Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that have adverse effects on human health. However, the long-term health effects and potential mechanism of neonatal exposure to PCBs are still unclear. In this study, nursing male mice exposed to PCB138 at 0.5, 5, and 50 μg/kg body weight (bw) from postnatal day (PND) 3 to PND 21 exhibited increased serum uric acid levels and liver uric acid synthase activity at 210 days of age. We also found an increased kidney somatic index in the 50 μg/kg group and kidney fibrosis in the 5 and 50 μg/kg groups. Mechanistically, PCB138 induced mitochondrial dysfunction and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, which might have led to inflammatory responses, such as activation of the NF-κB (nuclear factor kappa-B) and NLRP3 (NOD-like receptor protein 3) pathways. The inflammatory response might regulate renal fibrosis and hypertrophy. In summary, this study reports a long-term effect of neonatal PCB exposure on uric acid metabolism and secondary nephrotoxicity and clarifies the underlying mechanism. Our work also indicates that early life pollutant exposure may be an important cause of diseases later in life.

Arsenic (As) toxicity is a problem that needs to be solved in terms of both human health and agricultural production in the vast majority of the world. The presence of As causes biomass loss by disrupting the balance of biochemical processes in plants and preventing growth/water absorption in the roots and accumulating in the edible parts of the plant and entering the food chain. A critical method of combating As toxicity is the use of biosafe, natural, bioactive compounds such as hesperidin (HP) or chlorogenic acid (CA). To this end, in this study, the physiological and biochemical effects of HP (100 μM) and CA (50 μM) were investigated in Zea mays under arsenate stress (100 μM). Relative water content, osmotic potential, photosynthesis-related parameters were suppressed under stress. It was determined that stress decreased the activities of the antioxidant system and increased the level of saturated fatty acids and, gene expression of PHT transporters involved in the uptake and translocation of arsenate. After being exposed to stress, HP and CA improved the capacity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and then ROS accumulation (H₂O₂) and lipid peroxidation (TBARS) were effectively removed. These phenolic compounds contributed to maintaining the cellular redox status by regulating enzyme/non-enzyme activity/contents involved in the AsA-GSH cycle. HP and CA reversed the adverse effects of excessive metal ion accumulation by re-regulated expression of the PHT1.1 and PHT1.3 genes in response to stress. Exogenously applied HP and CA effectively maintained membrane integrity by regulating saturated/unsaturated fatty acid content. However, the combined application of HP and CA did not show a synergistic protective activity against As stress and had a negative effect on the antioxidant capacity of maize leaves. As a result, HP and CA have great potentials to provide tolerance to maize under As stress by reducing oxidative injury and preserving the biochemical reactions of photosynthesis.

Soil contamination by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is one of the greatest threats to environmental degradation. Knowing where PTEs accumulated in soil can mitigate their adverse effects on plants, animals, and human health. We evaluated the potential of using long-term remote sensing images that reveal the bare soils, to detect and map PTEs in agricultural fields. In this study, 360 soil samples were collected at the superficial layer (0–20 cm) in a 2574 km² agricultural area located in São Paulo State, Brazil. We tested the Soil Synthetic Image (SYSI) using Landsat TM/ETM/ETM+, Landsat OLI, and Sentinel 2 images. The three products have different spectral, temporal, and spatial resolutions. The time series multispectral images were used to reveal areas with bare soil and their spectra were used as predictors of soil chromium, iron, nickel, and zinc contents. We observed a strong linear relationship (−0.26 > r > −0.62) between the selected PTEs and the near infrared (NIR) and shortwave infrared (SWIR) bands of Sentinel (ensemble of 4 years of data), Landsat TM (35 years data), and Landsat OLI (4 years data). The clearest discrimination of soil PTEs was obtained from SYSI using a long term Landsat 5 collection over 35 years. Satellite data could efficiently detect the contents of PTEs in soils due to their relation with soil attributes and parent materials. Therefore, distinct satellite sensors could map the PTEs on tropics and assist in understanding their spatial dynamics and environmental effects.

