Nutrient loading is a major threat to estuaries and coastal environments worldwide, therefore, it is critical that we have good monitoring tools to detect early signs of degradation in these ecologically important and vulnerable ecosystems. Traditionally, bottom-dwelling macroinvertebrates have been used for ecological health assessment but recent advances in environmental genomics mean we can now characterize less visible forms of biodiversity, offering a more holistic view of the ecosystem and potentially providing early warning signals of disturbance. We carried out a manipulative nutrient enrichment experiment (0, 150 and 600 g N fertilizer m⁻²) in two estuaries in New Zealand to assess the effects of nutrient loading on benthic communities. After seven months of enrichment, environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding was used to examine the response of eukaryotic (18S rRNA), diatom only (rbcL) and bacterial (16S rRNA) communities. Multivariate analyses demonstrated changes in eukaryotic, diatom and bacterial communities in response to nutrient enrichment at both sites, despite differing environmental conditions. These patterns aligned with changes in macrofaunal communities identified using traditional morphological techniques, confirming concordance between disturbance indicators detected by eDNA and current monitoring approaches. Clear shifts in eukaryotic and bacterial indicator taxa were seen in response to nutrient loading while changes in diatom only communities were more subtle. Community changes were discernible between 0 and 150 g N m⁻² treatments, suggesting that estuary health assessment tools could be developed to detect early signs of degradation. Increasing variation in community structure associated with nutrient loading could also be used as an indicator of stress or approaching tipping points. This work represents a first step towards the development of molecular-based estuary monitoring tools, which could provide a more holistic and standardized approach to ecosystem health assessment with faster turn-around times and lower costs.

Urban parks are an important part of the urban ecological environment. The environmental quality of parks is related to human health. To evaluate sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils of urban parks and their possible health risks, soil samples from 122 parks in Beijing, China, were collected and analyzed. The total content of 16 PAHs between 0.066 and 6.867 mg/kg. Four-ring PAHs were predominant, followed by 5-ring PAHs, while the fraction of 2-ring PAHs was the lowest. The dominant PAHs sources were found to be coal combustion and oil fuels such as gasoline and diesel. A conditional inference tree (CIT) was used to identify the key influencing factors for PAHs. Traffic emissions was the most important factor, followed by coal consumption, as well as the history and location of the park. Incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) for urban park soil in Beijing were low under normal conditions. The soil PAHs exposure pathway risk for both children and adults decreased in the following order: ingestion > dermal contact > inhalation. The risk from soil in parks to children’s health is slightly higher than that of adults, although the health risk due to exposure to PAHs was not extraordinary. Ecosystem risk was negligible.

Ice and sediment cores, peat bogs and tree rings are useful proxy records for reconstructing historical air pollution events. However, these indirect measurements are subject to interferences caused by environmental perturbations including global climate change. Therefore, using multiple proxy records has advantages in constraining the analytical findings. In this study, we utilized the chronological record of atmospheric deposition preserved in vegetation succession ecosystems in the deglaciated region for reconstructing historical pollution events. The rate of Cd accumulation in the forest chronosequence zone was investigated in a deglaciated area of the Tibetan Plateau. The results obtained through this novel approach are consistent with the variations of Cd concentration recorded in tree-ring, showing a 4–7 times increase of atmospheric Cd deposition from the 1890s to the early 1970s followed by a decrease from the mid-1970s–2000s. The Cd pollution record indicates that elevated atmospheric Cd release occurred in regions of Southwest China and South Asia due to the rapid industrial development until 1970 followed by coordinated efforts in controlling air emissions after mid-1970s.

The occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk of 10 quinolones (QNs) were investigated in the water and sediment samples from Baiyangdian Lake, China. The field samplings were conducted in April (dry season) and August (wet season) 2018, the results showed that QNs was extensively distributed in the Baiyangdian Lake. For the occurrence, Flumequine (FLU) and Ofloxacin (OFL) were the most detected QNs in Baiyangdian Lake. For the temporal variation, the sum concentration of QNs in water and sediment were ranged from 153 ng/L to 3093 ng/L and from 40.1 ng/g to 1475 ng/g in April, while ranged from 3.83 ng/L to 769 ng/L and from 20.3 ng/g to 373 ng/g in August. For the spatial variation, all of QNs exhibited significance difference in concentration at different sampling areas. Furthermore, PNEC plays an important role in ecological risk assessment, thus the PNECs of FLU and OFL were derived by assessment factors (AF), species sensitivity distribution (SSD), and AQUATOX model methods. The results showed that: PNECAFs, PNECSSDs, and PNECAQUATOXs were 18.7 μg/L, 196 μg/L, and 128 μg/L for FLU, respectively; and were 0.021 μg/L, 4.40 μg/L, and 3.00 μg/L for OFL, respectively. The PNECs for FLU and OFL derived by three approaches showed the rank of: PNECSSDs > PNECAQUATOXs > PNECAFs; while the risk quotients (RQs) followed the other rank of: RQSSDs < RQAQUATOXs < RQAFs. The results was indicated that the indirect ecological effects plays an important role in the derived PNECs for QNs, without considering the indirect ecological effects in natural ecosystem can lead to under-protective or over-protective PNECs (RQs) for chemicals. Therefore, AQUATOX model can be applied in deriving PNECs during the ecological risk assessment.

Bacteria involved with ecosystem N cycling in the rhizosphere of submerged macrophytes are abundant and diverse. Any declines of submerged macrophytes can have a great influence on the abundance and diversity of denitrifying bacteria and anammox bacteria. Natural decline, tardy decline, and sudden decline methods were applied to cultivated Potamogeton crispus. The abundance of anammox bacteria and nirS denitrifying bacteria in rhizosphere sediment were detected using real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR of 16S rRNA, and phylogenetic trees were constructed to analyze the diversities of these two microbes. The results indicated that the concentration of NH₄⁺ in pore water gradually increased with increasing distances from the roots, whereas, the concentration of NO₃⁻ showed a reverse trend. The abundance of anammox bacteria and nirS denitrifying bacteria in sediment of declined P. crispus populations decreased significantly over time. The abundance of these two microbes in the sudden decline group were significantly higher (P > 0.05) than the other decline treatment groups. Furthermore, the abundances of these two microbes were positively correlated, with RDA analyses finding the mole ratio of NH₄⁺/NO₃⁻ being the most important positive factor affecting microbe abundance. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the anammox bacteria Brocadia fuigida and Scalindua wagneri, and nirS denitrifying bacteria Herbaspirillum and Pseudomonas, were the dominant species in declined P. crispus sediment. We suggest the sudden decline of submerged macrophytes would increase the abundance of anammox bacteria and denitrifying bacteria in a relatively short time.

As a strong reductant and highly active alkali, hydrazine (N2H4) has been widely used in chemical industry, pharmaceutical manufacturing and agricultural production. However, its high acute toxicity poses a threat to ecosystem and human health. In the present study, a ratiometric fluorescent probe for the detection of N2H4 was designed, utilizing dicyanoisophorone as the fluorescent group and 4-bromobutyryl moiety as the recognition site. 4-(2-(3-(dicyanomethylene)-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-1-enyl) phenyl 4-brobutanoate (DDPB) was readily synthesized and could specially sense N2H4 via an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) pathway. The cyclization cleavage reaction of N2H4 with a 4-bromobutyryl group released phenolic hydroxyl group and reversed the ICT process between hydroxy group and fluorophore, turning on the fluorescence in the DDPB-N2H4 complexes. DDPB exhibits a low cytotoxicity, reasonable cell permeability, a large Stokes shift (186 nm) and a low detection limit (86.3 nM). The quantitative determination of environmental water systems and the visualization fluorescence of DDPB test strips provides a strong evidence for the applications of DDPB. In addition, DDPB is suitable for the fluorescence imaging of exogenous N2H4 in HeLa cells and zebrafish.

Modification of nighttime light levels by artificial illumination (artificial light at night; ALAN) is a rapidly increasing form of human disturbance that affects natural environments worldwide. Light in natural environments influences a variety of physiological and ecological processes directly and indirectly and, as a result, the effects of light pollution on species, communities and ecosystems are emerging as significant. Small prey species may be particularly susceptible to ALAN as it makes them more conspicuous and thus more vulnerable to predation by visually oriented predators. Understanding the effects of disturbance like ALAN is especially important for threatened or endangered species as impacts have the potential to impede recovery, but due to low population numbers inherent to at-risk species, disturbance is rarely studied. The endangered Stephens’ kangaroo rat (SKR), Dipodomys stephensi, is a nocturnal rodent threatened by habitat destruction from urban expansion. The degree to which ALAN impacts their recovery is unknown. In this study, we examined the effects of ALAN on SKR foraging decisions across a gradient of light intensity for two types of ALAN, flood and bug lights (756 vs 300 lumen, respectfully) during full and new moon conditions. We found that ALAN decreased probability of resource patch depletion compared to controls. Moreover, lunar illumination, distance from the light source and light type interacted to alter SKR foraging. Under the new moon, SKR were consistently more likely to deplete patches under control conditions, but there was an increasing probability of patch depletion with distance from the source of artificial light. The full moon dampened SKR foraging activity and the effect of artificial lights. Our study underscores that ALAN reduces habitat suitability, and raises the possibility that ALAN may impede the recovery of at-risk nocturnal rodents.

