This study presents the results of lead (Pb) concentrations from both highway runoff and contaminated soil along 32 and 23 highway sites, respectively. In general, the Pb concentration on topsoil (0–15 cm) along highways was much higher than the Pb concentration in subsurface soil (15–60 cm). The Pb deposited on soil appears to be anthropogenic and a strong correlation was found between the Pb concentration in surface soil and highway runoff in urban areas. The concentration of Pb measured during 1980s from highways runoff throughout the world was up to 11 times higher than the measured values in mid 1990s and 2000s. The current Pb deposited on soil near highways appears to be a mixture of paint, tire weight balance and old leaded gasoline combustion. Overall, the Pb phase-out regulation reduced the Pb deposits in the environment and consequently lowered Pb loading into receiving waters.

In this study on-road gaseous emissions of vehicles are investigated using remote sensing measurements collected over three different periods. The results show that a high percentage of gaseous pollutants were emitted from a small percentage of vehicles. Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) vehicles generally have higher gaseous emissions compared to other vehicles, particularly among higher-emitting vehicles. Vehicles with high vehicle specific power (VSP) tend to have lower CO and HC emissions while petrol and LPG vehicles tend to have higher NO emissions when engine load is high. It can be observed that gaseous emission factors of petrol and LPG vehicles increase greatly within 2 years of being introduced to the vehicle fleet, suggesting that engine and catalyst performance deteriorate rapidly. It can be observed that LPG vehicles have higher levels of gaseous emissions than petrol vehicles, suggesting that proper maintenance of LPG vehicles is essential in reducing gaseous emissions from vehicles.

In the study, we establish centennial records of anthropogenic lead pollution at different locations in the North Atlantic (Iceland, USA, and Europe) by means of lead deposited in shells of the long-lived bivalve Arctica islandica. Due to local oceanographic and geological conditions we conclude that the lead concentrations in the Icelandic shell reflect natural influxes of lead into Icelandic waters. In comparison, the lead profile of the US shell is clearly driven by anthropogenic lead emissions transported from the continent to the ocean by westerly surface winds. Lead concentrations in the European North Sea shell, in contrast, are dominantly driven by local lead sources resulting in a much less conspicuous 1970s gasoline lead peak. In conclusion, the lead profiles of the three shells are driven by different influxes of lead, and yet, all support the applicability of Pb/Ca analyses of A. islandica shells to reconstruct location specific anthropogenic lead pollution.

Hydrophobic organic compounds are common in the environment, especially in water bodies like rivers and lakes. Generally, due to their physico-chemical characteristics, mainly to hydrophobicity, these compounds are adsorbed by suspended material or other compartments which provide compatibility. Thus, compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are rapidly adsorbed onto suspended material or even naturally occurring biofilms in water bodies. Biofilms can be defined as complex structures with cells and aggregates of cells. The extracellular polymers present empty spaces that can be filled by water. The biofilm is a sessile microbial community with several kinds of organisms such as bacteria, protozoa, fungi, algae, and extracellular polymeric substances, which may be found on almost any surface exposed to water. Here, biofilms were used to monitor the presence of PAHs in the Barigui River in Curitiba, Brazil. For the measurements and collection of representative microcoenoses, a biofilm sampling device was designed consisting of six glass plates installed in an open polyvinyl chloride pipe of 30 cm diameter and 60 cm length. The sampling device was exposed in the Barigui River for 2 weeks campaigns. The formed biofilm was treated and chemical analysis was performed for PAHs determination. The results showed that biofilms can trap most of the PAHs, especially those with high K ₒw values (octanol–water partition coefficient). Four campaigns were conducted. The total PAHs concentration ranged from 11,204.34 ± 560.12 to 45,846.90 ± 2,290.45 ng/g. According to the isomers ratio, the main source of PAHs in the first and second campaign was of pyrolytic origin, in other words, the PAHs were by-products from burning of light-refined oil products (gasoline and diesel oil). Meanwhile, the other campaigns revealed that the main source is of petrogenic origin. However, the possibility of both sources is not discarded considering the scenario studied and the records of sediments samples. Most of the investigations carried out focused on the loading of river sediments and suspended solids, but the biofilms might detect the amount that could be taken up by benthic organisms, for instance.

