Because most chickens are reared in intensive farms, where a range of feed additives are used routinely, concerns have been raised on the potential public health risk of chicken product consumption. This study was conducted to characterize the contents of trace metals in fresh chicken tissues (354 samples) on the food markets in Guangdong province of southern China, a major region of chicken production with heavy per capita chicken consumption, and to assess the public health risk from chronic dietary exposure to the trace metals through chicken consumption. With the exception of Cr, Ni, and Pb, the contents of trace metals were generally higher in the chicken giblets (livers, gizzards, hearts, and kidneys) compared to muscles (breasts and drumsticks). Chicken tissues from the urban markets generally contained higher levels of As, Cu, Mn, and Zn than those from the rural markets, while the contents of Pb were typically higher in the chicken muscles from the rural markets. Results of statistical analyses indicate that Cu, Zn, and As in the chicken tissues derived mainly from the feeds, which is consistent with the widespread use of Cu, Zn, and phenylarsenic compounds as feed supplements/additives in intensive poultry farming. No non-carcinogenic risk is found with the consumption of fresh chicken meat products on the food markets, while approximately 70% of the adult population in Guangzhou and 30% of those in Lianzhou have bladder and lung cancer risk above the serious or priority level (10⁻⁴), which arises from the inorganic arsenic contained in the chicken tissues. These findings indicate that the occurrence of inorganic arsenic at elevated levels in chicken tissues on the food markets in Guangdong province poses a significant public health risk, thus the use of phenylarsenic feed additives in China's poultry farming should be significantly reduced and eventually phased out.

The widespread adoption of genetically modified, glyphosate-tolerant corn and soybean varieties in US crop production has led to a dramatic increase in glyphosate usage. Though present at or below regulatory limits currently set for human foodstuffs, the concentration of glyphosate in companion animal feed is currently unknown. In the present study, 18 commercial companion animal feeds from eight manufacturers were analyzed for glyphosate residues using ELISA. Every product contained detectable glyphosate residues in the range of 7.83 × 10¹–2.14 × 10³ μg kg⁻¹ dry weight, with the average and medians being 3.57 × 10² and 1.98 × 10² μg kg⁻¹ respectively. Three products were tested for within-bag variation and six were tested for lot to lot variation. Little within-bag variation was found, but the concentration of glyphosate varied by lot in half of the products tested. Glyphosate concentration was significantly correlated with crude fiber content, but not crude fat or crude protein. Average daily intakes by animals consuming feeds containing the median glyphosate concentration are estimated to result in exposures that are 0.68–2.5% of the Allowable Daily Intake (ADI) for humans in the US and EU, which are 1750 and 500 μg kg⁻¹ respectively. Consumption of the most contaminated feed, however, would result in exposure to 7.3% and 25% of the above ADIs, though the relevance of such an exposure to companion animals is currently unknown.Companion animal feeds contained 7.83 × 10¹–2.14 × 10³ μg kg⁻¹ glyphosate which is likely to result in pet exposure that is 4–12 times higher than that of humans on a per Kg basis.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their hydroxylated (OH) and methoxylated (MeO) structural analogues have been found widely distributed in aquatic ecosystems, and may exhibit potential adverse effects to humans due to their bioaccumulative behavior through food chain. Fishmeal is an important animal feed applied around the world and is generally of marine origin. However, the levels and sources of PBDEs in fishmeal have not been thoroughly evaluated and their structural analogues have not been reported to date. The present study collected ninety-two fishmeal samples from world main fishmeal producing area to determine 27 PBDEs, 10 MeO-PBDEs and 11 OH-PBDEs. The concentrations of Σ₂₇PBDEs, Σ₁₀MeO-PBDEs and Σ₁₁OH-PBDEs were in the ranges of 0.1–1498 (mean: 75.8), 1.14–881 (37.4) and 1.00–47.5 (8.17) ng/g lipid, respectively. PBDEs were found primarily correlated with the historically commercial production, meaning higher production of certain commercial product in a country, higher corresponding PBDE congeners in local fishmeal. A market shift from penta- and octa-formulations toward deca-formulation was observed. BDE209 was identified as a major congener in fishmeal. Both the MeO-PBDEs and the OH-PBDEs were influenced by fishmeal producing areas (p < 0.001). High MeO-PBDEs were identified in the Southeast Asian fishmeal, which might be due to the suitable environmental conditions for the generation of bromoperoxidase-contained algae in local area. The ratio of two major MeO-PBDE congeners, 6-MeO-BDE47/2′-MeO-BDE68, were generally >1 in the northern hemisphere and <1 in the southern hemisphere in the present study, which was consistent with the results obtained from previous published papers. Both MeO-PBDEs and OH-PBDEs were in accordance with the specialties of naturally produced halogenated compounds.

