Consequences of sodium dodecyl sulfate exposure on the antioxidant status and steroidogenesis in fish gonad

A native Indian catfish (Heteropneustes fossilis) and an Indian major carp (Cirrhinus cirrhosus) were treated with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) to elucidate its consequences on antioxidant status and sex steroid synthesis. Fishes were exposed to 1/10th of LC₅₀ of SDS for 30 days. Different enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, major sex steroids, steroidogenic enzymes, gonadosomatic index (GSI), and serum cortisol level were measured in both male and female fishes. Levels of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants altered significantly in both the fish species. Steroid hormones in both male and female fishes decreased significantly in the SDS-treated group. Profiles of steroidogenic enzymes (hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase; 3β-HSD and 17β-HSD) show significant decrease in the SDS treatment group in both carp and catfish than that of the control group irrespective of sexes. GSI also decreases significantly in the SDS-treated group when compared with the control group in spawning phase of carp and catfish irrespective of sexes. Serum cortisol level was increased significantly after SDS exposure. Higher level of cortisol was noted in the spawning phase than that of pre-spawning phase. Current study proves that SDS could interrupt the normal steroidogenesis process in fish, leading to impaired sex hormone production. Detrimental effect of SDS was noted to be more prominent on female steroidogenesis than that of male fish. A species or season-specific variation in steroidogenesis was also observed which indicates that SDS-induced toxicity depends on the sexual status of the specific fish species.

The present study has been conducted to evaluate the potential threat of NiO nanoparticles (NiO NPs) on an edible fish Heteropneustes fossilis. Fishes selected for the study were exposed to four concentrations of NiO NPs (12, 24, 36 and 48 mg/l) for the period of 14 days, and various haematological, biochemical and enzymological changes in the exposed fishes were examined. Results revealed that maximum fluctuations were seen in 48-mg/l-exposed fishes when compared with the control in terms of the haematological parameters (RBC count, WBC count, Hb content, Ht% and O₂ carrying capacity of blood), enzymatic activities (AST, ALP, ALT and LDH) and biochemical parameters (level of cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, total protein, albumin, globulin, bilirubin and creatinine). However, 12 mg/l treatment to the fishes showed its least impact on aforesaid parameters. Furthermore, Ni accumulation and changes in cortisol level in the blood were also noticed in all the treated fishes. Structural changes, such as membrane and nuclear disintegration, micronucleus, deformed and vacuolated cells, and enucleation were also observed in RBCs of NiO NP–treated fishes. Conclusively, our study provides useful information and insight for the possible ecotoxicity of NiO NPs on aquatic organisms and emphasizes upon the importance of treatment of effluents containing nanoparticles before their release into the aquatic system.

Extensive industrialization and urbanization have introduced domestic as well as industrial wastes into aquatic ecosystems.Dueto lack of proper treatment and improper mode of disposal, the water bodies have become more polluted with toxic substancesand their adverse effects including mortality to aquatic organisms, are becoming more prominent.In recent years, much attention has been paid to the possible danger of metal poisoning in humans as a result of consumption of contaminated fishes.Vanadium is a rare elementfound combined with certain minerals and mainly from the production of certain alloys used in jet engines. Humans may be exposed to excessive vanadium and may develop adverse vascular effects.In the present investigation, efforts have been made to investigate the effect of sublethal concentration of vanadium (6.5 ppm; 10% of 96h LC50) on the bioaccumulation in gill, liver and skin of the catfish Heteropneustes fossilis for 60 days. The pattern of bioaccumulation was in the order liver > gill > skin. Theresults suggest that the organ-specific variation is directly related to the structural and functional change, proximity to the toxicant and presence of ligands having high affinity to vanadium.

Reproduction plays an important role in fish population efficiency and its resiliency to fishing and environment changes. The present study described the comprehensive information on reproductive feature of stinging catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch 1794), including size at sexual maturity, spawning season, and fecundity using 622 female individuals sampling by the use of gill net, cast net, and square lift net from January to December 2019 in the Ganges River. We calculated the influences of various environmental parameters which include temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and rainfall on the reproductive feature of H. fossilis in the Ganges River. For every specimen, total length (TL), standard length (SL), and body weight (BW) were estimated by measuring board and electronic weighing scale. With ventral dissection of fishes, female gonads were cautiously removed and measured to 0.01 g precision. The gonadosomatic index (GSI), modified gonadosomatic index (MGSI), and Dobriyal index (DI) were used to assess the size at sexual maturity (Lₘ) and spawning season. According to the results of these indices, Lₘ was obtained 15.5 cm in TL. Also, TL₅₀ was determined through logistic function as 15.5 cm in TL. Moreover, the highest GSI, MGSI, and DI values indicated the spawning season as of March–August, with peak in May–June. Total fecundity (FT) varied from 2059 to 59,984 with a mean of 25,028 ± 15,048. Temperature and rainfall was statistically correlated with GSI. In addition, long climatic data series analysis denoted that yearly mean atmospheric temperature is rising in 0.028 °C/year and yearly mean rainfall is declining in 2.98 mm/year which may suggest a potential shift of the spawning period of the species in the future if this trend persists. The results of our study might be more useful in imposing particular management and conservation for H. fossilis in the Ganges River and the surroundings.
