Exposure of the general population to airborne metals remains poorly estimated despite the potential health risks. Passive moss biomonitoring can proxy air quality at fine resolution over large areas, mainly in rural areas. We adapted the technique to urban areas to develop fine concentration maps for several metals for Constances cohort's participants. We sampled Grimmia pulvinata in 77 and 51 cemeteries within ∼50 km of Paris and Lyon city centers, respectively. We developed land-use regression models for 14 metals including cadmium, lead, and antimony; potential predictors included the amount of urban, agricultural, forest, and water around cemeteries, population density, altitude, and distance to major roads. We used both kriging with external drift and land use regression followed by residual kriging when necessary to derive concentration maps (500 × 500 m) for each metal and region. Both approaches led to similar results. The most frequent predictors were the amount of urban, agricultural, or forest areas. Depending on the metal, the models explained part of the spatial variability, from 6% for vanadium in Lyon to 84% for antimony in Paris, but mostly between 20% and 60%, with better results for metals emitted by human activities. Moss biomonitoring in cemeteries proves efficient for obtaining airborne metal exposures in urban areas for the most common metals.

Lipids are important biogenic markers to indicate the sources and chemical process of aerosol particles in the atmosphere. To better understand the influences of biogenic and anthropogenic sources on forest aerosols, total suspended particles (TSP) were collected at Mt. Changbai, Shennongjia, and Xishuangbanna that are located at different climatic zones in northeastern, central and southwestern China. n-Alkanes, fatty acids and n-alcohols were detected in the forest aerosols based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The total concentrations of aliphatic compounds ranged from 15.3 ng m⁻³ to 566 ng m⁻³, and fatty acids were the most abundant (44–95%) followed by n-alkanes and n-alcohols. Low molecular weight- (LFAs) and unsaturated fatty acids (UnFAs) showed diurnal variation with higher concentrations during the nighttime in summer, indicating the potential impact from microbial activities on forest aerosols. The differences of oleic acid (C₁₈:₁) and linoleic acid (C₁₈:₂) concentrations between daytime and nighttime increased at lower latitude, indicating more intense photochemical degradation occurred at lower latitude regions. High levels of n-alkanes during daytime in summer with higher values of carbon preference indexes, combining the strong odd carbon number predominance with a maximum at C₂₇ or C₂₉, implied the high contributions of biogenic sources, e.g., higher plant waxes. In contrast, higher concentrations of low molecular weight n-alkanes were detected in winter forest aerosols. Levoglucosan showed a positive correlation (R² > 0.57) with high- and low molecular weight aliphatic compounds in Mt. Changbai, but such a correlation was not observed in Shennongjia and Xishuangbanna. These results suggest the significant influence of biomass burning in Mt. Changbai, and fossil fuel combustion might be another important anthropogenic source of forest aerosols. This study adds useful information to the current understanding of forest organic aerosols at different geographical locations in China.

Groundwater nitrate (NO₃⁻) pollution is a worldwide environmental problem. Therefore, identification and partitioning of its potential sources are of great importance for effective control of groundwater quality. The current study was carried out to identify the potential sources of groundwater NO₃⁻ pollution and determine their apportionment in different land use/land cover (LULC) types in a traditional agricultural area, Weining Plain, in Northwest China. Multiple hydrochemical indices, as well as dual NO₃⁻ isotopes (δ¹⁵N–NO₃ and δ¹⁸O–NO₃), were used to investigate the groundwater quality and its influencing factors. LULC patterns of the study area were first determined by interpreting remote sensing image data collected from the Sentinel-2 satellite, then the Bayesian stable isotope mixing model (MixSIAR) was used to estimate proportional contributions of the potential sources to groundwater NO₃⁻ concentrations. Groundwater quality in the study area was influenced by both natural and anthropogenic factors, with anthropological impact being more important. The results of LULC revealed that the irrigated land is the dominant LULC type in the plain, covering an area of 576.6 km² (57.18% of the total surface study area of the plain). On the other hand, the results of the NO₃⁻ isotopes suggested that manure and sewage (M&S), as well as soil nitrogen (SN), were the major contributors to groundwater NO₃⁻. Moreover, the results obtained from the MixSIAR model showed that the mean proportional contributions of M&S to groundwater NO₃⁻ were 55.5, 43.4, 21.4, and 78.7% in the forest, irrigated, paddy, and urban lands, respectively. While SN showed mean proportional contributions of 29.9, 43.4, 61.5, and 12.7% in the forest, irrigated, paddy, and urban lands, respectively. The current study provides valuable information for local authorities to support sustainable groundwater management in the study region.

