Today, the problem of air pollution has been highlighted by rapid population growth and urbanisation, along with the development of industry. Over the last fifty years, much attention has been paid to the relationship between lichens and airborne particulate matter (especially heavy metals). The use of living organisms in air pollution studies is now widely accepted in many countries and the results of these biomonitoring studies are very important for future action. The goal of this study was to determine heavy metals in Kırşehir province using the bag technique, a biomonitoring approach, with Pseudevernia furfuracea (L.) Zopf lichen and to develop a pollution map of the city. In November 2002, lichen specimens were obtained from an unpolluted region in the Yapraklı Mountains, Çankırı, and transplanted to 4 distinct places in Kırşehir. After 3 and 6 months of exposure, they were collected in order to analyse heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) with Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). In addition, chlorophyll-a and chlorophyll-b contents were determined by Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) method. The findings revealed that the heavy metal contents in various stations are the result of industrial, traffic, and heating activities. As a result, P. furfuracea showed excellent bioindicator ability for detecting air pollution.

We analyzed 125 samples collected from Joypurhat district, Bangladesh, in this study. Average inorganic arsenic (IAs) content obtained from collected polished rice, tomato, potato, radish, and arum leaves 0.31 - 0.91, 0.24 - 0.61, 0.49 - 0.88, 0.40 - 0.93, and 0.30 - 0.69 mg/kg, respectively. This report summarized that almost every agronomic sample contains arsenic; the As contents remain within the permissible limit set by FAO/WHO’s guideline (1.00 mg/kg) except for the rice sample. The As concentration for the rice sample was significantly higher (0.31 - 0.91) than the prescribed limit (0.20 mg/kg). But, the As level for water (mean range, 0.10 - 0.72 mg/l), sediment (0.13 - 0.53 mg/kg), and soil samples (24.1 - 43.1 mg/kg) also significantly surpassed the permissible level. The present study is alarming for water samples, where the highest IAs concentration (0.72 mg/l) is 72 times [14 times] higher than WHO/FAO’s [Bangladesh’s] allowable limit (0.01mg/l) [0.05 mg/l]. All agronomic fields contain higher IAs (25.50 - 43.10 mg/kg) than the world standard limit (10 mg/kg). Statistical Igeo confirmed the moderate pollution of the entire agronomic field of Joypurhat except for the river’s sediment. Again, EF values ensured the anthropogenic pollution by the moderately severe enrichment of As for the 65% agronomic field and significant enrichment of As for the 35% agronomic field. Hazard estimation results revealed the privileged possibility of non-carcinogenic [carcinogenic] health hazards to regular polished rice [water] consumers. So, present study suggests that authorities should take necessary steps to prevent contamination/upcoming health risks.

This study aimed at quantifying the heavy metal levels in soils and vegetables sampled from five suburban regions of Nairobi, Kenya. Using inductively coupled plasma- mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) the metals were quantified from the samples. The assayed heavy metals including Cd, Cr, Co. Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn and the metalloid arsenic were elevated beyond the reference values in both soils and vegetables. High pollutant levels in soils were affiliated to use of industrial and domestic wastewater for irrigation, application of heavy metal containing agrochemicals and geogenic sources of the pollutants. In collard leaves, the uptake of contaminated water via the roots and subsequent accumulation in the leaves was attributable to the observed results. The total hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) as a result of arsenic and Hg was >1 in all sampled sites and >10, respectively for both indices and heavy metals. Similarly, the cancer risk (CR) and target cancer risk (TCR) from consumption of collard was greater than the recommended levels of 10-6 and 10-4, respectively with exception of Pb. The indices were indicative of negative non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic effects of consuming the vegetables to the community of the study area. The results of the study, though preliminary, suggest the need to safeguard the health of communities in the study area to ensure that they do not consume heavy metal contaminated vegetables due to the established health effects of such pollutants.

