Northern China is a significant source of dust source in Central Asia. Thus, high-resolution analysis of dust storms and comparison of dust sources in different regions of northern China are important to clarify the formation mechanism of East Asian dust storms and predict or even prevent such storms. Here, we analyzed spatiotemporal trends in dust storms that occurred in three main dust source regions during 1960–2007: Taklimakan Desert (western region [WR]), Badain Jaran and Tengger Deserts (middle region [MR]), and Otindag Sandy Land (eastern region [ER]). We analyzed daily dust storm frequency (DSF) at the 10-day scale (first [FTDM], middle [MTDM], and last [LTDM] 10 days of a month), and investigated the association of dust storm occurrences with meteorological factors. The 10-day DSF was greatest in the FTDM (accounting for 77.14% of monthly occurrences) in the WR, MTDM (45.85%) in the MR, and LTDM (72.12%) in the ER, showing a clear trend of movement from the WR to the ER. Temporal analysis of DSF revealed trend changes over time at annual and 10-day scales, with mutation points at 1985 and 2000. We applied single-factor and multiple-factor analyses to explore the driving mechanisms of DSF at the 10-day scale. Among single factors, a low wind-speed threshold, high solar radiation, and high evaporation were correlated with a high DSF, effectively explaining the variations in DSF at the 10-day scale; however, temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation poorly explained variations in DSF. Similarly, multiple-factor analysis using a classification and regression tree revealed that maximum wind speed was a major influencing factor of dust storm occurrence at the 10-day scale, followed by relative humidity, evaporation, and solar radiation; temperature and precipitation had weak influences. These findings help clarify the mechanisms of dust storm occurrence in East Asia.

Potential toxic metal(loid)s (PTMs) in road dust are a major concern in relation to urban environmental quality. Identifying pollution hotspots and sources of PTMs is an essential prerequisite for pollution control and management. Herein, the concentrations, pollution and potential health risks of 8 PTMs (As, Cd, Co, Cu, Hg, Mo, Pb and Zn) in road dust from the highly urbanized areas of Nanjing were studied. Spatial occurrences and sources of PTMs were explored using geostatistics, principal component analysis (PCA) and local Moran’s index. The contamination factor (CF) results showed that Co was mainly natural in origin, while the other PTMs were polluted, with average CFs ranging from 1.4 to 11.0 as follows: Hg > Mo > Cd > Cu > Pb > Zn > As, indicating moderate to very high contamination. Except for Co and Hg, the other PTMs were heavily loaded on PC1, which explained 44.72% of the total variance. Combining the statistical results and distributions of potential sources, we deduced that industrial emissions dominated the spatial patterns of all polluted PTMs in road dust, which showed high levels in the northern parts of the study region and generally decreasing levels southwards. Moreover, Pb and Zn in the south-central area and Cd in the north-central area displayed hotspots, with maximum CFs of 5.5 (Pb), 4.2 (Zn) and 16.2 (Cd), which were related to additional automotive and railway braking emissions, respectively. The resuspension of legacy pesticides in soil is likely responsible for the As pollution hotspot in the southwestern part. Despite the high anthropogenic contributions (27% for As and 68–88% for the other metals) to the PTMs in road dust, their noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks were rarely found for children and adults based on the values of the hazard index and carcinogenic risk index. However, attention still should be paid to the pollution hotspots in the northern region.

This paper presents the results of the study on columnar aerosol optical and physical properties and radiative effects directly observed over Dushanbe, the capital city of Tajikistan, a NASA AERONET site (equipped with a CIMEL sunphotometer) in Central Asia. The average aerosol optical depth (AOD) and Ångström exponent (AE) during the observation period from July 2010 to April 2018 were found to be 0.28 ± 0.20 and 0.82 ± 0.40, respectively. The highest seasonal AOD (0.32 ± 0.24), accompanied by the lowest average AE (0.61 ± 0.25) and fine-mode fraction in AOD (0.39), was observed during summer due to the influence of coarse particles like dust from arid regions. Fine particles were found in significant amounts during winter. The ‘mixed aerosol’ was identified as the dominant aerosol type with presence of ‘dust aerosol’ during summer and autumn seasons. Aerosol properties like volume size distribution, single scattering albedo, asymmetry parameter and refractive index suggested the influence of coarse particles (during summer and autumn). Most of the air masses reaching this site transported local and regional emissions, including from beyond Central Asia, explaining the presence of various aerosol types in Dushanbe’s atmosphere. The seasonal aerosol radiative forcing efficiency (ARFE) in the atmosphere was found high (>100 Wm⁻²) and consistent throughout the year. Consequently, this resulted in similar seasonally coherent high atmospheric solar heating rate (HR) of 1.5 K day⁻¹ during summer-autumn-winter, and ca. 0.9 K day⁻¹ during spring season. High ARFE and HR values indicate that atmospheric aerosols could exert significant implications to regional air quality, climate and cryosphere over the central Asian region and downwind Tianshan and Himalaya-Tibetan Plateau mountain regions with sensitive ecosystems.

