Rapid urbanization and economic growth has led to significant increase in municipal solid waste generation in India during the last few decades and its management has become a major issue because of poor waste management practices. Solid waste generated is deposited into open dumping sites with hardly any segregation and processing. Carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) are the major greenhouse gases that are released from the landfill sites due to the biodegradation of organic matter. In this present study, CH₄ and CO₂ emissions from a landfill in north-east India are estimated using a flux chamber during September, 2015 to August, 2016. The average emission rates of CH₄ and CO₂ are 68 and 92 mg/min/m², respectively. The emissions are highest in the summer whilst being lowest in winter. The diurnal variation of emissions indicated that the emissions follow a trend similar to temperature in all the seasons. Correlation coefficients of CH₄ and temperature in summer, monsoon and winter are 0.99, 0.87 and 0.97, respectively. The measured CH₄ in this study is in the range of other studies around the world. Modified Triangular Method (MTM), IPCC model and the USEPA Landfill gas emissions model (LandGEM) were used to predict the CH₄ emissions during the study year. The consequent simulation results indicate that the MTM, LandGEM-Clean Air Act, LandGEM-Inventory and IPCC models predict 1.9, 3.3, 1.6 and 1.4 times of the measured CH₄ emission flux in this study. Assuming that this higher prediction of CH₄ levels observed in this study holds well for other landfills in this region, a new CH₄ emission inventory (Units: Tonnes/year), with a resolution of 0.1⁰ × 0.1⁰ has been developed. This study stresses the importance of biodegradable composition of waste and meteorology, and also points out the drawbacks of the widely used landfill emission models.

Carbon monoxide (CO) emissions in China in 2005–2010 were estimated by inversion, using the Green's function method from vertical CO profiles derived from MOPITT Version 5 satellite data and a tagged CO simulation, and validated with independent in situ observations from the World Data Centre for Greenhouse Gases. Modeling with a posteriori emission successfully reproduced CO outflow from the continent to the East China Sea, Sea of Japan, and Japanese islands during winter and spring, and compensated for underestimates in central and eastern China in summer. A posteriori emissions showed large seasonal variations in which December and March emissions were on average 23% larger than August emissions, consistent with other studies. Estimated Chinese CO emissions were 184.4, 173.1, 184.6, 158.4, 157.4, and 157.3 Tg/year for 2005–2010, respectively. The decrease after 2007 is partly attributed to Chinese socioeconomic conditions and improved combustion efficiency.

Agricultural residue burning is one of the major causes of greenhouse gas emissions and aerosols in the Indo-Ganges region. In this study, we characterize the fire intensity, seasonality, variability, fire radiative energy (FRE) and aerosol optical depth (AOD) variations during the agricultural residue burning season using MODIS data. Fire counts exhibited significant bi-modal activity, with peak occurrences during April–May and October–November corresponding to wheat and rice residue burning episodes. The FRE variations coincided with the amount of residues burnt. The mean AOD (2003–2008) was 0.60 with 0.87 (+1σ) and 0.32 (−1σ). The increased AOD during the winter coincided well with the fire counts during rice residue burning season. In contrast, the AOD-fire signal was weak during the summer wheat residue burning and attributed to dust and fossil fuel combustion. Our results highlight the need for ‘full accounting of GHG’s and aerosols’, for addressing the air quality in the study area.

Pakistan is facing problem of deforestation. Pakistan lost 14.7% of its forest habitat between 1990 and 2005 interval. This paper assesses the present forest wood consumption rate by 6000 brick kilns established in the country and its implications in terms of deforestation and emission of greenhouse gases. Information regarding consumption of forest wood by the brick kilns was collected during a manual survey of 180 brick kiln units conducted in eighteen provincial divisions of country. Considering annual emission contributions of three primary GHGs i.e., CO2, CH4 and N2O, due to burning of forest wood in brick kiln units in Pakistan and using IPCC recommended GWP indices, the combined CO2-equivalent has been estimated to be 533019 t y-1.

