17 kg ha-¹ for Cd and 32.7 kg ha-¹ for Zn, respectively, with one harvest without any treatment. The phytoextraction rates of V. baoshanensis and S. alfredii for Cd and Zn were 0.88 and 1.15%, respectively. Among the high biomass plants, R. crispus extracted Zn and Cd of 26.8 and 0.16 kg ha-¹, respectively, with one harvest without any treatment, so it could be a candidate species for phytoextraction of Cd and Zn from soil. No plants were proved to have the ability to phytoextract Pb with high efficiency.

Agricultural soils high in both fluoride (F) and phosphate (P) are common due to long-term accumulation of F from multi-sources and extensive application of phosphate fertilizers. Iron (Fe) and aluminum (Al) (hydro)oxides in acidic soils serve as main geochemical sinks of both P and F, influencing their transport and bioavailability. Though sorption of P and F in their single-ion system has been extensively investigated, studies on co-sorption of F and P on soils are very limited. In this study, the batch technique was used to investigate mutual effects of F and P on their co-sorption/desorption in an acidic red soil with high contents of Fe and Al (hydro)oxides. Results indicate that, in F-P coexisting system, a decrease in pH enhances the sorption of both F and P. An increase in F concentration suppresses P sorption due to competitive effect. However, F sorption can be improved in the presence of P due to surface precipitation of (Al,Fe)-F-P. Sorption of F and P follows both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Different orders of F and P addition into the soil have no appreciable effect on P sorption, but exert significant impact on F sorption. The presence of F has no measurable effect on P desorption, while the stability of F in the presence of P can be significantly diminished in comparison with that in the absence of P, which would lead to an improvement of F mobility.

Phytoextraction is a promising technology that uses hyperaccumulating plants to remove inorganic contaminants, primarily heavy metals, from soils and waters. A field experiment was conducted to evaluate impacts of a mixture of chelators (MC) upon the growth and phytoextraction of heavy metals by the hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii Hance in a co-planting system in a paddy soil that was historically irrigated with Pb and Zn contaminated mining wastewaters. The co-planting system used in this study was comprised of a Zn- and Cd-hyperaccumulator (S. alfredii) and a low-accumulating crop (Zea mays). Results showed that yields of S. alfredii were significantly increased with the addition of the MC and by co-planting with Z. mays. Our study further revealed that concentrations of Zn, Pb, and Cd in the corn grains of Z. mays conform to the Chinese hygiene standards for animal feeds and in the other parts of Z. mays conform to the Chinese organic fertilizer standards. The uptake of Zn, Cd, and Pb by S. alfredii was significantly increased with the addition of MC. The uptake of Zn by S. alfredii was also significantly enhanced by co-planting with Z. mays, but the interaction between MC and co-planting was not significant, meaning the effects of the two types of treatments should be additive. When the MC was applied to the co-planting system in the soil contaminated with Zn, Cd, and Pb, the highest phytoextraction rates were observed. This study suggested that the use of the hyperaccumulator S. alfredii and the low-accumulating crop Z. mays in the co-planting system with the addition of the MC was a more promising approach than the use of a single hyperaccumulator with the assistance of EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid). This approach not only enhances the phytoextraction rates of the heavy metals but also simultaneously allows agricultural practices with safe feed products in the metal-contaminated soils.

The dynamics of macroalgal communities and the impact of sewage on their growth were studied in the tidal zone around Zhanqiao Pier of the Qingdao coastal area, in the northwest of the Yellow Sea, China, from September 2001 to September 2003. The tidal zone of the study area is divided into western and eastern sections by the Zhanqiao Pier. Inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus in seawater showed higher concentrations on the eastern side of Zhanqiao Pier than on the western side, because a sewer drains into the eastern side. The macroalgal communities on each side of the Pier showed an obvious difference due to the effect of this sewage discharge. A total of 47 macroalgal species including 10 greens, 11 browns and 26 reds was identified in this study. The species composition and biomass indicated higher values in the nutrient-rich area on the eastern side of Zhanqiao Pier compared with the nutrient-poor area on the western side of Zhanqiao Pier. Some ephemeral and filamentous species dominated seasonally on the eastern side of Zhanqiao Pier, in contrast to the western side where slow-growing species dominated throughout the year. Nutrient gradients and temperature were considered the main factors affecting the distribution of macroalgae communities in time and space. The results are consistent with the common observation that nutrient-poor areas are dominated by slow-growing rather than ephemeral algal species. Moreover, the species diversity in the whole study area had declined when compared to previous records.

We used laboratory experiments to investigate surface resistance (R c) to dry deposition of ozone (O₃) on different types of soil samples collected from the arid deserts and the Loess Plateau of northern China. Furthermore, we measured the factors that affected R c, which depends on the physical and chemical interaction between trace constituents and the deposition surface, and evaluated deposition velocity (V d). There was little influence of geometric surface area, soil weight, or O₃ concentration on V d of O₃. The effect of relative humidity (RH) (i.e. moisture content of the soil) on O₃ uptake was in agreement with results reported in the literature: a distinct RH dependence of V d and little uptake under water-saturated conditions were observed. R c values for all the soil samples examined were in the range 0.21-3.3 s mm-¹ and were exponentially related to the surface area of the particles and the organic carbon content of each soil sample at RH of both <10 and 60%.

The sorption of hydrophobic organic pollutants on soils or sediments has been widely studied. However, more attention in the previous studies has been paid to sorption mechanism and effects of relevant environmental factors, few studies were reported on effects of heavy metals on the sorption of hydrophobic organic pollutants. In this paper, sorption of phthalate esters (diethyl phthalate, DEP, and di-n-butyl phthalate, DnBP) and copper on the Yellow River sediment was investigated with particular attention to the effects of copper on the phthalate sorption. The experimental results show that the sorption isotherms of phthalates could be reasonably described by the Freundlich equation. Higher sorption equilibrium constant was obtained for DnBP due to its greater hydrophobicity. The existence of copper would enhance the sorption of DnBP. Moreover, strong sorption of copper to sediment were found and attributed to abundant carbonates in the Yellow River sediment. After carbonates were removed, notable effects of copper on the phthalate sorption were observed due to the decrease of copper sorption and the increase of aqueous copper concentration. With 153 mg l-¹ copper added, the partition coefficient decreases by 52% for DEP and increases by 79% for DnBP. Primary factors that may influence interaction between the sorption of copper and DEP and DnBP were also investigated, such as complexation between copper and phthalate, and phthalate hydrophobicity. The complexation between phthalate esters and copper was substantiated by polarogram and fluorescence spectrograph, and the calculated mol ratio of complexation (copper : phthalate) was found to be 2:1.