The main objective of this study is to evaluate heavy metals contamination of highly consumed vegetables and hazardous effects of consuming these vegetables. The study was conducted in vegetable fields in three different regions according to the level of environmental pollutions, including "Isfahan", "Flavarjan" and "Faridan, Golpayegan and Natanz". Six types of vegetables in each field with three replicates in each region were selected in the summer of 2017 by the random sampling method from vegetable fields. The level of heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Co, Cd and Cr) in vegetables has been measured for each sample. The result showed that in the Isfahan region, the highest daily intake of Pb, Cu, Co, Cd and Cr for the consumption of all the vegetables was obtained in the recipients. The highest target hazard quotient for non-cancerous diseases of contaminated vegetables was 28.9 and 21.1 in "Isfahan" for children and adults, respectively. The target hazard quotient for vegetable consumption was greater than one and at high hazard for both age groups. The principal component analysis showed that the contamination by the heavy metals in the "Isfahan" and "Falavarjan" regions overlapped and the risk of contamination of heavy metals in urban vegetables in both regions increased the hazard of non-cancerous diseases. It is highly recommended that the quality standards of foods that are imposed on the production of food crops.

In the present study, size-segregated samples of PM were collected from urban and semi-urban traffic junctions in Agra, India. PM samples were collected during the monsoon season (July to September 2015) using Grimm portable aerosol Spectrometer. The recorded mean concentration of PM10 at urban site was 137.09±61μg/m3 and at semi-urban site was 270.14±21μg/m3, which were higher than the suggested limits by WHO and NAAQS India. Mean concentrations of PM2.5 were 41.45±40μg/m3, 48.88±34μg/m3 at the urban and semi-urban site, respectively. Whereas, mean concentrations of PM1.0 were 30.35±64μg/m3, 12.64±4μg/m3 and PM0.25 were 0.06±0.05μg/m3, 0.17±0.06μg/m3 at the urban and semi-urban site, respectively. It was estimated that PM10, PM2.5 and PM0.25 values were higher at semi-urban site than urban sampling site but in case of PM1.0 concentrations were higher at urban site. The surface morphology of PM2.5 was studied using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results show flaky, branched chain like aggregates of carbon bearing spheres at the urban site while cluster, branched, spherical and fluffy particles at semi-urban site. The presences of carbonaceous particles were enhanced due to use of fuel combustion. Chemical analysis was done using ICP-AES. Concentrations of Zn and Cu were found higher while Ni was least in comparison to other metals. Elemental composition present in PM2.5 was used to calculate the health risk assessment to identify the possible health effect on human health, hazards quotient (HQ) values was found higher as Ingestion to inhalation pathways while ECR values found higher as Cr(VI)>Ni>Pb for both medium (Air and Dust).

Nickel and cadmium usually enter the environment and water resources through wastewater, released by various industries, and may have adverse effects. The current study employs α–Fe2O3 nanoparticles of 20-40 nm in order to remove nickel and cadmium from the wastewater of Saba Battery Company. Also, it investigates the influence of effective parameters on adsorption process, including pH, contact time, and the adsorbent rate so that it can optimize the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption rate of nickel and cadmium can be observed in pH ranges of 5 to 9. In addition, adsorption rates for nickel (at pH = 7) and for cadmium (at pH = 5) have been 92.98% and 93.97%, respectively. By increasing the adsorbent rate, the adsorption grows, due to the increase in absorbate surface area, and an optimum adsorbent rates of 0.15 g and 0.2 g are obtained for cadmium and nickel, respectively. The maximum nickel and cadmium adsorption rates occur during the first 60 min of contact with nanoparticles. In this study, adsorption kinetics and isotherms have also been investigated and it has been found that the adsorption kinetics of both nickel and cadmium ions follow the pseudo-second-order model, while adsorption isotherms of nickel and cadmium follow the Freundlich model.

