Knowledge gaps in ecotoxicology studies of marine environments in Pacific Island Countries and Territories – A systematic review

The Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs) are heavily dependent on the marine resources for food security, employment, government revenue and economic development, hence the concern about the potential exposure of these resources to pollutants. The main goal of this review was to identify ecotoxicology studies published that were done in PICTs. Four major gaps were identified: i) a quantitative gap, with low number of studies published on the PICTs; ii) a geographic gap, where ecotoxicology studies have unevenly covered the different PICTs; iii) a temporal gap, as no biological effect monitoring study has so far been published for the PICTs; and, iv) a pollutants gap, as all of the PICTs studies focused mainly on environmental monitoring studying on average two types of pollutants (heavy metals and pesticides) per PICT only. We suggest, therefore, the potential risk to the marine environment to be estimated by assessing the fate of pollutants via chemical and biological effect monitoring.

The Apulia region in Italy has the longest Adriatic coastline; thus, maritime tourism is the driving force for its economic development. Pollution risk for four representative touristic ports of the region was assessed by determining the concentrations of 10 metals, 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) congeners, and the main nutrients. The cumulative mean Effects Range–Median quotient (mERMq) was used to assess the hazard degree, while the distribution patterns and content ratios of different PAH sediment concentrations were investigated to identify the pollution sources. Principal component analyses indicated an anomalous pollution trend for one of the small touristic ports assessed; this trend emerged from contamination by heavy metals and PAHs to a larger extent than expected, considering the main activity in this port, especially in its inner basin. The reason of this anomaly is thought to be the hydrodynamic and/or other stress factors.

Interaction between environmental degradation and economic growth is a growing matter of interest among policymakers. This paper examines the trilateral association between SO2 and NO2 emission, inequality in energy intensity, and economic growth by using simultaneous-equation panel data models for a panel of 139 Indian cities over the period 2001–2013. Our results indicate that there is evidence of feedback hypothesis between NO2 and SO2 emissions and economic growth, economic growth and inequality in energy intensity, and NO2 and SO2 emissions and inequality in energy intensity. The results also verified the existence of Environmental Kuznets curve for both of the pollutants. These results are of interest to environmental and economic policymakers as these can help in coming up with economic policies to ensure environmental sustainability and an inclusive economic growth.

This paper looks into the causal association between economic growth, CO2 emission, trade volume, and human development indicator for Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC countries) during 1980–2013. Following a generalized method of moments (GMM) technique, we have found out that bidirectional causality exists between CO2 emissions and economic growth. Feedback hypothesis is supported between CO2 emissions and human development, trade volume and human development, economic growth, and human development, and CO2 emissions and trade volume. Apart from finding out the unidirectional association from trade volume to economic growth, this study also validated the existence of Environmental Kuznets curve. Empirical findings of the study substantiate that the policymakers of the BRIC nations must focus on the green energy initiatives, either by in-house development or by technology transfer. This movement will allow them to control the ambient air pollution prevalent in these nations.

Sediments collected from the coastal area of China, embracing west coast of Bohai Sea, south coast of Shandong Peninsula, and the Changjiang estuary (listed in order of decreasing north latitude), were analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). ∑PAH (Sixteen US EPA priority PAHs) were 2.7–350.9ng/g. Petroleum residue was the major contributor of PAHs in the coastal sediments of China due to oil leakage from ships and offshore oil fields. The contribution of vehicular emissions in coast of North China was significantly lower than that in the Changjiang Estuary, and the reverse was true for coal combustion. PAH concentrations in the sediment core of the Changjiang estuary steadily increased upward and the variation was primarily due to economic development and severe floods. The impact on PAHs by vehicular emissions (37.2%) and petrogenic sources (45.8%) overwhelmed combustion sources (17.0%).

Lead (Pb) is a typical heavy metal pollutant in the environment, and most Pb contamination comes from human activities. In the present work, the Pb contents of two black coral specimens (Cirrhipathes spp.) collected from the northern South China Sea were measured by synchrotron radiation micro X-ray fluorescence (SR μ-XRF) analysis with 2.5μm resolution. The results showed that sample SY-1 from the Sanya Bay (near the continent) exhibited higher Pb levels and greater fluctuations than sample XS-1 from the Xisha Islands (off the continent), reflecting the influence of terrestrial input and atmospheric deposition in coastal surface seawater. The present work also demonstrated that the Pb profile in black coral nearshore was highly influenced by human activities, mainly by war and economic development. Thus, black coral may serve as a new potential environmental Pb recorder with SR μ-XRF analytical technology.

