To assess the potential for nutritional exploitation of caged-fish-derived waste through the use of extractive co-cultured species in a pilot system for an integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA), we compared their C and N stable isotope ratios with those of uncultured macroinvertebrates in and around the system. Black rockfish were co-cultured with sea cucumber, oyster, and two macroalgae as extractive species. Isotope signatures of the co-cultured sea cucumber at the IMTA site differed from those at the control site, indicating their assimilation of aquaculture wastes. In contrast, δ13C and δ15N of individual taxa of the cultured oyster and uncultured invertebrates were consistent between sites, suggesting a minor contribution of the aquaculture waste to benthic and pelagic food chains in and around the IMTA system. These results provide evidence of the suitability of using sea cucumber as an extractive species to reduce the impact of a monoculture system on the ambient environment.
Show more [+] Less [-]Watershed discharge patterns, secondary consumer abundances, and seagrass habitat condition in Yap, Micronesia
2013
Watershed discharge, water quality, and seagrass assemblages were examined along the western coast of Yap Proper, Micronesia. Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) during low tides associated with new and full moons contributed disproportionally to freshwater delivery where compromised Thalassia habitats existed. Despite SGD influence, nutrient sampling indicated that one characteristic regime may be a net import of new nitrogen and phosphorous (NO3 and PO4) from offshore to inshore waters, agreeing with sparse watershed development. Biologically recycled nitrogen (NH4), however, was highest where SGD contribution was largest. Time-and-tide-limited sampling likely precluded generalized relationships between SGD and NH4 across the entire study area, however, spatial profiling of SGD during low-tide events (i.e., a proxy to nutrient input) was strongly associated with seagrass habitat condition (defined within). Concomitantly, sea cucumber densities were over a magnitude of order lower than in regionally comparable Thalassia habitats, and negatively correlated with seagrass condition. Both top-down and bottom-up considerations are discussed.

Microplastic pollution is an increasing problem in the marine environment. This study had three objectives: 1) determine if seagrass beds and adjacent sand flats in the Florida Keys differed in microplastics concentration, 2) determine if sea cucumbers from the Florida Keys and sand dollars from the panhandle of Florida contain microplastics, and 3) conduct a laboratory experiment on the sand dollar Mellita tenuis to determine if it will ingest plastic microbeads contained in sediment. Both seagrass beds and sand flats in the Florida Keys contained microplastics. Sediment near Pensacola Beach and in St. Joseph Bay contained microplastics. Sea cucumbers from the Florida Keys and sand dollars from the panhandle of Florida contained microplastics in their gut contents. In the laboratory, M. tenuis ingested microbeads in slightly lower proportions compared to surrounding sediment. Both sea cucumbers and sand dollars may make useful animals for monitoring sandy environments for microplastics pollution.

The Weihai coast is a representative zone with fifty-year history of mariculture in China. Algae and shellfish are the main cultured species, other species including fish and sea cucumber are also cultivated. In this study, heavy metals in surface sediments, sampled along the Weihai coast during May yearly between 2009 and 2013 were investigated in terms of their contents and spatiotemporal variation. The contents of Zn, Cr, Cu, Cd, Pb and As showed different spatiotemporal variations and ranged between 11.6 and 115.9, 4.15–51.3, 5.2–21.9, 0.02–0.33, 6.0–54.2, and 2.9–18.7μgg−1, respectively. Among them, Zn, Cu and As declined during the five years. Ecological risk assessment revealed that Cd posed a moderate risk, as compared to other five elements, which were relatively low risks in surface sediments. Source analysis revealed that Zn, Cr and Cd were mainly from lithogenic contribution, while As was likely from anthropogenic discharges.
Show more [+] Less [-]PAH and PCB body-burdens in epibenthic deep-sea invertebrates from the northern Gulf of Mexico

Lawson, M Chase | Cullen, Joshua A. | Nunnally, Clifton C. | Rowe, Gilbert T. | Hala, David N.
There is a paucity of information on the levels of PAHs and PCBs in the deep-sea (≥200 m). In this study, the body-burdens of 16 PAHs and 29 PCBs were measured in: Actinaria (sea anemones), Holothuroidea (sea cucumber), Pennatulacea (sea pens), and Crinoidea (sea lilies) in the deep Gulf of Mexico. All epibenthic species were collected at depths of approximately 2000 m. The PAH and PCB congener profile displayed a similar pattern of bioaccumulation across all four taxa. The high molecular weight PAH, dibenz[a,h]anthracene, was the most abundant PAH in all organisms, ranging from 36 to 53% of sum total PAHs. PCBs 101 and 138 exhibited the highest levels at 20–25% of total congener concentrations in all taxa. The exposure to PAHs and PCBs is likely attributed to contaminated particulate organic matter that is consumed by the deposit and filter feeding epibenthic megafauna sampled in this study.