Water and sediment samples have been collected from five different stations, located along Djendjen River between February and June, 2016 so that the concentrations of Cd, Ni, Zn, and Cu could be determined. The extent of the sediment pollution has been assessed, using the multiple pollution indices, namely Contamination Factor (CF), Pollution Load Index (PLI), and the geoaccumulation index (Igeo).The distribution of trace elements in water and sediment follows Ni>Zn>Cd>Cu and Zn>Ni>Cu>Cd, respectively. The water sample analysis from Djendjen River shows that the total concentrations of Cu, Ni, Cd, and Zn have been lower according to the references. In comparison, sediment mean metal concentrations with several environmental contamination parameters, like probable effect level (PEC) and background levels, indicates that the concentrations of all investigated elements are lesser than PEC, except for Ni, but higher than the background levels. The Igeo values reveal that Cd has been the most accumulated compared to the other metals.  Contamination Factor (CF) confirms that the sediment samples have been moderate in terms of all studied metals contamination. The Pollution Load Index (PLI) values have been above one (>1), indicating an advanced decline of the sediment quality.

The present study investigates the accumulation of vanadium, iron, and nickel in different depths of soil in collection sites of oil sludge, in Masjed Soleyman Oil and Gas Exploitation Company, located in Choob Sorkh Region. To conduct the research, four sampling points have been selected at the mentioned site, with one sampling point chosen outside the site, as the clean area. Soil sampling has been carried out at depths of 50 and 100 cm, using an auger. All samples are measured to evaluate heavy metals, according to the standard method of Inductive Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectroscopy. The parameters of pH, EC, density, and organic compounds have also been measured. Results have shown that EC, TOM, and density of the soil in the collection site of oil sludge were relatively higher than the reference site. In addition, statistical analysis has shown that electrical conductivity and organic compounds were influenced by the discharge of oil sludge. The mean concentrations of Ni, V, and Fe in both depths (50 cm and 100 cm) of the four studied plots were 68.8 mg/kg, 46.3 mg/kg, and 53565 mg/kg, respectively, indicating that Ni concentration is more than the acceptable limits in the soil. Although, the amounts of V (36.3 mg/kg), Ni (62 mg/kg), and Fe (19416 mg/kg) in the reference site were lower than the studied oil sludge accumulation site. Thus the study area is a place for the accumulation of oil sludge, since the high concentration of heavy metals can be attributed to human interference.

For the first time, the present study removes ions of mercury, in the form of Hg (I) and Hg (II) ions, from aqueous solutions by adsorbing them onto titanium dioxide nanoparticles. The effects of various parameters, such as solution's initial pH, temperature, sorbent dosage, initial mercury concentration, and contact time have been examined on the adsorption process. The experimental results have been compared with Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin adsorption isotherms. The maximum adsorption, obtained for Hg (I) and Hg (II) ions, have been 97.5% and 98.6%, respectively. Also, it has been shown that the Langmuir isotherm has better fitting with the equilibrium data than the Freundlich and Temkin isotherms. Thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption, such as and  have been calculated, the negative values of which show that the mercury ions adsorption is an exothermic process and that randomness is decreased, respectively. The study of adsorption kinetics shows that the adsorption of Hg (I) and (II) ions with TiO2 nanoparticles is pseudo-second order.

The contamination of riverbed sediments by heavy metals has assumedserious problems due to their toxicity and accumulative behavior. The present studyinvestigated the concentrations of heavy metals from the bottom sediments of ShitalakhyaRiver to understand the level of contamination and their distribution. The averageconcentrations of heavy metals Al, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, As, Cu, Co, Cr, and Zn are 30432.41,10929.21, 391139.13, 23148.14, 38697.37, 14.02, 143.69, 13.37, 74.82, and 200.59mg/kg respectively in river sediments, and their abundance decreased in the followingorder: Ca (79.05%)>Fe (7.82%)>Al (6.15%)>Mg (4.68%)>K (2.21%)>Zn (0.04%)>Cu(0.03%)>Cr (0.015%)>As (0.0028%)>Co (0.0027%). In most cases, the meanconcentrations of the heavy metals exceed the permissible limit. Significantly higherconcentrations of Ca, Mg, Zn, and Cu were found in sediment samples. The heavy metalscontaminations in the sediments were also evaluated by applying index of geoaccumulation(Igeo), contamination factor (Cf), degree of contamination (Cd), and pollutionload index (PLI) etc. These indices indicated that most of the samples were moderate tostrongly pollute by heavy metals and the spatial distribution showed that the northern andsouthern parts of the study area are more contaminant than middle portion.