The area of agricultural wastes valorisation to fertilizers is attracting growing attention because of the increasing fertilizer prices of fertilizers and the higher costs of waste utilization. Despite the scientific and political interest in the concept of circular economy, few studies have considered the practical approach towards the implementation of elaborated technologies. This article outlines innovative strategies for the valorisation of different biobased wastes into fertilizers. The present work makes a significant contribution to the field of new ideas for waste biomass management to recover significant fertilizer nutrients. These results emphasize the importance of the biomass use as a base of renewable resources, which has recently gained special importance, especially in relation to the outbreak of pandemia and war. Broken supply chains and limited access to deposits of raw materials used in fertilizer production (natural gas, potassium salts) meant that now, as never before, it has become more important and feasible to implement the idea of a circular economy and a green deal. We have obtained satisfactory results that demonstrate that appropriate management of biological waste (originating from agriculture, food processing, aquaculture, forest, pharmaceutical industry, and other branches of industry, sewage sludge) will not only reduce environmental nuisance (reducing waste heaps), but will also allow recovery of valuable materials, such as nitrogen (especially valuable amino acids), phosphorus, potassium, microelements, and biologically active substances with properties that stimulate plant growth. The results reported here provide information on production of biobased plant protection products (bioagrochemicals) from agri-food waste. This work reports an overview of biopesticides and biofertilisers production technologies and summarizes their properties and the mechanisms of action.

The impact of land use type on the content of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the soils of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) and the associated ecological and human health risks has drawn great attention. Consequently, in this study, top- and subsurface soil samples were collected from areas with four different land uses (i.e., cropland, forest, grassland, and developed area) and the total contents of Cr, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn were determined. Geostatistical analysis, self-organizing map (SOM), and positive matrix factorization (PMF), ecological risk assessment (ERA) and human health risk assessment (HRA) were applied and used to classify and identify the contamination sources and assess the potential risk. Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) was applied to clarify the relationship of land use with PTE contents and risk. The PTE contents in all topsoil samples surpassed the respective background concentrations of China and corresponding subsurface concentrations. However, the ecological risk of all soil samples remained at a moderate or considerable level across the four land use types. Developed area and cropland showed a higher ecological risk than the other two land use types. Industrial discharges (32.8%), agricultural inputs (22.6%), natural sources (23.7%), and traffic emissions (20.9%) were the primary PTE sources in the tested soils, which indicate that anthropogenic activities have significantly affected soil PTE contents to a greater extent than other sources. Industrial discharge was the most prominent source of non-carcinogenic health risk, contributing 37.7% for adults and 35.2% for children of the total risk. The results of PLS-PM revealed that land use change associated with intensive human activities such as industrial activities and agricultural practices distinctly affected the PTE contents in soils of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

