The desorption rate is an important factor determining cadmium (Cd) ecotoxicity and pollution remediation in soils. The pedotransfer functions (PTFs) of desorption rate coefficients of fresh Cd in soils have been developed in literature. We hypothesized that the aging of Cd pollution would alter Cd desorption process. Taking historically polluted soils as the object, this study aimed at testing the hypothesis and developing new PTFs of desorption rate coefficients for historical Cd. 15 d batch extraction experiments and 13 kinetic models were employed to define Cd desorption rate coefficients in 27 historically polluted soil samples. Compared with fresh Cd, the desorption rate coefficients of historical Cd were lower, and the break time of biphasic desorption processes was retarded to 3 d (4320 min). Different with the usual models for fresh Cd desorption (e.g. parabolic diffusion and two constant rate models), the best models to mimic the historical Cd desorption processes were the pseudo first order, logarithmic, Elovich, and simple Elovich models. The rate-limiting step controlling Cd desorption was changed from the intraparticle diffusion to the interface reaction with aging of pollution. New PTFs of desorption rate coefficients of historical Cd were established (R² ≥ 0.71). Cd desorption rate coefficients increased with organic matter and clay contents, but decreased with oxalate extractable Fe content, solution pH, cation exchange capacity, and silt content. The key soil properties influencing desorption rate coefficients were not altered by the aging of pollution. The developed PTFs could guide us to adjusting the ecotoxicity and pollution remediation of Cd in historically polluted field soils.

Zeolite-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (Z-NZVI) has great potential for metal(loid) removal, but its encapsulation mechanisms and ecological risks in real soil systems are not completely clear. We conducted long-term incubation experiments to gain new insights into the interactions between metal(loid)s (Cd, Pb, As) and Z-NZVI in naturally contaminated farmland soils, as well as the alteration of indigenous bacterial communities during soil remediation. With the pH-adjusting and adsorption capacities, 30 g kg⁻¹ Z-NZVI amendment significantly decreased the available metal(loid) concentrations by 10.2–96.8% and transformed them into strongly-bound fractions in acidic and alkaline soils after 180 d. An innovative magnetic separation of Z-NZVI from soils followed by XRD and XPS characterizations revealed that B-type ternary complexation, heterogeneous coprecipitation, and/or concurrent redox reactions of metal(loid)s, especially the formation of Cd₃(AsO₄)₂, PbFe₂(AsO₄)₂(OH)₂, and As⁰, occurred only under specific soil conditions. Sequencing of 16S rDNA using Illumina MiSeq platform indicated that temporary shifts in iron-resistant/sensitive, pH-sensitive, denitrifying, and metal-resistant bacteria after Z-NZVI addition were ultimately eliminated because soil characteristics drove the re-establishment of indigenous bacterial community. Meanwhile, Z-NZVI recovered the basic activities of bacterial DNA replication and denitrification functions in soils. These results confirm that Z-NZVI is promising for the long-term remediation of metal(loid)s contaminated farmland soil without significant ecotoxicity.

Composting is a solid waste management alternative that avoids the emission of methane associated with its disposal in landfill and reduces or eliminates the need for chemical fertilisers if compost is applied. The main objective of this study was to analyse the environmental burdens of composting as a way to achieve a more circular valorisation of wine waste. To do so, with the purpose of identifying optimal operational conditions and determining the “hotspots” of the process, the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology was used. The consumption of diesel fuel in machinery was determined to be the main critical point in the environmental effects of the system, followed by the transport and distribution of the compost. After the application of compost instead of mineral fertilisers, corn, tomato and strawberry crops would have a better environmental performance in most impact categories. In this sense, a maximum improvement of 65% in terrestrial ecotoxicity is achieved in strawberry cultivation. In light of the results obtained, it is demonstrated that composting is a suitable way of organic waste valorisation according to Circular Economy principles.