The high antibiotic resistance gene (ARGs) contents in livestock manure pose a potential risk to environment and human health. The heap composting with an ambient temperature and thermophilic composting are two methods for converting livestock manure into fertilizer. This study investigated the variations in ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and revealed potential mechanisms for ARGs removal using the two composting methods. The ARGs abundance were enriched by 44-fold in heap composting, among them, the macrolide-resistance genes increased significantly. On the contrary, the ARGs were removed by 92% in thermophilic composting, among them, tetracycline-resistance genes decreased by 97%. The bacterial hosts of ARGs were associated with the variations of ARGs and MGEs. The tetO was correlated with the most diverse bacteria in heap composting, and Bacteroidetes was the major host bacteria. While tetT was correlated with the most diverse bacteria in thermophilic composting, and Proteobacteria was the major host bacteria. Structural equation models showed that the enrichment of ARGs in heap composting was mainly correlated with bacterial communities, whereas, the removal of ARGs in thermophilic composting was directly affect by MGEs. Composting temperature directly affected the variations in ARGs. Higher and lower temperatures significantly decreased and increased, respectively, ARGs and MGEs abundance levels.

Air pollution and extreme heat have been responsible for more than a million deaths in China every year, especially in densely urbanized regions. While previous studies intensively evaluated air pollution episodes and extreme heat events, a limited number of studies comprehensively assessed atmospheric hot-and-polluted-episodes (HPE) – an episode with simultaneously high levels of air pollution and temperature – which have potential adverse synergic impacts on human health. This study focused on the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of China due to its high temperature in summer and poor air quality throughout a year. We employed geostatistical downscaling to model meteorology at a spatial resolution of 1 km, and applied a machine learning algorithm (XGBoost) to estimate a high-resolution (1 km) daily concentration of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM₂.₅) and ozone (O₃) for June to October over 20 years (2000–2019). Our results indicate an increasing trend (∼50%) in the frequency of HPE occurrence in the first decade (2000–2010). Conversely, the annual frequency of HPE occurrence reduced (16.7%), but its intensity increased during the second decade (2010–2019). The northern cities in the PRD region had higher levels of PM₂.₅ and O₃ than their southern counterparts. During HPEs, regional daily PM₂.₅ exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) and Chinese guideline levels by 75% and 25%, respectively, while the O₃ exceeded the WHO O₃ standard by up to 69%. Overall, 567,063 (95% confidence interval (CI): 510,357–623,770) and 52,231 (95%CI: 26,116–78,346) excessive deaths were respectively attributable to exposure to PM₂.₅ and O₃ in the PRD region. Our findings imply the necessity and urgency to formulate co-benefit policies to mitigate the region's air pollution and heat problems.

Free refill drinking water kiosks are an essential sustainable water supply system for people in metropolitan areas worldwide. Despite their importance in urban settings, the impact of microplastic contamination remains elusive. Here, we investigated the occurrence and characteristics of microplastics in drinking-water samples collected from 22 self-distributed refill kiosks located in 14 multiuse urban parks spread across nine municipalities in Mexico City (Mexico). The results showed that microplastics were detected in all the samples, with an overall mean concentration of 74.18 ± 48.76 microplastics L⁻¹. The abundance of microplastics was significantly different between sampled kiosks, ranging from 23 ± 11.31 to 202 ± 28.39 microplastics L⁻¹. There were more fibrous microplastics (88%) than fragments (9%) and films (3%), with the majority (56%) being <200 μm in length. They were predominantly transparent (85%), with only a few being colored (15%; blue, red, green, and brown). Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy further revealed microplastics of various polymer types, including polyvinyl alcohol, high-density polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl acetate, ethylene vinyl alcohol, acrylic, alkyd resin, and viscose. Based on our findings, drinking water from urban refill kiosks exposes children more than adults to microplastics. Furthermore, the steps that should be taken at urban refill kiosks to prevent microplastic pollution while offering recreational services to people have been highlighted. Therefore, this first study serves as a wake-up call to urban water management to improve the safety of water from emerging pollutants like microplastics in the infrastructure of refill kiosks.