With the phase out of perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), the composition profiles of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) in our living environment are unclear. In this study, 25 PFASs were analyzed in indoor dust samples collected from urban, industrial, and e-waste dismantling areas in China. PFOS alternatives, including 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (6:2 Cl-PFESA) (median: 5.52 ng/g) and 8:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (8:2 Cl-PFESA) (1.81 ng/g), were frequently detected. By contrast, PFOA alternatives, such as hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HPFO-DA, Gen-X) and ammonium 4,8-dioxa-3H-perfluorononanoate (ADONA), were not found in any of the dust samples. As expected, all legacy PFASs were widely observed in indoor dust, and 4 PFAS precursors were also detected. Dust concentrations of 6:2 Cl-PFESA were strongly correlated (p < 0.05) with those of 8:2 Cl-PFESA regardless of sampling sites. 6:2 Cl-PFESA was also significantly associated with that of PFOS in industrial and e-waste (p < 0.01) areas. Association analysis suggested that the sources of PFOS and its alternatives are common or related. Although ∑Cl-PFESA concentration was lower than that of PFOS (17.4 ng/g), industrial areas had the highest 6:2 Cl-PFESA/PFOS ratio (0.63). Composition profiles of PFASs in the industrial area showed the forefront of fluorine change. Thus, the present findings suggested that Cl-PFESAs are widely used as PFOS alternatives in China, and high levels of human Cl-PFESA exposure are expected in the future. Short-chain PFASs (C4–C7) were the predominant PFASs found in dust samples, contributing to over 40% of ∑total PFASs. Furthermore, perfluoro-1-butanesulfonate/PFOS and perfluoro-n-butanoic acid (PFBA)/PFOA ratios were 2.8 and 0.72, respectively. These findings suggested shifting to the short-chain PFASs in the environment in China. To the authors knowledge this is the first study to document the levels of 6:2 Cl-PFESA, 8:2 Cl-PFESA in indoor dust.

Polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are commonly added to electronic products for flame-retardation effects, and are attracting more and more attentions due to their potential toxicity, durability and bioaccumulation. This study conducts a sysmtematic review to understand the human exposure to PBDEs from e-waste recycling, especially exploring the exposure pathways and human burden of PBDEs as well as investigating the temporal trend of PBDEs exposure worldwide. The results show that the particular foods (contaminated fish, poultry, meat and breast milk) ingestion, indoor dust ingestion and indoor air inhalation may be key factors leading to human health risks of PBDEs exposure in e-waste recycling regions. Residents and some vulnerable groups (occupational workers and children) in e-waste recycling areas may face higher exposure levels and health risks. PBDE exposure is closely related to exposure level, exposure duration, e-waste recycling methods, and dietary customs. High levels of PBDEs are found in human tissues (breast milk, hair, blood (serum), placenta and other tissues) in e-waste areas, at far higher levels than in other areas. Existing data indicate that PBDE exposure levels do not present any apparent downward trend, and will possibly cause serious human diseases. More epidemiological studies are still needed to provide a solid basis for health risk assessment.

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) are receiving increasing concern due to their toxicity and ubiquity in the environment. To avoid restrictions imposed when using a high-volume active sampler, this study uses tree leaves to act as passive samplers to investigate the spatial distribution characteristics and sources of airborne EPFRs. Tree leaf samples were collected from 120 sites in five areas around China (each approximately 4 km × 4 km). EPFR concentrations in particles (<2 μm) on the surface of 110 leaf samples were detected, ranging from 7.5 × 10¹⁶ to 4.5 × 10¹⁹ spins/g. For the 10 N.D. samples, they were all collected from areas inaccessible by vehicles. The g-values of EPFRs on 68% leaf samples were larger than 2.004, suggesting the electron localized on the oxygen atom, and they were consistent with the road dust sample (g-value: 2.0042). Significant positive correlation was found between concentrations of elemental carbon (tracer of vehicle emissions) and EPFRs. Spatial distribution mapping showed that EPFR levels in various land uses differed noticeably. Although previous work has linked atmospheric EPFRs to waste incineration, the evidence in this study suggests that vehicle emissions, especially from heavy-duty vehicles, are the main sources. While waste incinerators with low emissions or effective dust-control devices might not be an important EPFR contributor. According to our estimation, over 90% of the EPFRs deposited on tree leaves might be attributed to automotive exhaust emissions, as a synergistic effect of primary exhausts and degradation of aromatic compounds in road dust. With adding the trapping agent into the particle samples (<2 μm), signals of hydroxyl radicals were observed. This indicates that EPFRs collected from this phytosampling method can lead to the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) once they are inhaled by human beings. Thus, this study helps highlight EPFR “hotspots” for potential health risk identification.

