To investigate the chronic toxicity of graphene oxide (GO) and its functionalized products (GO-carboxyl, GO-imidazole and GO-polyethylene glycol), a two-generation study was conducted using the aquatic model species Daphnia magna. Each generation of daphnids were exposed for 21 days to 1.0 mg L−1 graphene material, with body length, neonate number, time of first brood and the intrinsic rate of natural increase (r) assessed as endpoints. Chronic exposure to GO, GO-carboxyl, and GO-imidazole had no adverse effect on body length or offspring number in the daphnid F0 generation, however, this exposure paradigm led to significant growth or reproduction inhibition in the following generation. Meanwhile, GO was found to show the strongest inhibitory effect, sequentially followed by GO-carboxyl and GO-imidazole. With exposure to GO-polyethylene glycol, no significant effects on growth or reproduction were observed for both F0 and F1 generation daphnids. These results reveal that carboxyl, imidazole and polyethylene glycol functional attachments alleviate the bio-toxicity of GO, especially polyethylene glycol. The increased C/O atomic ratio present in GO-carboxyl, GO-imidazole and GO-polyethylene glycol due to functionalization may mainly explain the reduced toxicity.

Understanding the colloidal stability of graphene is essential for predicting its transport and ecological risks in aquatic environments. We investigated the agglomeration of ¹⁴C-labeled few-layer graphene (FLG) at concentrations spanning nearly four orders of magnitude (2 μg/L to 10 mg/L) using dynamic light scattering and sedimentation measurements. FLG agglomerates formed rapidly in deionized water at concentrations >3 mg/L. From 1 mg/L to 3 mg/L, salt-induced agglomeration was decreased with dilution of FLG suspensions; the critical coagulation concentration of the more concentrated suspension (3 mg/L) was significantly lower than the dilute suspension (1 mg/L) in the presence of NaCl (1.6 mmol/L and 10 mmol/L, respectively). In contrast, FLG underwent slow agglomeration and settling at concentrations ≤0.1 mg/L in NaCl solutions and ambient waters with low ionic strength (<10 mmol/L). FLG nanoparticles with smaller lateral sizes (25 nm–75 nm) were shown to agglomerate more slowly than larger FLG, and these small FLG particles exhibited greater bioaccumulation in zebrafish embryo and stronger chorion penetration ability than larger FLG particles. These findings suggest that FLG at more environmentally relevant concentration is relatively stable and may have implications for exposure of small FLG to ecological receptors.

Graphene nanoparticles are increasingly released into the aquatic environment with the growth of production. However, there are rare investigations focusing on the interaction of nanoparticles with other contaminants. Triphenyl phosphate (TPP) is a frequently detected organophosphate flame retardant in the environment. This study aimed to assess the joint effects of graphene and TPP on Mytilus galloprovincialis hemocytes. Oxidative stress could be induced by graphene and TPP in mussel hemocytes, which could further cause apoptosis, DNA damage and decrease in the lysosomal membrane stability (LMS). Moreover, hemocytes could internalize graphene, thereby resulting in oxidative stress. The oxidative stress and DNA damage in hemocytes were increased in the graphene-exposed group, but significantly reduced after combined exposure of graphene and TPP. The up-regulated genes, including NF-κB, Bcl-2 and Ras, were mainly associated with reduced apoptosis and DNA damage after co-exposure to graphene and TPP.

A novel approach for in vivo determination of typical N/O/S-containing PAHs located on the epidermis of mangrove roots was developed using graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as a fluorescence quencher. The decreasing fluorescence intensity from GQDs was attributed to the amount of N/O/S-containing PAHs introduced onto the epidermis of mangrove roots. The linear ranges of the proposed method were 10.3–980ngg⁻¹, 9.5–1350ngg⁻¹ and 7.8–1200ngg⁻¹ for DBF, DBT and CAR located on the epidermis of K. obovata roots, respectively. This method was also shown to be valid for quantifying the N/O/S-containing PAHs on the root epidermis in the presence of heavy metal (10mmolL⁻¹) and dissolved organic matter (1mgL⁻¹ C). Moreover, the death rates of epidermal cells were almost unchanged (p>0.05) after acquiring the fluorescence spectra, which is superior to the previously reported LITRF method with which the cell death rates increased to 42.6%.

