Correlation Study of Meteorological Parameters and Criteria Air Pollutants in Jiangsu Province, China

Air pollution is a global issue and meteorological factors play an important role in its transportationand regional concentration. The current research is aimed to analyse the variations in meteorologicalparameters in a seasonal and geographical location context in the Jiangsu province of China, and itscorrelation with the six criteria air pollutants, and air quality index (AQI). The present analysis willsupplement the limited understanding on the relation between the regions prevalent climatic conditionsand atmospheric pollution. The meteorological data analysis showed Suzhou city located in thesouthern region of the Jiangsu province with high average temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall.Maximum values of temperature, UV index, sunshine, relative humidity, and rainfall occurred duringsummer, while air pressure in winter. High values of all meteorological parameters occurred in thenorthern and southern region of the province. The data correlation study revealed AQI to havenegative correlation with most meteorological parameters, and positive correlation with air pressure inall cities.

We estimated the sample size (the number of samples) required to evaluate the concentration of radiocesium (¹³⁷Cs) in Japanese fir (Abies firma Sieb. & Zucc.), 5 years after the outbreak of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. We investigated the spatial structure of the contamination levels in this species growing in a mixed deciduous broadleaf and evergreen coniferous forest stand. We sampled 40 saplings with a tree height of 150 cm–250 cm in a Fukushima forest community. The results showed that: (1) there was no correlation between the ¹³⁷Cs concentration in needles and soil, and (2) the difference in the spatial distribution pattern of ¹³⁷Cs concentration between needles and soil suggest that the contribution of root uptake to ¹³⁷Cs in new needles of this species may be minor in the 5 years after the radionuclides were released into the atmosphere. The concentration of ¹³⁷Cs in needles showed a strong positive spatial autocorrelation in the distance class from 0 to 2.5 m, suggesting that the statistical analysis of data should consider spatial autocorrelation in the case of an assessment of the radioactive contamination of forest trees. According to our sample size analysis, a sample size of seven trees was required to determine the mean contamination level within an error in the means of no more than 10%. This required sample size may be feasible for most sites.

Toxocariasis is a neglected tropical disease of humans. Although many studies have indicated or shown that environmental contamination with Toxocara species eggs is a major risk factor for toxocariasis in humans, there has been no comprehensive analysis of published data or information. Here, we conducted the first systematic review and meta-analysis of current literature to assess the global prevalence of Toxocara eggs in public places (including beaches, parks and playgrounds). We conducted searches of the PubMed, Embase, Scopus and Science Direct databases for relevant studies published until 20 April 2018, and assessed the prevalence rates of Toxocara eggs in public places. We used the random effects model to calculate pooled prevalence estimates, with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and analysed data in relation to WHO geographical regions. Subgroup analysis and meta-regressions regarding the geographical and environmental variables were also performed. Of 2384 publications identified, 109 studies that tested 42,797 soil samples in 40 countries were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled global prevalence of Toxocara eggs in public places was 21% (95% CI, 16–27%; 13,895/42,797). The estimated prevalence rates in the different WHO regions ranged from 13% to 35%: Western Pacific (35%; 95% CI, 15–58%), Africa (27%; 95% CI, 11–47%), South America (25%; 95% CI, 13–33%), South-East Asia (21%; 95% CI, 3–49%), Middle East and North Africa (18%; 95% CI, 11–24%), Europe (18%; 95% CI, 14–22%), and North and Central Americas (13%; 95% CI, 8–23%). A high prevalence was significantly associated with high geographical longitude (P = 0.04), low latitude (P = 0.02) and high relative environmental humidity (P = 0.04). This meta-analysis of data from published records indicates that public places are often heavily contaminated with eggs of Toxocara. This finding calls for measures to reduce the potential risk of infection and disease in humans.

Relationships between the presence of PCBs, OCPs and metals in aquatic ecosystems and the ecological water quality were investigated by combining datasets of long-term monitoring of chemicals in European eel (Anguilla anguilla, N = 1156) in Flanders (Belgium) and the Ecological Quality Ratio (EQR), based on the assessment of fish assemblages at 185 locations. For most pollutants, EQR scores were lower when pollutant levels were higher. Threshold concentrations for a good quality could be formulated for PCB's, most metals and OCPs. Mixed models suggested that the ecological water quality was significantly correlated with the presence of PCBs. However, the low R2 indicates that other environmental pressures may significantly influence the biotic integrity of fish communities. Empirical data and their analyses are essential to enable defining threshold values of bioaccumulated levels to allow better protection of the aquatic environment and its biota through associated food webs as demanded by the Water Framework Directive.

