The present work aims to investigate the effects of various additives on the stability of graphene nanoplatelet (GnP)–based nanofluid phase change material (NFPCM) for cold thermal energy storage (CTES). The NFPCMs are prepared by dispersing six different types of surfactants (anionic, cationic, and non-ionic types) in deionized (DI) water at a mass ratio of 1:0.5 GnP to surfactant. NFPCMs can be found to be stable with a suitable surfactant even after 30 days using zeta-potential distribution, UV–vis absorption, visual inspection, and sedimentation tests at low temperature. The maximum enhancement in thermal conductivity of 8.3% and 48.3% is recorded in both liquid and solid states for the NFPCM with gum arabic (GA) respectively. The viscosity was enhanced by the dispersion of non-ionic surfactants, where the anionic surfactant (sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS)) NFPCM had a 29.9% lower augmentation compared to DI water. Furthermore, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results demonstrate that the phase change properties of the NFPCM are significantly affected depending on the surfactant type. The maximum phase change enthalpy is lowered (10.6%) in the Tween 80 NFPCM as compared to the base PCM. The long-term stability with the highest thermal transport property of the NFPCM storage unit integrated with the chiller is capable of achieving environmental pollution remediation by minimising the time it takes to charge the PCM.

Although the green synthesis of nanometals is eco-friendly, the toxicity or safety of these biosynthesized nanoparticles in living organisms is not fully studied. This study aimed to evaluate the potential protective role of encapsulated thyme oil (ETO) against zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs). ETO was prepared using a mixture of whey protein isolate, maltodextrin, and gum Arabic, and ZnO-NPs were synthesized using parsley extract. Six groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated orally for 21 days which included the control group, ZnO-NP-treated group (25 mg/kg body weight (b.w.)), ETO-treated groups at low or high dose (50, 100 mg/kg b.w.), and the groups that received ZnO-NPs plus ETO at the two tested doses. Blood and tissue samples were collected for different assays. The results showed that carvacrol and thymol were the major components in ETO among 13 compounds isolated by GC-MS. ZnO-NPs were nearly spherical and ETOs were round in shape with an average size of 38 and 311.8 nm, respectively. Administration of ZnO-NPs induced oxidative stress, DNA damage, biochemical, ctyogentical, and histological changes in rats. ETO at the tested doses alleviated these disturbances and showed protective effects against the hazards of ZnO-NPs. It could be concluded that encapsulation of thyme oil using whey protein isolate, maltodextrin, and gum Arabic improved the antioxidant properties of ETO, probably possess synergistic effects, and can be used as a promising tool in pharmaceutical and food applications.

This work describes efforts to encapsulate savory (Satureja hortensis L.) essential oil (EO) with different natural polymers (i.e., Arabic gum/gelatin (AGG), apple pectin (AP), gelatin (G)) and, as a separate set of experiments, with bio cross-linkers (i.e., citric acid and transglutaminase enzyme). The phytotoxic activity of encapsulated savory EO on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) and amaranth weed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.) was investigated. The micro-capsules were evaluated in terms of size, polydispersity, stability, encapsulation efficiency, morphology, and release properties. The Korsmeyer–Peppas model operated when EO was being released from the micro-capsules. Carvacrol (52.5%) and γ-terpinene (30.2%) comprised the main constituents of the savory EO. Based on the results, encapsulating the EO with cross-linked biopolymers increased the stability and herbicidal activity of EO, as compared to simple EO emulsions. Maximum toxicity injuries (MTI) were caused by encapsulations of apple pectin, cross-linked with APe enzyme (15 ml/L) on both plant species. MTI were observed 2 days after using the micro-encapsulated herbicides (MCHs). However, the injury caused by MCHs on tomato was not significant. The lowest values of fresh weight (2.80 g), chlorophyll a (0.194 mg/g Fw), and total chlorophyll content (0.219 mg/g Fw) of amaranth occurred in response to APe (15 ml/L). Moreover, using AP(e) (10 ml/L) caused the lowest values of starch (0.444 mg/g Fw) and flavonoid contents (4.18 mg Cat/g Fw) in amaranth which measured as 59% and 90% reductions, respectively, in comparison with the control. The highest values of MDA (0.0109 nmol/g Fw) and H₂O₂ (0.0432 μmol/g Fw) were observed in amaranth plants treated with AP(e) (10 ml/L). In summary, cross-linked apple pectin can perform well in slow release delivery systems of agrochemicals. It can be recommended for use in the production of commercial, EO-based natural herbicides.

