Association of weather, air pollutants, and seasonal influenza with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease hospitalization risks

The influences of weather and air pollutants on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have been well-studied. However, the heterogeneous effects of different influenza viral infections, air pollution and weather on COPD admissions and re-admissions have not been thoroughly examined. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the relationships between meteorological variables, air pollutants, seasonal influenza, and hospital admissions and re-admissions due to COPD in Hong Kong, a non-industrial influenza epicenter. A total number of 507703 hospital admissions (i.e., index admissions) and 301728 re-admission episodes (i.e., episodes within 30 days after the previous discharge) for COPD over 14 years (1998–2011) were obtained from all public hospitals. The aggregated weekly numbers were matched with meteorological records and outdoor air pollutant concentrations. Type-specific and all-type influenza-like illness positive (ILI+) rates were used as proxies for influenza activity. Generalized additive models were used in conjunction with distributed-lag non-linear models to estimate the associations of interest. According to the results, high concentrations of fine particulate matter, oxidant gases, and cold weather were strong independent risk factors of COPD outcomes. The cumulative adjusted relative risks exhibited a monotone increasing trend except for ILI+ B, and the numbers were statistically significant over the entire observed range of ILI+ total and ILI+ A/H3N2 when the reference rate was zero. COPD hospitalization risk from influenza infection was higher in the elderly than that in the general population. In conclusion, our results suggest that health administrators should impose clean air policies, such as strengthening emissions control on petrol vehicles, to reduce pollution from oxidant gases and particulates. An extension of the influenza vaccination program for patients with COPD may need to be encouraged: for example, vaccination may be included in hospital discharge planning, particularly before the winter epidemic.

The deployment of aqueous film forming foams (AFFF) used for firefighting during emergencies and training often releases per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) into the environment. In October 2018, first responders in Providence, RI, USA applied an AFFF during a fuel spill. Due to the proximity of the incident to the upper reaches of Narragansett Bay (NB), an unknown quantity of gasoline and AFFF entered the estuary via surface runoff and stormwater drains. Water samples near the spill were collected approximately 15 h after the incident and analyzed for 24 PFAS. Minor increases in measured PFAS concentrations were observed relative to pre- and post-spill samples at monitoring sites near the incident, except 6:2-fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2-FTS) that peaked post-spill (max 311 ng/L). After performing the total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay on water samples and the AFFF concentrate, significant increases in perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) were observed. One compound, 6:2 fluorotelomer mercaptoalkylamido sulfonate (6:2-FTSAS), was identified as a major component of the AFFF used. Peak areas of 6:2-FTSAS and the degradation product 6:2-FTSAS-sulfoxide corresponded to observed increases in the TOP assay results and were useful as tracers of AFFF in surrounding waters. Elevated levels of PFAS at the time of sampling were limited to a confined area of the Providence River due to river flow and tidal action. Observed concentrations were also compared to hydrodynamic model results, and results confirmed rapid dissipation of AFFF components with distance from the spill. However, modeled results did not capture possible secondary releases of AFFF from local municipal stormwater and sewer infrastructure, as observational data suggest. The multiple lines of evidence of PFAS present in surface waters permitted a better assessment of the potential environmental impacts from products such as AFFF for which the chemical composition is largely unknown.

Engine start-stop (S&S) technology has been substantially incorporated into modern vehicles to save fuel during idling in congested urban areas because fuel economy regulations have become more stringent. However, the potential for increasing particle emissions after engine restarts, especially in cold environments, is of great concern. To investigate the effects of S&S systems on fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions, a chassis dynamometer was employed to measure the fuel consumption, particulate matter (PM), solid particle number (PN), particle number size distribution and black carbon (BC) for a typical gasoline direct injection vehicle when the S&S was on (S&S-on) and when the S&S was off (S&S-off) according to the worldwide harmonized light-duty test cycle in both hot (28 °C) and cold (5 °C) environments. S&S operation resulted in 3.1–4.3% fuel-savings at 28 °C but had a tendency to increase particulate emissions, especially of BC (21.8–31.8%) and PM (19.2–32.8%). Although PN emissions with S&S-on over the entire cycle were slightly lower than those with S&S-off, more particles were emitted during the engine restart moments. In a cold environment, the fuel-savings advantage of the S&S system was weakened, and the negative impacts on the particle emissions during the restart moment worsened. The S&S system resulted in higher abundances of accumulation mode particles, especially under cold ambient conditions. The relationship between the PN reduction rates and idling segments was determining to be exponential. Our results indicate that the S&S system, which may increase particle emissions during restarts, does save fuel, and that a comprehensive evaluation of the system in cold environments is needed to determine the serviceability of new engine technologies and after-treatments.