Biochar is carbonaceous mass that is produced from pyrolysis or gasification of biomass. It is so far majorly explored for soil remediation application, but recently it has attracted a lot of interest because of its unexplored applications in the area of adsorption. In this work, detailed study on biochars produced from two different feeds (rice husk and saw dust), at two different temperatures (450 and 550°C) and two different rates (fast and slow) of pyrolysis are discussed for oil spill mitigation. Biochar is characterized in detail by various techniques such as FTIR, 13C CPMAS, FESEM, RAMAN, TGA to determine the structural composition and observe the extent of pyrolysis. Tests to assess the performance of produced biochars as sorbents for oil spill mitigation have been demonstrated. The as produced biochars selectively absorbed crude oil from oil/water biphasic mixtures in various capacities.

The concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs) were determined by ICP-MS in feed for farm animals in three regions of Northwestern Italy. This is the first study aimed at defining the levels and patterns of REEs in feed for different animal species. REEs are in fact emerging as contaminants worldwide, following their applications in industry, technology, medicine, and agriculture. Moreover, in 2016, the first REE-based feed additive—a zootechnical additive for weaned piglets—was authorized in the EU. Therefore, information about the natural content of REEs in animal feed of vegetal origin is required to evaluate the potential use of REEs as a growth promoter. There was a high variability in the REEs content of the animal feed in three different Italian regions, and REEs content varied according to the different animal species for which the feed was intended. Concentrations of light REE (LREE) were higher than those of heavy REE (HREE) in each feed typology. Raw materials were shown to have higher ΣREE concentrations (mean concentration 2.4 mg kg⁻¹) than complete or complementary feed. Considering the animal species, mean ΣREE concentrations were as follows: horse feed (2.7 mg kg⁻¹) > poultry feed > bovine feed > swine feed (0.61 mg kg⁻¹). REE levels in feed were in line with values available in the literature on vegetables; thus, REE concentrations in feed do not constitute a concern for animal health.

Intercropping of arsenic (As) hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata and cash crop Morus alba could improve the As concentration in the hyperaccumulator but decrease As concentration in the intercropped crop. The effects of several amendments on the transfer of As were investigated to determine an enhancement strategy for the intercropping system of P. vittata and M. alba. Phosphorus, in the form of Ca(H₂PO₄)₂, promoted the release of As to the soil solution and apparently increased the As removal from the soil by 42% compared with the untreated variant. The addition of FeSO₄ and CaCO₃ decreased As concentration in the soil solution and the uptake of As by both plant species. The As levels in the mulberry leaves remained under the threshold limits of feedstuffs in China. Intercropping was confirmed as an applicable strategy to manage contaminated soil. Hence, under the condition that all treatments produced safe mulberry leaves, Ca(H₂PO₄)₂ was the appropriate amendment to achieve the highest As removal rate, whereas FeSO₄ could lower the risk of As to further migrate to another medium.

Biosolid, i.e., dehydrated sludge from effluent treatment stations, has been progressively used as an agricultural fertilizer due to its high organic matter and nutrient contents. Elephant grass (Cenchrus purpureus (Schumach.) Morrone) presents easy adaptation and high yields, being used for animal feeding and for energy purposes. The objective of this work was to analyze the production and bromatological parameters of elephant grass with four different doses of biosolid, one of chemical fertilizer and a control plot, with two replicates each. A field experiment was carried out using a randomized block design with three blocks, totaling 18 plots, which received biosolid fertilization at 1×, 2×, 4×, and 8× the levels recommended by the Brazilian National Environment Council, along with conventional chemical fertilization and no fertilization, all under similar drip irrigation. Tukey’s test indicated a significant difference at p < 0.01 for total production in the first cut and acid detergent fiber in the second cut. At p < 0.05, significant differences were detected for total nitrogen and total protein in the first cut. The elephant grass yield under “1× biosolid” was similar to that reached with chemical fertilization. Physical and bromatological characteristics indicated potential use as animal feed and energy source. For doses higher than specified by Brazilian standards (2×, 4×, and 8×), further studies are required to verify possible contamination from heavy metals, pathogenic microorganisms, and n.

