It is often assumed that ingestion of microplastics by aquatic species leads to increased exposure to plastic additives. However, experimental data or model based evidence is lacking. Here we assess the potential of leaching of nonylphenol (NP) and bisphenol A (BPA) in the intestinal tracts of Arenicola marina (lugworm) and Gadus morhua (North Sea cod). We use a biodynamic model that allows calculations of the relative contribution of plastic ingestion to total exposure of aquatic species to chemicals residing in the ingested plastic. Uncertainty in the most crucial parameters is accounted for by probabilistic modeling. Our conservative analysis shows that plastic ingestion by the lugworm yields NP and BPA concentrations that stay below the lower ends of global NP and BPA concentration ranges, and therefore are not likely to constitute a relevant exposure pathway. For cod, plastic ingestion appears to be a negligible pathway for exposure to NP and BPA.

We studied the bonding and release kinetics of Cd, Cu and Pb from different soils in the older metropolitan area of Copenhagen. Total Cd, Cu and Pb concentrations were elevated 5–27 times in the urban soils compared to an agricultural reference soil, with Cd and Pb in mainly mobilisable pools and Cu in strongly bound pools. The soils were subjected to accelerated leaching studies in Ca(NO3)2 or HNO3 solutions resulting in release up to 78, 18 and 15% of total Cd, Cu and Pb soil concentrations over a period of 15 weeks. The relative initial Cd and Pb release rates increased 10 fold when pH decreased 2 and 3 units, respectively, while increases in Cu release rates were only seen at pH below 4. The total leachable Cu and Pb pools were higher in urban soils compared the agricultural reference soil but not for Cd.

In the framework of an ecological risk assessment of seaport sediments for terrestrial ecosystems when deposited in quarries, we simulated the “ageing” of sediments exposed to rain. This experiment highlighted an inflection point at the solid/liquid ratio 1/25, after which the extraction of pollutants increases moderately. The raw sediments studied inhibited the germination of Lolium perenne and Armeria maritima (a halophytic species) seeds. Furthermore, they affected the early development of L.perenne. The same sediments, leached at a ratio of 1/25, presented a reduction of acute (germination) and chronic (growth) phytotoxicity. The bioconcentration factors of the metals studied decreased with the leached sediment, except for Cu which was still clearly identified in root parts. Thus rotary leaching tests and phytotoxicity bioassays can be used to provide an initial assessment of the ability of plants, particularly halophytes, to colonize deposits of dredged seaport sediments.

Bonaire is considered to harbor some of the best remaining coral reefs of the Caribbean, but faces multiple pressures including eutrophication. We measured multiple water quality indicators twice annually, from November 2011 to May 2013, at 11 locations at the west coast of Bonaire. This study resulted in 834 data points. DIN concentrations ranged from below quantification to 2.69μmol/l, phosphate from below quantification to 0.16μmol/l, and chlorophyll-a from 0.02 to 0.42μg/l. Several indicators showed signs of eutrophication, with spatial and temporal effects. At southern and urban locations threshold levels of nitrogen were exceeded. This can be a result of brine leaching into sea from salt works and outflow of sewage water. Chlorophyll-a showed an increase in time, and phosphorus seemed to show a similar trend. These eutrophication indicators are likely to exceed threshold levels in near future if the observed trend continues. This is a cause for concern and action.

This work presents an evaluation of the remediation efficiency and of the environmental impact of a zero-valent iron commercial substrate used for the removal of heavy metals from groundwater in different conditions. A specific feature of the substrate is the presence of zero-valent iron (ZVI), organic carbon, and sulfate. The authors analyzed its composition and performances by means of batch tests in different boundary conditions. In detail, the efficacy was evaluated for metals (Cu, Cr, Pb, and Zn) and for nitrates and sulfates. Neutral and acidic pH values, imputable to dangerous waste landfill leachate or to acid mine drainage, were considered. The environmental impact of the substrate was also assessed for the investigated pHs. The product showed a high efficiency in the removal of metals (mainly described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model), with a noticeable variability according to the pH of the polluted phase. Nitrate ion removal was inhibited by sulfates at all the considered pH values. Characterization and batch studies revealed that the substrate was a source of Mn, Cr, Pb, Cu, and sulfate ions, besides Fe. This study shows that the employment of an optimized amount of reagent, while achieving good performances, is essential to contain the leaching of undesirable substances into aqueous environment.

Biochar produced from malt spent rootlets was employed for the removal of Hg(II) from pure aqueous solutions. Batch experiments were conducted at 25 °C. The optimum pH value for Hg(II) sorption onto biochar was 5. Biomass dose and contact time were examined to determine sorption kinetics and equilibrium capacity constants. The increase of biochar dose resulted in higher sorption efficiency. After a 24-h contact time at biochar concentrations of 0.3 and 1 g/L, the Hg(II) removal was 71 and 100 %, respectively. Based on the sorption kinetic data, the biochar sorption capacity for mercury reached its maximum after 2 h; 33 % of Hg(II) was removed within the first 5 min. Based on the isotherm data, the maximum biochar sorption capacity for Hg(II) was 103 mg/g. Finally, HCl, EDTA, NaCl, HNO₃, H₂SO₄, and distilled water leaching solutions were tested for Hg(II) desorption with HCl being the most effective.

