Soils have the ability to modify contaminant bioavailability and toxicity. Prediction the modifying effect of soil on arsenic phytoaccumulation and phytoavailability using either soil property data or soil chemical extraction data in risk assessment of contaminated soil is highly desirable. In this study, plant bioassays important to ecological receptors, were conducted with 20 soils with a wide range in chemical and physical soil properties to determine the relationships between As measured by soil chemical extraction (soil pore water, Bray-1, sodium phosphate solution, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, and acid ammonium oxalate) or soil physico/chemical properties on arsenic phytotoxicity and phytoaccumulation. Soil pore water As and Bray-1 extracted As were significantly (P < 0.01) correlated with lettuce tissue As and those extractants and sodium phosphate were correlated with ryegrass tissue As. Hydroxylamine and acid ammonium oxalate extractions did not correlate with plant bioassay endpoints. Simple regression results showed that lettuce tissue relative dry matter growth (RDMG) was inversely related to tissue As concentration (r² = 0.85, P < 0.01), with no significant relationship for ryegrass. Soil clay exhibited strong adsorption for As and significantly reduce tissue As for lettuce and ryegrass. In addition to clay content, reactive aluminum oxide (AlOx), reactive Fe oxide (FeOx) and eCEC was inversely related to ryegrass tissue As. Multiple regression equation was strongly predictive (r² = 0.83) for ryegrass tissue As (log transformed) using soil AlOx, organic matter, pH, and eCEC as variables. Soil properties can greatly reduce contaminant phytoavailability, plant exposure and risk, which should be considered when assessing contaminant exposure and site-specific risk in As-contaminated soils.

Southwestern China contains the largest and most well-developed karst region in the world, and the potentially toxic elements (PTEs) content in the soils of the region is remarkably high. To explore the internal and external control factors and sources of soil PTEs enrichment in this area and to provide a basis for the treatment of PTE pollution, 113 soil samples were collected from Hengxian County, a karst region in Guangxi Province, southwestern China. The importance of eighteen influencing factors including parent material, weathering, physicochemical properties, topography and human activities were quantitatively analyzed by (partial) redundancy analysis. The sources of PTEs were identified using the Pb isotope ratio and absolute principal component score/multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model. The contents of all soil PTEs were higher than the corresponding background values of Guangxi soils. The contents in Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg and Pb were the highest in the soil from carbonate rock. The factor group of geological background and weathering explained 26.5% for the accumulation and distribution of soil PTEs and the influence of physicochemical properties was less than 2% but increased to 25.6% through interaction with weathering. Fe (47.1%), Al (42.1%), Mn (22%), chemical index of alteration (12.8%) and clay (11.9%) were the key factors affecting the soil PTEs, while the influence of human activities was weak. Pb isotope ratio and APCS-MLR classified 62.8–74% of soil PTEs as derived from natural sources, whereas 18.23% and 18.95% were derived from industrial activities and agricultural practice/traffic emissions, respectively. The Pb isotope ratio showed that the natural sources account for up to 90% of the Pb in the soil from carbonate rock, the highest contribution among the studied soils. The results of the study can provide background information on the soil PTEs contamination in the karst areas of China and other areas worldwide.

Pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) have attracted increasing attention due to their large consumption volumes, high bioactivity and potential ecotoxicity. In this study, a total of 150 commonly used drugs were investigated in sediments of Jiaozhou Bay (JZB). Twenty-five target compounds were detected, of which ten were discovered for the first time in marine sediments. The range of total PhAC content was 3.62–21.4 ng/g dry weight. Ketoprofen (2.49 ng/g), oxytetracycline (1.00 ng/g) and roxithromycin (0.97 ng/g) were the preponderant PhACs. PhACs gradually decreased from east to west, and the distribution of PhACs in the sediment was controlled by the source channel, seawater dynamic process and sediment composition. The diatom, organic matter, and clay proportions in the sediments and the nutrients in the overlying water were the most important environmental factors affecting the distribution of PhACs. PhAC pollution in the sediments of the JZB exhibited an increasing trend. Coprostanol could be used as a chemical indicator of the PhAC concentration in JZB sediments. PhACs were mainly derived from direct pollution due to human fecal excretion in the eastern region. Ofloxacin, tetracycline and oxytetracycline were found to pose high or medium risks to aquatic organisms. It is necessary and urgent to improve the treatment technology of drug residues in sewage treatment plants to decrease the pollution of PhAC residues. With the continuous aging of the global population, the use of PhACs will increase rapidly, which may cause more unpredictable threats to the marine ecosystem. Therefore, the monitoring of PhACs in the marine environment needs to be strengthened, and studies on PhAC occurrence and effects must be considered a priority in global environmental research.