Outliers in urban soil geochemical databases may imply potential contaminated land. Different methodologies which can be easily implemented for the identification of global and spatial outliers were applied for Pb concentrations in urban soils of Galway City in Ireland. Due to its strongly skewed probability feature, a Box-Cox transformation was performed prior to further analyses. The graphic methods of histogram and box-and-whisker plot were effective in identification of global outliers at the original scale of the dataset. Spatial outliers could be identified by a local indicator of spatial association of local Moran's I, cross-validation of kriging, and a geographically weighted regression. The spatial locations of outliers were visualised using a geographical information system. Different methods showed generally consistent results, but differences existed. It is suggested that outliers identified by statistical methods should be confirmed and justified using scientific knowledge before they are properly dealt with. Outliers in urban geochemical databases can be detected to provide guidance for identification of potential contaminated land.

The genus Artemia sp. has been accepted as a reliable model organism for aquatic toxicity and nanotoxicity experiments, as far as the ISO TS 20787 has recently been published to standardize nanotoxicity test with this organism. Experimental and environmental conditions may affect the toxicity of nanomaterials on aquatic organisms including Artemia sp. nauplii. In this study, acute toxicity effects of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the nauplii of Artemia salina was investigated under various conditions (e.g. different lights, salinities, temperatures, volume and agitation of exposure media and instar stages of nauplii). The EC values were calculated using Probit program and all data were analyzed statistically by SPSS software. At all test conditions, the immobilization rate of Artemia nauplii increased in a concentration-dependent manner (P < 0.05). The sensitivity of instar stage II to different concentrations of AgNPs was significantly higher than instar I (P < 0.05). The toxicity effect of AgNPs was affected by alteration of environmental conditions, so that the effective concentration (EC) values for instar I of A. salina decreased with increasing water temperature, decreasing water salinity and in continuous darkness condition. The EC50 value of AgNPs was significantly lower in 100 mL beakers (21.35 ± 5.67 mg L−1) than 10 mL well plates (42.44 ± 11.30 mg L−1). Agitation of exposure media did not affect the toxicity of AgNPs. The results indicated that the experimental and environmental conditions influence on the toxicity of AgNPs in the nauplii of A. salina.

Reservoirs typically have elevated fish mercury (Hg) levels compared to natural lakes and rivers. A unique feature of reservoirs is water-level management which can result in sediment exposure to the air. The objective of this study is to identify how reservoir water-level fluctuations impact Hg cycling, particularly the formation of the more toxic and bioaccumulative methylmercury (MeHg). Total-Hg (THg), MeHg, stable isotope methylation rates and several ancillary parameters were measured in reservoir sediments (including some in porewater and overlying water) that are seasonally and permanently inundated. The results showed that sediment and porewater MeHg concentrations were over 3-times higher in areas experiencing water-level fluctuations compared to permanently inundated sediments. Analysis of the data suggest that the enhanced breakdown of organic matter in sediments experiencing water-level fluctuations has a two-fold effect on stimulating Hg methylation: 1) it increases the partitioning of inorganic Hg from the solid phase into the porewater phase (lower log Kd values) where it is more bioavailable for methylation; and 2) it increases dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the porewater which can stimulate the microbial community that can methylate Hg. Sulfate concentrations and cycling were enhanced in the seasonally inundated sediments and may have also contributed to increased MeHg production. Overall, our results suggest that reservoir management actions can have an impact on the sediment-porewater characteristics that affect MeHg production. Such findings are also relevant to natural water systems that experience wetting and drying cycles, such as floodplains and ombrotrophic wetlands.

We explore how the analysis of web-based data, such as Twitter and Google Trends, can be used to assess the social relevance of an environmental accident. The concept and methods are applied in the shutdown of drinking water supply at the city of Toledo, Ohio, USA. Toledo's notice, which persisted from August 1 to 4, 2014, is a high-profile event that directly influenced approximately half a million people and received wide recognition. The notice was given when excessive levels of microcystin, a byproduct of cyanobacteria blooms, were discovered at the drinking water treatment plant on Lake Erie. Twitter mining results illustrated an instant response to the Toledo incident, the associated collective knowledge, and public perception. The results from Google Trends, on the other hand, revealed how the Toledo event raised public attention on the associated environmental issue, harmful algal blooms, in a long-term context. Thus, when jointly applied, Twitter and Google Trend analysis results offer complementary perspectives. Web content aggregated through mining approaches provides a social standpoint, such as public perception and interest, and offers context for establishing and evaluating environmental management policies.

Multi-biomarker approaches are used to assess ecosystem health and identify impacts of environmental stress on organisms. However, exploration of large datasets by environmental managers represents a major challenge for regulatory application of this tool. Several integrative tools were developed to summarize biomarker responses. The aim of the present paper is to update calculation of the "Integrated Biological Response" (IBR) described by Beliaeff and Burgeot (Environ Toxicol Chem 21:1316-1322, 2002) to avoid weaknesses of this integrative tool. In the present paper, a novel index named "Integrated Biological Responses version 2" based on the reference deviation concept is presented. It allows a clear discrimination of sampling sites as for the IBR, but several differences are observed for contaminated sites according to up- and downregulation of biomarker responses. This novel tool could be used to integrate multi-biomarker responses not only in large-scale monitoring but also in upstream/downstream investigations.
