Rapid industrialization in China during the last three decades has resulted in widespread contamination of Cd in agricultural soils. A considerable proportion of the rice grain grown in some areas of southern China has Cd concentrations exceeding the Chinese food limit, raising widespread concern regarding food safety. In this review, we summarize rice grain Cd concentrations in national Chinese markets and in field surveys from contaminated areas, and analyze the potential health risk associated with increased dietary Cd intake. For subsistence rice farmers living in some contaminated areas of southern China who mainly consume locally-produced Cd-contaminated rice, their estimated dietary Cd intake is now comparable to that for the population in the region of Japan where the Itai-Itai disease was first reported. Interventions must be taken urgently to reduce Cd intake for these farmers. We also analyze i) the main reasons causing elevated grain Cd concentrations in southern China, ii) the dominant biogeochemical processes controlling the solubility of Cd in paddy soils, and iii) molecular mechanisms for the uptake and translocation of Cd in rice plants. Based on these analyses, we propose a number of countermeasures to address soil Cd contamination, including i) mitigation of Cd transfer from paddy soils to rice grain, and ii) intervention in those farmers who consume home-grown Cd-contaminated rice. Liming to increase soil pH to 6.5 and gene editing biotechnology are effective strategies to decrease Cd accumulation in rice grain. For these local farmers with high-Cd exposure risk, local governments should monitor the Cd concentration in their home-grown rice and exchange those high-Cd rice with low-Cd rice in order to reduce their dietary Cd intake.

By identifying the main sources of nitrate (NO3−) can obtain useful information to support the management of NO3− pollution, particularly in subtropical catchments with shallow drinking water wells. This study used water chemistry and dual stable isotopes δ15N and δ18O methods to assess seasonal and spatial variations of NO3− in precipitation, surface water, and groundwater in an agricultural and forest subtropical catchment in Jiangxi Province, China. The maximum concentrations of nitrate-nitrogen (NO3−-N) and ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) were 10.4 and 10.8 mg L−1in samples collected from 221 rainfall events from 2011 to 2013. About 4.4% and 12.3% NH4+-N concentrations of surface water and groundwater exceeded the thresholds of 1.0 and 0.2 mg L−1. The NO3−-N concentrations in surface water were closely correlated with NH4+-N concentrations in surface water and groundwater (r = −0.71 and r = −0.71, P < 0.05). The concentrations of NH4+-N and NO3−-N were significantly higher in a fishery pond and nearby drinking wells than in other monitoring points. Annual exports of NO3−-N and NH4+-N were 4.06 × 104 and 8.14 × 103 kg yr−1, respectively and NO3−-N is the main form of N loss. The δ15N values ranged from 0‰ to 20‰ in surface water and groundwater, and the δ18O values ranged from 0‰ to 15‰ and 1‰–13‰, respectively. Dual stable isotope natural abundance distribution and water chemistry [NO3−]/[Cl−] molar ratio information suggested that manure and sewage and soil N were the main sources of NO3− in surface water and manure and sewage in groundwater in summer and winter. In spring, water occurred denitrification and ammonium fertilizer, manure and sewage were the main sources of NO3− in surface water and groundwater which sampling points were closer residential area and fish ponds than paddy field and local farmers used more Manure. Manure applications should be reasonable around drinking water wells to protect the drinking water quality.

