Forest ecosystem has long been suggested as a vital component in the global mercury (Hg) biogeochemical cycling. However, there remains large uncertainties in understanding total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) variations and their controlling factors during the whole hydrological processes in forest ecosystems. Here, we quantified Hg mass flow along hydrological processes of wet deposition, throughfall, stemflow, litter leachate, soil leachate, surface runoff, and stream, and litterfall Hg deposition, and air-forest floor elemental Hg (Hg⁰) exchange flux to set up a Hg mass balance in a subtropical forest of China. Results showed that THg concentration in stream was lower than that in wet deposition, while an opposite characteristic for MeHg concentration, and both THg and MeHg fluxes of stream were lower than those of wet deposition. Variations of THg and MeHg in throughfall and litter leachate had strong direct and indirect effects on controlling variations of THg and MeHg in surface runoff, soil leachate and stream, respectively. Especially, the net Hg methylation was suggested in the forest canopy and forest floor layers, and significant particulate bound Hg (PBM) filtration was observed in soil layers. The Hg mass balance showed that the litterfall Hg deposition was the main Hg input for forest floor Hg, and the elemental Hg vapor (Hg⁰) re-emission from forest floor was the dominant Hg output. Overall, we estimated the net THg input flux of 13.8 μg m⁻² yr⁻¹ and net MeHg input flux of 0.6 μg m⁻² yr⁻¹ within the forest ecosystem. Our results highlighted the important roles of forest canopy and forest floor to shape Hg in output flow, and the forest floor is a distinct sink of MeHg.

Sewage sludge contains Ag₂S-NPs causing NP exposure of soil fauna when sludge is applied as soil amendment. Earthworm bioturbation is an important process affecting many soil functions. Bioturbation may be affected by the presence of Ag₂S-NPs, but the earthworm activity itself may also influence the displacement of these NPs that otherwise show little transport in the soil. The aim of this study was to determine effects of Ag₂S-NPs on earthworm bioturbation and effect of this bioturbation on the vertical distribution of Ag₂S-NPs. Columns (12 cm) of a sandy loamy soil with and without Lumbricus rubellus were prepared with and without 10 mg Ag kg⁻¹, applied as Ag₂S-NPs in the top 2 cm of the soil, while artificial rainwater was applied at ∼1.2 mm day⁻¹. The soil columns were sampled at three depths weekly for 28 days and leachate collected from the bottom. Total Ag measurements showed more displacement of Ag to deeper soil layers in the columns with earthworms. The application of rain only did not significantly affect Ag transport in the soil. No Ag was detected in column leachates. X-ray tomography showed that changes in macro porosity and pore size distribution as a result of bioturbation were not different between columns with and without Ag₂S-NPs. Earthworm activity was therefore not affected by Ag₂S-NPs at the used exposure concentration. Ag concentrations along the columns and the earthworm density allowed the calculation of the bioturbation rate. The effect on the Ag transport in the soil shows that earthworm burrowing activity is a relevant process that must be taken into account when studying the fate of nanoparticles in soils.

Plastic waste is continuously introduced not only into marine, but also freshwater environments, where it fragments into microplastics. Organisms may be affected by the particles themselves due to ingestion and indirectly via incorporated additives such as plasticizers, since these substances have the ability to leach out of the polymer matrix. Although it has been indicated that the likelihood of additives leaching out into the gut lumen of organisms exposed to microplastics is low, studies distinguishing between the effects of the synthetic polymer itself and incorporated additives of the same polymer are scarce. Since this is obligatory for risk assessment, we analyzed the chronic effects of flexible polyvinylchloride (PVC), a widely used polymer, containing the plasticizer diisononylphthalate (DiNP) on morphology and life history of the freshwater crustacean Daphnia magna and compared these effects with the effects of rigid PVC, lacking DiNP, as well as a glass bead control. After up to 31 days of exposure, rigid PVC and glass beads did not affect body length and relative tail spine length of D. magna, whereas flexible PVC led to an increased body length and a reduced number of offspring. None of the treatments increased the mortality significantly. We were able to show that 2.67μg/L DiNP leached out of the flexible PVC into the surrounding medium using GC-MS. Yet, we were not able to measure leachate inside the gut lumen of D. magna. The effects emerged towards the end of the experiment, due to the time dependent process of leaching. Therefore, the results highlight the relevance of long-term chronic exposure experiments, especially as leaching of additives takes time. Further, our study shows the importance to distinguish between microplastics containing leachable additives and the raw polymer in ecotoxicological testing.

