Plastic polymers act as passive samplers in air system and concentrate hydrophobic organic contaminants by sorption or specific interactions, which can be transported to other systems such as the marine environment. In this study plastic debris was sampled in the surrounding area of a Mediterranean lagoon in order to determine the concentration of persistent and emerging organic contaminants. More specifically, desorption of 91 regulated and emerging organic contaminants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorinated pesticides, current-use pesticides, personal care products, other pesticides and plastic additives) was characterized for the first 24 h from different polymers to seawater and the remaining content of these contaminants was also extracted by ultrasonic extraction with methanol. All samples were analyzed by Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction coupled to GC/MS. A significant fraction of sorbed contaminants in polymers was desorbed in the first 24 h, particularly for triazines and organophosphorus pesticides due to their lower hydrophobicity than other considered analytes. The remaining contaminants contained in plastics can be also transferred to seawater, sediments or biota. Considering 24 h desorbed fraction plus the remaining methanol extracted fraction, the highest transfer levels corresponded to personal care products, plastic additives, current-use pesticides and PAHs. This is the first study to show the relevance of the transport of organic contaminants on plastic debris from littoral areas to the marine environment.

High arsenic groundwater generally coexists with elevated Fe2+ concentrations (mg L−1 levels) under reducing conditions, but an explanation for the extremely high arsenic (up to ∼2690) concentrations at very low Fe2+ (i.e., μg L−1 levels) in groundwater of Datong Basin remains elusive. Field groundwater investigation and laboratory microcosm experiments were implemented in this study. The field groundwater was characterized by weakly alkaline (pH 7.69 to 8.34) and reducing conditions (Eh −221.7 to −31.9 mV) and arsenic concentration averages at 697 μg L−1. Acinetobacter (5.9–51.3%), Desulfosporosinus (4.6–30.2%), Brevundimonas (3.9–19%) and Pseudomonas (3.2–14.6%) were identified as the dominant genera in the bacterial communities. Bacterially mediated arsenate reduction, Fe(III) reduction, and sulfate reduction are processes occurring (or having previously occurred) in the groundwater. Results from incubation experiment (27 d) revealed that nitrate, arsenate, and Fe(III)/sulfate reduced sequentially with time under anoxic conditions, while Fe(III) and sulfate reduction processes had no obvious differences, occurring almost simultaneously. Moreover, low Fe2+ concentrations were attributed to initially high pH conditions, which relatively retarded Fe(III) reduction. In addition, arsenic behavior in relation to groundwater redox conditions, matrices, and solution chemistry were elaborated. Bacterial arsenate reduction process proceeded before Fe(III) and sulfate reduction in the incubation experiment, and the total arsenic concentration (dominated by arsenite) gradually increased from ∼7 to 115 μg L−1 as arsenate was reduced. Accordingly, bacterially mediated reductive desorption of arsenate is identified as the main process controlling arsenic mobility, while Fe(III) reduction coupled with sulfate reduction are secondary processes that have also contributed to arsenic enrichment in the study site. Overall, this study provide important insights into the mechanism controlling arsenic mobility under weakly alkaline and reducing conditions, and furnishes that arsenate reduction by bacteria play a major role leading to high accumulation of desorbed arsenite in groundwater.

Tetracyclines are a class of antimicrobials frequently found in the environment, and have promoted the proliferation of antibiotic resistance. An unanswered research question is whether tetracycline sorbed to soils is still bioavailable to bacteria and exerts selective pressure on the bacterial community for the development of antibiotic resistance. In this study, bioreporter E. coli MC4100/pTGM strain was used to probe the bioavailability of tetracycline sorbed by smectite clay, a class of common soil minerals. Batch sorption experiments were conducted to prepare clay samples with a wide range of sorbed tetracycline concentration. The bioreporter was incubated with tetracycline-sorbed clay at different clay/solution ratios and water contents, as well as using dialysis tubings to prevent the direct contact between bacterial cells and clay particles. The expression of antibiotic resistance genes from the bioreporter was measured using a flow cytometer as a measurement of bioavailability/selective pressure. The direct contact of bioreporter cells to clay surfaces represented an important pathway facilitating bacterial access to clay-sorbed tetracycline. In clay-water suspensions, reducing solution volume rendered more bacteria to attach to clay surfaces enhancing the bioavailability of clay-sorbed tetracycline. The strong fluorescence emission from bioreporter cells on clay surfaces indicated that clay-sorbed tetracycline was still bioavailable to bacteria. The formation of biofilms on clay surfaces could increase bacterial access to clay-sorbed tetracycline. In addition, desorption of loosely sorbed tetracycline into bulk solution contributed to bacterial exposure and activation of the antibiotic resistance genes. Tetracycline sorbed by soil geosorbents could exert selective pressure on the surrounding microbial communities via bacterial exposure to tetracycline in solution from desorption and to the geosorbent-sorbed tetracycline as well.