Natural media such as soil and sediment contain mineralogical and organic components with distinct chemical, surface, and electrostatic properties. To better understand the role of various soil and sediment components on particle transport, columns were packed with quartz sand and natural sediment with added Fe oxyhydroxide coating, illite clay, and peat moss to investigate how these added components influence nTiO₂ retention and transport in geochemically heterogeneous medium. Results showed that nTiO₂ transport was low at pH 5, attributable to the electrostatic attraction between positively-charged nTiO₂ and negatively-charged medium. While illite did not notably affect nTiO₂ transport at pH 5, Fe oxyhydroxide coating increased nTiO₂ transport due to electrostatic repulsion between Fe oxyhydroxide and nTiO₂. Peat moss also increased nTiO₂ transport at pH 5, attributable to the increased DOC concentration, which resulted in higher DOC adsorption to nTiO₂ and intensified electrostatic repulsion between nTiO₂ and the medium. At pH 9, nTiO₂ transport was high due to the electrostatic repulsion between negatively-charged nTiO₂ and medium surfaces. Fe oxyhydroxide coating at pH 9 slightly delayed nTiO₂ transport due to electrostatic attraction, while illite clay and peat moss substantially inhibited nTiO₂ transport via straining/entrapment or electrostatic attraction. Overall, this study demonstrated that pH has a considerable effect on how minerals and organic components of a medium influence nTiO₂ transport. At low pH, electrostatic attraction was the dominant mechanism, therefore, nTiO₂ mobility was low regardless of the differences in mineralogical and organic components. Conversely, nTiO₂ mobility was high at high pH and nTiO₂ retention was dominated by straining/entrapment and sensitive to the mineralogical and organic composition of the medium.

This work has been conducted as an integrated approach to study the behavior of soils to the metals from sludge amendment. Bureau Commun Reference (BCR) methodology was used as an appropriate tool to harvest precious information about heavy metals evolution versus depth before and after sludge treatments. This three-step extraction procedure (i.e., BCR) may clarify the leaching or retention of heavy metals from the amended soils, as well as their risk level. Our results indicated that sludge applications has shown an increasing flux of heavy metals towards amended soils, of which Pb was the most abundant. Heavy metals mobility in control and amended soils showed that main influencing factors are pH and total organic carbon, especially for copper mobility. Almost all of the metals decreased with soil depth, except for Ni. Speciation of heavy metals in sludges showed that about 45% of Pb, Cu and Ni were associated with residual fraction; Cd was mainly bound to reducible fraction. Speciation forms in the control soil indicated that short term application of sludge has remobilized a fraction of heavy metals into their most labile forms (i.e., exchangeable and reducible fraction). Multivariate statistical analysis suggested that Cd, Zn, Pb and Cu preferentially accumulated in organic-rich surface horizons and clay layers where adsorption played an important role as a determining mechanism. Nevertheless, adsorption did not appear to be directly controlled by high pH values (pH > 7). From Cluster Analysis (CA), one can easily recognize that Pb, Zn and Cu movement in soil profiles were significantly affected by pH, especially residual fraction, labile fraction and reducible fraction.

Fluoxastrobin is one of the most widely used strobilurin fungicides, however, application of the fungicides may result in soil residues leading to environmental damage including oxidative stress and damage to sentinel organisms (i.e. earthworms). While this has been demonstrated in artificial soil, the biochemical response of Eisenia fetida exposed to fluoxastrobin in natural soils is unclear. This study utilized three typical natural soils (fluvo-aquic soils, red clay, and black soils) to evaluate the biochemical response of Eisenia fetida exposed to fluoxastrobin (0.1, 1.0, 2.5 mg/kg) including the production of reactive oxygen species, impact on three enzyme activities, lipid peroxidation, and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine after a 4-week exposure. The effects of fluoxastrobin on Eisenia fetida in different soils were assessed using an integrated biomarker response (IBR). The findings may be possible to state that the toxic effects of fluoxastrobin in artificial cannot exactly represent that in natural soils. Specifically, the fluoxastrobin subchronic toxicity was highest in red clay and lowest in black soil among the three natural soils. Furthermore, the 8-OHdG content was more sensitive to fluoxastrobin in all six environmental indicators of the present study.

The wide utilization of plastic related products leads to the ubiquitous presence of plastic particles in natural environments. Plastic particles could interact with kaolinite (one type of typical clay particles abundant in environments) and form plastic-kaolinite heteroaggregates. The fate and transport of both plastic particles and kaolinite particles thus might be altered. The cotransport and deposition behaviors of micron-sized plastic particles (MPs) with different surface charge (both negative and positive surface charge) with kaolinite in porous media in both 5 and 25 mM NaCl solutions were investigated in present study. Both types of MPs (negatively charged carboxylate-modified MPs (CMPs) and positively charged amine-modified MPs (AMPs)) formed heteroaggregates with kaolinite particles under both solution conditions examined, however, CMPs and AMPs exhibited different cotransport behaviors with kaolinite. Specifically, the transport of both CMPs and kaolinite was increased under both ionic strength conditions when kaolinite and CMPs were copresent in suspensions. While, when kaolinite and positively charged AMPs were copresent in suspensions, negligible transport of both kaolinite and AMPs were observed under examined salt solution conditions. The competition deposition sites by kaolinite (the portion suspending in solution) with CMPs-kaolinite heteroaggregates led to the increased transport both CMPs and kaolinite when both types of colloids were copresent. In contrast, the formation of larger sized AMPs-kaolinite heteroaggregates with surface charge heterogeneity led to the negligible transport of both kaolinite and AMPs when they were copresent in suspensions. The results of this study show that when plastic particles and kaolinite particles are copresent in natural environments, their interaction with each other will affect their transport behaviors in porous media. The alteration in the transport of MPs or kaolinite (either increased or decreased transport) is highly correlated with the surface charge of MPs.