In the context of global warming, an important issue is that many pesticides become more toxic, putting non-target organisms at higher risk of pesticide exposure. Eremias argus (a native Chinese lizard) was selected as animal model in this study. As a kind of poikilothermic vertebrate, E.argus is sensitive to temperature change. The experimental design [(with or without L-Glufosinate-ammonium (L-GLA) pollution × two temperatures (25 and 30 °C)] was used in this study for 90 days to identify the chronic effects of the pesticide–temperature interaction on the lizards’ neuroendocrine-regulated reproduction. Survival rate, body weight, clutch characteristics, testicular histopathology, the content of neurotransmitters and related enzyme activity, the level of sex steroid, the expression of Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), antioxidant system, the accumulation and degradation of L-GLA were examined. Results showed that L-GLA disrupt reproduction of lizards through hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad (HPG) axis. In addition, temperature can not only change the environmental behavior of pesticides, but also alter the physiological characteristics of lizards. Thus, our results emphasized that temperature is an essential abiotic factor that should not be overlooked in ecotoxicological studies.

Metalaxyl is a broad-spectrum chiral fungicide that used for the protection of plants, however extensive use of metalaxyl resulted in serious environmental problems. Thus, a study on the detoxification mechanism in algae/cyanobacteria and their ability for phycoremediation is highly recommended. Here, we investigated the physiological and biochemical responses of two cyanobacterial species; Anabaena laxa and Nostoc muscorum to R-metalaxyl toxicity as well as their ability as phycoremediators. Two different levels of R-metalaxyl, at mild (10 mg/L) and high dose (25 mg/L), were applied for one-week. We found that A. laxa absorbed and accumulated more intracellular R-metalaxyl compared to N. muscorum. R-metalaxyl, which triggered a dose-based reduction in cell growth, photosynthetic pigment content, and photosynthetic key enzymes’ activities i.e., phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) and ribulose‒1,5‒bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCo). These decreases were significantly less pronounced in A. laxa. On the other hand, R-metalaxyl significantly induced oxidative damage markers, e.g., H₂O₂ levels, lipid peroxidation (MDA), protein oxidation and NADPH oxidase activity. However, these increases were also lower in A. laxa compared to N. muscorum. To alleviate R-metalaxyl toxicity, A. laxa induced the polyphenols, flavonoids, tocopherols and glutathione (GSH) levels as well as peroxidase (POX), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione-s-transferase (GST) enzyme activities. On the contrary, the significant induction of antioxidants in N. muscorum was restricted to ascorbate, catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) enzyme activities. Although A. laxa accumulated more R-metalaxyl, it experienced less stress due to subsequent induction of antioxidants. Therefore, A. laxa may be a promising R-metalaxyl phycoremediator. Our results provided basic data for understanding the ecotoxicology of R-metalaxyl contamination in aquatic habitats and the toxicity indices among cyanobacteria.

The effects of microplastics pollution on the marine ecosystem have aroused attention. Copepod grazing stimulates dimethylsulfide (DMS) release from dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) in phytoplankton, but the effect of microplastics exposure on DMS and DMSP production during copepod feeding has not yet been revealed. Here, we investigated the effects of polyethylene (PE) and polyamide-nylon 6 (PA 6) microplastics on ecotoxicity and DMS/DMSP production in the copepod Tigriopus japonicus. The microplastics had detrimental effects on feeding, egestion, reproduction, survival, and DMS and DMSP production in T. japonicus and presented significant dose-response relationships. The 24 h-EC50 for ingestion rates (IRs) of female T. japonicus exposed to PE and PA 6 were 57.6 and 58.9 mg L⁻¹, respectively. In comparison, the body size of the copepods was not significantly affected by the microplastics during one generation of culture. Ingesting fluorescently labeled microplastics confirmed that microplastics were ingested by T. japonicus and adhered to the organs of the body surface. T. japonicus grazing promoted DMS release originating from degradation of DMSP in algal cells. Grazing-activated DMS production decreased because of reduced IR in the presence of microplastics. These results provide new insight into the biogeochemical cycle of sulfur during feeding in copepods exposed to microplastics.