Quail meat is an emerging source of high-quality animal protein. Quails are exposed to a wide range of xenobiotics such as heavy metals. In this study, residual concentrations of four toxic metals, of significant public health importance, including cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), and nickel (Ni), were determined in edible tissues of quails. In addition, metal loads were measured in water, feed, and litter samples collected from same quail farms as possible sources for quail exposure to heavy metals. The possible use of metallothionein (MT) and heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) as molecular biomarkers of exposure to heavy metals was further investigated. Furthermore, the dietary intake and the potential risk assessment of the examined heavy metals among children and adults were calculated. The edible tissues of quails contained high concentrations of four heavy metals (contents (ppm/ww) ranging from 0.02 to 0.32 in Cd, 0.05 to 1.96 in Pb, 0.002 to 0.32 in As, and 1.17 to 3.94 in Ni), which corresponded to the high contents of these metals in the feeds, water, and litter. MT and Hsp70 mRNA expressions showed positive correlations with the concentrations of heavy metals in tissues indicating the possibility to use these proteins as biomarkers for quail’s exposure to toxic metals. Dietary intake of quail meat and risk assessment revealed potential risks especially for children after prolonged exposure to the examined metals. Thus, legislations should be established and continuous screening of metal residues should be adopted in order to reduce the toxic metal concentrations in feeds and drinking water for quails. Reduction of exposure to heavy metals subsequently would lead to minimization of exposure of such toxicants through consumption of quail meat.

Phoxim is an organic phosphorus pesticide that remains easily in the environment, such as human food and animal feed. The objective of this study was to explore the effect of vitamin E on phoxim-induced oxidative stress in the intestinal tissues of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Forty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to a control group and three treatment groups: treatment group 1 (phoxim: 20 mg/kg·BW), treatment group 2 (phoxim: 180 mg/kg·BW), and treatment 3 (vitamin E + phoxim: 200 mg/kg·BW + 180 mg/kg·BW). Phoxim was given by gavage administration once a day for 28 days. The results showed that phoxim significantly reduced jejunum villus height in rats (P < 0.05), and decreased the mRNA expression of junction protein genes of rats, including Occlidin and Claudin-4 (P < 0.05). Phoxim reduced GSH content and T-AOC level in the intestinal mucosa (P < 0.05). The mRNA expression levels of oxidative stress-related genes (Nrf2 and GPx2) were decreased. The mRNA expression of SOD was significantly increased. In addition, phoxim increased the level of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in jejunum mucosa and significantly reduced the level of IL-8 in ileum mucosas, while significantly increased TNF-α secretion. The mRNA expression levels of IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 were significantly decreased, and mRNA expression of TNF-α was significantly increased (P < 0.05). Phoxim also increased the DNA expression of total cecal bacteria and Escherichia coli, inhibited the DNA expression of Lactobacillus and destroyed the intestinal barrier. Two hundred milligrams per kilogram BW vitamin E reduced the effect of phoxim on intestinal structure, alleviated the oxidative stress in intestinal tissue, and decreased the level of TNF-α. The mRNA expressions of antioxidative stress genes (SOD and GPx2) were significantly increased. The DNA expression level of Lactobacillus was significantly increased. In conclusion, vitamin E helped reduce the toxicity of organophosphate pesticides, such as phoxim on rat intestinal tissue.

Some of pathogenic bacteria and fungi have the ability to produce fetal toxins which may be the direct causes of cytotoxicity or cellular dysfunction in the colonization site. Biological and non-biological environmental factors, challenge and microbes influence the effect of toxins on these pathogens. Modern research mentions that many natural materials can reduce the production of toxins in pathogenic microbes. However, researches that explain the mechanical theories of their effects are meager. This review aimed to discuss the ameliorative potential role of plant-derived compounds and probiotics to reduce the toxin production of food-borne microbes either in poultry bodies or poultry feedstuff. Moreover, studies that highlight their own toxicological mechanisms have been discussed. Adding natural additives to feed has a clear positive effect on the enzymatic and microbiological appearance of the small intestine without any adverse effect on the liver. Studies in this respect were proposed to clarify the effects of these natural additives for feed. In conclusion, it could be suggested that the incorporation of probiotics, herbal extracts, and herbs in the poultry diets has some beneficial effects on productive performance, without a positive impact on economic efficiency. In addition, the use of these natural additives in feed has a useful impact on the microbiological appearance of the small intestine and do not have any adverse impacts on intestinal absorption or liver activity as evidenced by histological examination.
