Marine litter is widely distributed in marine environments and has been a severe concern worldwide, due to the disposal of waste from diverse sources. The severity of this threat has garnered increasing attention in India over the last decade, but the full consequences of this pollution are yet to be quantified. To estimate the spatiotemporal distribution, composition and beach quality of marine litter pollution, 17 beaches along the Hooghly estuary, a part of the Gangetic delta was studied. Marine litter was collected from 100 m long transects during two seasons (monsoon and post-monsoon). The OSPAR monitoring standard was applied to the 16,597 litter items collected, then grouped under 6 types and 44 categories. In terms of number, litter abundance was higher during monsoon (1.10 ± 0.39 items/m²) than that of post-monsoon (0.86 ± 0.32 items/m²). Most of the beaches were categorized as low cleanliness as computed by the general index and clean coast index and the good for the pellet pollution index. Hazardous litter constituted 6.5% of the total collected litter items. The model prediction revealed that the influence of high discharge from Hooghly, Rasulpur and Subarnarekha River carried enormous anthropogenic litter to the northeast beaches. The litter flux decreases with an increase in distance from the shore, and act as a sink to the sea-floor. The results denote that the distribution and typology of marine litter were representatives of household, tourism and fishing, which in turn highlights the need for better regional litter management measures. Suggested management practices include source reduction, mitigation, management of beach environment and change in littering behaviour through environmental education.

A monitoring network was established in streams within a catchment near the Costa Rican Pacific coast (2008–2011) to estimate the impact of pesticides in surface water (84 samples) and sediments (84 samples) in areas under the influence of melon and watermelon production. A total of 66 (water) and 47 (sediment) pesticides were analyzed, and an environmental risk assessment (ERA) was performed for four taxa (algae, Daphnia magna, fish and Chironomus riparius). One fungicide and seven insecticides were detected in water and/or sediment; the fungicide azoxystrobin (water) and the insecticide cypermethrin (sediments) were the most frequently detected pesticides. The insecticides endosulfan (5.76 μg/L) and cypermethrin (301 μg/kg) presented the highest concentrations in water and sediment, respectively. The ERA revealed acute risk in half of the sampling points of the melon-influenced area and in every sampling point from the watermelon-influenced area. Safety levels were exceeded within and around the crop fields, suggesting that agrochemical contamination was distributed along the catchment, with potential influence of nearby crops. Acute risk was caused by the insecticides chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin and endosulfan to D. magna, fish and C. riparius; the latter was the organism with the overall highest/continuous risk. High chronic risk was determined in all but one sampling point, and revealed a higher number of pesticides of concern. Cypermethrin was the only pesticide to pose chronic risk for all benchmark organisms. The results provide new information on the risk that tropical crops pose to aquatic ecosystems, and highlight the importance of including the analysis of sediment concentrations and chronic exposure in ERA.

Emerging per-/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), such as chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonates (Cl-PFESAs), have been detected in human samples, yet investigation on their occurrence in pregnant women remains limited. Herein, ten legacy PFASs, branched perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), two Cl-PFESAs, perfluoro-2-propoxypropanoic acid (HFPO-DA), and ammonium 4,8-dioxa-3H-perfluorononanoate (ADONA) were detected in serum samples from 480 pregnant women in Tianjin, China. The influencing effects of age, body mass index, gravidity, and parity were also evaluated. PFOS [geographic mean (GM): 7.05 ng/mL], 6:2Cl-PFESA (GM: 5.31 ng/mL), and PFOA (GM: 2.82 ng/mL) were the dominant PFASs in the serum of pregnant women, while neither HFPO-DA nor ADONA was detectable in any serum. The serum concentration of Cl-PFESAs and 6:2Cl-PFESA/PFOS ratio in the present study were 2–5 times higher than that in previous studies of pregnant women in China. Serum concentrations of Cl-PFESAs were significantly correlated with all detected PFAAs (Spearman’s Rho: 0.15–0.69, p < 0.01) excepting perfluoropentanesulfonate (PFPeS), indicating common exposure sources for Cl-PFESAs and PFAAs and some particular exposure source for PFPeS. Younger age and multi-parity were associated with lower serum concentrations of PFOS and several perfluoroalkyl sulfonates but not associated with Cl-PFESAs or PFOA, suggesting an increasing exposure to Cl-PFESAs and PFOA which neutralized the impact of age and parity. Overall, this study indicated a relatively high exposure level and composition of 6:2Cl-PFESA in pregnant women in the north coast of China, which highlights the need to investigate the exposure sources in this area.