The environmental behavior of microplastics (MPs) in estuaries with saline and freshwater intersections is extremely complex. This increases the chance of MP ingestion by fishery resources, posing potentially tremendous health risks for humans. Herein, a total of 105 fishes from 14 different species, and 86 crustaceans (including shrimps and crabs) from five different species were sampled in the Yangtze River estuary and offshore, and MP bioaccumulation, accumulative organ, and the influencing factors were comprehensively studied. The results elucidated that MP accumulation in benthos was significantly higher than that in pelagic animals due to the lower acceptance threshold, assimilation efficiency and egestion rate for benthos. The MP content in crustaceans with the burrowing favoring the MP retention was significantly higher than that in fishes. MPs ingested by fish can accumulate in skin, gills and viscera rather than muscles. Most MPs accumulated in fishery resources were cellulose and polyethylene terephthalate characterized by black and gray fibrous and lengths ranging from 0.1 mm to 1 mm. The gill retention capacity of pelagic fish to smaller-size (<0.1 mm) MPs was pronouncedly stronger than that of benthic fish. It was more accurate to assess the ecological risk of MPs in terms of the maximum size of MPs accumulated in organisms. Compared with the offshore area, the incidence of MP uptake was higher in the estuary owing to anthropogenic impacts. This study helps understand the transfer of MPs in aquatic food webs and offers a foundation for assessing the risk of human exposure to MPs.

To better evaluate the potential risks of aquatic polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), multiple approaches have been implemented in this study to assess the human health and ecological risks of parent, nitrated and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, NPAHs and OPAHs) in the surface water of Jialing and Yangtze Rivers in downtown Chongqing in southwestern China. The concentrations of ∑PAHs (334 ± 125 ng L⁻¹) were much higher than those of ∑OPAHs (20.2 ± 7.49 ng L⁻¹) in the two rivers, while NPAHs were barely detected. Concentrations of detected PACs were higher in wet season than dry season, probably resulted from the elevated particle input due to heavy rainfall in wet season. Concentrations of PAHs were higher in the particulate phase than dissolved phase, while OPAHs levels showed a reverse pattern. The partition coefficients (Kₚ) of PACs in the water-SPM (suspended particulate matter) system were mainly affected by SPM concentrations and octanol/water partition coefficients of specific PACs. Human health risks calculated from non-probabilistic risk assessment model and probabilistic risk assessment model based on Monte Carlo simulation showed similar data pattern with slight difference in absolute values. Both models revealed potential or even severe human health risks contributed mainly by dermal exposure to aquatic PACs in this study. Furthermore, these models also manifested that infant stage was highly sensitive for PAC exposure. Sensitivity analysis indicated that health risk results was most sensitive to Benzo[a]pyrene equivalent toxic concentration (BaPₑq), followed by showering time and daily water intake volume. Levels of ecological risks and contributions of individual PACs differed from models based on different quality values. The adequacy of toxicity data was crucial for the reliability of ecological risk assessment.

Halogenated organic compounds are persistent pollutants, whose persistent contamination and rapid spread seriously threaten human health and the safety of ecosystems. It is difficult to remove them completely by traditional physicochemical techniques. In-situ remediation utilizing bioelectrochemical technology represents a promising strategy for degradation of halogenated organic compounds, which can be achieved through potential modulation. In this review, we summarize the reactor configuration of microbial electrochemical dehalogenation systems and relevant organohalide-respiring bacteria. We also highlight the mechanisms of electrode potential regulation of microbial dehalogenation and the role of extracellular electron transfer in dehalogenation process, and further discuss the application of bioelectrochemical technology in bioremediation of halogenated organic compounds. Therefore, this review summarizes the status of research on microbial electrochemical dehalogenation systems from macroscopic to microscopic levels, providing theoretical support for the development of rapid and efficient in situ bioremediation technologies for halogenated organic compounds contaminated sites, as well as insights for the removal of refractory fluorides.

Irrational use of antibiotics produces a large number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) act as important sources and sinks of ARGs, and play an important role in their generation, treatment, and dissemination. This study summarizes the types, concentrations, and factors of ARGs in WWTPs, investigates the sources of ARGs in wastewater, compares the removal efficiencies of different treatment processes on ARGs, and analyzes the potential risks of ARGs accumulation in effluent, sludge and their emission into the air. The results show that the main ARGs detected in the influent of WWTPs are the genes resistant to macrolides (ermB, ermF), tetracyclines (tetW, tetA, tetC), sulfonamides (sul1, sul2), and β-lactams (blaOXA, blaTEM). The concentrations of ARGs in the influent of the WWTPs are 2.23 × 10²–3.90 × 10⁹ copies/mL. Wastewater quality and microbial community are the dominant factors that affect the distribution characteristics of ARGs. The accumulation of ARGs in effluent, sludge, and aerosols pose potential risks to the regional ecological environment and human health. Based on these results, research trends with respect to ARGs in WWTPs are also prospected.