The use of some systemic insecticides has been banned in Europe because they are toxic to beneficial insects when these feed on nectar. A recent study shows that systemic insecticides can also kill beneficial insects when they feed on honeydew. Honeydew is the sugar-rich excretion of hemipterans and is the most abundant carbohydrate source for beneficial insects such as pollinators and biological control agents in agroecosystems. Here, we investigated whether the toxicity of contaminated honeydew depends on i) the hemipteran species that excretes the honeydew; ii) the active ingredient, and iii) the beneficial insect that feeds on it. HPLC-MS/MS analyses demonstrated that the systemic insecticides pymetrozine and flonicamid, which are commonly used in Integrated Pest Management programs, were present in honeydew excreted by the mealybug Planococcus citri. However, only pymetrozine was detected in honeydew excreted by the whitefly Aleurothixus floccosus. Toxicological studies demonstrated that honeydew excreted by mealybugs feeding on trees treated either with flonicamid or pymetrozine increased the mortality of the hoverfly Sphaerophoria rueppellii, but did not affect the parasitic wasp Anagyrus vladimiri. Honeydew contaminated with flonicamid was more toxic for the hoverfly than that contaminated with pymetrozine. Collectively, our data demonstrate that systemic insecticides commonly used in IPM programs can contaminate honeydew and kill beneficial insects that feed on it, with their toxicity being dependent on the active ingredient and hemipteran species that excretes the honeydew. Insecticides recommended in Integrated Pest Management programs reach honeydew and kill beneficial insects that feed on it.

While extreme high temperatures are an important aspect of global warming, their effects on organisms are relatively understudied, especially in ecotoxicology. Sequential exposure to heat spikes and pesticides is a realistic scenario as both are typically transient stressors and are expected to further increase in frequency under global warming. We tested the effects of exposure to a lethal heat spike and subsequently to an ecologically relevant lethal pulse exposure of the pesticide chlorpyrifos in the larvae of mosquito Culex pipiens. The heat spike caused direct and delayed mortality, and resulted in a higher heat tolerance and activity of acetylcholinesterase, and a lower fat content in the survivors. The chlorpyrifos exposure caused mortality, accelerated growth rate, and decreased the heat tolerance and the activity of acetylcholinesterase. The preceding heat spike did not change how chlorpyrifos reduced the heat tolerance. Notably, the preceding heat spike did lower the lethal effect of the pesticide, which makes an important novel finding at the interface of ecotoxicology and global change biology, and adds a new dimension to the “climate-induced toxicant sensitivity” (CITS) concept. This may be due to both survival selection and cross-tolerance, and therefore likely a widespread phenomenon. Our results emphasize the importance of including extreme high temperatures as an important transient global change stressor in ecotoxicology.

Despite the ubiquitous and persistent presence of microplastic (MP) in marine ecosystems, knowledge of its potential harmful ecological effects is low. In this work, we assessed the risk of floating MP (1 μm–5 mm) to marine ecosystems by comparing ambient concentrations in the global ocean with available ecotoxicity data. The integration of twenty-three species-specific effect threshold concentration data in a species sensitivity distribution yielded a median unacceptable level of 1.21 ∗ 10⁵ MP m⁻³ (95% CI: 7.99 ∗ 10³–1.49 ∗ 10⁶ MP m⁻³). We found that in 2010 for 0.17% of the surface layer (0–5 m) of the global ocean a threatening risk would occur. By 2050 and 2100, this fraction increases to 0.52% and 1.62%, respectively, according to the worst-case predicted future plastic discharge into the ocean. Our results reveal a spatial and multidecadal variability of MP-related risk at the global ocean surface. For example, we have identified the Mediterranean Sea and the Yellow Sea as hotspots of marine microplastic risks already now and even more pronounced in future decades.

Lead intoxication is an important threat to human health and a large number of wildlife species. Animals are exposed to several sources of lead highlighting hunting ammunition and lead that is bioavailable in topsoil. Disentangling the role of each in lead exposure is an important conservation issue, particularly for species potentially affected by lead poisoning, such as vultures. The identification of lead sources in vultures and other species has been classically addressed by means of stable-isotope comparisons, but the extremely varied isotope signatures found in ammunition hinders this identification when it overlaps with topsoil signatures. In addition, assumptions related to the exposure of individual vultures to lead sources have been made without knowledge of the actual feeding grounds exploited by the birds. Here, we combine lead concentration analysis in blood, novel stable isotope approaches to assign the origin of the lead and GPS tracking data to investigate the main foraging grounds of two Iberian griffon vulture populations (N = 58) whose foraging ranges differ in terms of topsoil lead concentration and intensity of big game hunting activity. We found that the lead signature in vultures was closer to topsoil than to ammunition, but this similarity decreased significantly in the area with higher big game hunting activity. In addition, attending to the individual home ranges of the tracked birds, models accounting for the intensity of hunting activity better explained the higher blood lead concentration in vultures than topsoil exposure. In spite of that, our finding also show that lead exposure from topsoil is more important than previously thought.