Microplastics are ubiquitous in marine environments. Sediments and marine organisms are recognized as the carriers and final destinations of microplastics. However, research on the concentration and abundance of microplastics in deep-sea sediments and organisms is limited. In this study, samples of sediments and organisms were collected from deep-sea locations of the western Pacific Ocean, with the depth ranging from 4601 m to 5732 m. Microplastics were extracted from the samples and analyzed by micro-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The average abundance of microplastics in the sediments was 240 items per kg dry weight of sediment. The microplastics were predominantly fibrous in shape (52.5%), blue in color (45.0%), and less than 1 mm in size (90.0%). The most commonly detected polymers were poly(propylene-ethylene) copolymer (40.0%) and polyethylene terephthalate (27.5%). The concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which are representatives of persistent organic pollutants, in the pore water of sediment samples were also investigated. A significant correlation between the distribution of microplastics and the PCB concentrations in sediments was found (P = 0.016). Microplastics were also detected in deep-sea organisms (i.e., Crinoidea, Pheronematidae, Ophiuroidea, and Gammaridea) in the sampling region, with an abundance of 0–3 items per individual biological sample. This assessment of microplastics in deep-sea sediments and benthic organisms of the western Pacific Ocean confirms that microplastic pollution exists in the deep-sea ecosystems of this region.

Organisms and ecosystems are generally exposed to mixtures of chemicals rather than to individual chemicals, but there have been relatively few detailed analyses of the mixtures of pesticides that occur in surface waters. This study examined over 2600 water samples, analysed for between 21 and 47 pesticides, from 15 waterways that discharge to the lagoon of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2015. Essentially all the samples (99.8%) contained detectable concentrations (>limit of detection) of pesticides and pesticide mixtures. Approximately, 10% of the samples contained no quantifiable (>limit of reporting) pesticides, 10% contained one quantifiable pesticide and 80% contained quantifiable mixtures of 2–20 pesticides. Approximately 82% of samples that contained quantifiable mixtures had more than two modes of action (MoAs), but only approximately 6% had five or more MoAs. The mode, average and median number of quantifiable pesticides in all the samples were 2, 5.1 and 4, respectively. The most commonly detected compounds both individually and in mixtures were the pesticides atrazine, diuron, imidacloprid, hexazinone, 2,4-D, and the degradation product desethylatrazine. The number of pesticides and modes of action of pesticides in mixtures differed spatially and were affected by land use. Waterways draining catchments where sugar cane was a major land use had mixtures with the most pesticides.

Samples from two reservoirs with eutrophication problems, located in Pontevedra and Ourense (Northwestern Spain), were cultured, along with a third crop from a reservoir with no problems detected in Ourense (Northwestern Spain). The samples were grown under the same conditions (with an average temperature of 21 ± 2 °C, and a 3000 lux light intensity) in triplicate, and their growth, absorbance and pH were studied. High correlation values were obtained for pH and cellular growth (R² ≥ 95%). The water from Salas showed the greatest microalgal growth (0.15 × 10⁶ cells/ml to 31.70 × 10⁶ cells/ml of Microcystis sp. for the last day of culturing) and the greatest increase in pH (5.72–9.02). In all the cultures studied here, the main species that reproduced was Microcystis sp., which can produce neurotoxins and hepatotoxins. In addition, water samples were cultured with sediments of their own reservoir and with others to observe their evolution. The sediments studied in this case were rich in biotites, which can lead phosphate to be a limiting factor for phytoplankton due to the formation and sedimentation of insoluble salts of ferric phosphate. In crops grown with sediments from the Salas reservoir, actinobacteria developed which can inhibit microalgal growth. The study of the growth of cyanobacteria and possible methods of inhibiting them directly concerns the quality of water and its ecosystems, avoiding pollution and impact on ecosystems.