Nitrogen runoff from fertiliser intensive land uses has become an issue worldwide, contributing to algal blooms, hypoxic waters and aquatic biodiversity losses. This study assessed potential nutrient pollution from blueberry farms in subtropical Australia and examines whether nutrient loads were driven by groundwater discharge and/or surface water runoff. Streams downstream of eight blueberry farms were compared to eight nearby control sites without any blueberry activity. In the 90 day sample period, there were three rain events >90 mm day⁻¹ that produced runoff sufficient to create flooding. Overall, the results revealed a clear link between blueberry farming and nitrogen runoff in headwater streams. While NOX (nitrate + nitrite) was the dominant nitrogen species downstream of blueberry farms, dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) was the dominant species in control sites. The concentrations and loads of NOₓ were one order of magnitude lower in the eight non-blueberry (6.3 ± 2.0 μmol L⁻¹; 1.6 ± 1.2 kg N-NOX ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹) than the eight blueberry (56.9 ± 14.2 μmol L⁻¹; 21.8 ± 8.0 kg N-NOX ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹) sites. NOX concentrations and loads were highest following rain events. Radon (²²²Rn, a natural groundwater tracer) observations and low nitrogen concentration in groundwater samples further suggest that surface runoff dominates the delivery of nitrogen to the creeks investigated. NOX concentrations and loads in creeks correlated with blueberry farm density. At >15% of blueberry land use in a catchment, there was a detectable influence in NOX concentrations and loads in the headwater streams. Assuming that our load estimates can be up-scaled to annual nitrogen creek exports, and that local farmers use the recommended amount of fertiliser (121 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹), between 18 and 25% of the used fertiliser was lost to the creeks. This implies that there are opportunities for decreasing the use of fertilisers in this catchment and managing any nitrogen that escapes to the creeks.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions from the chimney of a prevailing domestic stove fuelled with raw bituminous coal were measured under flaming and smoldering combustion processes in a farmer's house. The results indicated that the concentrations of VOCs quickly increased after the coal loading and achieved their peak values in a few minutes. The peak concentrations of the VOCs under the smoldering combustion process were significantly higher than those under the flaming combustion process. Alkanes accounted for the largest proportion (43.05%) under the smoldering combustion, followed by aromatics (28.86%), alkenes (21.91%), carbonyls (5.81%) and acetylene (0.37%). The emission factors of the total VOCs under the smoldering combustion processes (5402.9 ± 2031.8 mg kg⁻¹) were nearly one order of magnitude greater than those under the flaming combustion processes (559.2 ± 385.9 mg kg⁻¹). Based on the VOCs emission factors obtained in this study and the regional domestic coal consumption, the total VOCs emissions from domestic coal stoves was roughly estimated to be 1.25 × 10⁸ kg a⁻¹ in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

The use, environmental fate and ecological risks of antibiotics applied in tilapia cage farming were investigated in the Tha Chin and Mun rivers in Thailand. Information on antibiotic use was collected through interviewing 29 farmers, and the concentrations of the most commonly used antibiotics, oxytetracycline (OTC) and enrofloxacin (ENR), were monitored in river water and sediment samples. Moreover, we assessed the toxicity of OTC and ENR on tropical freshwater invertebrates and performed a risk assessment for aquatic ecosystems. All interviewed tilapia farmers reported to routinely use antibiotics. Peak water concentrations for OTC and ENR were 49 and 1.6 μg/L, respectively. Antibiotics were most frequently detected in sediments with concentrations up to 6908 μg/kg d.w. for OTC, and 2339 μg/kg d.w. for ENR. The results of this study indicate insignificant short-term risks for primary producers and invertebrates, but suggest that the studied aquaculture farms constitute an important source of antibiotic pollution.

This review paper concentrates on carbon dioxide emissions, discussing its agricultural sources and the possibilities for minimizing emissions from these sources in wheat production in Canterbury, New Zealand. This study was conducted over 35,300 ha of irrigated and dryland wheat fields in Canterbury. Total CO₂ emissions were 1032 kg CO₂/ha in wheat production. Around 52% of the total CO₂ emissions were released from fertilizer use and around 20% were released from fuel used in wheat production. Nitrogen fertilizers were responsible for 48% (499 kg CO₂/ha) of CO₂ emissions. The link between nitrogen consumption, CO₂ emissions and crop production showed that reducing the CO₂ emissions would decrease crop production and net financial benefits to farmers.

