There is currently great interest in replacing fossil-oil with renewable fuels in energy production. Fast pyrolysis bio-oil (FPBO) made of lignocellulosic biomass is one such alternative to replace fossil oil, such as heavy fuel oil (HFO), in energy boilers. However, it is not known how this fuel change will alter the quantity and quality of emissions affecting human health. In this work, particulate emissions from a real-scale commercially operated FPBO boiler plant are characterized, including extensive physico-chemical and toxicological analyses. These are then compared to emission characteristics of heavy fuel-oil and wood fired boilers. Finally, the effects of the fuel choice on the emissions, their potential health effects and the requirements for flue gas cleaning in small-to medium-sized boiler units are discussed.The total suspended particulate matter and fine particulate matter (PM₁) concentrations in FPBO boiler flue gases before filtration were higher than in HFO boilers and lower or on a level similar to wood-fired grate boilers. FPBO particles consisted mainly of ash species and contained less polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and heavy metals than had previously been measured from HFO combustion. This feature was clearly reflected in the toxicological properties of FPBO particle emissions, which showed less acute toxicity effects on the cell line than HFO combustion particles. The electrostatic precipitator used in the boiler plant efficiently removed flue gas particles of all sizes. Only minor differences in the toxicological properties of particles upstream and downstream of the electrostatic precipitator were observed, when the same particulate mass from both situations was given to the cells.

As one of the most cost-effective and sustainable methods for contaminants' removal, sequestration and/or detoxification, phytoremediation has already captured comprehensive attention worldwide. Nevertheless, the accurate effects of various spatial pattern in enhancing phytoremediation efficiency is not yet clear, especially for the polluted mining areas. This study designed nine planting patterns (monocropping, double intercropping and triple intercropping) of three indigenous plant species (Setaria viridis (L.), Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) and Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud.) to further explore the effects of plants spatial pattern on phytoremediation efficiency. Considering the uncertainties of the residual contaminants' concentration (RCC) caused by soil anisotropy, permeability and land types, the interval transformation was introduced into the plant uptake model to simulate the remediation efficiency. Then multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) were applied to optimal the planting patterns, with the help of criteria of (a) the amount of heavy metal absorption; (b) the concentration of residual contaminant in soil; (c) root tolerance of heavy metals; (d) the total investment cost. Results showed that (1) the highest concentrations of Zn, Cd, and Pb of the polluted area were 7320.02, 14.30, 1650.51 mg kg⁻¹ (2) During the 180 days simulation, the highest RMSE of residue trace metals in soil are 3.02(Zn), 2.67(Pb), 2.89(Cd), respectively. (3) The result of IMCDA shows that the planting patterns of Setaria viridis, Echinochloa crus-galli and Phragmites australis in alternative a9 (269 mg kg⁻¹ year⁻¹) had the highest absorption rate of heavy metals compared with a7 (235 mg kg⁻¹ year⁻¹) and a2 (240 mg kg⁻¹ year⁻¹). After 20 years of remediation, the simulated RCC in a9 is far below the national standard, and the root toxicity is 0.12 (EC ≤ EC₂₀). In general, the optimal alternative derived from interval residual contaminant concentration can effectively express the dynamic of contaminant distribution and then can be effectively employed to evaluate the sustainable remediation methods.

Nitrogen (N) addition can change physicochemical properties and biogeochemical processes in soil, but whether or not these changes further affect the transport and transformation of heavy metal speciation is unknown. Here, a long-term (2004–2016) field experiment was conducted to assess the responses of different heavy metal speciation in three soil aggregate fractions to N additions in a temperate agroecosystem of North China. The organic matter turnover time was quantified based on changes in δ13C following the conversion from C3 (wheat) to C4 crop (corn). Averagely, N addition decreases and increases the heavy metal contents in bioavailable and organic bound fractions by 27.5% and 16.6%, respectively, suggesting N addition promotes the transformation of heavy metal speciation from bioavailable to organic bound, and such a promotion in a small aggregate fraction is more remarkable than that in a large aggregate fraction. The transformations of heavy metal speciation from bioavailable to organic bound in all soil aggregate fractions are largely dependent on the increments in the turnover time of organic matter. The increase in organic matter turnover time induced by N addition may inhibit the desorption of heavy metals from organic matter by prolonging the interaction time between heavy metals and organic matter and enhance the capacity of organic matter to adsorb heavy metals by increasing the humification degree and functional group. Our work can provide insights into the accumulation, migration, and transformation of heavy metals in soils in the context of increasing global soil N input from a microenvironmental perspective.