Increased interest in backyard food production has drawn attention to the risks associated with urban trace element contamination, in particular lead (Pb) that was used in abundance in Pb-based paints and gasoline. Here we examine the sources, pathways and risks associated with environmental Pb in urban gardens, domestic chickens and their eggs. A suite of other trace element concentrations (including As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) are reported from the sampled matrices. Sixty-nine domestic chickens from 55 Sydney urban gardens were sampled along with potential sources (feed, soil, water), blood Pb concentrations and corresponding concentrations in eggs. Age of the sampled chickens and house age was also collected. Commercial eggs (n = 9) from free range farms were analysed for comparative purposes. Study outcomes were modelled using the large Australian VegeSafe garden soil database (>20,000 samples) to predict which areas of inner-city Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are likely to have soil Pb concentrations unsuitable for keeping backyard chickens. Soil Pb concentrations was a strong predictor of chicken blood and egg Pb (p=<0.00001). Almost 1 in 2 (n = 31/69) chickens had blood Pb levels >20 μg/dL, the level at which adverse effects may be observed. Older homes were correlated with higher chicken blood Pb (p = 0.00002) and egg Pb (p = 0.005), and younger chickens (<12 months old) had greater Pb concentrations, likely due to increased Pb uptake during early life development. Two key findings arose from the study data: (i) in order to retain chicken blood Pb below 20 μg/dL, soil Pb needs to be < 166 mg/kg; (ii) to retain egg Pb < 100 μg/kg (i.e. a food safety benchmark value), soil Pb needs to be < 117 mg/kg. These concentrations are significantly lower than the soil Pb guideline of 300 mg/kg for residential gardens. This research supports the conclusion that a large number of inner-city homes may not be suitable for keeping chickens and that further work regarding production and consumption of domestic food is warranted.

Spatial variation of the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was evaluated within an urban-industrial district where the main anthropogenic pressures are a 15 MW biomass power plant (BPP) and road traffic. The use of a high-density lichen transplant network and wind quantitative relationships made it possible to perform a hierarchical analysis of contamination. Combined uni-bi and multivariate statistical analyses of the resulting databases revealed a dual pattern. In its surroundings (local scale), the BPP affected the bioaccumulation of fluoranthene, pyrene and total PAHs, although a confounding effect of traffic (mostly petrol/gasoline engines) was evident. Spatial variation of the rate of diesel vehicles showed a significant association with that of acenaphthylene, acenaphthene, fluorene, anthracene and naphthalene. The series of high-speed wind values suggests that wind promotes diffusion rather than dispersion of the monitored PAHs. At the whole study area scale, the BPP was a source of acenaphthylene and acenaphthene, while diesel vehicles were a source of acenaphthylene. PAHs contamination strongly promotes oxidative stress (a threefold increase vs pre-exposure levels) in lichen transplants, suggesting a marked polluting effect of anthropogenic sources especially at the expense of the mycobiont. The proposed monitoring approach could improve the apportionment of the different contributions of point and linear anthropogenic sources of PAHs, mitigating the reciprocal biases affecting their spatial patterns.

This research apportioned size-resolved particulate matter (PM) contributions in a megacity in northern China based on a full year of measurements of both inorganic and organic markers. Ions, elements, carbon fractions, n-alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), hopanes and steranes in 9 p.m. size fractions were analyzed. High molecular weight PAHs concentrated in fine PM, while most other organic compounds showed two peaks. Both two-way and three-way receptor models were used for source apportionment of PM in different size ranges. The three-way receptor model gave a clearer separation of factors than the two-way model, because it uses a combination of chemical composition and size distributions, so that factors with similar composition but distinct size distributions (like more mature and less mature coal combustion) can be resolved. The three-way model resolved six primary and three secondary factors. Gasoline vehicles and coal and biomass combustion, nitrate and high relative humidity related secondary aerosol, and resuspended dust and diesel vehicles (exhaust and non-exhaust) are the top two contributors to pseudo-ultrafine (<0.43 μm), fine (0.43–2.1 μm) and coarse mode (>2.1 μm) PM, respectively. Mass concentration of PM from coal and biomass combustion, industrial emissions, and diesel vehicle sources showed a bimodal size distribution, but gasoline vehicles and resuspended dust exhibited a peak in the fine and coarse mode, separately. Mass concentration of sulphate, nitrate and secondary organic aerosol exhibited a bimodal distribution and were correlated with temperature, indicating strong photochemical processing and repartitioning. High relative humidity related secondary aerosol was strongly associated with size shifts of PM, NO₃⁻ and SO₄²⁻ from the usual 0.43–0.65 μm to 1.1–2.1 μm. Our results demonstrated the dominance of primary combustion sources in the <0.43 μm particle mass, in contrast to that of secondary aerosol in fine particle mass, and dust in coarse particle mass in the Northern China megacity.

Urban parks are an important part of the urban ecological environment. The environmental quality of parks is related to human health. To evaluate sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils of urban parks and their possible health risks, soil samples from 122 parks in Beijing, China, were collected and analyzed. The total content of 16 PAHs between 0.066 and 6.867 mg/kg. Four-ring PAHs were predominant, followed by 5-ring PAHs, while the fraction of 2-ring PAHs was the lowest. The dominant PAHs sources were found to be coal combustion and oil fuels such as gasoline and diesel. A conditional inference tree (CIT) was used to identify the key influencing factors for PAHs. Traffic emissions was the most important factor, followed by coal consumption, as well as the history and location of the park. Incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) for urban park soil in Beijing were low under normal conditions. The soil PAHs exposure pathway risk for both children and adults decreased in the following order: ingestion > dermal contact > inhalation. The risk from soil in parks to children’s health is slightly higher than that of adults, although the health risk due to exposure to PAHs was not extraordinary. Ecosystem risk was negligible.

