Since lichens lack roots and take up water, solutes and gases over the entire thallus surface, these organisms respond more sensitively to changes in atmospheric purity than vascular plants. After centuries where effects of sulphur dioxide and acidity were in the focus of research on atmospheric chemistry and lichens, recently the globally increased levels of ammonia and nitrate increasingly affect lichen vegetation and gave rise to intense research on the tolerance of lichens to nitrogen pollution. The present paper discusses the main findings on the uptake of ammonia and nitrate in the lichen symbiosis and to the tolerance of lichens to eutrophication. Ammonia and nitrate are both efficiently taken up under ambient conditions. The tolerance to high nitrogen levels depends, among others, on the capability of the photobiont to provide sufficient amounts of carbon skeletons for ammonia assimilation. Lowly productive lichens are apparently predisposed to be sensitive to excess nitrogen.

An eco-restoration system to remove excess nutrients and restore the agricultural ecosystem balance was proposed and applied from August 2006 to August 2008 in a residential-cropland complex area (1.4 × 105 m2) in Kunming, western China, where the self-purifying capacity of the agricultural ecosystem had been lost. The proposed eco-restoration system examined includes three main foci: farming management, bioremediation, and wastewater treatment. The results showed that the removal efficiencies of total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) from the complex wastewater were 83% and 88%, respectively. The Simpson’s diversity indices of macrophytes and zoobenthos indicated that the system had increased macrophyte and zoobenthic diversity as well as improved growth conditions of the plankton habitats. The results demonstrated that the proposed eco-restoration system is a promising approach for decreasing the output of nutrients from soil, improving agricultural ecosystem health, and minimizing the downstream eutrophication risk for surface waters.

In order to observe the spatial phosphorus (P) fractions transformations in sediments in relation to bacterial abundance and enzyme hydrolysing organic P-alkaline phosphatase (APA), samples from 35 stations from eutrophic Sulejow Reservoir were taken in spring after flood and in summer after cyanobacterial bloom breakdown. The results show pronounced fluctuations: decrease of average total P in sediments, despite organic matter delivery after cyanobacterial bloom, in parallel with increase of labile P (8.3%) and Ca-bounded P (16.6%) fractions and decline of organic P fraction (28.5%). Higher alkaline activity in sediments in the spring delivered nutrients to water column and supported cyanobacterial bloom development during the summer. Positive correlation between APA and organic P (r = 0.37, p < 0.01, n = 70) and negative with labile inorganic P (r = −0.44, p < 0.01, n = 70) in sediments proved significant role of the APA in phosphorus transformation in sediments and internal loading in the reservoir. During summer, APA was significantly related to bacterial number (r = 0.36, p < 0.01, n = 35) and bacterial abundance was correlated to organic matter content (r = 0.36, p < 0.01, n = 35). Such pattern of temporal variations of P transformation in sediments indicates order of solutions for enhancement of recultivation effects of eutrophic dam reservoirs: (1) reduction of organic matter supply in spring and (2) sediment inactivation during summer.

We report estimates of mercury (Hg) flux to the sediments of Lake Tahoe, California-Nevada: 2 and 15-20 µg/m²/year in preindustrial and modern sediments, respectively. These values result in a modern to preindustrial flux ratio of 7.5-10, which is similar to flux ratios recently reported for other alpine lakes in California, and greater than the value of 3 typically seen worldwide. We offer plausible hypotheses to explain the high flux ratios, including (1) proportionally less photoreduction and evasion of Hg with the onset of cultural eutrophication and (2) a combination of enhanced regional oxidation of gaseous elemental Hg and transport of the resulting reactive gaseous Hg to the surface with nightly downslope flows of air. If either of these mechanisms is correct, it could lead to local/regional solutions to lessen the impact of globally increasing anthropogenic emissions of Hg on Lake Tahoe and other alpine ecosystems.

Nitrification is a process in which ammonia is oxidized to nitrite (NO ₂ ⁻ ) that is further oxidized to nitrate (NO ₃ ⁻ ). The relations between these two steps and ambient ammonia concentrations were studied in surface water of Chinese shallow lakes with different trophic status. For the oxidations of both ammonia and NO ₂ ⁻ , more eutrophic lakes generally showed significantly higher potential and actual rates, which was linked with excessive ammonia concentrations. Additionally, both potential and actual rates for ammonia oxidation were higher than those for NO ₂ ⁻ oxidation in the more eutrophic lakes, while in the lakes with lower trophic status, both potential and actual rates for ammonia oxidation were almost equivalent to those for NO ₂ ⁻ oxidation. This can be explained by the excessive unionized ammonia (NH₃) concentration that inhibits nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in the more eutrophic lakes. The laboratory experiment with different ammonia concentrations, using the surface water in a eutrophic lake, showed that ammonia oxidation rates were proportional to the ammonia concentrations, but NO ₂ ⁻ oxidation rates did not increase in parallel. Furthermore, NO ₂ ⁻ oxidation was less associated with particles in natural water of the studied lakes. Without effective protection, it would be selectively inhibited by the excessive ammonia in hypereutrophic lakes, resulting in NO ₂ ⁻ accumulation. Shortly, the increased concentrations of ammonia cause a misbalance between the NO ₂ ⁻ -producing and the NO ₂ ⁻ -consuming processes, thereby exacerbating the lake eutrophication.