Oil spills can result in changes in chemical concentrations along coastlines. In prior work, these concentration changes were used to evaluate the date sediment was impacted by oil (i.e., oil exposure date). The objective of the current study was to build upon prior work by using the oil exposure date to compute oil spill chemical (OSC) concentrations in shoreline sediments before and after exposure. The new method was applied to OSC concentration measures collected during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill with an emphasis on evaluating before and after concentrations in muddy versus sandy regions. The procedure defined a grid that overlaid coastal areas with chemical concentration measurement locations. These grids were then aggregated into clusters to allow the assignment of chemical concentration measurements to a uniform coastal type. Performance of the method was illustrated for ten chemicals individually by cluster, and collectively for all chemicals and all clusters. Results show statistically significant differences between chemical concentrations before and after the calculated oil exposure dates (p < 0.04 for each of the 10 chemicals within the identified clusters). When aggregating all chemical measures collectively across all clusters, chemical concentrations were lower before oil exposure in comparison to after (p < 0.0001). Sandy coastlines exhibited lower chemical concentrations relative to muddy coastlines (p < 0.0001). Overall, the method developed is a useful first step for establishing baseline chemical concentrations and for assessing the impacts of disasters on sediment quality within different coastline types. Results may be also useful for assessing added ecological and human health risks associated with oil spills.

140 contaminants belonging to various classes (organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides, pyrethroid insecticides, carbamates, fungicides, acaricides, herbicides, synergists, insect growth regulators, polychlorobiphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) were simultaneously analysed by GC-MS/MS in marine sediments, aquatic plant leaves and fish tissues samples. A total of 260 samples from five stations along the coast of Tunisia were evaluated. The results highlight that only 28 residues (12 polychlorobiphenyls, 8 organochlorine pesticides, 7 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and triphenyl phosphate) were detected at levels higher than relative LOQ values. The amounts in sediment samples were compared with Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs) showing that the values are acceptable and no toxic effect is expected on aquatic organisms. A little variation of contaminant residues in sediment samples among coastal stations was recorded. Namely, with respect to almost all polychlorobiphenyls and organochlorine pesticides, higher values were recorder in summer. With respect to almost all polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, higher values were recorder in autumn. Aquatic plant leaves showed a residue accumulation higher than that of other compartments of marine system. The data about fish samples (Sparus aurata and Sarpa salpa, the two most frequently caught fish species at five sites on the central coast of Tunisia) do not pose direct hazard to human health because values were lower than protection limits.

Declining emissions of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), subject to international control under the Stockholm convention, are not consistently reflected in biotic samples. To assess spatial and temporal variation in organochlorine pesticides and PCBs in UK freshwaters, we analysed tissues of a sentinel predator, the Eurasian otter, Lutra lutra between 1992 and 2009. Past declines in otter populations have been linked to POPs and it is unclear whether otter recovery is hampered in any areas by their persistence. PCBs, DDT (and derivatives), dieldrin and HCB were detected in over 80% of 755 otter livers sampled. Concentrations of ∑PCB, ∑DDT and dieldrin in otter livers declined across the UK, but there was no significant time trend for ∑PCB-TEQ (WHO toxic equivalency, Van den Berg et al., 2006) or HCB. In general, higher concentrations were found in the midlands and eastern regions, and lowest concentrations in western regions. Concentrations of PCBs and HCB in otters increased near the coast, potentially reflecting higher pollutant levels in estuarine systems. Decades after legislative controls, concentrations of these legacy pollutants still pose a risk to otters and other freshwater predators, with spatially widespread exceedance of thresholds above which reproduction or survival has been reduced in related species.

Samples of ambient PM₂.₅ were collected in the Qingdao harbor area between 21 March and May 25, 2016, and analyzed to investigate the compositions and sources of PM₂.₅ and to assess source-specific selected toxic element health risks to workers via a combination of positive matrix factorization (PMF) and health risk (HR) assessment models. The mean concentration of PM₂.₅ in harbor area was 48 μg m⁻³ with organic matter (OM) dominating its mass. Zn and V concentrations were significantly higher than the other selected toxic elements. The hazard index (HI) and cancer risk (Rᵢ) of all selected toxic elements were lower than the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) limits. There were no non-cancer and cancer risks for workers in harbor area. The contributions from industrial emissions (IE), ship emissions (SE), vehicle emissions (VE), and crustal dust and coal combustion (CDCC) to selected toxic elements were 39.0%, 12.8%, 24.0%, and 23.0%, respectively. The HI values of selected toxic elements from IE, CDCC, SE, and VE were 1.85 × 10⁻¹, 7.08 × 10⁻², 6.36 × 10⁻², and 3.37 × 10⁻², respectively; these are lower than the USEPA limits. The total cancer risk (Rₜ) value from selected toxic elements in CDCC was 2.04 × 10⁻⁷, followed by IE (6.40 × 10⁻⁸), SE (2.26 × 10⁻⁸), and VE (2.18 × 10⁻⁸). CDCC and IE were the likely sources of cancer risk in harbor area. The Bo Sea and coast were identified as the likely source areas for health risks from IE via potential source contribution function (PSCF) analysis based on the results of PMF-HR modelling. Although the source-specific health risks were below the recommended limit values, this work illustrates how toxic species in PM₂.₅ health risks can be associated with sources such that control measures could be undertaken if the risks warranted it.