A bacterial community was enriched with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) polluted soil to better study PAH degradation by indigenous soil bacteria. The consortium degraded more than 52% of low molecular weight and 35% of high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs during 16 days in a soil leachate medium. 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing and quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses for alpha subunit genes of ring-hydroxylating-dioxygenase (RHDα) suggested that Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria at the phylum level, Pseudomonas, Methylobacillus, Nocardioides, Methylophilaceae, Achromobacter, Pseudoxanthomonas, and Caulobacter at the generic level were involved in PAH degradation and might have the ability to carry RHDα genes (nidA and nahAc). The community was selected and collected according to biomass and RHDα gene contents, and added back to the PAH-polluted soil. The 16 EPA priority PAHs decreased from 95.23 to 23.41 mg kg⁻¹ over 35 days. Compared with soil without the introduction of this bacterial community, adding the community with RHDα genes significantly decreased soil PAH contents, particularly HMW PAHs. The metabolic rate of PAHs in soil was positively correlated with nidA and nahAc gene contents. These results indicate that adding an indigenous bacterial consortium containing RHDα genes to contaminated soil may be a feasible and environmentally friendly method to clean up PAHs in agricultural soil.

Microaerobic and hypoxic methane oxidation coupled to denitrification (MAME-D and HYME-D) occur in stabilized landfills with leachate recirculation when biological denitrification is limited by lack of organics. To evaluate nitrate denitrification efficiency and culture MAME-D/HYME-D involved bacteria, a leach bed bioreactor semi-continuous experiment was conducted for 60 days in 5 runs, under nitrate concentrations ranging of 20 mg/L–55 mg/L, wherein 5% sterile leachate was added during runs 4 and 5. Although the HYME-D system demonstrated high denitrification efficiency (74.93%) and nitrate removal rate reached 2.62 mmol N/(L⋅d), the MAME-D system exhibited a denitrification efficiency of almost 100% and nitrate removal rate of 4.37 mmol N/(L⋅d). The addition of sterile leachate increased the nitrate removal rate in both systems, but caused the decrease of methane consumption in HYME-D. A stable isotope batch experiment was carried out to investigate the metabolic products by monitoring the 13CO2 and 15N2O production. The production of organic intermediates such as citrate, lactic acid, acetate, and propionic acid were also observed, which exhibited a higher yield in HYME-D. Variations in the microbial communities were analyzed during the semi-continuous experiment. MAME-D was mainly conducted by the association of type Ⅰ methanotroph Methylomonas and the methylotrophic denitrifier Methylotenera. Methane fermentation processed by Methylomonas under hypoxic conditions produced more complex organic intermediates and increased the diversity of related heterotrophic denitrifiers. The addition of sterile real leachate, resulting in increase of COD/N, influenced the microbial community of HYME-D system significantly.

Knowledge of the transport and fate of pathogenic Escherichia coli, especially in the areas contaminated with crude oil, is required to assess contamination of shallow groundwater resources. The present study aims to investigate the effect of crude oil-mediated water repellency on the movement of nalidixic acid-resistant Escherichia coli strain (E. coli NAR) and bromide (Br) as an inert tracer in two soil types. The soils were contaminated at three levels of 0, 0.5 and 1% w/w of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) using crude oil. Steady-state saturated flow in the soil columns was controlled using a tension infiltrometer. Leaching experiments were conducted through the columns of repacked (un-weathered) and physically-weathered clay loam (CL) and sandy loam (SL) soils. The columns leachate was sampled at specific times for 4 pore volumes. The shape of breakthrough curves for the E. coli NAR and Br depended on soil texture and structure and the TPHs level. Preferential flow in the crude oil-mediated water-repellent soils facilitated the transport of contaminants especially E. coli NAR. Filtration coefficient and relative adsorption index of bacteria were greatest in the repacked CL soils and were lowest in the weathered SL soils. Discontinuity of soil pores and lower flow velocity resulted in greater filtration of E. coli NAR in the repacked CL soil than other treatments. Physical weathering induced the formation of aggregates which reduced soil particle surfaces available for retention of water-repellent oil and contaminants. Movement of both bacteria and Br tracer in the weathered SL soil with 1% TPHs was higher than other treatments. This finding was attributed to low specific surface area, continuity of the pores and water repellency-mediated preferential pathways in the weathered SL soil columns. Our findings implied that shallow groundwater resources could be very sensitive to microbial contamination particularly in the oil-mediated water-repellent soils.