Nowadays, due to increase in worldwide population and rapid urbanization, water demand in the region is increasing fast while water quality is deteriorating. The physical, chemical, and biological characteristics are changing in a fast way due to the accumulation of contaminants such as heavy metals, synthetic dyes, and organic and inorganic materials. This makes the water harmful for the biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystem. Various noble approaches have been employed by the researchers in order to replace the traditional wastewater treatment methods. In this regard, nano-technology has occupied a central position in the areas of research. The term “nano-technology” is a branch of science which acknowledges the manipulation of materials at nano-scale. These materials may have large specific surface area, high reactivity, degree of functionalization, size-dependent properties, etc., which make them suitable for execution in water purification and wastewater treatment. This paper briefly reviews the current advances and application of nano-materials for wastewater treatment. Here, various types of nano-materials such as carbon nano-tubes, MnO₂ nano-sheets, graphene composites, metal oxides, antimicrobial nano-materials, and photocatalysts, which are employed in the field of wastewater treatment, have been dissertated.

A novel PbO2/graphite felt electrode was constructed by electrochemical deposition of PbO2 on graphite felt and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The prepared electrode is a viable technology for inactivation of Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, and Artemia salina as indicator organisms in simulated ballast water treatment, which meets the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Regulation D-2. The effects of contact time and current density on inactivation were investigated. An increase in current density generally had a beneficial effect on the inactivation of the three species. E.faecalis and A.salina were more resistant to electrochemical disinfection than E. coli. The complete disinfection of E.coli was achieved in <8min at an applied current density of 253A/m2. Complete inactivation of E. faecalis and A.salina was achieved at the same current density after 60 and 40min of contact time, respectively. A. salina inactivation follows first-order kinetics.

Using enrichment culture technique, three isolates marked as ODB-1, ODB-2 and ODB-3, were selected from oil contaminated seawater. 16S rDNA gene sequencing indicated that ODB-1 affiliated with Pseudomonas sp. while ODB-2 and ODB-3 affiliated with Brevundimonas sp. Subsequently, the bacterial cells were immobilized on the surface of expanded graphite (EG), expanded perlite (EP) and bamboo charcoal (BC). Among the three isolates, ODB-1 showed a strong binding to the bio-carriers through extracellular polysaccharides, while ODB-2 and ODB-3 made the adhesion to bio-carrier through direct physical adsorption. The immobilized bacteria exhibited good salinity tolerance compared with the planktonic bacteria. Their total diesel oil removal rates were more than 85% after 6 days’ incubation. Adsorption–biodegradation process played an important role in the oil-pollution remediation. EG-bacteria system was treated as a promising remediation method, which achieved nearly 100% removal of diesel oil. Thereinto, over 83% removal of diesel oil owed to biodegradation.

Drinking water shortage has become worse in recent decades. A new capacitive deionization (CDI) method for increasing water supplies through the effective desalination of seawater has been developed. Silver as nano Ag and Ag@C which was prepared by carbonization of the Ag+-β-cyclodextrin complex at 573K for 30min can add the antimicrobial function into the CDI process. The Ag@C and Ag nanoparticles dispersed on reduced graphene oxide (Ag@C/rGO and nano Ag/rGO) were used as the CDI electrodes. The nano Ag/rGO and Ag@C/rGO electrodes can reduce the charging resistant, and enhance the electrosorption capability. Better CDI efficiencies with the nano Ag/rGO and Ag@C/rGO electrodes can therefore be obtained. When reversed the voltage, the electrodes can be recovered up to 90% within 5min. This work presents the feasibility for the nano Ag and Ag@C on rGO electrodes applied in CDI process to produce drinking water from seawater or saline water.

Magnetic expanded graphite (MEG) was prepared using the blended calcination method under a nitrogen atmosphere. MEG was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetization (VSM). Results show that the cobalt ferrite nanoparticles were uniformly and efficiently deposited on expanded graphite (EG). The saturation magnetization reached 55.05emug−1, and the adsorption capacity of MEG under the optimal condition was 35.72gg−1 for crude oil.

Photocatalytic technology has been widely studied by researchers in the field of environmental purification. This technology can not only completely convert organic pollutants into small molecules of CO₂ and H₂O through redox reactions but also remove metal ions and other inorganic substances from water. This article reviews the research progress of graphene-based photocatalytic nanocomposites in the treatment of wastewater. First, we elucidate the basic principles of photocatalysis, the types of graphene-based nanocomposites, and the role of graphene in photocatalysis (e.g., graphene can accelerate the separation of photon-hole pairs and increase the intensity and range of light absorption). Second, the preparation, characterization, and application of composites in wastewater are introduced. We also discuss the kinetic model of the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. Finally, the enhancement mechanism of graphene in terms of photocatalysis is not completely clear, and graphene-based photocatalysts with high catalytic efficiency, low cost, and large-scale production have not yet appeared, so there is an urgent need for more extensive and in-depth research.