Wintertime chemical composition of water–soluble particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5μm (PM2.5) was monitored in the Treasure Valley region near Boise, Idaho. Aerosol was sampled using a Particle Into Liquid Sampler (PILS) and subsequently analyzed using ion exchange chromatography and a total organic carbon analyzer. During the two–month sampling campaign, the region experienced varying meteorological regimes, with an extended atmospheric stagnation event towards the end of the study. For all of the weather regimes, water–soluble PM2.5 was dominated by organic material, but particulate nitrate showed the greatest variation over time. These variations in particulate nitrate concentration were found to be dependent on the time of day, nitrogen oxides (NOX) concentrations, and relative humidity. The increases in particulate nitrate did not correlate with an equivalent molar increase of ammonium concentration, ruling out solid ammonium nitrate formation as the dominant source. Instead, our analysis using an online aerosol thermodynamic model suggests that the condensation of gas phase nitric acid was possible within the meteorological conditions experienced during the study. In running this model, atmospheric chemical and physical parameters close to those observed during the study were used as model input. The simulation was run for three different scenarios, representing the different meteorological regimes experienced during the study. From the simulation particulate nitrate concentration was highest during cold and humid nights. Currently this region is in attainment with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for PM2.5; however, with the projected increase in population and economic growth, and the subsequent increase in NOX emissions, these episodic increases in particulate nitrate have the potential of pushing the area to non–attainment status.

Contamination with As, Cd and Hg, their spatial and temporal distribution are reported from the coastal wetland sediments of the northern Beibu Gulf, South China Sea. The content of As, Cd, Hg and TOC in surface sediments is 8.1±5.8μgg−1, 0.08±0.14μgg−1, 0.034±0.028μgg−1 and 0.45±0.39%, respectively. The mean sedimentation rates are 0.93–1.37cmyear−1 during 1920s to 2008 determined by 210Pb and 137Cs dating in three cores. The vertical profiles of As, Cd and Hg content in the cores retrieved from Qin and Nanliu River estuaries show increasing trends during 1985–2008 due to anthropogenic impact caused by local economic development. Locally the surface sediments have potential ecological risk of As to benthos according to the NOAA sediment quality guidelines.

The sessile green macroalgae in the Neopyropia aquaculture areas of the Subei Shoal are a confirmed source of green tides in the Southern Yellow Sea (SYS) of China. The green tides have a significant impact on local economic development (tourism, aquaculture, etc.) and ecological stability. In order to develop an effective method for eliminating the green macroalgae attached to Neopyropia aquaculture rafts, this study investigated the effects of mixed acid solutions (0.0475 % hydrochloric acid [HCl] and pH 2.0 citric acid) on cell damage, chlorophyll composition, phycobiliprotein content, and the photosynthetic fluorescence characteristics of Ulva prolifera and Neopyropia yezoensis. The chlorophyll contents of U. prolifera and N. yezoensis were significantly affected by the mixed acid solutions. After treatment with a mixed acid solution (4:3 volume ratio of HCl to citric acid) for 5 s, the photosynthetic pigment content of U. prolifera was significantly different from that of normal U. prolifera. However, photosynthetic pigment content in the treated N. yezoensis increased significantly. In addition, mixed acid solution treatment had a significant effect on the Fv/Fm of U. prolifera and N. yezoensis. After mixed acid treatment (4:3 HCl to citric acid), U. prolifera completely died, but the Fv/Fm of N. yezoensis was restored after 3 d. Therefore, a mixed acid solution comprising 0.0475 % HCl and pH 2.0 citric acid (at a volume ratio of 4:3) can be used as an agent for the removal of green macroalgae from Neopyropia aquaculture areas.

In this study, we investigated the historical variation, source identification, and distribution of heavy metal pollution in sediments of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) using ²¹⁰Pb dating. Our results suggest that the heavy metal concentrations were higher in the western part of the estuary. For all heavy metals, Cd was significantly enriched in the sediments. The Pearl River Delta (PRD) has experienced rapid economic development in the past 40 years, a decreasing trend in heavy metal fluxes after 2004 was identified, which suggests a reduction in heavy metal concentrations due to the removal of heavy polluting industries and the effective control of sewage discharge. A binary mixing model reveals that the contributions of anthropogenic Pb ranged from 45.4 to 64%. Based on lead isotopic ratios (²⁰⁶/²⁰⁷Pb and ²⁰⁸/²⁰⁶Pb), it was found that geologic materials and industrial pollution were the main sources of heavy metals in the PRE sediments.