The Amazon coastal zone has become contaminated with organic pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, information about their distribution and sources in this area is scarce, despite increasing deforestation and oil exploitation. Therefore, individual PAHs were analysed in the sediments of the Oyapock estuary, which is located in the Amazon coastal zone. This study provides information about the spatial and short-term temporal distributions of PAHs and discusses the major sources of PAHs to better understand the anthropogenic processes occurring in adjacent areas. The concentrations of all sixteen priority PAHs defined by the US EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency, ∑₁₆PAHs) ranged from 10.9 to 138.8 ng g⁻¹ with a mean and standard deviation = 37.9 ± 20.5 and indicated that this estuary is not contaminated, while the mean levels were similar to those found in other Amazon regions and pristine areas along the coast of Brazil. No significant differences were found in the sedimentary PAHs levels between the wet and dry sampling campaigns, despite the different climatic conditions. Diagnostic ratios, positive matrix factorization (PMF) and cluster analysis have shown that the majority of the investigated PAHs were derived from combustion processes (at least 55.1%, as estimated by the PMF model). Localized source inputs from oil and its by-products concomitantly with natural/biogenic sources appear to be secondary sources. The PAH contribution from biomass and wood combustion was approximately 13.6% and was relatively lower than other regions of the Amazon that are undergoing massive biomass burning. As the first study of PAHs in this region, this study provides vital information on the healthy state of the estuary and can serve as a baseline for assessing the impacts of acute oil disasters or the chronic input of PAHs as a result of human settlements.

A systematic investigation into bioaccessible heavy metals in shellfish Crassostrea ariakensis, Chlamys farreri, and Sinonovacula constricta from coastal cities Shenzhen, Zhoushan, Qingdao, and Dandong was carried out to assess the potential health risk to residents in coastal regions in China. The bioaccessible fractions of heavy metals were (μg‧g⁻¹): Zn (0.63–15.01), Cu (0.10–12.91), Cd (0.01–0.64), As (0.11–0.33), Cr (0.07–0.12), Pb (0.01–0.03). The bioaccessibilities of heavy metals were Cr 61.86%, inorganic As (iAs) 60.44%, Pb 55.74%, Cu 46.83%, Zn 28.16%, and Cd 24.99%. As for child and adult, the bioaccessibility-corrected estimated daily intakes were acceptable and the non-carcinogenic risks posed by heavy metals were not obvious. The carcinogenic risks posed by bioaccessible heavy metals at the fifth percentile were 10-fold higher than the acceptable level (10⁻⁴), with iAs and Cd to be the major contributors, regardless of child or adult. The probabilistic estimation showed the low risk of shellfish consumption, which was verified by higher values of maximum allowable consumption rate and monthly meals at the 95 percentile; while some control of consumption rate and monthly meals was necessary for reducing heavy metal exposure of most shellfish samples, except for the safe consumption of S. constricta for both child and adult in Qingdao and Shenzhen, China.

Per-and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of chemicals used in a wide variety of commercial products and industrial applications. These chemicals are persistent, can accumulate in humans' and animals' tissues and in the environment, representing an increasing concern due to their moderate to highly toxicity. Their global distribution, persistence and toxicity led to an urgent need to investigate bioaccumulation also in marine species. In 2013 PFAS contamination was detected in a vast area in Veneto region, mainly in Adige and Brenta rivers. In order to investigate any relevant presence of these substances in marine vertebrates constantly living in the area, PFAS were measured in hepatic tissue samples of 20 bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) stranded along the northern Adriatic Sea coastline between 2008 and 2020. Using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, 17 target PFAS (PFBA, PFPeA, PFHxA, PFHpA, PFOA, PFNA, PFDA, PFUnA, PFDoA, PFTrDA, PFTeDA, PFBS, PFHxS, PFOS, PFDS, PFHpS, PFPeS), were quantified in the samples. PFAS profiles were generally composed of the same five dominant PFAS (PFOS > PFUnA > PFDA ≈ PFDoA ≈ PFTrDA). The greatest PFOS concentration found was 629,73 ng/g wet weight, and PFOS accounted until 71% in the PFAS profiles. No significant differences between sexes were found, while calves showing higher mean values than adults, possibly indicating an increasing ability in the elimination of PFAS with age. Finally, a temporal analysis was carried out considering three different periods of time, but no temporal differences in concentrations were found. The results suggest that long-chain PFAS are widespread in bottlenose dolphins along the North Adriatic Sea. Furthermore, they represent a baseline to investigate the impact of PFAS on marine mammals’ conservation and health. Filling an important gap in the knowledge of PFAS accumulation in bottlenose dolphins, this study highlights the relevant role of Environmental and Tissue Banks for retrospective analyses on emergent contaminants.
