Source apportionment can be an effective tool in mitigating soil pollution but its efficacy is often limited by a lack of information on the factors that influence the accumulation of pollutants at a site. In response to this limitation and focusing on a suite of heavy metals identified as priorities for pollution control, the study established a comprehensive pollution control framework using factor identification coupled with spatial agglomeration for agricultural soils in an industrialized part of Zhejiang Province, China. In addition to elucidating the key role of industrial and traffic activities on heavy metal accumulation through implementing a receptor model, specific influencing factors were identified using a random forest model. The distance from the soil sample location to the nearest likely industrial source was the most important factor in determining cadmium and copper concentrations, while distance to the nearest road was more important for lead and zinc pollution. Soil parent materials, pH, organic matter, and clay particle size were the key factors influencing accumulation of arsenic, chromium, and nickel. Spatial auto-correlation between levels of soil metal pollution and industrial agglomeration can enable a more targeted approach to pollution control measures. Overall, the approach and results provide a basis for improved accuracy in source apportionment, and thus improved soil pollution control, at the regional scale.

Antarctic melt streams are important ecosystems that increasingly face contaminant pressures from anthropogenic sources. Metal contaminants are often reported in the limno-terrestrial environment but their speciation is not well characterised, making environmental risk assessments difficult. This paper characterises labile metal concentrations in five melt streams and three shallow lakes around the Casey and Wilkes research stations in East Antarctica using chemical extracts and field deployments of diffusive gradients in thin-film (DGT) samplers. An acute toxicity test with field-collected Ceratadon purpeus and taxonomic identification of diatoms in melt streams were used to infer environmental risk. Copper and zinc were the most labile metals in the melt streams. DGT-labile copper concentrations were up to 3 μg Cu L⁻¹ in melt-stream waters but not labile below the sediment-water interface. DGT-labile zinc concentrations were consistent above and below the sediment-water interface at concentrations up to 14 μg Zn L⁻¹ in four streams, but one stream showed evidence of zinc mineralisation in the sediment with a flux to overlying and pore waters attributed to the reductive dissolution of iron and manganese oxides. Other metals, such as chromium, nickel, and lead were acid-extractable from the sediments, but not labile in pore waters or overlying waters. All streams had unique compositions of freshwater diatoms, but one had particularly reduced diversity and richness, which correlated to metal contamination and sediment physico-chemical properties such as a finer particle size. In laboratory bioassays with field-collected samples of the Antarctic moss C. purpeus, there was no change in photosynthetic efficiency following 28-d exposure to 700, 900, 1060, or 530 μg L⁻¹ of cadmium, copper, nickel, and zinc, respectively. This study shows that microorganisms such as diatoms may be at greater risk from contaminants than mosses, and highlights the importance of geochemical factors controlling metal lability.

The Pearl River Estuary (PRE) is the largest estuary in southern China and under high metal stress. In the present study, we employed an integrated method of transcriptomics and proteomics to investigate the ecotoxicological effects of trace metals on the Hong Kong oyster Crassostrea hongkongensis. Three oyster populations with distinct spatial distributions of metals were sampled, including the Control (Station QA, the lowest metal levels), the High Cd (Station JZ, the highest Cd), and the High Zn–Cu–Cr–Ni (Station LFS, with the highest levels of zinc, copper, chromium, and nickel). Dominant metals in oysters were differentiated by principal component analysis (PCA), and theirgene and protein profiles were studied using RNA-seq and iTRAQ techniques. Of the 2250 proteins identified at both protein and RNA levels, 70 proteins exhibited differential expressions in response to metal stress in oysters from the two contaminated stations. There were 8 proteins altered at both stations, with the potential effects on mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum by Ag. The genotoxicity, including impaired DNA replication and transcription, was specifically observed in the High Cd oysters with the dominating influence of Cd. The structural components (cytoskeleton and chromosome-associated proteins) were impaired by the over-accumulated Cu, Zn, Cr, and Ni at Station LFS. However, enhanced tRNA biogenesis and exosome activity might help the oysters to alleviate the toxicities resulting from their exposure to these metals. Our study provided comprehensive information on the molecular changes in oysters at both protein and RNA levels in responding to multi-levels of trace metal stress.