Endocrine disruptor compounds (EDCs) are dangerous pollutants largely present in urban, industrial, and agricultural wastes, and through leaching and degradation from/of these matrices, they can reach and contaminate the environment. Bioremediation of polluted systems from EDCs using white rot fungi can be a valuable alternative approach with respect to conventional physical and chemical methods. These fungi have the capacity to biodegrade numerous phenolic contaminants with their unspecific extracellular ligninolytic enzymes. This study investigated the simultaneous removal of the xenoestrogens bisphenol A (BPA), ethynilestadiol (EE2), and 4-n-nonylphenol (NP), the herbicide linuron, and the insecticide dimethoate from a waste landfill leachate (LEACH) adopting a combination of adsorption and biodegradation. Trametes versicolor and Stereum hirsutum were inoculated, separately, on potato dextrose agar alone or added with different adsorbent materials of low cost and wide availability. The substrates with the fungus were superimposed on the contaminated LEACH. The control used was the LEACH overlaid by not inoculated potato dextrose agar. Both fungi showed an adequate tolerance to LEACH. In a period of 20 days, T. versicolor growing on the various substrates removed almost 100 % of BPA, EE2, NP, and linuron, and from 59 to 97 % of dimethoate. S. hirsutum showed a marked degrading activity only towards NP, which was totally removed after 20 days or less with any substrate and, to a lesser extent, linuron. Even in the absence of fungus, the methodology adopted achieved a relevant contaminant removal, with the only exception of the very hydrophilic dimethoate.

Mineral dissolution plays an essential role in controlling geogenic arsenic (As) contamination in groundwater. Although reductive dissolution of Fe oxyhydroxides is generally considered a key As release mechanism in many aquifers, some recent studies argue that silicate minerals, normally considered “inert” in As release, are the primary source of As contamination under certain conditions. The objective of this study is to determine As distribution in different minerals in a natural sediment and identify As release mechanisms and the role of silicate minerals in As release. A sediment sample was collected, characterized, and tested using leaching experiments at a range of pH and redox potentials. Our results showed that silicate minerals, which make up the bulk of the sediment, are the main As reservoir, containing 75 % of As. Fe–Mn oxyhydroxides, which are minor components in the sediment, are the second largest As reservoir and hold 16 % of As. Leaching experiments showed that silicate mineral dissolution is an important As-releasing mechanism and that high pH and low redox potential promoted silicate mineral dissolution and As release.

A column experiment was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) for the in situ immobilization of Pb and Zn in an acidic soil. The impact of nZVI on soil was evaluated by monitoring the physicochemical characteristics of the leachates and their ecotoxicological effects on three species, Vibrio fischeri, Artemia franciscana, and Caenorhabditis elegans. Treatment with nZVI resulted in more effective Pb immobilization in comparison to Zn and reduced the leachability by 98 and 72 %, respectively; the immobilization was stable throughout the experiment. Leachates from nZVI-treated soils showed lower toxicity than leachates from untreated ones. The highest toxicity in treated soils was observed in the first leachate, which presented high values of electrical conductivity due to the leachability of soil ions and those provided by the commercial nanoparticle suspension (Na and Fe). V. fischeri and C. elegans were more sensitive to leachates from nZVI-treated soils polluted with Zn than those from soils polluted with Pb; A. franciscana showed the opposite trend.

Corn cob silica (CCS), produced via a modification of the sol-gel method, can reduce heavy metal availability and stabilize contaminated soil on abandoned mining sites. Adding 5 % (w/w) CCS to mining site soil increased pH from 4.0 to 7.7, and cation exchange capacity increased from 94.5 to 100.3 cmol+/kg. Sequential extraction showed that adding CCS decreased heavy metal availability in the soil. Mobility factor (MF) values indicated that CCS reduced Pb mobility more than that of Zn or Cu in all fractions. Pb concentrations in leachate from all fractions using the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) were greatly decreased by adding 3 % (w/w) CCS. CCS similarly reduced Zn concentrations in TCLP leachate. CCS addition did not impact Cu concentrations in leachate, likely because concentrations were much lower than those of the other metals. As was generally less mobile than the heavy metals; however, As mobility and leachability tended to increase with CCS addition because its oxyanions arsenite and arsenate have low affinity for negatively charged surfaces on the CCS. Shoot and root growth of Spinacia oleracea L. (spinach) was much greater in CCS-treated soil than in unamended soil. Results demonstrate the utility of CCS to stabilize heavy metals in contaminated mining site soil, but this treatment may not be ideal for As-contaminated soils.