Swine waste is a reservoir of microbial pollutants, including pathogens, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB); therefore, soil fertilized with swine waste is an essential pathway for the dissemination of microbial pollutants from concentrated swine farms to the public. To rationalize the intervals of swine wastes application and investigate the effects of soil type on the occurrences of microbial pollutants and antibiotic resistance, pot experiments were conducted with three typical soils, humic acrisol, calcaric cambisols and histosols, being collected from south, northwest and northeast China (soil-R, soil-Y and soil-B, respectively). The soils were amended with swine slurry, digestate and chemical fertilizers and then conducted for 172 days. The influence of microbial pollutants and antibiotic resistance in soil posed by digestate application was similar to that of the chemical fertilizers, while swine slurry posed high risks to the soil. Soil-B which had the highest organic matter and neutral pH was least influenced by the swine slurry amendment. tetG, tetM and ermF were persistent ARGs in the slurry treated soil, and their decay rates fitted to first-order kinetics in the order soil-B> soil-Y > soil-R. Putative pathogens showed strong correlations with ARGs, suggesting a risk of dissemination. The initial 43–82 days was the active phase of microbial pollution in slurry treated soil, during which time heavy metals, moisture content, total organic carbon and the microbial community were key factors contributing to changes in antibiotic resistance. Fertilization intervals of livestock wastes should be lengthened over the ARG active phase.

Fish-associated antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have attracted increasing attention due to their potential risks to human beings via the food chain. However, data are scarce regarding the antibiotic resistance in fish themselves. Herein, the antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were assessed in the gut of four major Chinese freshwater carp (i.e., silver carp, grass carp, bighead carp, and crucian carp) from food retail markets. Results show that the abundances of target ARGs (e.g., tetA, tetO, tetQ, tetW, sulI, sulII, and blaTEM₋₁) and class 1 integrase (intI1) were in the range 9.4 × 10⁻⁶ - 1.6 × 10⁻¹ and 6.7 × 10⁻⁵ - 5.2 × 10⁻² gene copies per 16S rRNA gene, respectively. The sulI, sulII, and tetQ strongly correlated with silver and mercury resistance genes (e.g., silE and merR). The microbial taxa of fish gut could be partly separated among retail markets based on the PCA analysis. About 15.0% of the OTUs in fish gut were shared and 74.5% of the shared OTUs were identified as Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi, Cyanobacteria, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria. These phyla may constitute the core microbiota in the guts of the four Chinese freshwater carp. The possible ARG hosts were revealed based on the network analysis, and the presence of pathogen-associated resistant genera in fish gut highlights the need to fully understand their potential human health risks.

Land degradation by salinization and sodification changes soil function, destroys soil health, and promotes bioaccumulation of heavy metals in plants, but little is known about their fundamental mechanisms in shaping microbial communities and regulating microbial interactions. In this study, we explored the impact of saline-alkaline (SA) stress on soil bacterial and fungal community structures in different Cd-contaminated soils of Dezhou, Baoding, Xinxiang, Beijing and Shenyang cities from the North China Plain, China. Increased soil salinity and alkalinity enhanced Cd availability, indicated by significant increases in available Cd2+ in soil solution of 34.1%–49.7%, soil extractable Cd of 32.0–51.6% and wheat root Cd concentration of 24.5%–40.2%, as well as decreased activities of antioxidative enzymes of wheat root when compared with CK (no extra neutral or alkaline salts added). Soil bacteria were more active in response to the SA stress than fungi, as the significant structural reorganization of soil bacterial microbiota rather than fungal microbiota between SA and CK treatments was illustrated by principal component analysis. Adding neutral and alkaline salts enriched oligotrophic and haloalkaliphilic taxa in the Sphingobacteriaceae, Cellvibrionaceae, and Caulobacteraceae bacterial families, but decreased some Acidobacteria such as subgroup 6_norank, which was a sensitive biomarker that responded only to Cd contamination in CK-treated soils. Conversely, fungi were more sensitive to soil differences than bacteria: the composition of the fungal community was significantly different among different soil types. Phylogenetic molecular ecological network (pMEN) analysis further indicated that the microbial community structure and network interactions were altered to strengthen the adaptability of microorganisms to SA stress; the changes in structure and network interactions were proposed to contribute to competitive interactions. Most of the keystone genera identified in SA-treated soils, such as Blastococcus, Gemmatimonas, RB41, or Candida, had relatively low abundances (<1%), indicating their disproportionate ecological roles in triggering resistance or tolerance to SA stress and Cd toxicity.