The objectives of this study were algal control and health assessments in a temperate eutrophic reservoir. Laboratory and mesocosm-scale in situ top-down biomanipulation experiments using planktivorous fishes and filter-feeding macroinvertebrates were conducted along with identification of the limiting nutrient using nutrient enrichment bioassays (NEBs), and ecosystem health evaluation based on the modified index of biological integrity model (Reservoir Ecosystem Health Assessment; REHA). Nutrients and N/P ratio analyses during 5 years revealed that the reservoir was in a eutrophic-hypertrophic state and that the key limiting nutrients, based on the NEBs, varied among seasons. Reservoir trophic guilds indicated declines in sensitive and endemic fish species and dominance of tolerant omnivores. Model values from multimetric REHAs averaged 25.8, indicating that the ecological health was in “fair to poor” condition. Overall microcosm biomanipulation tests suggested that macroinvertebrates, specifically Palaemon paucidens and Caridina denticulata, were effective candidates for phytoplankton control, compared to fishes. In situ mesocosm experiments revealed the highest removal rates with bluegreen algae and a phytoplankton size fraction of 2-19 μm (R e > 90%, Mann-Whitney U = 64.5-74.0, p < 0.01), the dominant fractions in the reservoir. Our biomanipulation technique may provide a key tool for efficient management and restoration of eutrophied reservoirs.

Although the climate change effects on plants have been a focus for more than two decades, such effects on aquatic species remain largely unknown. To evaluate the potential effects of elevated CO₂ on growth and nutrient uptake of Eichhornia crassipe Solms (commonly known as water hyacinth, the world's most significant invasive aquatic weed), plants were grown at two CO₂ concentrations (380 and 800 ppm) combined with four nutrient levels (oligo-, meso-, eu-, and hypertrophic) for 2 months. Overall, elevated CO₂ consistently enhanced plant growth at all nutrient levels, indicating more infestations of water hyacinth in future natural eutrophic waters. Moreover, the enhancement extent varied among nutrient availabilities, being more in eu- and hypertrophic levels and less in meso- and oligotrophic levels. Furthermore, the CO₂ enrichment-deduced assimilation was allocated more to plant roots than shoots which would improve the nutrient absorption capacity and mostly transferred to offspring ramets rather than maintained at the mother ramet which would benefit the vegetative reproduction. Finally, under elevated CO₂, although the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) contents of E. crassipe slightly decreased which might mean increased difficulties in preventing its infestation by reducing N and/or P in eutrophic waters, the total N and P accumulation increased suggesting higher bioremediation efficiency of using water hyacinth for water eutrophication.

Background, aim, and scope Mutagenic nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs) have been known to arise in the environment through direct emissions from combustion sources and nitration of PAHs, primarily in the atmosphere. In the marine environment, PAHs are one of the classic anthropogenic organic pollutants, while nitrite (NO ₂ ⁻ ) is produced naturally via various biological processes like imbalance in nitrification/denitrification or eutrophication and subsequent oxygen depletion from an oversupply of nutrients. In this paper, we report the formation of PAH-DNA adducts in fish contaminated with PAHs and exposed to NO ₂ ⁻ in the ambient water. Electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometric (ESI-MS/MS) analysis of the bile of the euryhaline fish Oreochromis mossambicus exposed simultaneously to field relevant sublethal concentrations of phenanthrene and NO ₂ ⁻ and collision-induced dissociation of selected ions revealed the presence of DNA-PAH adducts. The present study indicates that, although several high sensitivity techniques have been developed for the analysis of PAH derived DNA adducts, MS/MS has emerged as a powerful tool in the detection and structure elucidation of DNA adducts. Materials and methods Juvenile O. mossambicus from a local estuarine fish farm were used with increasing frequency for carcinogenicity testing and comparative cancer research. The fish were exposed to the alkylating agent phenanthrene in the presence of NO ₂ ⁻ . Composite untreated bile samples after dilution with methanol: water (1:1; v/v) were analyzed by ESI-MS. Results Several adducts could be evidenced in the bile by MS/MS. Deoxyadenosine/deoxyguanosine having a mass in the range of 450-650 amu is detected. In addition, a segment of modified dinucleotide with a mass that corresponds to a dimer consisting of a modified guanosine and a normal guanosine has also been identified in the bile. Discussion The formation of certain types of DNA adducts is a crucial step in the induction of cancer and a primary stage in mutagenesis. Phenanthrene injected by i.p. route led to the transformation of phenanthrene to N-formyl amino phenanthrene-N ⁶-deoxyadenosine adduct, whereas the fish co-exposed to phenanthrene and ambient nitrite metabolizes PAH to mono-, di- as well as trinitro derivatives, which then react with DNA leading to the formation of mainly modified guanosine and adenosine adducts. In the present investigation, dinitrophenanthrene diol epoxide (DNPDE) adduct with guanosine (m/z 587) seems to be the dominant adduct in the mixture, and its presence is shown first as a comparatively less stable adduct, which decomposes to give a more stable N² adduct (m/z 567). Conclusions MS/MS has proved to be useful in the rapid determination and discrimination of structurally different phenanthrene/derivatives DNA adducts in a complex mixture of fish bile co-exposed to phenanthrene and nitrite. However, the nature of metabolites formed is likely determined by the route of PAH administration, and there is a need to further define the early biochemical events of carcinogenesis in these species. Recommendations and perspectives DNA adduct analysis in fish bile offers a promising approach to study the risk of potentiation of anthropogenic chemicals into genotoxic compounds in the presence of nitrite in the marine environment. We believe this is the first report on the formation of DNA-phenanthrene adducts on co-exposure of the fish to PAH and nitrite.