The quality and quantity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) greatly controls the fate of heavy metals. The characteristics of DOM and its interaction with metals are essential for the metal ecological risk assessment of soils. In this study, the DOM spectral characteristics of representative forest soils and the complex capacities between fluorescent DOM components and cadmium (Cd) were analyzed. Functional groups, such as carboxylic acids, alcohols and phenols, were determined by FT-IR analysis. Chromophoric DOM, fluorescent DOM and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations exhibited strong correlations with each other, indicating that variations of DOC could be well explained by Chromophoric DOM or fluorescent DOM due to high correlation coefficients. The spectral slope ratio was in the range of 0.85–5.90, implying an abundance of heavy macromolecular humic acids, peptides, and polycondensates. The absorbance spectral at 254 nm (SUVA₂₅₄) strongly correlated with SUVA₂₆₀ (r = 0.992, P < 0.01), indicating that hydrophobicity closely related with aromatic structure, and aromatic groups could be broadly hydrophobic. Fluorescence indices were from 1.62 to 2.21 and biological index values ranged from 0.54 to 1.14, where the DOM was mainly sourced from mixed terrestrial and autogenous inputs in most sites. Four universal fluorescence components were identified and characterized by fluorescence EEM-PARAFAC, including two humic-like (components 1 and 2), one tyrosine-like (components 3) and one fulvic-like (components 4) component. Both components 3 and 4 showed fluorescence quenching with increasing Cd concentrations, while components 1 and 2 had no evident change in fluorescence intensity. The logK₃ and logK₄ values ranged from 4.41 to 5.29 and 4.71 to 5.54, respectively, with most logK values of component 3 for Cd binding being smaller than that of component 4, thus, indicating that the fulvic acid substances exhibited stronger and more stable interactions with Cd than protein-like components.

Various precursor emissions and chemical mechanisms for secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation were incorporated into a regional air quality model system (RAQMS) and applied to investigate the distribution, composition, and source contribution of SOA over east China in summer 2018. Model comparison against a variety of observations at a national scale demonstrated that the model was able to reasonably reproduce meteorological variables, O₃ and PM₂.₅ concentrations, and the model simulated SOA concentration generally agreed with observations, with the overall NMB of 7.0% and R of 0.4 in 10 cities over east China. The simulated period-mean SOA concentrations of 4–15 μg m⁻³ were mainly distributed over the North China Plain (NCP), the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and Chongqing district. SOA dominated organic aerosol (OA) over China in summertime (90%). The percentage contributions to SOA from ASOA (SOA produced from anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (AVOC)), BSOA (SOA produced from biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC)), DSOA (SOA produced from aqueous uptake of glyoxal and methylglyoxal) and S/I-SOA (SOA produced from semi-volatile and intermediate volatile organic compounds) were estimated to be 48.3%, 28.6%, 14.3%, and 8.8% respectively, over east China in summertime. In terms of domain and period average, ASOA contributed most to SOA (59%) in north China, while BSOA contributed most to SOA (37.3%) in northeast China. The percentage contribution of DSOA to SOA reached 21.5% in southwest China. S/I-SOA accounted for approximately 10% of SOA in most areas of east China. This study reveals that while AVOC dominates SOA formation on average over east China, the SOA source contributions differ considerably in different regions of China. BVOC makes the same contribution to SOA formation as AVOC in northeast China and southwest China, where forest coverage and BVOC emission are higher and anthropogenic emissions are relatively low, highlighting the significant role of BVOC in summer SOA formation in China.

