Constructed wetlands are an environmentally friendly and economically efficient sewage treatment technology, with fillers playing an important role in treatment processes. However, traditional wetland fillers (e.g. zeolite) are known to be imperfect because of their low adsorption capacity. In this paper, the adsorbent sodium titanate nano fillers (T3-F) was synthesized as an alternative to traditional filler with sodium titanate nanofibers (T3) as the raw material, epoxy adhesive as the adhesive agent and NH₄HCO₃ as the pore-making agent. The properties of T3-F were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), porosity. The effect of different parameters such as pH, co-existing ions, contact time, initial metal ion concentrations and temperature was investigated for heavy metal adsorption. The results showed that the adsorption of heavy metal by T3-F followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacities for Cu²⁺, Pb²⁺, Zn²⁺, Cd²⁺ were about 1.5–1.98 mmol/g, which were 4–5 times that of zeolite, the traditional commonly used filler. Moreover, T3-F could entrap toxic ions irreversibly and maintain structural stability in the adsorption process, which solved the issue of secondary pollution. In the presence of competing ions, the adsorption efficiency for Pb²⁺ was not reduced significantly. Adsorption was strongest at high pH. From the results and characterization, an adsorption mechanism was suggested. This study lays a foundation for the practical application of T3-F as a constructed wetland filler in the future.

Benzo(a)pyren-7,8-dihydrodiol-9,10-epoxide (BPDE) is an endocrine disrupter and ultimate carcinogenic product of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP). Numerous studies have shown that BPDE causes trophoblast-related diseases, such as preeclampsia, growth restriction or miscarriages. However, the underlying mechanism, especially the mitochondria-related BPDE-induced trophoblast dysfunction remains unknown. In this study, we examined mitochondrial functions in BPDE-induced human trophoblast cell line Swan 71. BPDE decreased cell ability, attenuated cell invasion and HCG secretion, induced cell apoptosis, decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and MDA, and decreased SOD activity in a dose-dependent manner. In the mechanism, BPDE significantly increased pro-apoptosis protein (P53 and Bak1) and decreased anti-apoptosis protein (Bcl-2). Furthermore, the protein expression levels of mitochondrial fusion genes (Mfn1, Mfn2, and OPA1) were decreased and those of fission genes (Fis1 and Drp1) were increased with increasing concentrations of BPDE and incubation time, resulting in the release of Cyt c and activation of Caspase 3, which irreversibly induced trophoblast cell apoptosis. This study reveals the mechanism of dysfunction of trophoblast cells through cell apoptosis due to the disorder of mitochondrial fission/fusion after exposure to BPDE, providing a further experimental understanding the adverse effects of BaP on trophoblast cells in early pregnancy.

Due to their terrestrial habitats and aquatic reproduction, many amphibians are both very vulnerable and highly suitable bioindicators. The plasticizer bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most produced chemical substances worldwide, and knowledge on its impacts on humans and animals is mounting. BPA is used for the industrial production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins and found in a multitude of consumer products. Studies on BPA have involved mammals, fish and the fully aquatic anuran model Xenopus laevis. However, our knowledge about the sexual development of non-model, often semi-terrestrial anuran amphibians remains poor. Using a recently developed experimental design, we simultaneously applied BPA to two non-model species (Hyla arborea, Hylidae; Bufo viridis, Bufonidae) and the model X. laevis (Pipidae), compared their genetic and phenotypic sex for detection of sex reversals, and studied sexual development, focusing on anatomical and histological features of gonads. We compared three concentrations of BPA (0.023, 2.28 and 228 μg/L) to control groups in a high-standard flow-through-system, and tested whether conclusions, drawn from the model species, can be extrapolated to non-model anurans. In contrast to previous studies on fish and Xenopus, often involving dosages much higher than most environmental pollution data, we show that BPA causes neither the development of mixed sex nor of sex-reversed individuals (few, seemingly BPA-independent sex reversals) in all focal species. However, environmentally relevant concentrations, as low as 0.023 μg/L, were sufficient to provoke species-specific anatomically and histologically detectable impairments of gonads, and affected morphological traits of metamorphs. As the intensity of these effects differed between the three species, our data imply that BPA diversely affects amphibians with different evolutionary history, sex determination systems and larval ecologies. These results highlight the role of amphibians as a sensitive group that is responsive to environmental pollution.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is widely used industrially to produce polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Numerous studies document the harmful effects caused by low-dose BPA exposure especially on nervous systems and behavior in experimental animals such as mice and rats. Here, we exposed embryos of a model chordate, Ciona intestinalis, to seawater containing BPA to evaluate adverse effects on embryonic development and on the swimming behavior of subsequent larvae. Ciona is ideal because its larva develops rapidly and has few cells. The rate of larval hatching decreased in a dose-dependent manner with exposures to BPA above 3 μM; swimming behavior was also affected in larvae emerging from embryos exposed to 1 μM BPA. Adverse effects were most severe on fertilized eggs exposed to BPA within 7 h post-fertilization. Ciona shares twelve nuclear receptors with mammals, and BPA is proposed to disturb the physiological functions of one or more of these.