Background, aim, and scope Riverine retention decreases loads of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in running water. It is an important process in nutrient cycling in watersheds. However, temporal riverine nutrient retention capacity varies due to changes in hydrological, ecological, and nutrient inputs into the watershed. Quantitative information of seasonal riverine N and P retention is critical for developing strategies to combat diffuse source pollution and eutrophication in riverine and coastal systems. This study examined seasonal variation of riverine total N (TN) and total P (TP) retention in the ChangLe River, an agricultural drainage river in east China. Methods Water quality, hydrological parameters, and hydrophyte coverage were monitored along the ChangLe River monthly during 2004-2006. Nutrient export loads (including chemical fertilizer, livestock, and domestic sources) entering the river from the catchment area were computed using an export coefficient model based on estimated nutrient sources. Riverine TN and TP retention loads (RNRL and RPRL) were estimated using mass balance calculations. Temporal variations in riverine nutrient retention were analyzed statistically. Results and discussion Estimated annual riverine retention loads ranged from 1,538 to 2,127 t year⁻¹ for RNRL and from 79.4 to 90.4 t year⁻¹ for RPRL. Monthly retention loads varied from 6.4 to 300.8 t month⁻¹ for RNRL and from 1.4 to 15.3 t month⁻¹ for RPRL. Both RNRL and RPRL increased with river flow, water temperature, hydrophyte coverage, monthly sunshine hours, and total TN and TP inputs. Dissolved oxygen concentration and the pH level of the river water decreased with RNRL and RPRL. Riverine nutrient retention ratios (retention as a percentage of total input) were only related to hydrophyte coverage and monthly sunshine hours. Monthly variations in RNRL and RPRL were functions of TN and TP loads. Conclusions Riverine nutrient retention capacity varied with environmental conditions. Annual RNRL and RPRL accounted for 30.3-48.3% and 52.5-71.2%, respectively, of total input TN and TP loads in the ChangLe River. Monthly riverine retention ratios were 3.5-88.7% for TN and 20.5-92.6% for TP. Hydrophyte growth and coverage on the river bed is the main cause for seasonal variation in riverine nutrient retention capacity. The total input TN and TP loads were the best indicators of RNRL and RPRL, respectively. Recommendations and perspectives High riverine nutrient retention capacity during summer due to hydrophytic growth is favorable to the avoidance of algal bloom in both river systems and coastal water in southeast China. Policies should be developed to strictly control nutrient applications on agricultural lands. Strategies for promoting hydrophyte growth in rivers are desirable for water quality management.

Purpose China's freshwater subtropical shallow lakes are increasingly eutrophic and susceptible to production of heavy growths or water blooms of cyanobacteria. One example was the heavy water bloom that occurred for the first time in Lake Xuanwu, in 2005, an urban lake located in Nanjing city. The aim of the present study was to determine dynamics of water bloom dominating Microcystis in this lake. Meanwhile, the relationship between environmental factors and Microcystis populations was also analyzed. Materials and methods Molecular detection, using quantitative polymerase chain reaction, was used in this lake to study the dynamics of the cyanobacterial community, its Microcystis populations, and the microcystin-producing Microcystis genotypes from August 2005 to November 2006. Results It was shown that Microcystis wesenbergii and Microcystis aeruginosa were the main components of the cyanobacterial blooms in Lake Xuanwu, and they coexisted with species of the filamentous cyanobacterial genera Anabaena, Planktothrix, and Anabaenopsis. Microcystis cells were detected during the entire survey period and in all sample sites. The cell abundance of Microcystis ranged from 3.6 × 10² cells ml⁻¹ to a peak of 3.8 × 10⁶ cells ml⁻¹. The ratio of mcyB-containing Microcystis subpopulations to the total Microcystis varied, ranging from 0.1% to 12.8%. The abundance of Microcystis containing the mcyB microcystin gene was shown to be significantly correlated with concentrations of total phosphorus and phosphate. Conclusions Water temperature was the primary factor affecting Microcystis abundance in the lake, and phosphorus loading was shown to be a main factor in governing the growth of both microcystin-producing genotype and total Microcystis population. Higher Microcystis cell counts at the bottom of the water column before and after appearance of water blooms in Lake Xuanwu suggested that Microcystis numbers in the water column, especially at the bottom of the water column, play an important role in forming the next water bloom.