More than 30 epiphytic lichens, collected in Agadir (Morroco) and along a 150-km transect from the Atlantic Ocean eastward, were analyzed for their metal content and lead isotopic composition. This dataset was used to evaluate atmospheric metal contamination and the impact of the city on the surrounding area. The concentrations of Cu, Pb, and Zn (average ±â€‰1 SD) were 20.9 ±â€‰15.2 μg g−1, 13.8 ±â€‰9.0 μg g−1, and 56.6 ±â€‰26.6 μg g−1, respectively, with the highest values observed in lichens collected within the urban area. The 206Pb/207Pb and 208Pb/207Pb ratios in the lichens varied from 1.146 to 1.186 and from 2.423 to 2.460, respectively. Alkyllead-gasoline sold in Morocco by the major petrol companies gave isotopic ratios of 206Pb/207Pb = 1.076–1.081 and 208Pb/207Pb = 2.348–2.360. These new, homogeneous values for gasoline-derived lead improve and update the scarce isotopic database of potential lead sources in Morocco, and may be of great value to future environmental surveys on the presence of lead in natural reservoirs, where it persists over time (e.g., soils and sediments). The interest of normalizing metal concentrations in lichens to concentrations of a lithogenic element is demonstrated by the consistency of the results thus obtained with lead isotopic ratios. Leaded gasoline contributed less than 50% of the total amount of lead accumulated in lichens, even in areas subject to high vehicular traffic. This strongly suggests that the recent banishment of leaded gasoline in Morocco will not trigger a drastic improvement in air quality, at least in Agadir.

Electrical resistivity tomography (2D ERT) is a powerful tool for the diagnosis of the subsoil state and to pursue an environmental monitoring in time to detect and follow a temporal evolution of plumes in hydrocarbon-contaminated soils. In situ, 2D ERT was conducted to investigate the electrical properties of the subsoil in three petrol stations in Murcia semiarid Region (SE Spain), which have been active for many years, in order to look for anomalous areas that could be related to the presence of a non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) contaminant plume in the subsoil. A total of 18 ERT profiles in wet and dry season were conducted to study the seasonal effects in the resistivity values of the subsoil. Dipole–dipole array was set up to make the soil diagnosis, achieving a good vertical and lateral resistivity distributions for the sites investigated. Interpretations obtained from ERT pseudo-sections, after a processing and inversion data process with PROSYS II and RES2DINV software, show delimited highly resistive regions above 2,000 Ω·m at 2 m deep related to the underground storage tanks (USTs) position and the filling ports and anomalous resistivity areas where boreholes and further GC–FID determination in soil samples have been done. No significant differences have been found between results obtained in dry and wet seasons. Thus, the geo-electrical non-destructive technique ERT is presented as a tool to delineate the USTs positions and to point out anomaly in the subsoil that could contain NAPL, helping to design sampling strategies, saving cost and time.

BACKGROUND: Air samples collected on three different urban sites in East of France (Strasbourg, Besançon, and Spicheren), from April 2006 to January 2007, were characterized to measure the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the particulate phase (PM10) and to examine their seasonal variation, diurnal variations, and emission sources. RESULTS: The average concentrations of ΣPAHs were 12.6, 9.5, and 8.9 ng m−3 for the Strasbourg, Besançon, and Spicheren sites, respectively. Strong seasonal variations of individual PAH concentrations were found at the three sampling sites, with higher levels in the winter that gradually decreased to the lowest levels in the summer. The diurnal variations of PAH concentrations in summer presented highest concentrations during the morning (04:00–10:00) and the evening (16:00–22:00) times, indicating the important contribution from vehicle emissions, in the three sampling sites. Furthermore, the ratio of BaP/BeP suggests that the photochemical degradation of PAHs can suppress their concentrations in the midday/afternoon (10:00–16:00), time interval of highest global irradiance. In winter, concentrations of PAH were highest during the evening (16:00–22:00) time, suggesting that domestic heating can potentially be an important source for particulate PAH, for the three sampling sites. CONCLUSION: Diagnostic ratios were used to identify potential sources of PAHs. Results showed that vehicle emissions may be the major source of PAHs, especially in summer, with a prevalent contribution of diesel engines rather than gasoline engines at the three sites studied, independently of the seasons.