This paper investigated the application of graphite particle electrodes to the removal of Zn, Pb, Cu, and Cd from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ashes in a three-dimensional (3D) electrokinetic reactor. The influences of the voltage gradient, mass ratio of graphite powers to fly ashes, nitric acid concentrations, proposing times, and liquid-solid (L-M) ratios on the remedial efficiencies of MSWI fly ashes were comprehensively studied in an orthogonal deign and a sequential double-factor setup. Significant analysis showed that changes in the mass ratios and nitric acid concentrations both had a statistically significant effect on the removals of Zn and Pb. Proposing times and L-M ratios both remarkably affected the removals of heavy metals (HMs) in a 3D electrochemical system. The graphite powers had a narrower distribution interval and slightly larger surface areas compared with MSWI fly ashes, which relented pH gradients over the time in the electrochemical experiments and minimized the bubble barricade caused by the hydrolysis. The particle electrode had increased the residue factions of Zn, Pb, Cu, and Cd in S1 region by approximately 216%, 136%, 309%, and 950%, respectively, compared with the raw MSWI fly ashes. The addition of graphite powders to a two-dimensional (2D) electrochemical process strengthened hydrolysis reactions, shortened time for the redistribution of pH balance, decreased the tortuosity of migration path, and increased the desorption concentrations of HMs in the sample area.

While phosphate (P) inhibits arsenic (As) uptake by plants, phytate increases As uptake by As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata. Here we tried to understand the underling mechanisms by investigating the roles of phytate in soil As desorption, P transport in P. vittata, short-term As uptake, and plant growth and As accumulation from soils. Sterile soil was used to exclude microbial degradation on phytate. Results showed that inorganic P released 3.3-fold more As than that of phytate from soil. However, P. vittata accumulated 2–2.5 fold more As from soils with phytate than that in control and P treatment. In addition, different from P suppression on As uptake, solution uptake experiment showed that As uptake in phytate treatment was comparable to that of control under 0.1–7.5 μM As after 1–24 h. Moreover, responding to phytate, P. vittata P transporter PvPht1;3 increased by 3-fold while PvPht1;1 decreased by 65%. The data suggested that phytate upregulated PvPht1;3, thereby contributing to As uptake in P. vittata. Our results showed that, though with lower As release from soil compared to P, phytate induced more As uptake and better growth in P. vittata by upregulating P transporters.

IMO’s Anti-Fouling Systems convention banned the use of organotin-based antifouling systems in 2008 as the ultimate effort to stop tributyltin (TBT) inputs into the marine environment. One of the hazardous effects of TBT is imposex (the superimposition of male sexual characters onto gastropod females), a phenomenon that may cause female sterility and the gastropod populations decline. Despite previous European Union legislation had already been shown effective in reducing the imposex levels along the Portuguese coast, this study intends to confirm these decreasing trends after 2008 and describe the global evolution in the last 15 years. Imposex levels were assessed in two bioindicators – the dog-whelk Nucella lapillus and the netted-whelk Nassarius reticulatus (Gastropoda, Prosobranchia) – in 2011 and 2014, and the results were compared with previous years. Both species showed progressive decreasing trends in imposex levels over the last 15 years; median values of the vas deferens sequence index (VDSI) fell from 3.96 to 0.78 in N. lapillus and from 3.39 to 0.29 in N. reticulatus. The temporal/spatial evolution of imposex suggests an apparent shift of TBT hotspots, being now restricted to fishing ports and marinas in detriment of large commercial harbours where TBT levels fell rapidly. Butyltins were measured in the whole tissues of N. lapillus females collected in 2014: monobutyltin (MBT) varied from < DL (detection limit: 1 ng Sn/g) to 13 ng Sn/g dw, dibutyltin (DBT) from 2.2 to 27 ng Sn/g dw and TBT from 1.5 to 55 ng Sn/g dw. Although TBT body burden has declined over time, the butyltin degradation index ([MBT]+[DBT])/[TBT] exhibited values < 1 in c. a. 90% of the sites assessed, suggesting that recent TBT inputs are still widespread in the Portuguese coast eventually due to illegal use of TBT antifouling systems and TBT desorption from sediments.

