Source apportionment study of aerosols over Bay of Bengal (BOB) were investigated during Integrated Campaign on Aerosol Radiation Budget (ICARB) in the pre–monsoon (March–April 2006) and winter (December–January 2008–09) seasons. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was applied to identify sources of ambient particulate matter using daily chemical composition data collected in the pre–monsoon (total suspended particles, TSP) and winter season (particles with a diameter < 10μm, PM10). Sea salt (SS), secondary aerosol (SA), Si–dust, fossil fuel combustion (FFC), biomass burning (BB) sources have been identified in both seasons, however their relative contributions were different. The combined contribution of Si–dust, secondary aerosol and fossil fuel combustion, constitute ~67% of particulate matter in pre–monsoon, whereas, secondary aerosols and biomass burning were the major contributors (63.2%) to particulate matter in winter. The identified sources effectively predict the measured particulate concentration in the pre–monsoon (r2=0.74) and winter season (r2=0.82). Another receptor model, principal component analysis (PCA) was done to increase the plausibility of the results obtained by PMF. PCA resulted in the identification of the sources that were comparable to the PMF outputs. PCA of TSP in the pre–monsoon season resulted in the extraction of three components (crustal dust + secondary aerosol, biomass burning, fossil fuel combustion + industrial emissions) that explained the 83% of the variance in the data. Similarly, in winter season, PCA resulted in the extraction of four components (biomass burning + secondary aerosol, industrial emission, crustal dust, sea salt) that explained the 86% of the variance of the data.

Increasingly stringent environmental legislation on sulphur oxide emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels onboard ships (International Maritime Organization (IMO) Regulation 14) can be met by either refining the fuel to reduce sulphur content or by scrubbing the exhaust gases. Commonly used open loop marine scrubbers discharge warm acidic exhaust gas wash water into the sea, depressing its pH. The focus on this paper is on the physics and chemistry behind the disposal of acidic discharges in seawater.The IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 59/24/Add.1 Annex 9) requires the wash water to reach a pH greater than 6.5 at a distance of 4m from the point of discharge. We examine the engineering constraints, specifically size and number of ports, to identify the challenges of meeting regulatory compliance.

This study was conducted to determine the composition of surfactants in the sea-surface microlayer (SML) and atmospheric aerosol around the southern region of the Peninsular Malaysia. Surfactants in samples taken from the SML and atmospheric aerosol were determined using a colorimetric method, as either methylene blue active substances (MBAS) or disulphine blue active substances (DBAS). Principal component analysis with multiple linear regressions (PCA–MLR), using the anion and major element composition of the aerosol samples, was used to determine possible sources of surfactants in atmospheric aerosol. The results showed that the concentrations of surfactants in the SML and atmospheric aerosol were dominated by anionic surfactants and that surfactants in aerosol were not directly correlated (p>0.05) with surfactants in the SML. Further PCA–MLR from anion and major element concentrations showed that combustion of fossil fuel and sea spray were the major contributors to surfactants in aerosol in the study area.

Anthropogenic CO₂ emission is identified as the major cause of climate change. The use of fossil fuels has to be accommodated, possibly with a CO₂ capture process. Sequestration of captured CO₂ at high pressure is proposed as a feasible option for future mitigation of climate change, though using fossil fuels. However, this needs significant energy input and carries the potential threat of a possible future catastrophe. Capture of CO₂ with possible recycling is a long-term sustainable option. In this paper, a process involving a chain of reactions using solid sodium to capture both CO₂ and SO₂ from a flue gas is described. A significantly detailed description of both chemical reactions and physical processes is discussed. Recycling of captured CO₂ and SO₂ in the form of solid graphite and elemental sulphur (as the by-products) is the special feature of this process. However, critical selection of intermediate process liquids and equipment in this process needs further study for real-life implementation of this scheme.

The objective of the study is to examine the relationship between air pollution, fossil fuel energy consumption, water resources, and natural resource rents in the panel of selected Asia-Pacific countries, over a period of 1975–2012. The study includes number of variables in the model for robust analysis. The results of cross-sectional analysis show that there is a significant relationship between air pollution, energy consumption, and water productivity in the individual countries of Asia-Pacific. However, the results of each country vary according to the time invariant shocks. For this purpose, the study employed the panel least square technique which includes the panel least square regression, panel fixed effect regression, and panel two-stage least square regression. In general, all the panel tests indicate that there is a significant and positive relationship between air pollution, energy consumption, and water resources in the region. The fossil fuel energy consumption has a major dominating impact on the changes in the air pollution in the region.

The vertical concentration profiles and source contributions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and n-alkanes in respirable particle samples (PM₄) collected at 10, 100, 200 and 300-m altitude from the Milad Tower of Tehran, Iran during fall and winter were investigated. The average concentrations of total PAHs and total n-alkanes were 16.7 and 591 ng/m³, respectively. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was applied to the chemical composition and wind data to apportion the contributing sources. The five PAH source factors identified were: ‘diesel’ (56.3 % of total PAHs on average), ‘gasoline’ (15.5 %), ‘wood combustion, and incineration’ (13 %), ‘industry’ (9.2 %), and ‘road soil particle’ (6.0 %). The four n-alkane source factors identified were: ‘petrogenic’ (65 % of total n-alkanes on average), ‘mixture of petrogenic and biomass burning’ (15 %), ‘mixture of biogenic and fossil fuel’ (11.5 %), and ‘biogenic’ (8.5 %). Source contributions by wind sector were also estimated based on the wind sector factor loadings from PMF analysis. Directional dependence of sources was investigated using the conditional probability function (CPF) and directional relative strength (DRS) methods. The calm wind period was found to contribute to 4.4 % of total PAHs and 5.0 % of total n-alkanes on average. Highest average concentrations of PAHs and n-alkanes were found in the 10 and 100 m samples, reflecting the importance of contributions from local sources. Higher average concentrations in the 300 m samples compared to those in the 200 m samples may indicate contributions from long-range transport. The vertical profiles of source factors indicate the gasoline and road soil particle-associated PAHs, and the mixture from biogenic and fossil fuel source-associated n-alkanes were mostly from local emissions. The smaller average contribution of diesel-associated PAHs in the lower altitude samples also indicates that the restriction of diesel-fueled vehicle use in the central area of Tehran has been effective in reducing the PAHs concentration.

Substantial greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from hydropower reservoirs have been of great concerns recently, yet the significant carbon emitters of drawdown area and reservoir downstream (including spillways and turbines as well as river reaches below dams) have not been included in global carbon budget. Here, we revisit GHG emission from hydropower reservoirs by considering reservoir surface area, drawdown zone and reservoir downstream. Our estimates demonstrate around 301.3 Tg carbon dioxide (CO₂)/year and 18.7 Tg methane (CH₄)/year from global hydroelectric reservoirs, which are much higher than recent observations. The sum of drawdown and downstream emission, which is generally overlooked, represents 42 % CO₂and 67 % CH₄of the total emissions from hydropower reservoirs. Accordingly, the global average emissions from hydropower are estimated to be 92 g CO₂/kWh and 5.7 g CH₄/kWh. Nonetheless, global hydroelectricity could currently reduce approximate 2,351 Tg CO₂eq/year with respect to fuel fossil plant alternative. The new findings show a substantial revision of carbon emission from the global hydropower reservoirs.