To understand the fate of plastic in oceans and the interaction with marine organisms, we investigated the incorporation of (bio)polymers and microplastics in selected benthic foraminiferal species by applying FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) microscopy. This experimental methodology has been applied to cultured benthic foraminifera Rosalina globularis, and to in situ foraminifera collected in a plastic remain found buried into superficial sediment in the Mediterranean seafloor, Rosalina bradyi, Textularia bocki and Cibicidoides lobatulus. In vitro foraminifera were treated with bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) molecule to explore its internalization in the cytoplasm. Benthic foraminifera are marine microbial eukaryotes, sediment-dwelling, commonly short-lived and with reproductive cycles which play a central role in global biogeochemical cycles of inorganic and organic compounds. Despite the recent advances and investigations into the occurrence, distribution, and abundance of plastics, including microplastics, in marine environments, there remain relevant knowledge gaps, particularly on their effects on the benthic protists. No study, to our knowledge, has documented the molecular scale effect of plastics on foraminifera.Our analyses revealed three possible ways through which plastic-related molecules and plastic debris can enter a biogeochemical cycle and may affect the ecosystems: 1) foraminifera in situ can grow on plastic remains, namely C. lobatulus, R. bradyi and T. bocki, showing signals of oxidative stress and protein aggregation in comparison with R. globularis cultured in negative control; 2) DEHP can be incorporated in the cytoplasm of calcareous foraminifera, as observed in R. globularis; 3) microplastic debris, identified as epoxy resin, can be found in the cytoplasm and the agglutinated shell of T. bocki.We hypothesize that plastic waste and their associated additives may produce modifications related to the biomineralization process in foraminifera. This effect would be added to those induced by ocean acidification with negative consequences on the foraminiferal biogenic carbon (C) storage capacity.

In this paper problems associated with preparation of aqueous standard of highly hydrophobic compounds such as partial precipitation, being lost on the surfaces, low solubility in water and limited sample volume for accurate determination of their distribution coefficients are addressed. The following work presents two approaches that utilize blade thin film microextraction (TFME) to investigate partitioning of UV filters and biocides to humic acid (dissolved organic carbon) and sediment. A steady-state concentration of target analytes in water was generated using a flow-through aqueous standard generation (ASG) system. Dialysis membranes, a polytetrafluoroethylene permeation tube, and a frit porous (0.5 μm) coated by epoxy glue were basic elements used for preparation of the ASG system. In the currently presented study, negligible depletion TFME using hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) and octadecyl silica-based (C18) sorbents was employed towards the attainment of free concentration values of target analytes in the studied matrices. Thin film geometry provided a large volume of extraction phase, which improved the sensitivity of the method towards highly matrix-bound analytes. Extractions were performed in the equilibrium regime so as to prevent matrix effects and with aims to reach maximum method sensitivity for all analytes under study. Partitioning of analytes on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was investigated in ASG to facilitate large sample volume conditions. Binding percentages and DOC distribution coefficients (Log KDOC) ranged from 20 to 98% and 3.71–6.72, respectively. Furthermore, sediment-water partition coefficients (Kd), organic-carbon normalized partition coefficients (Log KOC), and DOC distribution coefficients (Log KDOC) were investigated in slurry sediment, and ranged from 33 to 2860, 3.31–5.24 and 4.52–5.75 Lkg-1, respectively. The obtained results demonstrated that investigations utilizing ASG and TFME can yield reliable binding information for compounds with high log KOW values. This information is useful for study of fate, transport, and ecotoxicological effects of UV filters and biocides in aquatic environment.