Leachates from municipal landfills are formed as infiltration waters flowing through the landfill. They contain toxic, dissolved products of biochemical reactions taking place in the deposit. They cause soil and groundwater pollution. It is necessary to take them out of the landfill cover and utilize toxins contained therein, in particular heavy metals. Such processes are conducted with the use of microorganisms. Due to the content of toxic compounds, introducing leachates into the process of biological purification poses a threat to the microorganisms used in these processes.An alternative to microbial co-treatment of sludge and leachate as well as soil contaminated with communal leachate is to use red hybrid of California (Eisenia fetida Sav.), an earthworm resistant to environmental toxins, in particular heavy metals.The aim of the conducted research is to demonstrate the possibility of using red hybrid of California in leachate bioutilization as a complementary or alternative method to the process of leachate utilization with the use of microorganisms.The obtained results led to the conclusion that Eisenia fetida accumulates environmental toxins well. By collecting and processing them in the tissues, it remedies the substrate and retains long life and fertility, and the ability to reproduce. The research demonstrated high dynamics of population growth (from 25 individuals in the initial deposit to 298 individuals after six months of research). These properties are related to the presence of enzyme proteins from the metallothionein group in the gastrointestinal tract cells. Packing heavy metals found in leachates into the metallothionein coat limits their toxic effect on earthworm tissues, which confirms the possibility of using earthworms in the processes of detoxification of municipal leachate.

The effect of different Na concentrations on the fate of trace metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Zn) in standard OECD soil was evaluated by performing soil leaching column experiments. Five Na concentrations added in synthetic irrigation water (0, 1, 5, 10, 50 mM) were studied in order to evaluate the fate of the metals contained in both the irrigation water leachate and the soil layer. In all experiments, metals mostly accumulated on the top soil layer (0–0.5 cm), at variable concentrations according to the Na content in the artificial irrigation water. Nevertheless, concentration peaks of metal contamination occurred at different sampling time in the soil leachates depending on the metal and on influent water sodicity. Peaks of metals in the leachate appeared simultaneously with the release of organic matter and/or release of Al, suggesting significant involvement of colloids in metals transport. Sodium concentration (10–50 mM) was demonstrated to highly reduce colloidal mobilization leading to the accumulation of more than 95% of the influent metal in the top soil layer. Conversely, low Na concentrations (1–5 mM) favored colloidal transport leading to the recovery of metals in the soil leachates.

Microplastics are defined as plastic fragments <5 mm, and they are found in the ocean where they can impact on the ecosystem. Once released in seawater, microplastics can be internalized by organisms due to their small size, moreover they can also leach out several additives used in plastic manufacturing, such as plasticizers, flame retardants, etc., resulting toxic for biota. The aim of this study was to test the toxicity of micronized PVC products with three different colors, upon Paracentrotus lividus embryos. In particular, we assessed the effects of micronized plastics and microplastic leachates. Results showed a decrease of larval length in plutei exposed to low concentrations of micronized plastics, and a block of larval development in sea urchin embryos exposed to the highest dose. Virgin PVC polymer did not result toxic on P. lividus embryos, while an evident toxic effect due to leached substances in the medium was observed. In particular, the exposure to leachates induced a development arrest immediately after fertilization or morphological alterations in plutei. Finally, PVC products with different colors showed different toxicity, probably due to a different content and/or combination of heavy metals present in coloring agents.

Plastic debris in the oceans is a major and growing problem in global environmental pollution. There are increasing concerns that plastic debris is a source of contaminant, either added during manufacturing or adsorbed from the environment. However, there is little information about the acute toxicity of leachates from plastic debris on marine organisms. In this study, we conducted experiments to evaluate the toxicity of leachates from two single-use polyethylene plastic bags (PB1 and PB2) with the embryo and larvae of the commercial clam Meretrix meretrix. Results showed that fertilization of the embryos was not affected by plastic leachates, but the developments of D-veliger larvae, including survival, deformity, and shell height, were significantly affected by plastic leachates from both PB1 and PB2 compared to the controls of filtered seawater. We speculate that compounds leaching from plastic bags are responsible for the observed toxicity. Therefore, leaching toxicity from plastic debris should be considered when assessing the risks of plastic pollution in the oceans.