Soils and agricultural products from the Red River basin in Northern Vietnam were reported to be contaminated by agrichemicals. To assess potential exposure of local farmers and consumers to these contaminants, pesticide use and management practices of local farmers were surveyed and residue concentrations were determined for recently used as well as for banned pesticides in water, soil, vegetables, and fish samples in two communes of Northern Vietnam. DDTs, HCHs, and Drin compounds still persist at relatively high concentrations in soil and occur in vegetable and fish samples. Recently used pesticides, such as fenobucarb, trichlorfon, cyfluthrin, and cypermethrin were detected in vegetable and fish samples. Thresholds for acceptable daily intake levels (ADI) were frequently reached in the analyzed food products pointing to the fact that current pesticide management practices do not only result in a pollution of the environment but also pose threats to human health.

The environment of a large-scale vegetable production area can be exposed to antibiotic residues and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) via animal manure and irrigation with contaminated water, which can facilitate the dissemination of ARB. However, the occurrence of ARB in plantation areas and their dissemination in this environment remain largely unexplored. In total, 382 samples including those from vegetable (n = 106), soil (n = 87), well water (n = 24), river water (n = 20), river sediments (n = 20), farmer feces (n = 58) and farmer hands (n = 67) were collected in 2019 from a large-scale cultivation area in Shandong, China. Selective agar plates were used to screen for carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) and whole-genome sequencing and Southern blotting were used to characterise isolates and mobile genetic elements carrying carbapenem resistance determinants. A total of nine NDM-5-producing isolates of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Citrobacter spp. were identified from environmental sources and human feces, all of which were multidrug-resistant. Single nucleotide polymorphism analysis suggested clonal transmission of carbapenem-resistant Citrobacter sedlakii within greenhouse soils in the area. Eight of the isolates carried closely related or identical IncX3 plasmids carrying blaNDM₋₅, which were shown to be conjugative via filter mating experiments, indicating the highly transmissible nature of this genetic element. Isolates of E. coli and Citrobacter freundii were detected in the feces of local farm workers and contained similar IncX3 plasmids with blaNDM₋₅ environmental isolates, suggesting a potential risk of CRE transfer from the work environment to the farm workers. Thus, further research is required to investigate the potential health risks associated with environmental exposure to CRE in vegetable cultivation areas.

Chloropicrin (CP) controls soil-borne plant diseases caused by pathogenic microbes, increases crop yield, but has a long-term inhibitory effect on beneficial soil microorganisms. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of biofumigation material fresh chicken manure (FCM) on soil microorganisms, and the duration of those effects in this experiment. Our results showed that in the laboratory, FCM significantly increased substrate-induced respiration (SIR) of soil microorganisms by 2.2–3.2 times at 80 d compared to the control, however, CP significantly inhibited the SIR of soil microorganisms. FCM and CP increased NH4+-N concentration within 40 days which then returned to the control level. FCM increased NO3--N by 2.82–5.78 times by 80 days, compared with the control, while the concentration of NO3--N in the CP treatment was not significantly different from the control at the 80 day. Although in the laboratory FCM inhibited the relative abundance of 16 S rRNA and the nitrogen cycle functional genes AOA amoA, AOB amoA, nirK and nosZ over a 40-day period, the taxonomic diversity of soil bacteria and fungi in the FCM treatment were restored to unfumigated level within 90 days in the field. However, CP treatment has a strong inhibitory effect on soil microorganisms after 90 days. Importantly, the relative abundance of some beneficial microorganisms that control soil-borne pathogenic microbes or degrade pollutants increased significantly in FCM, including Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Streptomyces bacterial genera and Chaetomium and Mycothermus fungal genera. Noteworthy, like CP, FCM still had a strong inhibitory effect on Fusarium at 90 d. Our results indicated that FCM not only increased the content of inorganic nitrogen and improved the respiration rate of soil microorganisms, but it also shortened the recovery time of beneficial soil microorganisms and increased taxonomic diversity. Our previous reports showed that FCM and CP treatments had the same effect in disease control and crop growth. Combined with the results of this experiment, we believe that FCM has the potential to replace CP, which would eliminate CP's detrimental environmental impact, improve farmer safety and promote sustainable crop production.