Finfish cage culture is the most predominant form of mariculture. The rapid expansion of fish cage culture systems has raised concerns about their environmental impact, such as nutrient release. In this study, for the first time, we estimated the release of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from fish cage culture in Daya Bay, southern China, by constructing N and P budget models based on a mass balance principle. In addition, the contribution and importance of nutrients from fish culture and other nutrient sources, including submarine groundwater discharge, benthic sediments, local rivers, and atmospheric deposition were assessed. The annual amount of N and P released from fish cage culture was 205.6 metric tons (hereafter tons) of N and 39.2 tons of P, including 142.7 tons of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and 15.1 tons of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP). Among the analyzed nutrient sources, the contributions of DIN and DIP from fish culture were 7.0% and 2.7%, respectively. For cages consuming conventional trash fish, 142 kg of N and 26 kg of P were released into the environment per ton of fish products, much higher than the values (72 kg N and 17.3 kg P) for cages using formulated feed. In fish culture, the dissolved nutrients were more N rich, but the particulate nutrients were more P rich. The ratio of cage-derived N and P was 21.1, higher than the ratio of coastal seawater (27.1), indicating that cage culture may also impact the local nutrient forms around farming regions. Oyster cultivation and harvest removed 126.3 tons of N and 35.1 tons of P from of the bay. Replacing trash fish with formulated feed and co-culturing of nutrient extractive species (e.g., bivalves, macroalgae) and deposit-feeding species (e.g., sea cucumber) in fish culture zones can be efficient nutrient mitigation strategies.
Show more [+] Less [-]Tropical sea cucumber fisheries: Changes during the last decade

Conand, C.
Tropical sea cucumber fisheries are generally traditional, small-scale, multispecies and poorly managed. Many recent studies have improved our knowledge on the biology and ecology of the commercially important species; the main results are analysed and the remaining gaps discussed. The fisheries and the patterns of trade changes during the last decade are presented from the data available and confirm overexploitation in the traditional Indian Ocean and West Pacific countries and territories. Several Latino-American countries now have active fisheries. Despite the management and conservation issues which have recently received more attention at international, regional and national levels, more measures are still needed at all these levels, to ensure sustainable exploitations of these resources.

Zhang, Junbo | Kitazawa, Daisuke
With increasing concern over the aquatic environment in marine culture, the integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) has received extensive attention in recent years. A three-dimensional numerical ocean model is developed to explore the negative impacts of aquaculture wastes and assess the bio-mitigation effect of IMTA systems on marine environments. Numerical results showed that the concentration of surface phytoplankton could be controlled by planting seaweed (a maximum reduction of 30%), and the percentage change in the improvement of bottom dissolved oxygen concentration increased to 35% at maximum due to the ingestion of organic wastes by sea cucumbers. Numerical simulations indicate that seaweeds need to be harvested in a timely manner for maximal absorption of nutrients, and the initial stocking density of sea cucumbers >3.9 individuals m−2 is preferred to further eliminate the organic wastes sinking down to the sea bottom.

Occurrence and distribution of 24 antibiotics from 7 categories were screened in sea cucumbers (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea) collected from different coastal regions of China. The samples were simultaneously extracted and purified using accelerated solvent extraction with in-cell clean-up and analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. A total of ten antibiotics were detected in the sea cucumbers with concentrations ranging from not detected to 32.8 μg/kg (dry weight). Sulfonamides are predominant antibiotics with a mean concentration of 11.5 μg/kg (dry weight), followed by macrolides (11.3 μg/kg, dry weight) and fluoroquinolones (11.2 μg/kg, dry weight). High concentrations of the antibiotics were found in the samples from the South China Sea, implying that the antibiotic pollution in sea cucumbers was geographical region-dependent, which was further confirmed by principal component analysis. It was also found that the antibiotic levels are slightly higher in instant sea cucumbers than in the dried ones. Hazard quotient calculation suggested no obvious human health risks associated with the consumption of sea cucumbers regarding antibiotics.
Show more [+] Less [-]The impact of mariculture on nutrient dynamics and identification of the nitrate sources in coastal waters

Reclamation along coastal zones is a method that has been used to relieve the problems of strained resources and land. Aquaculture, as one of the major man-made activities in reclamation areas, has an environmental impact on coastal waters. The effluents from aquaculture ponds are known to enrich the levels of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphate. The goals of the present study are to evaluate the environmental impact of mariculture on coastal waters in the east coast of Laizhou Bay, China, and to identify the nitrate sources. Monitoring the concentrations of dissolved nitrogen and phosphate was used to assess their impact on the water quality of coastal waters. A dual isotope (δ¹⁵N-NO₃ ⁻ and δ¹⁸O-NO₃ ⁻) approach was used to identify the nitrate sources. Higher dissolved nitrogen concentrations (NH₄ ⁺ and NO₃ ⁻) than PO₄ ³⁻ concentrations associated with enriched δ¹⁵N-NO₃ ⁻ values were observed in the drainage channels, sea cucumber ponds, and groundwater, which indicated that aquaculture activity has more influence on nitrogen nutrients than on phosphate nutrients. In this coastal area with seawater intrusion, nitrogen released from sea cucumber ponds accumulated in nearshore water and migrated in the offshore direction in groundwater currents. This behavior results in nitrogen enrichment in groundwater within the hinterland. Isotopic data indicate that mixing of multiple nitrate sources exists in groundwater, and nitrogen from mariculture is the main source.