Studies of the association between prenatal exposure to metal elements and risk for neural tube defects (NTDs) have produced inconsistent results. Little research has examined the joint effects and interactions of multiple elements. This study examined 273 women with NTD-affected pregnancies and 477 controls. Cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, mercury, manganese, molybdenum, lead, and zinc were quantified in maternal serum. Single and mixed effects of these elements on NTD risk were evaluated with Bayesian kernel machine regression, and the effects of individual elements were validated using logistic regression. As a result, NTD risk increased with the concentration of the mixture of the 10 elements. NTD risk rose as the levels of the five toxic elements increased, with effect sizes larger than the overall analyses, but they decreased, albeit non-significantly, as the levels of the five essential elements increased. Lead and manganese showed risk effects on NTDs, with odds ratios (ORs) of 1.94 (1.76–2.13) and 1.25 (1.14–1.38), respectively, with the remaining nine elements remaining at their median. Molybdenum showed a protective effect against NTDs with an OR 0.87 (0.90–0.94). The single-element results were validated using logistic regression. In conclusion, NTD risk increased with concentrations of the five toxic elements, with lead and manganese being the major contributors. Essential elements showed protective effects against NTD risk.

Accumulation of metals by plants is an important area of investigation in plant ecology and evolution as well as in soil contamination/phytoremediation practices. This paper reports that hormetic-biphasic dose-response relationships were commonly observed for multiple agents (i.e. arsenic, cadmium, chromium, fluoride, lead, and zinc) and 20 species in plant (hyper)accumulator studies. The hormetic stimulation was related to metal accumulation in affected tissues, with the metal stimulation concentration zone unique for each metal, species, tissue, and endpoint studied. However, quantitative features of the hormetic dose response were similar across all (hyper)accumulation studies, with results independent of plant species, endpoints measured, and metal. The dose-dependent stimulatory and inhibitory/toxic plant responses were often associated with the up- and down-regulation of adaptive mechanisms, especially those involving anti-oxidative enzymatic processes. These findings provide a mechanistic framework to account for both the qualitative and quantitative features of the hormetic dose response in plant (hyper)accumulator studies.

The co-existence of heavy metals and organic compounds including Cr(VI) and p-cresol (pC) in water environment becoming a challenge in the treatment processes. Herein, the synchronous photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) and oxidation of pC by silver oxide decorated on fibrous silica zirconia (AgO/FSZr) was reported. In this study, the catalysts were successfully developed using microemulsion and electrochemical techniques with various AgO loading (1, 5 and 10 wt%) and presented as 1, 5 and 10-AgO/FSZr. Catalytic activity was tested towards simultaneous photoredox of hexavalent chromium and p-cresol (Cr(VI)/pC) and was ranked as followed: 5-AgO/FSZr (96/78%) > 10-AgO/FSZr (87/61%) > 1-AgO/FSZr (47/24%) > FSZr (34/20%). The highest photocatalytic activity of 5-AgO/FSZr was established due to the strong interaction between FSZr and AgO and the lowest band gap energy, which resulted in less electron-hole recombination and further enhanced the photoredox activity. Cr(VI) ions act as a bridge between the positive charge of catalyst and cationic pC in pH 1 solution which can improve the photocatalytic reduction and oxidation of Cr(VI) and pC, respectively. The scavenger experiments further confirmed that the photogenerated electrons (e⁻) act as the main species for Cr(VI) to be reduced to Cr(III) while holes (h⁺) and hydroxyl radicals are domain for photooxidation of pC. The 5-AgO/FSZr was stable after 5 cycles of reaction, suggesting its potential for removal of Cr(VI) and pC simultaneously in the chemical industries.

The effects of algae on the removal of contaminant by iron sulfide (FeS) are still unknown. Chlorella vulgaris (CV), a remarkable algal specie, was used to prepare the CV-supported FeS (CV-FeS) and to investigate the role that CV plays in the removal of a heavy metal (i.e., hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) by FeS. The stabilized effect from algal extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) enhanced the reactivity of FeS due to the decrease of FeS aggregation, thus increasing Cr(VI) removal rate from 0.21 min⁻¹ to 0.79 min⁻¹. Furthermore, the strong buffering induced by the algal functional groups could effectively prevent the solution pH from increasing, which improved Cr(VI) removal because acidic solution facilitated Cr(VI) reduction by FeS. However, the complexing capacity from algal EPS made Fe(II) unavailable for Cr(VI) reduction, which led to 35% decrease of Cr(VI) removal. The Fe(II) was oxidized to α-FeOOH by Cr(VI) in the absence of CV, while the unreacted Fe(II) was detected as in the form of Fe(OH)₂ in CV-FeS. Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) and S(-II) was oxidized to elemental sulfur (S₈) regardless of the CV. This work showed the different roles of algae in the removal of Cr(VI) by FeS and provided value information for the application of FeS in the polluted algae-containing water system.