We present a user-friendly tool for footprint calculations of flux measurements in the surface layer. The calculations are based on the analytical footprint model by Kormann, R. and Meixner, F.X. [2001. An analytical footprint model for Non-neutral Stratification. Boundary-Layer Meteorology 99, 207-224]. The footprint density function of a flux sensor is determined using readily available data from standard eddy covariance measurements. This footprint density function is integrated over defined surface areas given as quadrangular polygons representing e.g. agricultural fields. We illustrate the use and performance of the tool by applying it to CO2 flux measurements with three eddy covariance system at the Swiss CarboEurope grassland site. Two flux towers were positioned in the centre of two neighbouring fields, respectively, that showed a very different CO2 flux during the study period. The third tower was located near the border of the two fields and was frequently influenced by both fields to a similar degree. The calculated footprint fractions were used to simulate the latter flux from the other two systems. The measured and simulated fluxes showed a good agreement and thus support the reliability of the footprint calculation. The presented simple footprint tool can be used as a routine quality check for flux monitoring stations influenced by surface areas with varying vegetation covers and/or land-use. A simple tool for operational footprint calculations is presented and its reliability is assessed using CO2 flux measurements in a patchy agricultural landscape.

Nitrogen loss via overland flow from agricultural land use is a global threat to waterways. On-farm denitrifying woodchip bioreactors can mitigate NO₃⁻ exports by increasing denitrification capacity. However, denitrification in sub-optimal conditions releases the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N₂O), swapping the pollution from aquatic to atmospheric reservoirs. Here, we assess NO₃⁻-N removal and N₂O emissions from a new edge-of-field surface-flow bioreactor during ten rain events on intensive farming land. Nitrate removal rates (NRR) varied between 5.4 and 76.2 g NO₃⁻-N m⁻³ wetted woodchip d⁻¹ with a mean of 30.3 ± 7.3 g NO₃⁻-N m⁻³. The nitrate removal efficiency (NRE) was ∼73% in ideal hydrological conditions and ∼18% in non-ideal conditions. The fraction of NO₃⁻-N converted to N₂O (rN₂O) in the bioreactor was ∼3.3 fold lower than the expected 0.75% IPCC emission factor. We update the global bioreactor estimated Q₁₀ (NRR increase every 10 °C) from a recent meta-analysis with previously unavailable data to >20 °C, yielding a new global Q₁₀ factor of 3.1. Mean N₂O CO₂-eq emissions (431.9 ± 125.4 g CO₂-eq emissions day⁻¹) indicate that the bioreactor was not significantly swapping aquatic NO₃⁻ for N₂O pollution. Our estimated NO₃⁻-N removal from the bioreactor (9.9 kg NO₃⁻-N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹) costs US$13.14 per kg NO₃⁻-N removed and represents ∼30% NO₃⁻-N removal when incorporating all flow and overflow events. Overall, edge-of-field surface-flow bioreactors seem to be a cost-effective solution to reduce NO₃⁻-N runoff with minor pollution swapping to N₂O.

This study evaluated the greenhouse gas emissions of solid dairy manure storage with the micro-aerobic group (MA; oxygen concentration <5%) and control group (CK; oxygen concentration <1%), and explained the difference in greenhouse gas emissions by exploring bacterial community succession. The results showed that the MA remained the micro-aerobic conditions, which the maximum and average oxygen concentrations were 4.1% and 1.9%, respectively; while the average oxygen concentrations of the CK without intervention management was 0.5%. Compared with the CK, carbon dioxide and methane emissions in MA were reduced by 78.68% and 99.97%, respectively, and nitrous oxide emission was increased by almost three times with a small absolute loss, but total greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 91.23%. BugBase analysis showed that the relative abundance of aerobic bacteria in CK decreased to 0.73% on day 30, while that in MA increased to 6.56%. Genus MBA03 was significantly different between the two groups (p < 0.05) and was significantly positively correlated with carbon dioxide and methane emissions (p < 0.05). A structural equation model also revealed that the oxygen concentration and MBA03 of the MA had significant direct effects on methane emission rate (p < 0.001). The research results could provide theoretical basis and measures for directional regulation of greenhouse gas emission reduction during dairy manure storage.