Tetracyclines (TCs) are frequently detected in agricultural soils worldwide, causing a potential threat to crops and human health. In this study, diffusive gradients in thin films technique (DGT) was used to measure the distribution and exchange rates of three TCs (tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and chlortetracycline (CTC)) between the solid phase and solution in five farmland soils. The relationship between the accumulated masses with time suggested that TCs consumption in soil solution by DGT would induce the supply from the soil solid phase. The distribution coefficient for the labile antibiotics (Kdl), response time (Tc) and desorption/adsorption rates (kb and kf) between dissolved and sorbed TCs were derived from the dynamic model of DIFS (DGT induced fluxes in soils). The Kdl showed similar sizes of labile solid phase pools for TC and OTC while larger pool sizes were observed for CTC in the soils. Although the concentrations of CTC were lowest in soil solution, the potential hazard caused by continuous release from soil particles could not be ignored. The long response time (>30 min in most cases) suggested that the resupply of TCs from soil solids was limited by their desorption rates (1.26-121 × 10−6 s−1). The soils in finer texture, with higher clay and silt contents (<50 μm) showed a greater potential for TCs release.

Condensed organic matters (COM) with black carbon-like structures are considered as long-term carbon sinks because of their high stability. It is difficult to distinguish COM from general organic matter by conventional chemical analysis, thus the contribution by and interaction mechanisms of organo-mineral complexes in COM stabilization are unclear and generally neglected. Molecular markers related to black carbon-like structures, such as benzene polycarboxylic acids (BPCAs), are promising tools for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of COM. In this study, one natural soil and two cultivated soils with 25 y- or 55 y-tillage activities were collected and the distribution characteristics of BPCAs were detected. All the investigated soils showed similar BPCA distribution pattern, and over 60% of BPCAs were detected in clay fraction. The extractable BPCA contents were substantially increased after mineral removal. The ratios of BPCA contents before and after mineral removal indicate the extent of COM-mineral particle interactions, and our results suggested that up to 73% COM were protected by mineral particles, and more stronger interactions were noted on clay than on silt. The initial cultivation dramatically decreased COM-clay interactions, and this interaction was recovered only slowly after 55-y cultivation. Kaolinite and muscovite are important for COM protection. But a possible negative correlation between BPCAs and reactive iron oxides of the cultivated soils suggested that iron may promote COM degradation when disturbed by tillage activities. This study provided a new angle to study the stabilization of COM and emphasized the importance of organo-mineral complexes for COM stabilization.

Multi-layered engineered landfill consists of the bottom liner layer (mainly bentonite clay (B)) upon which the hazardous wastes are dumped. In current practice, sand (S) is mixed with bentonite to mitigate the adverse effects of using bentonite alone in the liner layer. Incorporation of waste and unutilized fly ash (FA) as an amendment material to B has been explored in terms of its hydro-mechanical properties, but not gauged its adsorption potential. Indian subcontinent primarily relies on the thermal power source, and FA dumps have already reached its full capacity. The objective of this study is to explore the adsorption characteristics of four B-FA composite mixes sourced within India, considering Pb²⁺ as a model contaminant. The effect of fly ash type, fly ash amendment rate and adsorbate concentration was explored in the current study and juxtaposed with B-S mixes, based on 960 batch adsorption tests. Both B-FA and B-S mixes reached equilibrium adsorption capacity within 65 min. At higher adsorbate concentrations (commonly observed in the liner), B-FA mixes exhibited superior adsorption capacity, mainly one mixed with Neyvelli fly ash (NFA). The effect of higher amendment rate had little impact on the adsorption capacity at different concentration, but gradually decreased the percentage removal of Pb²⁺. The B-S mix showed a drastic decrease in percentage removal at higher adsorbate concentration among all tested mixes. Systematic characterization including geotechnical properties, microstructure and chemical analysis was also done to interpret the obtained results. Both Freundlich and Langmuir models fitted the isotherm data well for all B-FA mixes. The maximum adsorption capacity from the isotherm was correlated to easily measurable Atterberg limits by two empirical relationships.