In this study, 14 antibiotics and one metabolite were determined in sewages and size-dependent sewer sediments at three sampling sites in the city of Dresden, Germany. Adsorption and desorption experiments were conducted with fractionated sediments. All antibiotics and the metabolite investigated were determined in the sewages; 9 of 14 antibiotics and the metabolite were adsorbed to sewer sediments. The adsorbed antibiotic loads in ng of antibiotic per g of sediment correlated with antibiotic concentrations in ng of antibiotic per litre of sewage. The size fractions <63 μm, 63–100 μm and 100–200 μm had significantly higher loads of adsorbed antibiotics than bigger size fractions. In general, the adsorbed load decreased with an increasing size fraction, but size fractions >200 μm had similar levels of adsorbed antibiotic loads. An antibiotic-specific adsorption coefficient, normalized to organic content, was calculated: four antibiotics exceeded 10.0 L g⁻¹, three antibiotics fell below 1.0 L g⁻¹ and all residual antibiotics and the metabolite were in the range of 1.0–10.0 L g⁻¹. The adsorbed antibiotic load and the organic matter increased with time, generally. The mineral composition had a minor effect on the adsorption coefficients. Desorption dynamics of five antibiotics and the metabolite were quantified. Regardless of the size fraction, the predominant part of the equilibrium antibiotic concentration was desorbed after 10 min. The calculated desorption distribution coefficient indicated adsorption as irreversible at the pH investigated (7.5 ± 0.5).

The implications of humic acid (HA) regarding surface properties of graphene materials and their interactions with phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are not vivid. We report the role of HA on graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) for sorption-desorption behavior of PAEs. Besides higher surface area and pore volume, the hydrophobic π-conjugated carbon atoms on RGO ensured prominent adsorption capacity towards PAEs in comparison to hydrophilic GO, highlighting the hydrophobic effect. After adjusting for the hydrophobic effect by calculating the hexadecane-water partition coefficient (KHW) normalized adsorption coefficient (Kd/KHW), the dimethyl phthalate (DMP) molecule portrayed a higher adsorption affinity towards RGO by π-π electron donor–acceptor (EDA) interaction for active sites on graphene interface via sieving effect. In contrast to RGO, the weak π-π EDA interactions and H-bonding was observed between the carbonyl groups of PAEs and oxygen containing functional groups on GO. There was no obvious change in morphologies of GO and RGO before and desorption as revealed by SEM and TEM images, as desorption hysteresis did not occur in all conditions. The presence of HA also resulted in shielding effect thereby decreasing the adsorption rate and capacity of diethyl phthalate (DEP) on GO and RGO, while it had little effect on DMP, probably due to the adsorbed HA as new active sites. The desorption of DMP and DEP on RGO in presence of HA was quick and enhanced. These results should be important for evaluating the fate and health risk of graphene materials and PAEs in the environment.

Accumulation of excess fluoride has a destructive effect on the environment, endangering human health, affecting organism growth and development, and leading to damage to the biological chain, thereby affecting ecological environment balance. In recent years, numerous studies focused on the molecular mechanisms associated with fluoride toxicity; however, fluoride-toxicity mechanisms in insect cells remain unclear. This study explored the toxic impact of sodium fluoride (NaF) on Spodoptera frugiperda 9 (Sf9) insect cells. High concentrations of NaF (10−4 M, 10−3 M and 10−2 M) resulted in cell enlargement, cell membrane blurring and breakage, and release of cellular contents. Dose-response curves indicated that NaF-specific inhibition rates on Sf9-cell activity increased along with increases in NaF concentration, with a half-inhibitory concentration (IC50) for NaF of 5.919 × 10−3 M at 72 h. Compared with controls, the percentages of early and late apoptotic and necrotic cells clearly increased based on observed increases in NaF concentrations. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis combined with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry was used to detect differentially expressed proteins in Sf9 cells treated with IC50 NaF, identifying 17 proteins, seven of which were upregulated and 10 downregulated. These results demonstrated that Sf9 cells showed signs of NaF-mediated toxicity through alterations in cell morphology, apoptosis rates, and protein expression.

In this study, degradation affinities of 14 antibiotics and one metabolite were determined in batch experiments. A modelling framework was applied to decrypt potential ranges of abiotic, biotic and photolytic degradation coefficients. In detail, we performed batch experiments with three different sewages in the dark at 7 °C and 22 °C. Additionally, we conducted further batch experiments with artificial irradiation and different dilutions of the sewage at 30 °C – de novo three different sewages were used. The batch experiments were initially spiked with a stock solution with 14 antibiotics and one metabolite to increase background concentrations by 1 μg L−1 for each compound. The final antibiotic concentrations were sub-inhibitory with regard to sewage bacteria. The here presented modelling framework based on the Activated Sludge Model No. 3 in combination with adsorption and desorption processes. The model was calibrated with monitored standard sewage compounds before antibiotic degradation rates were quantified. The model decrypted ranges of abiotic, biotic and photolytic degradation coefficients. In detail, six antibiotics were not abiotic degradable at 7 °C, five antibiotics not at 22 °C and only 2 antibiotics at 30 °C. Finally, nine antibiotics were not significantly biodegradable at 7 °C and 22 °C. The model determined the link between adsorption characteristics and biodegradation rates. In detail, the rate was significantly affected by the bio-solid partition coefficient and the duration until adsorption was balanced. All antibiotics and the metabolite were photolytic degradable. In general, photolytic degradation was the most efficient elimination pathway of presented antibiotics except for the given metabolite and penicillin antibiotics.