Rice paddy fields are major sources of atmospheric methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O). Rice variety is an important factor affecting CH₄ and N₂O emissions. However, the interactive effects of rice metabolites and microorganisms on CH₄ and N₂O emissions in paddy fields are not clearly understood. In this study, a high greenhouse gas-emitting cultivar (YL 6) and a low greenhouse gas-emitting cultivar (YY 1540) were used as experimental materials. Metabolomics was used to examine the roots, root exudates, and bulk soil metabolites. High-throughput sequencing was used to determine the microbial community composition. YY 1540 had more secondary metabolites (flavonoids and isoflavonoids) in root exudates than YL 6. It was enriched with the uncultured members of the families Gemmatimonadanceae and Rhizobiales_Incertae_Sedis in bulk soil, and genera Burkholderia-Caballeronia-Paraburkholderia, Magnetospirillum, Aeromonas, and Anaeromyxobacter in roots, contributing to increased expression of pmoA and nosZ genes and reducing CH₄ and N₂O emissions. YL 6 roots and root exudates contained higher contents of carbohydrates [e.g., 6-O- acetylarbutin and 2-(3- hydroxyphenyl) ethanol 1′-glucoside] than those of YY 1540. They were enriched with genera RBG-16-58-14 in bulk soil and Exiguobacterium, and uncultured member of the Kineosporiaceae family in roots, which contributed to increased expression of mcrA, ammonia-oxidizing archaea, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, nirS, and nirK genes and greenhouse gas emissions. In general, these results established a link between metabolites, microorganisms, microbial functional genes, and greenhouse gas emissions. The metabolites of root exudates and roots regulated CH₄ and N₂O emissions by influencing the microbial community composition in bulk soil and roots.

The extensive use of nano-TiO₂ has caused concerns regarding their potential environmental risks. However, the stress responses and self-recovery potential of nitrogen removal and greenhouse gas N₂O emissions after long-term nano-TiO₂ exposure have seldom been addressed yet. This study explored the long-term effects of nano-TiO₂ on biological nitrogen transformations in a sequencing batch reactor at four levels (1, 10, 25, and 50 mg/L), and the reactor's self-recovery potential was assessed. The results showed that nano-TiO₂ exhibited a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on the removal efficiencies of ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen, whereas N₂O emissions unexpectedly increased. The promoted N₂O emissions were probably due to the inhibition of denitrification processes, including the reduction of the denitrifying-related N₂O reductase activity and the abundance of the denitrifying bacteria Flavobacterium. The inhibition of carbon source metabolism, the inefficient electron transfer efficiency, and the electronic competition between the denitrifying enzymes would be in charge of the deterioration of denitrification performance. After the withdrawal of nano-TiO₂ from the influent, the nitrogen transformation efficiencies and the N₂O emissions of activated sludge recovered entirely within 30 days, possibly attributed to the insensitive bacteria survival and the microbial community diversity. Overall, this study will promote the current understanding of the stress responses and the self-recovery potential of BNR systems to nanoparticle exposure.

Estuaries are considered as important sources of the global emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Urbanized estuaries often experience eutrophication under strong anthropogenic activities. Eutrophication can enhance phytoplankton abundance, leading to carbon dioxide (CO₂) consumption in the water column. Only a few studies have evaluated the relationship between GHGs and eutrophication in estuaries. In this study, we assessed the concentrations and fluxes of CO₂, methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) in combination with a suite of biogeochemical variables in four sampling campaigns over two years in a highly urbanized tropical estuary in Southeast Asia (the Saigon River Estuary, Vietnam). The impact of eutrophication on GHGs was evaluated through several statistical methods and interpreted by biological processes. The average concentrations of CO₂, CH₄ and N₂O at the Saigon River in 2019–2020 were 3174 ± 1725 μgC-CO₂ L⁻¹, 5.9 ± 16.8 μgC-CH₄ L⁻¹ and 3.0 ± 4.8 μgN-N₂O L⁻¹, respectively. Their concentrations were 13–18 times, 52–332 times, and 9–37 times higher than the global mean concentrations of GHGs, respectively. While CO₂ concentration had no clear seasonal pattern, N₂O and CH₄ concentrations significantly differed between the dry and the rainy seasons. The increase in eutrophication status along the dense urban area was linearly correlated with the increase in GHGs concentrations. The presence of both nitrification and denitrification resulted in elevated N₂O concentrations in this urban area of the estuary. The high concentration of CO₂ was contributed by the high concentration of organic carbon and mineralization process. GHGs fluxes at the Saigon River Estuary were comparable to other urbanized estuaries regardless of climatic condition. Control of eutrophication in urbanized estuaries through the implantation of efficient wastewater treatment facilities will be an effective solution in mitigating the global warming potential caused by estuarine emissions.