With increased forest fires due to climate change, PM₂.₅ emissions also intensified. Record PM₂.₅ emissions according to Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service in Russia amounted to 8 megatons (Mt) in 2021, which is 78% higher than the average level of 2004–2021 (4.5 Mt). Seven federal subjects (the constituent entities) with vast forest areas without fire protection produced 86% of emissions (6.8 Mt) in 2021, the major losses (6.1 Mt) in Yakutia (Sakha Republic). The ambient temperature in Eastern Siberia is increasing, especially in months of winter and spring seasons (up to +3.6 °C) in 1990–2020 compared to 1901–2020 (CEDA Archive); climate change has affected meteorological conditions leading to increased forest fires. The results of the SARIMAX model study for PM₂.₅ emissions considering meteorological factors using ERA5 and burnt forest area using MODIS (MCD64A1), establishing a significant dependence of PM₂.₅ emissions on the lack of precipitation and the associated parameters of complete and potential evaporation. This influence long before the fire season (up to 9 months), as it affects the snow cover and the dryness of the fuel by the beginning of forest fires. In turn, high PM₂.₅ emission values are accompanied by a drop in 2 m air temperature and surface solar radiation downwards due to the aerosol saturation with suspended particles. The average COR for seven federal subjects was 0.79, with the highest forecast result in Yakutia (0.95), indicating the maximum propensity for record emissions due to weather conditions. In combination with forest management without fire protection, meteorological parameters have caused an increase in PM₂.₅ emissions in recent years in Siberia. The forest needs other ways to manage under the pressures of climate change to reduce environmental pollution associated with PM₂.₅ emissions from vast Siberian fires.

PM₂.₅ (fine particulate matter with aerodynamics diameter <2.5 μm) is the most important component of air pollutants, and has a significant impact on the atmospheric environment and human health. Using satellite remote sensing aerosol optical depth (AOD) to explore the hourly ground PM₂.₅ distribution is very helpful for PM₂.₅ pollution control. In this study, Himawari-8 AOD, meteorological factors, geographic information, and a new deep forest model were used to construct an AOD-PM₂.₅ estimation model in China. Hourly cross-validation results indicated that estimated PM₂.₅ values were consistent with the site observation values, with an R² range of 0.82–0.91 and root mean square error (RMSE) of 8.79–14.72 μg/m³, among which the model performance reached the optimum value between 13:00 and 15:00 Beijing time (R² > 0.9). Analysis of the correlation coefficient between important features and PM₂.₅ showed that the model performance was related to AOD and affected by meteorological factors, particularly the boundary layer height. Deep forest can detect diurnal variations in pollutant concentrations, which were higher in the morning, peaked at 10:00–11:00, and then began to decline. High-resolution PM₂.₅ concentrations derived from the deep forest model revealed that some cities in China are seriously polluted, such as Xi ‘an, Wuhan, and Chengdu. Our model can also capture the direction of PM₂.₅, which conforms to the wind field. The results indicated that due to the combined effect of wind and mountains, some areas in China experience PM₂.₅ pollution accumulation during spring and winter. We need to be vigilant because these areas with high PM₂.₅ concentrations typically occur near cities.

Forest fires can threaten amphibians because ash-associated contaminants transported by post-fire runoff impact both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Still, the effects of these contaminants on the skin microbiome of amphibians have been overlooked. Thus, the main objective of this study was to assess the effects of ash from different severity wildfires (moderate and high) on the skin microbiome of the Iberian frog (Rana iberica). Bacterial isolates sampled from R. iberica skin microbiome were tested for their antimicrobial activity against the pathogen Aeromonas salmonicida. The isolates with antimicrobial activity were identified and further exposed to several concentrations (0, 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, 75, and 100%) of Eucalypt (Eucalyptus globulus) aqueous extracts (AAEs) of ash from both a moderate and a high severity wildfire. The results showed that 53% of the bacterial isolates presented antimicrobial activity, with Pseudomonas being the most common genus. Exposure to AAEs had diverse effects on bacterial growth since a decrease, an increase or no effects on growth were observed. For both ash types, increasing AAEs concentrations led to an increase in the number of bacteria whose growth was negatively affected. Ash from the high severity fire showed more adverse effects on bacterial growth than those from moderate severity, likely due to the higher metal concentrations of the former. This study revealed that bacteria living in Iberian frogs' skin could be impaired by ash-related contaminants, potentially weakening the individual's immune system. Given the foreseen increase in wildfires' frequency and severity under climate change, this work raises awareness of the risks faced by amphibian communities in fire-prone regions, emphasising the importance of a rapid implementation of post-fire emergency measures for the preservation and conservation of this group of animals.