Solid tumors are fairly common and face many clinical difficulties since they are hardly surgically resectable and broadly do not respond to radiation and chemotherapy. The current study aimed to fabricate ginsenoside Rg3 nanoparticles (Rg3-NPs) and evaluate their antitumor effect against Ehrlich solid tumors (EST) in mice. Rg3-NPs were fabricated using whey protein isolates (WPI), maltodextrin (MD), and gum Arabic (GA). EST was developed by the injection of mice with Ehrlich ascites cells (2.5 × 10⁶). The mice were divided into a control group, EST group, and the EST groups that were treated orally 2 weeks for with normal Rg3 (3 mg/kg b.w.), Rg3-NPs at a low dose (3 mg/kg b.w.), and Rg3-NPs at a high dose (6 mg/kg b.w.). Serum and solid tumors were collected for different assays. The results revealed that synthesized Rg3-NPs showed a spherical shape with an average particle size of 20 nm and zeta potential of -5.58 mV. The in vivo study revealed that EST mice showed a significant increase in AFP, Casp3, TNF-α, MMP-9, VEGF, MDA, and DNA damage accompanied by a significant decrease in SOD and GPx. Treatment with Rg3 or Rg3-NPs decreased the tumor weight and size and induced a significant improvement in all the biochemical parameters. Rg3-NPs were more effective than Rg3, and the improvement was dose-dependent. It could be concluded that fabrication of Rg3-NPs enhanced the protective effect against EST development which may be due to the synergistic effect of Rg3 and MD, GA, and WPI.

Renewable resource–based biodegradable materials attract more attention than petroleum-based biodegradable materials to support the sustainable development of ecology. Obtaining collagen hydrolysate (CH) from hide fleshing wastes of leather industry is an environmentally friendly way to develop multifunctional materials that can contribute to technological advances in different industries. In this study, 2:1, 1:1, and 1 2 ratios of gum arabic (GA) and CH extracted from hide fleshing waste were used as wall materials to encapsulate Origanum onites L. essential oil (OOEO) using the complex coacervation method. The encapsulation yield and efficiency, functional group composition, particle size, morphology, and thermal stability of the obtained OOEO microcapsules were characterized. The results showed that the obtained microcapsules had high encapsulation yield and efficiency, as well as good functional properties such as uniform morphology and low water activity. The best mass ratio for the biopolymers (GA:CH) was 1:1. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that OOEO microcapsule samples had a spherical shape. FTIR analysis was performed on obtained microcapsules, confirming the molecular interactions between GA and CH. These findings can be useful in designing an ideal wall material using GA and CH for microencapsulation of essential oils by the complex coacervation method.

Hydrogels (HGs) based on gelatin and crosslinked with gum Arabic have been prepared by the thaw–freezing method, employing two different concentrations of gum Arabic (15 and 50% w/w). Magnetic gels or ferrogels (FGs) were prepared by applying the breath in method to incorporate iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles to the HG matrix. The obtained HG and FG were characterized by XRD, FTIR, and SEM, and the FG composition was estimated by atomic absorption spectroscopy in terms of Fe content. The adsorption of crude oil onto HG and FG was explored achieving very satisfactory results. FG was regenerated by washing with toluene, maintaining efficiency of almost 90% after the fourth cycle. Equilibrium studies were performed to determine the capacity of the prepared FG for adsorption of crude oil from seawater synthetic solutions. The experiments were carried out as a function of different initial concentrations of oil residue (24 to 240 mg/L) exploring different contact times. Equilibrium data were found to fit very well with the Sips models. The kinetic data adsorption of oil onto the FG-15 was better fitted by a pseudo-second-order kinetic indicating that at the initial stages of adsorption, external mass transfer could control the whole rate of the crude oil uptake while intraparticle diffusion controlled the global rate of adsorption at later stages. The obtained results showed that the FG prepared by employing 15% of gum Arabic as the crosslinker (FG-15) has a high removal efficiency of crude oil reaching 1.53 g/g of FG at pH 5.5 and 0.59 g/g for oil/water emulsions in the order of 0.1 g/L. The magnetic properties extend its application. The reached data suggest that the materials presented here may be useful to further the design of systems or devices intended for the remediation of petroleum spills and/or its derivatives in marine water as well as other surfaces such as polluted rocks or soil.