This study was designed to investigate the seasonal characteristics and apportion the sources of organic carbon during non-haze days (<75 μg m⁻³) and haze (≥75 μg m⁻³) events at Pinggu, a rural Beijing site. Time-resolved concentrations of carbonaceous aerosols and organic molecular tracers were measured during the winter of 2016 and summer 2017, and a Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) model was applied to estimate the average source contributions. The concentration of OC in winter is comparable with previous studies, but relatively low during the summer. The CMB model apportioned seven separate primary sources, which explained on average 73.8% on haze days and 81.2% on non-haze days of the organic carbon in winter, including vegetative detritus, biomass burning, gasoline vehicles, diesel vehicles, industrial coal combustion, residential coal combustion and cooking. A slightly lower percentage of OC was apportioned in the summer campaign with 64.5% and 78.7% accounted for. The other unapportioned OC is considered to consist of secondary organic carbon (SOC). During haze episodes in winter, coal combustion and SOC were the dominant sources of organic carbon with 23.3% and 26.2%, respectively, followed by biomass burning emissions (20%), whereas in summer, industrial coal combustion and SOC were important contributors. Diurnal contribution cycles for coal combustion and biomass burning OC showed a peak at 6–9 pm, suggesting domestic heating and cooking were the main sources of organic aerosols in this rural area. Backward trajectory analysis showed that high OC concentrations were measured when the air mass was from the south, suggesting that the organic aerosols in Pinggu were affected by both local emissions and regional transport from central Beijing and Hebei province during haze episodes. The source apportionment by CMB is compared with the results of a Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) analysis of ACSM data for non-refractory PM₁, showing generally good agreement.

Atmospheric heavy metal contamination is becoming a serious threat to environmental and human health in Chinese megacities. This study evaluated the concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) and Pb isotopic compositions in herbarium and native bryophytes collected from Guangzhou from 1932 to 2018. Relatively low mean metal concentrations were measured for bryophytes collected in the 1930s. The highest mean concentrations of Cd (0.72 ± 0.32 mg/kg), Cu (28.1 ± 9.8 mg/kg), Pb (125.9 ± 62.4 mg/kg) and Zn (273 ± 130 mg/kg) were found in the bryophytes from 1979 to 2000, following the commencement of the Reform and Opening-Up Program in 1978. The mean Pb concentrations (74.7 ± 6.3 mg/kg) decreased sharply from 2001 onwards, following the cessation of leaded petrol across the Chinese mainland in 2000. However, these values are still higher than those in 1950–1978, corresponding to a significant increase in atmospheric Pb emissions from coal combustion, nonferrous metal smelting and motor vehicle petrol consumption in China in the 2000s. The lead isotopic ratios of bryophyte archives (²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁷Pb 1.141–1.229, ²⁰⁸Pb/²⁰⁷Pb 2.376–2.482) indicate that lithogenic input and anthropogenic input arising from leaded petrol and industrial emissions have been the main sources of atmospheric heavy metal deposition in the city of Guangzhou over the past 85 years. Herbarium bryophyte can be utilised to reconstruct temporal and spatial shifts in atmospheric heavy metal deposition to better understand and manage the current air quality in Chinese megacities.
Show more [+] Less [-]Comparative health risk assessment of in-vehicle exposure to formaldehyde and acetaldehyde for taxi drivers and passengers: Effects of zone, fuel, refueling, vehicle's age and model

This study aimed to assess the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of in-vehicle exposure in Tehran, Iran to formaldehyde and acetaldehyde for different models of taxis, and to explore the effects of city zone, taxi vehicle type, the taxi's age (<1, 1–5, 5–10), fuel type (gasoline, CNG, and LPG), and refueling activities on the estimated health risks based on previously measured concentrations. The overall and age-specific carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of these compounds for taxi drivers and passengers were estimated separately using Monte Carlo simulations. Three scenarios of exposure frequency were defined for taxis commuting in different zones of city: Restricted Traffic Zone (RTZ) and Odd-Even Zone (OEZ) as two plans to reduce air pollution, and no-restriction zone (NRZ). The carcinogenic risks for drivers and passengers, the average risks of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde for most cases were above the 1 × 10⁻⁴. The health risks were greater in Restricted Traffic Zone (RTZ) and Odd-Even Zone (OEZ) in comparison to no-restriction zone (NRZ). The carcinogenic risk from formaldehyde exposures were higher than those for acetaldehyde in all cases. Taxis fueled with LPG showed lower cancer risks for both acetaldehyde and formaldehyde. Refueling increased the carcinogenic risk from both compounds. For non-carcinogenic risks from acetaldehyde, the average hazard ratios for both drivers and passengers were >1, indicating a non-negligible risk. Cancer and non-cancer risks for the taxi drivers were greater than the passengers given the higher time of occupancy. The present study showed that transportation in taxis can impose significant long-term health risks to both passengers and drivers. Development and investment in cleaner choices for public transportations are required.