The wide range of industrial applications of chromium (Cr) has led to an increasing risk of water contamination by Cr(Ⅵ). However, efficient methods to remove or decrease the toxicity of Cr(Ⅵ) in situ are lacking. The main aim of this study was to investigate the mechanisms by which selenite alleviates chromium(Ⅵ)-induced toxicity in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Our results showed that K₂Cr₂O₇ had toxic effects on both the structure and physiology of C. reinhardtii in a dose-dependent manner. Adding selenite significantly alleviated chromium accumulation and toxicity in cells. RNA-seq data showed that the expression level of selenoproteins such as SELENOH was significantly increased. Both SELENOH-amiRNA knockdown mutants and selenoh insertional mutant produced more reactive oxygen species (ROS) and grew slower than the wild type, suggesting that SELENOH can reduce chromium toxicity by decreasing the levels of ROS produced by Cr(Ⅵ). We also demonstrated that selenite can reduce the absorption of Cr(Ⅵ) by cells but does not affect the process of Cr(Ⅵ) adsorption and efflux. This information on the molecular mechanism by which selenite alleviates Cr(Ⅵ) toxicity can be used to increase the bioremediation capacity of algae and reduce the human health risks associated with Cr(Ⅵ) toxicity.

Heavy metal pollution is becoming recurrent and threatens biota biosafety in many agricultural fields. Diverse solutions explore the application of amendments to enable remediation. Sulfur represents a nonmetallic chemical element that actively affects heavy metals phytoextraction, and promotes and alternatively mitigates soil functions. In this study, we conduct a meta-analysis to synthesize the current knowledge on the influence of sulfur amendments on plants heavy metals uptake from contaminated soil media. Random-effects model was used to summarize effect sizes from 524 data points extracted from 30 peer reviewed studies. The phytoextraction of cadmium, chromium and nickel were 1.6-, 3.3-, and 12.6-fold, respectively, higher when sulfur amendment was applied; while copper uptake was 0.3-fold lower. Irrespective of the sulfur type, heavy metal extraction increased with the raising sulfur stress. Individual organs showed significant differences of heavy metal uptake between sulfur applied and non-sulfur treatments, and combined organs did not. The heavy metals uptake in leaves and roots were higher in sulfur applied than non-sulfur applied treatments, while those in grain, husk, and stalks were lower. The heavy metals phytoextraction (response ratio) followed the order roots > leaves > stalk > grain > husk. Moreover, heavy metals uptake was 2-fold higher in the sulfur applied than the non-sulfur treatments under ideal (5.5–8) and alkaline conditions (8–14), and 0.2-fold lower under acidic pH (1–5.5). Cadmium, manganese and nickel, and chromium were the most extracted under sulfur application by Vicia sp., Sorghum sp. and Brassica sp., respectively; while chromium, manganese, and iron were the most uptake without sulfur amendments by Oryza sp., Zea sp. and Sorghum sp., respectively. Our study highlights that the influence of sulfur on heavy metal phytoextraction depends on the single or combined effects of sulfur stress intensity, sulfur compounds, plant organ, plant type, and soil pH condition.

Metallurgical industries remain a considerable source of trace element contamination and potential human health risk. Determination of sources is a key challenge. With respect to the South Pacific's largest and longest operating metallurgic smelter in Nouméa, New Caledonia, determining the environmental impact and subsequent human health risk associated with local ferronickel smelting is complicated by natural geological enrichment of Ni and Cr. This study applies a multi-method and multi-matrix approach to disentangle smelter emissions from geogenic sources and model the consequent health risk from industrial activity. Dust wipes (n = 108), roadside soil (n = 91), garden soil (n = 15) and household vacuum dust (n = 39) were assessed to explore geospatial trace element (As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, S, V and Zn) variations across outdoor and indoor environments. Enrichment factors (EF) identified elevated levels of smelter-related trace elements: S (EF = 7), Ni (EF = 6) and Cr (EF = 4), as well as Zn (EF = 4). Smelter-related elements in soil and dust deposits were negatively correlated with distance from the facility. Similarity of Pb isotopic compositions between dust wipes, surface soil and vacuum dust indicated that potentially toxic trace elements are being tracked into homes. Non-carcinogenic health risk modelling (Hazard Index, HI) based on 15 spatial nodes across Nouméa revealed widespread exceedance of tolerable risk for children (0–2 years) for Ni (HI 1.3–15.8) and Mn (HI 0.6–1.8). Risk was greatest near the smelter and to the north-west, in the direction of prevailing wind. Given the elevated cancer risk documented in New Caledonia, disentanglement of environmental from industrial sources warrants further attention to ensure community health protection. Our analysis illustrates how the confounding effects from complex environmental factors can be distilled to improve the accuracy of point source apportionment to direct future mitigation strategies.