Proper management of waste crop residues has been an environmental concern for years. Yellow mealworms (larvae of Tenebrio molitor Linnaeus, 1758) are major insect protein source. In comparison with normal feed wheat bran (WB), we tested five common lignocellulose-rich crop residues as feedstock to rear mealworms, including wheat straw (WS), rice straw (RS), rice bran (RB), rice husk (RH), and corn straw (CS). We then used egested frass for the production of biochar in order to achieve clean production. Except for WS and RH, the crop residues supported mealworms’ life activity and growth with consumption of the residues by 90% or higher and degraded lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose over 32 day period. The sequence of degradability of the feedstocks is RS > RB > CS > WS > RH. Egested frass was converted to biochar which was tested for metal removal including Pb(II), Cd(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Cr(VI). Biochar via pyrolysis at 600 °C from RS fed frass (FRSBC) showed the best adsorption performance. The adsorption isotherm fits the Langmuir model, and kinetic analysis fits the Pseudo-Second Order Reaction. The heavy metal adsorption process was well-described using the Intra-Particle Diffusion model. Complexation, cation exchange, precipitation, reduction, deposition, and chelation dominated the adsorption of the metals onto FRSBC. The results indicated that crop residues (WS, RS, RB, and CS) can be utilized as supplementary feedstock along with biochar generated from egested frass to rear mealworms and achieve clean production while generating high-quality bioadsorbent for environment remediation and soil conditioning.

A biofilm reactor was designed with flat ceramic substrates to remove Co(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) from industrial wastewater. The ceramics were made of clay and nano-rubber with high mechanical resistance. The surface of the ceramic substrate was modified with neutral fiber and nano-hydroxyapatite. A uniform and stable biofilm mass of 320 g with 2 mm of thickness was produced on the modified ceramic after 3 d. The micro-organisms were identified in the biofilm by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. Functional groups of biofilms were identified with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR). Experiments were designed by central composite design (CCD) using the responsive surface method (RSM). The biosorption process was optimized at pH = 5.8, temperature = 22 °C, feed flux of heavy metal wastewater = 225 ml, substrate flow = 30 ml, and retention time = 7.825 h. The kinetic data was analyzed by pseudo first-order and pseudo second-order kinetic models. Isotherm models and thermodynamic parameters were applied to describe the biosorption equilibrium data of the metal ions on the biofilm-ceramic. The maximum biosorption efficiency and capacity of heavy metal ions were about 72% and 57.21 mg, respectively.

As a useful heavy metal ion, chromium has seen its applications in various fields. While it is also a toxic contaminant in water and may cause serious threats to the environment and human health. To develop a novel material with good adsorption capacity and easy solid-liquid separation strategy was necessary and significant. In this paper, the β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) functionalized three-dimensional structured graphene foam (CDGF) was successfully synthesized with the facile and one-step hydrothermal method. The SEM, BET, XRD, FT-IR and XPS analysis were carried out and the results confirmed the successfully grafting of β-CD onto GF. The batch adsorption of Cr(VI) was also taken out and the CDGF possessed good selectivity compared with other metal ions at pH = 3. The adsorption capacity reduced gradually as the initial pH of the Cr(VI) solution grew higher, which was because the anionic species of Cr(VI) were partial to the positively charged surface of CDGF. The easy separation strategy of the CDGF was also demonstrated and the CDGF could be taken out easily with a tweezer after the adsorption of Cr(VI), which significantly simplified the separation procedure and reduced time. By comparing the FT-IR and XPD analysis results, the adsorption mechanism was explored and the hydroxyl groups on CDGF played the main role in the adsorption process. This work brings a novel material for the adsorption of Cr(VI) from water and provides an innovative direction for the easy and fast solid-liquid separation strategy in the adsorption and other application fields.

The binding of metal ions with humic acid (HA) plays an important role in the aggregation of HA and the migration of metal ions in the environments. The effects of common cations (Na⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺ and Al³⁺) and heavy metal ions (Ag⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺, Cr³⁺ and Eu³⁺) on the aggregation of HA were investigated systematically by aggregation kinetics, spectroscopic techniques and molecular dynamic (MD) simulations. The critical coagulation concentration (CCC) of mono-, di- and trivalent cations could be predicted by the Schulze-Hardy rule. The aggregation of HA in the presence of Na⁺ and Ag⁺ was mainly due to the reduction of repulsive force and the hydrogen bonds between HA molecules. While the complexation of di- and trivalent cations with carboxylic/phenolic groups, or the cation-π interactions enhanced the intra- or inter-molecular bridges in HA and then contributed greatly to the aggregation of HA. Heavy metal ions could easily pass through the electric double-layer of HA compared with common cations. MD simulations further signified the strong aggregation ability of HA molecules in solutions containing high valence metal ions. These findings are important for understanding not only how the influence of metal ions on the aggregation of HA, but also the conditions which ions more efficient for aggregation.