Numerous studies have focused on assessing the risk of human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in indoor dust via dermal contact. However, the dermal bioaccessibility and dermal absorption of PAHs in indoor dust have seldom been reported. In the present study, the effects of temperature, sweat ratio, solid-liquid ratio and incubation time on the dermal bioaccessibility of PAHs were examined. Naphthalene, phenanthrene, pyrene and benzo[a]pyrenewere selected for examination in an absorption assay with keratinocyte cells. The results showed the release of PAHs from indoor dust fitted a first-order one-compartment model. Naphthalene had the highest rate of release, which was consistent with the bioaccessibility assay results. In addition, the absorption rate of naphthalene and phenanthrene by keratinocytes was higher than that of pyrene and benzo[a]pyrene, with the latter being of higher molecular weight. These results indicated that low molecular weight PAHs were much more easily absorbed via dermal contact than were high molecular weight PAHs. The dermal bioavailability of PAHs in indoor dust was estimated by multiplying the bioaccessibility of PAHs in indoor dust by the ratio of dermal absorption by skin cells, and ranged from 0.12 to 51.0%. These data will be useful in risk assessments.

Lead intoxication is an important threat to human health and a large number of wildlife species. Animals are exposed to several sources of lead highlighting hunting ammunition and lead that is bioavailable in topsoil. Disentangling the role of each in lead exposure is an important conservation issue, particularly for species potentially affected by lead poisoning, such as vultures. The identification of lead sources in vultures and other species has been classically addressed by means of stable-isotope comparisons, but the extremely varied isotope signatures found in ammunition hinders this identification when it overlaps with topsoil signatures. In addition, assumptions related to the exposure of individual vultures to lead sources have been made without knowledge of the actual feeding grounds exploited by the birds. Here, we combine lead concentration analysis in blood, novel stable isotope approaches to assign the origin of the lead and GPS tracking data to investigate the main foraging grounds of two Iberian griffon vulture populations (N = 58) whose foraging ranges differ in terms of topsoil lead concentration and intensity of big game hunting activity. We found that the lead signature in vultures was closer to topsoil than to ammunition, but this similarity decreased significantly in the area with higher big game hunting activity. In addition, attending to the individual home ranges of the tracked birds, models accounting for the intensity of hunting activity better explained the higher blood lead concentration in vultures than topsoil exposure. In spite of that, our finding also show that lead exposure from topsoil is more important than previously thought.

Trace elements (TEs) in the insoluble particles of surface snow are less affected by melting processes and can be used as environmental proxies to reveal natural and anthropogenic emissions. Here the first comprehensive study of the 16 TEs (Al, As, Ba, Bi, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, Sr, Ti, U, V, and Zn) in insoluble particles (>0.45 μm) from surface snow samples collected at Urumqi Glacier No. 1 (UG1), Eastern Tien Shan, China, from February 2008 to January 2010 were presented. Results show that concentrations of most insoluble particulate TEs (TEs ᵢₙₛₒₗ) in the snow were higher in summer while lower in winter, due to the increasing particle inputs and melting processes. The abundances of As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in some samples were higher than those in surrounding urban soils, which might due to these TEs have further anthropogenic input beyond the already contaminated re-suspended urban soil particles and TEs were mainly enriched in particles with small grain size. Based on enrichment factor (EF) and principal component analysis (PCA), our results suggest that eight TEs (Al, Fe, Ti, Ba, Mn, Sr, U, and V) mainly came from mineral dust, while the remaining eight TEs (As, Bi, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sn, and Zn) were affected by coal combustion, mining and smelting of non-ferrous metals, traffic emissions, and the steel industry. The Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model suggests that pollutants might originate from Xinjiang province, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Moreover, UG1 received more significant inputs of particle-bound pollutants in summer than in winter due to the stronger convection and the prevailing valley wind that transports pollutants from the city of Urumqi.

Addressing the presence of rutile nanoparticles (NPs) in the air is a work in progress, and the development of methodologies for the identification of NPs in atmospheric dust is essential for the assessment of its toxicological effects. To address this issue, we selected the fast growing desertic city of Hermosillo in northern Mexico. Road dust (n = 266) and soils (n = 10) were sampled and bulk Ti-contents were tested by portable X-ray fluorescence. NPs were extracted from atmospheric dust by PM₁.₀-PTFE filters and further characterized by Confocal Raman Microscopy, Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) coupled to Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results showed (i) the average concentration of Ti in road dust (3447 mg kg⁻¹) was similar to natural values and worldwide urban dusts; (ii) the bulk geochemistry was not satisfactory for Ti-NPs identification; (iii) 76% of the total extracted PM₁.₀ sample corresponded to NPs; (iv) mono-microaggregates of rutile NPs were identified; (v) ubiquitous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were linked to NPs. The genotoxicity of rutile and PAHs, in connection with NPs content, make us aware of a crucial emerging environmental issue of significant health concern, justifying further research in this field.