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a type of Endocrine Disrupting Compound (EDC) that is being widely used in the production of polycarbonate and epoxy resins. Last few years, the human exposure to BPA has been extensively high due to continuous increment in Annual Growth Rate (AGR) of BPA global market. The presence and transportation of BPA in the environment could cause serious damage to the aquatic life and human health. In this paper, we have reviewed the literature on the exposure and toxicity mechanism of BPA and advanced analytical techniques for detection of BPA in environment and human beings. The study indicated that BPA can cause damaging effects on numerous tissues and organs, including reproductive system, metabolic dysfunction, respiratory system, immune system and central nervous system. On the basis of reported studies on animal indicates that the exposure of BPA can be the carcinogenic and responsible for causing a variety of cancers like ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer and liver cancer. This review paper mainly focused on current progress in BPA removal technologies in last ten years (2012–2022). This paper presenting the comprehensive overview of individual removal technology including-adsorption, photocatalysis/photodegradation, ozonation/advance oxidation, photo-fenton, membrane/nanofilters, and biodegradation along with removal mechanism. The extensive literature study shows that each technology has its own removal mechanism and limitation in BPA treatment. In adsorption and membrane separation process, most of BPA has been treated by electrostatic interaction, hydrogen boning and π-π interations mechanism. Whereas in degradation mechanism, O* and OH* species has been played major role in BPA removal. Some factors could be altered the removal potential and efficiency of BPA removal. This review paper will provide a useful guide in providing directions for future investigation to address the problem of BPA-containing wastewater treatment.

Waste residues and acidic effluents (post-processing of E-waste) released into the local surroundings cause perilous environmental threats and potential risks to human health. Only limited research and information are available toward the sustainable management of waste residues generated post resource recovery of E-waste components. In the present study, the manual processing of obsolete computer (keyboard, monitor, CPU, and mouse) and chemical leaching of waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) (motherboard, hard drive, DVD drive, and power supply) were performed for urban mining. The toxicity characteristics of typical pollutants in the residues of the WPCBs (post chemical leaching) were studied by toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) test. Manual dismantling techniques resulted in an efficient urban mining concept with an overall average profit estimation of INR 2513.73/US$ 34.59. The chemical leaching of WPCBs showed a high concentration of metal leaching like Cu (229662 ± 575.3 mg/kg) and Pb (36785.67 ± 13.07 mg/kg) in the motherboard after stripping epoxy coating. The toxicity test revealed that the concentration of Cu (245.746 ± 0.016 mg/l) in the treated waste residue and Cu (430.746 ± 0.0015 mg/l) and Pb (182.09 ± 0.0035 mg/l) in the non-treated waste residue exceeded the threshold limit. The concentrations of other elements As, Cd, Co, Cr, Ag, Mn, Zn, Ni, Fe, Se, and In were within the permissible limit. Hence, the waste residue stands non-hazardous except Cu and Pb. Stripping out the epoxy coating of WPCBs enhances the metal leaching concentrations. The study highlighted that efficient and appropriate E-waste urban mining has immense potential in tracing the waste scrap into secondary resources. This study also emphasized that the final processed waste residue (left unattended or discarded due to lack of appropriate skill and technology) can be taken into consideration and exploited for value-added materials.

Microplastics have become an inevitable component of our environment. Worldwide, free public fountains are common and one of the best sources of drinking water which are being installed with one of the viewpoints of reducing single-use plastics bottle consumption. However, the state of knowledge on how microplastics might be affecting in those free public drinking fountains is unknown. In this study, free drinking water fountains from 42 metro stations in Mexico City were being looked into for the occurrence of microplastics and investigated their shape type, size, abundance, distribution, polymer composition and surface morphology. Microplastics were detected in all the samples analyzed. The results revealed the significant abundance of microplastics ranging from 5 ± 2 to 91 ± 14 L⁻¹ in drinking water with an overall average of 18 ± 7 microplastics L⁻¹. Transparent fibers (69%) were predominant in the identified microplastics followed by blue (24%) and red colored (7%) fibers. The most frequent microplastics dimensions ranged between 0.1 and 1 mm which is approximately 75% of the total microplastics. Micro-Raman spectroscopy analysis indicated that microplastics contained in drinking water were mainly polyesters (poly (trimethylene terephthalate)) and epoxy resin suggesting the possible contribution of wastewater discharges for microplastics contamination. Thus, this study findings show that free public drinking water fountains are potential microplastics hotspot for human consumption and provide useful references for mitigation measures.

The abiotic transformation of nanomaterials in the natural environment can significantly affect their fate, transport, and effects. We observed that the adsorption affinities of graphene oxide nanoparticles (GONPs) for both phenanthrene and 1-naphthol were profoundly enhanced in the presence of sulfide, an environmentally relevant reductant, with doses as low as 0.5 mM Na2S per 10 mg/L GONPs. For phenanthrene adsorption enhancement was predominantly caused by the increased surface hydrophobicity from Na2S treatment. For 1-naphthol, however, adsorption enhancement was caused mainly by the conversion of the epoxy/ether groups on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) to the phenolic hydroxyl and carbonyl groups, which allowed more significant H-bonding between 1-naphthol and GONPs. The findings of this study underline that abiotic transformation of GO not only affects the stability and mobility of GONPs, but also influences the adsorptive interactions between GONPs and environmental contaminants, and consequently, may increase the environmental risks of GONPs.
